The doorway turning black gave Paris just enough warning to sign off before Kren walked into his room, statuesque as ever. His face wasn’t even particularly blank today, not the way Paris had seen him go blank when he was actually uncomfortable (at least, Paris thought he’d learned to read Kren well enough to identify that expression).

“That’s how you feel?” Kren said, without preamble. He didn’t even sit down.

“‘Hi, how are you, it’s nice to see you, been a while,’” Paris said, bratty. He regretted the words as soon as they were out of his mouth. However he felt about Kren – and he honestly didn’t know, but the dial was definitely leaning negative – he didn’t have to be a jerk; he didn’t have to make this worse. Fortunately, Kren didn’t respond to his sarcasm, just waited. Turning his tone honest, Paris said, “Yeah.”
