So...what's this really about for you? You have permission to be blunt.

Hot thoughts: I apologize to everyone, but I have the strong impression that Rayner simply fell in love with all his Kellerun ears. His scene with Burnham at the beginning and how he talked about protecting her is so saturated with warmth on his part that my brain has reason to think so.

I'm wondering, do the Kelleruns have any trick related to love? For example, do they fall in love only once and for the rest of their lives? We know so little about the Kelleruns, please provide some clarification.
Rayner is an amazing character. And sorry guys, but I'm not one to compare him to Shaw.
Shaw was an initial "pain in the @ss" and I don’t remember him going to help anyone from the team in the first episodes (please correct me if this happened, I didn’t rewatch Picard), but Rayner went to help Tilly and Adira. There is a huge difference between them.
Rayner, with this one act alone, shows that there is experience within his armor, even if it is not (yet) his command. He is simply closed from others, according to his beliefs and principles. He is an old warrior who has seen everything along the way.
His path is completely different.
P. S. And I'm not saying that Captain Shaw's character is bad. He's different. They are both different.
P. P. S. I may be a glitch, but I get the feeling that Rayner looks at some of the guys on the team in a very fatherly way? On Rhys, on Tilly...
With Paul they can become friends. And in general, Rayner has every chance of getting the title “space uncle”, instead of “space stepfather”. (Space Dad - Paul, Space Aunt - Jett Reno)
