My steps to writing fanfiction:
Think about writing fanfiction
Think about it some more
Continue thinking about writing fanfiction
Go on tiktok for a few hours
Remember I'm supposed to be thinking about fanfiction
Think about writing fanfiction
Go on Ao3, read some fanfiction
Remember I'm supposed to be thinking about fanfiction
Go to spotify to get my head in the game
End up making playlists
Find a perfect song to write too
Open up google docs
Begin writing
Write a sentance, decide thats good for the day
Give up, go to Tumblr.
Suddenly get the unstoppable urge to write at about 3AM and end up writing a chapters worth of it in the middle of the night.

hey fic writers,
fun question:
do your fics pass the bechdel test?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying every fic has to. NO ONE would expect that of a pwp and if your characters are snowed in or lost in the woods it absolutely makes sense your fic won’t pass the bechdel test. But I noticed a lot of longer fics that reasonably could don’t pass, even those with a female main character. I found that a bit sad, especially considering the majority of fic writers and readers are women or were socialized as such. I know a lot of canon sources don’t give a lot of female characters to play with and that makes it certainly harder. But not impossible.
Idk, I just wanted to put that out there. food for thought or something.

I get wanting to celebrate when your fic hits a milestone like woohoo, 1000 hits, woohoo, 1000 kudos. I get it. And you should! Yes! Celebrate! Your story resonated with a lot of people! You did a thing!
But please, please, please don't let the numbers become what matters to you over the story and the characters that you love. I've watched too many people over the years get their feelings all tied up in the hits they are or are not getting, the stats other authors are getting, the "why am I not getting the same attention as [viral sensation here]" blues. And they forget! They forget why they wanted to write those things in the first place!
Only the most craven, attention-hoggy people START for the numbers. Only the most cynical, exploitative people hop from popular pairing to popular pairing hoping to hit the jackpot. And those people stand out to others, they never GET that thing they're hoping for, not for long. Because the love isn't there in their text. The joy isn't there in their actual creation. It shows.
Didn't you love something enough to write for it? Didn't you want to see a character do something different? Didn't you want to push those two dolls together and make them kiss? Weren't you getting joy from inventing your own new fun scenarios in which to put those people? Did it not bring you a sense of pride and happiness to finish that story you wanted to write for yourself and share it with others?
It doesn't matter how many kudos it has. It doesn't matter how many hits or comments. Those things are nice, but what should matter is your fandom. Your joy. One comment on a fic you're hella proud of is worth more than 10 comments on a fic you spat out just because you thought it'd have a shot at some attention.

Getting an idea for writing in the middle of doing something is the worst thing ever. I just have to get the thing done as quickly as possible and pray that I don’t forget. (I will in fact, forget)

The Black Brothers (TTPD version)
Tumblr media
Regulus to Sirius:
I thought it was just goodbye for now
You said you were gonna grow up Then you were gonna come find me
Promises, oceans deep
Sirius to Regulus:
But life was always easier on you Than it was on me
We both did the best we could do underneath the same moon In different galaxies
And I didn't want to hang around We said it was just goodbye for now

Every writer has two sides:
"I love my characters, they are my children and will protect them with my life"
"I wanna make them suffer so fucking much"
