Tav let out a soft chuckle. "He'll be back... he likes you." True, he wasn't a ranger or a druid, but he liked to imagine he could at least tell when a dog liked a person. His ears turned a bit, his smile remaining, even if the subject wasn't the happiest.
"He was. Lived a good life. I've never stopped missing 'im, though." He glanced up in time to catch Karlach's expression, and tried to read it. Empathy? Reminiscing? It looked something like that. He shook his head suddenly, clearing his throat.
"Thanks... I-- I think your father'd be proud 'f you, too." He tilted his head, looking up to her. "You've gone into Avernus, made it out th' other side. That's something t' be proud of, in my book." There was a slight pause as he tapped his finger, a relieved sigh escaping him. Back to the 'interview.' "Well... 's long as you're offering... got any juicy gossip?"
Karlach watched Scratch strut away with an air of sadness about her. She would have the pup on her lap all night if she could, scratching and petting until they both ended up falling asleep. To feel fur again after so long among skin, rock and scales...
The Tiefling returned her gaze to Tavrayn and softened her expression. "He sounds like a good man." It made her think of her own father. Strong willed, stubborn and incredibly hard working. Trying to recall his face for a moment, she felt a shudder run through her chest as she struggled-
Tumblr media
"Uh," She tried to shake it off, distract herself and re-focus. "That makes sense. I'm sure he'd be proud of what you're doing." She readjusted herself, wanting to steer away from the topic of parents for now before she hurt herself more. "So, since this is an interview. Any other questions for me?" She smiled once more, as mask to hide the ache.

The healer happily joined him, a long, soft sigh escaping them as they felt the day's tension melt away. (As much as Vin had encouraged Astarion not to take the pillows... they couldn't deny how much they enjoyed the comfort.) A soft chuckle escaped them, head tipping back against the taller elf's chest. Dark brown eyes met red, a teasing grin crinkling the corners of their eyes.
"If you do that, who's going to tell you you can't fit another gold-plated goblet in your pack?" And speaking of... they took the goblet of wine (both recent acquisitions, to the best of their knowledge) and drank slowly, savoring the taste of it. "Whatever it is, it's better than my usual fare," they murmured between sips. "And I fainted once. It's hardly a habit." (Not that they minded the extra care taken.)
"I would very much like to be in this thing for the long run," they said quietly. The conversation they'd come to the tent for... the conversation they needed to have, returned to the front of their mind as Astarion spoke again. At first, they simply listened, chin tilted up to look at him. But when they spoke, they sat up, set down their wine, and turned to face him. They idly reached for his hand, brushing a thumb over the back of his pale skin.
"I—" Vin paused. What did they expect? "I don't expect you to play a role," they started, speaking slowly, thoughtfully. "I don't expect you to try and be anything you're not. You've never asked it of me... it would be unfair to ask it of you. Treat her with kindness. That is all I'll ever expect."
THE vampire allows Vin to lead him to his tent, sprawling out on his collection of stolen pillows. He pats the space between his legs with a coy grin, allowing Vin to settle with their back against his chest.
Tumblr media
" I really do need to teach you the art of hedonism, don't I? " he purrs, rooting around his horde of treasure before pulling out a chalice and a bottle of wine. He pours a glass for the other elf, passing it into their hands. " Drink up! It's no Arabellan Dry, but it'll do; I don't need you fainting on me again. " Once they had settled into a feeding routine, Astarion quickly learned that it was a good idea to keep Vin hydrated before his ' meals. '
AS they drink, Astarion reaches up a hand to push Vin's long hair to the side, giving him access to their neck. He idly traces a finger against a prominent vein, running over bruised puncture marks that had yet to heal. " So, about your daughter... ". His voice has its playful performative tone; a sign that this was a serious topic. " ...I assume her father isn't in the picture, so...what are your expectations for me? I mean, I assume we're in this...thing for the long run, but...I don't really see myself as the fatherly type; I'm only just starting to figure out this ' relationship ' stuff... ".

