Hey!! would you recommend Kenka bancho to be translated do you think the western Otome games fanbase would enjoy it?

Well , I can’t speak for the entire western fanbase but I just finished the game myself yesterday and really liked it, it has a great concept, heroine(hinako please punch me in the face) and characters (especially the yankees actually the yankees are the best)! (spoiler : though if we’re talking about the guys rintarou is the best)

the game also doesn’t take itself too seriously

(well until you have to go kick yakuza‘s asses anyway) and have a good mix of friendship and romance and heck even family so I think most people will like it. I have seen loads of people tweeting at spikechunsoft_e showing their interests and my blog exists so I’m sure there’s loads of people who are interested out there should the game get a localisation , I myself got 2 copies of the game and would get two more should an english version ever happen to get my friends into it lol.

Kenka Bancho Otome first impressions ?

Took me 2 days but I just finished a route in Kenka Bancho Otome and thought I would just write down some thoughts(warning my rambling tendency strikes again and it’s a minor wall-of-text! but with screenshot in between) about it to give a general idea of the game and maybe help if some people are on the fence about it ? , very minor(?) spoilers and some screenshot under the cut !

(Though tbh I’m a huge KBO trash why would you believe anything I say about this series lmao) 

System/Gameplay

One of the reason behind the hype for Kenka Bancho Otome was the fact that you could fight your boys and while the option was refreshing and nearly every single time I’m pissed at a yankee , seconds later I’m given the chance to kick his ass \o/ so I’m fairly pleased but the rhythm game-esque fight sequence left a lot to be desired haha , though I guess I could overlook it because they’re still experimenting with the concept and if it’s too difficult or too easy you will get complaints either way so /shrugs/. The fight do get more difficult for the characters that are stronger in canon though so that is neat! and if you sucks at this you can just choose to win anyway even if you lose , something the developers said they added so that people won’t be frustrated and enjoy the game and on your second play-through you can skip fights that you pick yourself(not the story ones though) so there’s that

The trash-talk portion was unexpectedly fun because of gems like this

Depending on the expression you choose, you too could end up with my favourite thing in the world blushy!totomaru (whom I have decided to just probably call tomato!maru at this point because this dang boy blushes so much lol) But this is some brutal speed-reading japansese in disguise lmao , you given like 1 second (maybe even less) as the phrase flash through your screen and then 5 seconds to recreate it correctly!

In the Common Route , there’s also missions (which are usually beat up x no of yankees before this date) you have to complete or you will trigger a BADEND lol (it’s really just a few slightly different variations of “I failed to do this and Hikaru kicked me out what now welp” lol but there’s no /bad/ bad end in this game if you’re worried about that \o/ (ok Hinako probably being homeless is bad but you get the idea lol) Red exclamations are missions related events/important events and yellow are usually special character related scenes for you to unlock.

You can change your menu voices (and as you can see I’m trash with no shame and changed it to Rintarou before I even started my game lol sorry totomaru you’re in my heart) and they say different things in different menus. For example if you open the CG gallery with Ritarou’s voice he say “The memories I shared with you is very precious to me" /insert whale noises as i throw my vita out of the window and die

Story (minor details spoilers from this point?)

At this point , aside from the common route which was gr8 and hilarious. I have only finished Totomaru’s route(i was really gonna kick Konparu’s ass but Totomaru moe-ed me into his route welp) so I can’t really speak for the entire game but it’s super cute and as expected Totomaru is bro af and treats Hinako /super/ well. The fact that the headband he wears says “fervent” is super fitting because fervent is having or displaying a passionate intensity and that’s totomaru to a T.

At one point these two kids even got the same souvenirs for each other my telepathic children. The general consensus with reviews so far is that friendship route > romance route and I got to agree lol even though the romance route was cute in its own right and i would have liked it better if not for the final resolution . The friendship route was better in that sense and also super hilarious to boot.

The writing was fine in the romance route up till mid-February but the twist they decided to put in was a slightly weak and cheap attempt lol and how Hinako identity was revealed to Totomaru was kinda cheap as well but regardless it was still cute and munekyun stuff , also if you leave Hinako as the default name (as you should she’s my lovely child) characters will call out her name and I swear every time it happens I’m so ready to throw my Vita out of the window  (⁄ ⁄>⁄ ▽ ⁄<⁄ ⁄) . Also props to KENN for being great as per usual lol , you can really hear and feel totomaru’s embarrassment , spunk and hesitations through his voice. 

Totomaru asides , I also really love Hinako!!! Her being a literally strong person is one and while she doesn’t oppose every bad things that happens to her , she’s stubborn where it counts.

In Totomaru’s love route, he was practically like “you shouldn’t fight anymore cause you’re a girl after all” after finding out her identity and when convincing him otherwise with words didn’t work , my child straight up “talk” with her fist! 

If you’re expecting female superhero level of badass she might disappoint you but for what she’s supposed to be , a 15 years old girl who’s a little confused and having many of her first experiences and learning along the way , I think she’s great and still pretty badass ( she does have a legion of yankees followers after proving her worth after all) 

She says bunch of hilarious stuff too but the most memorable ones for me was her asking Konparu if he’s into dude since he doesn’t have interest in woman and also when she’s arguing with Hikaru and he bring his authority as onii-san in , she rebutted and said they were twins so she could be his nee-san for all he knows!

Also before we get Mirako’s name in the game , she also straight-up called him a pick-up artist so lmao

Music

Perhaps the most “not your typical otome game” about this game is the sound track and bgms lol , half the time I feel like I’m listening to that radio thing on GTA rather than playing an otome game and it gets you pumped up  , the softer/gentler bgms are cute as well ヽ(・∀・)ﾉ . ALSO THE ED track “GO YOUR OWN WAY” IS TOTALLY UP MY ALLEY ? It’s really not the kind of track you expect as an otome ED(but then neither was the OP) but it’s really fitting end for how this is supposed to be a journey of friendship and growth and just makes you feel warm on the inside ^___^ (buy the ost yo!)

Conclusion

As I have stated at the start , I’m only one route in and I’m biased as hell towards this series but I really do think it’s good so far and if you’re on the fence you should check it out , I’m 10000% glad I got the Stellaworth set lol , you should go buy it too and scream with me yo! 

(I low-key feels like a Spike chunsoft’s PR machine with all the merch info I post and encouragement to buy stuffs but I really like the game?! :D , have fun if you’re playing or have decided to buy it)

So my copy of kenka bancho otome finally arrived today and I thought i should do an unboxing post or really me losing my shit thinly veiled as an unboxing post , pictures under the cut :D

I let my guard down for one hot second and bam! more new stuff lmao , I swear this franchise won’t give me a break.

We have the release date and potato quality jacket cover done by Kuromitsu Kinako(the same person who did the game art) for the Kenka Bancho Otome Drama CD : Alice in Shishiku and the Theme Song and Soundtrack featuring the opening 愛する者へ捧ぐように(Aisuru Mono e Sasagu Youni or In order to devote to my beloved(?)) by KENN and Aoi Shouta and the Ending theme “Go Your Own Way” by Yocke along with 19 BGM tracks from the game.

Both CDs are to be released on the 29th June 2016 at 2,700yen for the OST and 3240yen for the Drama CD.
