Too Sweet - Hozier

You know, a lot of people think that the lyrics to Too Sweet just entail her being too good for him. But for me there are certain lyrics that make me think of like an age gap.

"You know you're bright as the morning / As soft as the rain / Pretty as a vine / As sweet as a grape / If you can sit in a barrel / Maybe I'll wait / Until that day"

That feels like he's waiting until she's gotten older and colder, specifically the barrel part, like perhaps he wants to wait until she's aged (like wine does, in case you didn't already know.)

Plus the very first lyric, the "bright as the morning" maybe could be like, the brightness of youth, or maybe she's just a sunshine.

THEN there's the other part.

"I'd rather take my whiskey neat / My coffee black and my bed at three / You're too sweet for me"

I'm getting like a bitter, cynical-ish older man vibe from that, anyone else?

Coffee is bitter.

And the whiskey in his bed at three? Maybe he's seen too much and needs to drink to fall asleep. (Possible military or police background?)

And don't even get me STARTED on the wedding bells. The fact that he hears wedding bells when he looks at her makes me feel like he wants to try for her. To make her happy, you know?

And if it is a death knell, like I've been seeing some people say it is, then maybe it's the classic, "oh, God, this girl is going to be the death of me."

There is also this part at the beginning that really gets me in my feels.

"It can't be said I'm an early bird / It's ten o'clock before I say a word / Baby, I can never tell / How do you sleep so well? / You keep telling me to live right / To go to bed before the daylight / But then you wake up for the sunrise"

She's his opposite. She's an early bird, probably the first one asleep and he gets into bed with her HOURS later. Naturally, she worries about him, but he doesn't think she needs to.

I don't know, hearing that song for the first time awakened an urge to analyze it and maybe write something based on it. What do you think of Too Sweet? Let me know!

“todo es para ti” (means “everything (i) do is for you” makes me giggle 2)

“me vuelves loco mi amor” (so silly “you drive me crazy” like awe shucks.)

“cuanto te quiero”/“te amo con todo mi corazón” (1. “how much i love you” 2. “i love you with all my heart”. there’s a diff between “quiero” and “amo” btw. generally depends on the context and WHO the person is speaking to.)

“eres mi sol, mi luna y las estrellas. eres mi cielo” (so cute. means “you’re my sun, my moon and all the stars. you’re the entire sky to me.” ok but fr? “mi cielo” is hard to translate.)

“deme que eres mía/mío” (cheesy and possessive !! “tell me you’re mine.”)

Phillip Graves Headcanons Rapid-fire Edition (because I can)

-biggest brat this side of the Mississippi. Can't get him to listen unless he's got to for a mission and even then it's dicey.

-loves his boys. Probably would enjoy getting a Father's Day card. Cries if he gets one.

-has gotten drunk, stripped off his shirt and started swinging it over his head with his tie around his head like a pirate.

-has gotten barked at by a younger shadow. Was very confused. Did not know what to say and thus walked away.

-has jeans in his closet that make his Shadows feel.. conflicted.

-will parade around base when he feels like it, wearing what he wants, saying what he wants.

-probably drives a Ford F150 (in red) with expensive leather seats.

-astonomical daddy issues. Mama's boy. Also has mommy issues.

-you can't tell me he doesn't like hot chocolate.

-probably wants a dog but doesn't have the time for one

-weirdly good with small children.

"Come on, now, sugar.. don't cry. There you go."

-in the same breath will laugh at children falling in videos.

-has small stashes of receipts from starbucks. He says they're not his. He's lying. He likes the pink drink.

-gets butterflies if a hand lands anywhere near the vicinity of his itty bitty little waist. His Shadows, a passersby, whoever.

Graves Headcanons from Shadows’ POV (Part 1):

((Or, i wanna share some silly hc in this format in between all the art stuff • 3•))

Every Shadow, from the grizzled Spec Ops operator to the fresh faced civilian, no matter what background or experience, always had Graves as that one topic of gossip they turned to when things got too slow.

It’s become both habit and sport to catalog every detail of their Commander and then discuss their findings in a twisted peer review, preferably with alcohol involved, as if gathering intel on a high value target before the op.

Through the years it had been tradition for Elder Shadows to pass on Graves ‘lore’ to the newest Shadows and encourage them to take up the hobby of Graves Watching (it’s effective observation training, you see…if you happen to catch feelings for the boss, well, it’s par for the course)

There’s a ‘published’ (a fat binder of loose leaf) Graves Manual floating around,(bland cover and backing and with dick doodles all over for extra camouflage, pockets full of photos of the Commander from various angles) on base with multiple entries:

- first notable observation: Graves is fucking pretty. Too pretty (and relatively young) to be head of a band of mercenaries. And he knows he’s pretty (been seen smirking at tongue tied, blushing baby Shadows and civilians alike). Rival PMCs and militaries, on the rare chance SC has to cooperate with them, would ogle in envy as the Commander strutted around and barked orders in his tight preferred BDUs (the Shadows preen with pride at this. Every. Damn. Time)