Salasen's smile was warm, much the same as when she looked at her own child. (Though he was no longer a child, but a young man, like Sorros.) "I'm honored you feel that way," she said with a soft chuckle, "Even if we do not know each other well, yet."
Violet eyes remained on the younger elf as Sal listened, her ears turning slightly as she listened to his story. Her smile fell as he recounted the troubles he encountered, the apathy the druids of his home felt toward the outside world. So many druid elders misconstrued the teachings of Silvanus to fit their own isolationism, their own learned cruelty.
"I am sorry you had to face such moral quandary so young," she murmured. "I know this will not change the past, but... you're right to feel the way you do. At least, that's what I believe, and what I taught my family. Are we not part of nature? Are we not the Oak Father's instruments, as much as the river or the animals or trees?" She wasn't sure he wanted to discuss those questions, but it helped her explain her thinking.
A sigh escaped her, and the Drow looked back to the fire. "My Circle felt similarly. Though we would tend to the odd outsider, they were not to stay. I was my First Druid's apprentice..." she swallowed, eyes closing as she recalled her own departure from her home. "I fell in love with one of those 'odd outsiders,' and left with him. I have not been home since."
Tumblr media
"I have a feeling - we're I your son - that I wouldn't have wanted to leave." Sorros had noted, during his travels, that he generally had a rather decent ability to judge a person's character upon only brief conversations and interactions - and already, his company now spoke volumes different than what conversations with his mother would have once held.
"Myself and two of my brothers were in the forest - - hunting for wild garlic for our father. He was an alchemist, you see, and one of our own had come down with an awful fever---" Frankly, the very last thing Sorros wanted to do was recount the tale, but it had been so long since he had that perhaps it would do him some good to release pressure from those wounds. "During our hunt, we espied a small gathering of folk - lost refugees we presumed - and many of them were sick and injured. As per our circle's laws, however, we were to report it to them without first interacting with the refugees - - and so we did. Once we'd gotten the garlic, of course."
He shifts how he's sat, arms loosely slung around drawn up knees, the line of his gaze fixated upon the warmth of the fire before him - - - soothed by its embrace.
Tumblr media
"My father, having treated our sister, readied himself with remedies to approach the refugees - - but our circle prevented him from doing so. There had been unrest for some time, disagreements and such, and it arose once more with talk of the refugees circulating. It was ultimately decided that they were to let nature take its course; and leave them to suffer whatever fate they were forced to meet." Even now he felt anger within his breast;
"That they would so readily go against such a thing to treat their own but not another was atrocious and quite a few within our grove began to retaliate - - they, like myself, believed that if nature gave us the ability to help and to heal then we ought use it to do so - - - but just as many, if not more sided with letting nature take its course."
"Eventually, the unrest grew and the circle started to tear itself apart with their differing beliefs; my own family had settled with accepting what had been told and refused to fight against it - - whereas I simply couldn't live with that as a teaching. Eventually, I left; preferring a life on the road where I may find natures own calling instead of festering there. I don't even know what came of it all - it was some three decades ago that Ieft... and I do oft think of my family; but they made their choice to stay, as I made mine to leave."

Tav chuckled, shaking his head. "Alright, alright, I promise," he said, turning his grin back up to Karlach. "Next time we go fight some tree beasts, you're going too." (Even if they had to go off on their own to find one, Tavrayn wanted to see her in action.)
He watched her touch the toy, noticed the excitement in her eyes as she finally felt fur again.
And when he handed over the toy, a tiny, tiny hint of nerves gnawed at the back of his mind. What if it wasn't exactly what she wanted? But those worries quickly faded once he caught sight of her smile. In that moment her joy was his own joy, and he couldn't help but laugh as she noticed the little details he'd added to the bear. Another soft laugh escaped him as he reached over, straightening the bow tie, then looked up.
"Well, he needed to make a good first impression, y'know. It's not every day a bear gets a new home."
His smile reached his eyes as he returned the hug, wrapping both arms as tightly as he could around her... even if it might not seem so tight to her. "I'd hoped it would make you smile," he said, still holding on to the hug.
Karlach kept her smirk intact as she listened. "My point exactly. What better weapon to use against a bunch of bark than a literal walking furnace! Be sure to bring me around next time, yeah?"
Her out-weighed head tilted slightly, feeling a brew of excitement. Like a child. Gifts weren't exactly commonplace in Avernus. In camp, people were far more generous to be sure, sharing out what could benefit another better - but this felt far more personal.
Karlach's already bright eyes seemed to shine all the more as she was presented with the stuffed animal. She realised happily she could touch such a fluffy toy now without scorching it. The only reason Clive - despite his rough appearance - was able to withstand her previously was due to all the tattered leather. But this one was an actual teddy...
Tumblr media
She took it gratefully and admired it with childish elation in her expression. "Are you serious?! Look at him, the little bow tie!" She ran her thumbs through the thick fur. For them to find something like this out here...she hoped the child that owned this before was at peace. "Thank you, Tav...this means a lot..."
Keeping the bear in one hand, she dared to wrap her arms around him in a thankful embrace. "You softie."

