Could this man have survived without the fourth wall?

Yes and no.

Some spoilers below.

At some point down the line, Kim Dokja becomes hyperdependent of the fourth wall. It's similar to dissociation, he does it so much that at some point - it's the only way of coping he has.

We know why. His story explained it. But he got so used to seeing everything from behind that wall that he became incapable of stepping beyond it.

You can relate to a character but you don't expect a character to relate to you.

The fourth wall diluted Kim Dokja’s feelings. But that included the positive ones as well. He still felt them but not properly.

Without the skill shielding him, he could have died several times. But with the skill always shielding him, he never learned to properly process his emotions.

He never learned to heal and depend on others.

Ignoring the part of the final wall, and protection against mental attacks, what do you think?

Could Kim Dokja have been happier, even just a little bit, if he hadn't been constantly shielded by the Fourth Wall?

Look at her face when Kim Dokja tells her she can stay and when she realizes that he won’t. She doesn’t care about her safety at that point. She just wants him to be okay. Losing him - even when only temporary - already hurt deeply, what if the next time it’s for good? She won’t be able to handle that. She doesn’t want to have to handle that.

Kim Dokja you sick bastard, you hurt others by hurting yourself only because you don’t understand that you are loved.