- Graves is every bit the outspoken Texas stereotype. He’s loud, worships at the alter of Texas Barbecue, an avid Dallas Cowboys fan (staff found a jersey in his closet), had been winning gun competitions since he was old enough to compete (off-hand boast from the man himself) and blasts country music both out of love for the genre and out of sadistic spite (Every cookout. The trick is to get a stealthy Shadow to switch playlists while Graves is busy grilling)

- but he’s also been observed waiting for his Shadows to finish speaking, listening intently with full on eye contact (a bit overwhelming for the newbies). He prefers to workout in the evenings, alone, when everyone else would be in the rec rooms or asleep. He’ll take his tablet up to the roof and work in solitude drafting tedious emails or planning a difficult op. There are days, when nothing of note is scheduled, when he’ll almost retreat into himself and bask in the Company’s presence instead of engage.

- it’s this duality that started the Shadows’ fixation on Graves: a pretty loudmouth with Depth (the Shadows chuckled over this description but it was true dammit)

-the man is tight lipped about his childhood and family; braver Shadows have asked but were diverted to other topics or out right shut down (Note: more data needed on this!)

-his personal quarters are spotless and put together (bed made with sheets tightly tucked in, boots shined and neatly placed, everything in its place), his meeting room where he entertains clients is pristine and posh in furnishings, and yet his work office is an utter disaster, organized chaos is a charitable descriptor.

-the Shadows conclude each room represents a facet of the man; the orderly quarters is habit driven from years as a Marine, the opulent meeting room is the face of a successful CEO he wants to present to the world, and his work room, the one filled with binders, reports, coffee stains, knick knacks from his Shadows, is the realest representation of Graves out of the three, the Graves only they were privy to (high fives were exchanged over this big brain discovery, the Shadow who posited this theory was promptly dog piled)

Gaz makes me think things, like:

Gaz dragging you out into the rain (there's no lightning, just rain and thunder) and making you dance with him, twirling you around.

Kissing you hard, just because he can, just because you're right there and he loves you.

Showering with him to warm back up and keep from catching cold, and his hands are all over you. Not because he's trying to be pervy. Just because he loves your skin.

Drinking hot cocoa, wrapped up in blankets after you get done, snuggled up against his side.

Falling asleep to the sound of his humming, old the 90s RNB that he listens to all the time.

Shadow Company Headcanons 4

-Phillip Graves does not tolerate bullies. Found out one of the Shadows was being bullied by a colleague and that colleague mysteriously resigned from Shadow Company.

-Graves is an avid Luke Brian fan. Gets drunk and starts dancing and singing along. Mostly to Country Girl (Shake It For Me.)

-Oddly good at mechanical bull riding. His hips barely budge. His record is a minute before he got bored and hopped off himself.

-Only drinks sparkling water and coffee. His Shadows don't know how he's alive and in such good shape.

-Takes good care of his skin, and encourages his Shadows to do the same. They need lotion? He has fourteen bottles for a reason. They need to relax and moisturize? He has a mask for that. Soft hands. No I will not explain.

-Wears a really woodsy, cowboy-esque cologne. I'm thinking pine or cedar mixed with a minty scent.

-Has the most rocking shower routine ever.

-Would probably enjoy forehead kisses. Will never admit it.

-Some of his Shadows hate it, but he blares country music whenever any foreign team comes to visit and feeds them burgers. Thinks it's hilarious to be aggressively American.

-Southern gentleman. Always holding doors, being polite (despite being the conniving little bastard he really is.)

-Makes fun of British people on TV. Tries to imitate them but ends up creating something that doesn't even sound like English.

-Favorite thing to do is to pretend like he straight-up is the Shadows father. Dropped one of his Shadows off at a volleyball game (it was for fun and old time's sake)

-Hates popcorn. No one knows why.

-Really likes expensive wines. Makes him feel fancy. And he thinks the bottles are pretty.

-Walks around in a shirt that's buttoned just a little too low on off days. Gets stares. Is very satisfied knowing he's still got it.

-Absolutely adores babies. You can't tell me he doesn't. He'll hold one of his Shadow's babies and be cooing at it all sweet.

"Hi there, darlin'... ain't you just the sweetest little thing?"

And his voice will get all soft if the baby falls asleep in his arms. Has babysat for his Shadows. Will do it again.

-One of the Shadows made Graves a godfather for their daughter and Graves went back to his room and cried.

-Sometimes, if it's a visit day, Graves will be swarmed with kids, ranging from just barely walking to college aged, greeting him with bright smiles and excited voices. They all grew up knowing who he was.

-Got extra cocky the day he spotted his first grey hair. "Damn, I look good even if I'm going silver." (He won't call them greys, uses silvers because he likes it better.)