The dog's ears flicked and quirked– not unlike the half-drow's– as he looked between Karlach and Tavrayn... and seemingly realizing he wouldn't be getting a snack or infinite cuddles, stood to find someone who would provide. Tav, for his part, huffed and leaned forward, just barely catching a quick pat on Scratch's rear as he bounded away.
"Well, so much for my interview partner," he chuckled, leaning back before looking back to Karlach. A soft hum escaped him as he listened, nodding at her thanks. Her question earned a shrug, violet eyes turning to meet hers.
"Beyond it just being th' right thing t' do?" he asked. Tav fell silent for a moment, his ears shifting back a bit, a somber note in his voice. "My father was a Harper... helping others feels a bit like following in 'is footsteps. Helps me remember who he was."
Karlach absent-mindedly smiled at Scratch. She was able to stay calm long enough to pet him here and there, but it was short lived. She would hate to singe the poor boy's fur so she often just kept her distance, or threw the leathery ball he often dropped by her feet. At least leather didn't burst into flames at her touch instantly, if she was fast enough throwing it...
Tumblr media
The Tiefling's gaze shifted upwards, back at Tavryn. She smiled softly, full of thanks. "I'm glad. It's nice to be surrounded by people who actually want to help just for the sake of it, not because there's something in it for them for a change." Her smile expanded to flash her twin set of fangs for a moment.
"Honestly though, why are you helping us? I'm not angry about it, obviously, I'm just curious."

"Hey, it's a big forest. I'd bet you anything there're more out there." Tav grinned, rocking forward a bit on the platforms of his feet, then back to normal. "When you finally do get t' light 'em on fire, I wanna be there to watch the show. You joke, but think about it... you wouldn't even get trapped by their roots! One hot touch an' they're ash."
At the mention of dinner, he closed his eyes, inhaling deeply through his nose. It smelled... well, not as good as his parents' cooking, but remarkably good for traveling provisions. The question, though, brought him back to the present. Present time... and his gift. A slight flush colored his cheeks and the tips of his ears as he brought the pack around in front of him. A lop-sided smile tugged at a corner of his mouth and he tilted his head to the side.
"Well... I thought Clive could use a friend," he murmured, pulling a nearly-pristine stuffed bear from the pack. Somehow, he'd even managed to find a little bowtie for the toy. "I thought you might like another friend, too."
Karlach kept her grin in place, it was pleasant to be around people who took her jokes and banter well. She hated being completely serious at all times, and finally there was someone in this party that could take it on the chin.
Tumblr media
No cultists out here, it seemed. Even they weren't stupid enough to go wandering through the shadows, it seemed. Even with a lantern. "Tree beasts? Ah man!" She pretended to pout. "I literally could have lit them on fire! Now I feel like I've missed out." Karlach folded her arms, but her smile and bright eyes showed she was just horsing around and wasn't to be taken seriously. "I'm glad you made it back in one piece though. By the smell of things, Gale's almost finished with dinner too, so you're just in time-"
She stopped as he reached into his pack and spoke. "Something for me?" Karlach repeated. Perhaps they found some kind of weapon out there, though the pack did look a little small for something of her usage. Maybe some new gloves? "What is it?"

The laugh earned another kiss, this time to his lips. The closeness felt... nice. More than nice. It was what they'd ached for for so long. A soft laugh of their own slipped past their lips, and after a moment in his arms, they stepped back, tugging him gently back toward his tent. (Their tent was terribly drafty, anyway... and as bare-bones as they could manage, the space in their pack reserved for necessities rather than comforts.)
Vin studied his expression, trying to glean anything they could. Their expression faltered for a fleeting moment, doubts tried to creep in at the edge of their mind. They banished those thoughts with a bolstered smile.
"That works for me if it works for you," the smaller elf hummed. "So long as we get to the wine quickly. Scouting is thirsty work, after all." They cast a quick glance behind them, to ensure they didn't trip on any of his things. "Your tent is better than mine." They gave a playful wink. "Almost like you've got a better eye for bedding than I."
HE throws his head back in a laugh, pulling Vin just a bit closer to him.
Tumblr media
" WELL, if you're offering...how could I say no? " He simply hums in response as Vin tells him of their daughter. Things had been so different between them ever since he confessed his feelings to them that night at Moonrise Towers. They hadn't had slept together since, but somehow this...relationship felt more intimate than any of Astarion's previous encounters. He liked it -- a lot. And he wanted more with Vin...but with their daughter in the equation, part of him worried that they would expect him to take up some sort of fatherly role -- and he certainly wasn't ready for that.
" HM...perhaps you could tell me more about her after that drink tonight? My tent or yours, darling? " Conversations like this were better held in private

Tavrayn laughed. "I c'n write down your answers if you wanna make it official." Nevermind that he didn't have a quill... or ink... or paper." He felt a wet nose at his back and opened his arms, pulling Scratch into his lap while they spoke.
He watched Karlach's expression change, his ears turning a bit as he tilted his head. His own smile fell a bit. It all sounded all so... unpleasant. "I'm sorry somebody's used it against you," he said, tone softening from his earlier joking. "An' I know you're not using it by choice."
He shifted a bit, scooting in closer, nudging the camp's dog within reach. "We'll figure it out. Even if I'm on the outside of this... brain bug thing." He gave a comforting smile. "An' you're not gonna have to shovel that shit pile alone. I promise."
She sat back down opposite him, putting the axe and whetstone to the side - wanting to show Tavrayn she was showing her full attention to him. "Oooh, this really is like an interview." She chuckled, one leg bent upwards so she could rest her arm on her propped up knee.
Karlach's smile faded slightly, but not out of anger but more trying to think of how to answer. "I can feel it when it wriggles around, yeah... Normally only does that when it's being used somehow. Whether I want it to, or not." She raises her hands as if to halt any passing thoughts. "And trust me, I'm not using it if I can help it! When it's used by force, it...it can hurt. I feel like something was taken away from me, but I don't know what..."
Tumblr media
She sighs, looking away slightly. "Honestly, no-one seems to have a real answer as to why we aren't tentacled freaks yet. Just that there's something different about our particular brain-bugs. Guess that's just another thing we got to figure out on top of the shit pile we already have."

Tav beamed and gave a quick laugh. "No wonder th' camp's so clean... not a rock 'r dirt pile left!" He glanced around; it was amazing how tidy their crew managed to keep the place. He gave a soft huff at her request, shaking his head.
"Not a lot 'f gore in these woods. Dead things don't bleed a lot." He let one of his packs drop to the ground. His daggers went next, clattering on top of the pile of supplies. The last pack, he held behind his back. It had something special in it. "We fought a lot 'f tree beasts! Big, undead shadow trees!" He held his hands up like claws and grinned. "Jus' about pulled me in half! But--" He rocked back on his heels. "I managed t' slip 'em."
Carefully, he reached into his pack, but kept his gift inside. "I... I did bring you back something, if y' want it..."
The Tiefling lowered him back down onto his feet shortly after, letting him go and brushing him down. She assumed, by his happy entrance, that it all went well.
"Ugh, mostly kicking rocks and eating dirt," Karlach rolled her eyes, smirking through her sarcasm. "Nah, mostly I just tended to my weapons, made sure they were nice and sharp, prepped the firewood and exercised for a bit. The usual, y'know." She shrugged.
Tumblr media
"But what about you lot, what happened out there? Don't spare the gory details if there are any."

"That compromise assumes a drink wasn't already in the cards." A corner of their mouth quirked up in a half-grin, head tilting up to catch a better look at him. "Maybe both, depending on where the evening takes us." Things had changed between them, become less... heated; and yet, their relationship became all the more genuine, something that meant something to the both of them.
... Hopefully it meant enough to him that their answer wouldn't change his feelings.
"I do," they confirmed their words with a nod. "Galeon... nearly a year old." She'd been with a friend and patient a long time by now... but at least they knew she'd been safe in their absence.
Tumblr media
HIS expression brightens at the kiss pressed to his cheek, and he moves place his hands on the smaller elf's waist. " Apology accepted! All you owe me is a drink once we finally reach Baldur's Gate -- ". He bats his lashes, a playful smile growing on his lips. " -- wine or that delectable blood of yours are both acceptable. " At the mention of Vin's home, his head tilts curiously in an almost catlike manner. " Rivington, hm? Are you excited to return home? You have a...daughter waiting for you there, yes? "

Sal gave a soft huff of a laugh. "Were you my son," she said quietly, "I would think you too young as well. But leaving or staying... that is your own choice to make."
As he spoke, the elder druid listened, ears turned to attention. The younger's solitude suddenly made more sense. He'd been hurt by their fellow druids. And though he left for a different purpose, left a different type of druid, the pain his departure brought was familiar.
"I understand." Salasen nodded, head tilting as she noticed the injuries beneath his armor. Her brow furrowed. "Oak Father's mercy," she murmured. "What happened?"
Tumblr media
"Aye--- many of my kin called me far too young to consider leaving on my own - - but I paid them no heed." Truly, it wasn't the only reason he had left in the end; the difficulties in his home were far more overwhelming than his need for knowledge back then and though such books and discoveries filled that void left by the absence of kin, Sorros did feel the pangs of solitude all too often. In the end, he often wonders if it had all been worth it - would giving up on his own thoughts and opinions have been easier than heading out, alone, still considered a child? He would never know.
Tumblr media
"Their ways had turned self destructive cold. I couldn't remain around those that would turn from those in need when they had the ability to aid." Even now, some three decades later, Sorros feels the very same irritation and disappointment. "They twisted teachings to suit them and their selfishness...and I couldn't become a part of that poison."
It felt bizarre to talk about - - - a subject so locked away in his person that no other could understand - but it came out with ease, now. Mayhap company of a similar mind helped. Regardless; he picked off bracers to tend to bruising and wounds beneath, keeping his consciousness momentarily occupied.

The half-drow laughed, himself, giving a quick nod. "Yeah, like an interview." As Karlach stood, he held out a hand and dropped to sit cross-legged in front of her tent. "We don't 'ave t' stand... I'm alright sitting, 's much walking around as we're doing."
He looked up, way up. Tav couldn't help but marvel at, well, just about everything about Karlach. Eyes like embers... the glow of her engine... (at least by what he'd seen) a love for everything Faerun had to offer, and the caring demeanor to match. (Yes, he'd struck up a conversation with the right person.)
"I was wonderin' about your... y'know..." He shifted a bit, pulling his knees up to his chest, reaching up to tap the side of his head. "Passengers? You all haven't turned t' mindflayers yet, so... what's th' deal with 'em?" He paused a moment before trying to backtrack. "N-not that I want any of you t' turn into a mindflayer. I was just curious. What's it like? C'n you feel it? What's it do to you?"
Karlach should be far more terrified - she may have been free from Zariel's direct grip, but she had a Mindflayer tadpole wiggling around among her lobes. She should be absolutely frightened, scrambling for any kind of aid. Yet... She was happier than she had been in years.
Despite feeling forced together, she was surrounded by people who were far more enjoyable company than what she was used to in the Hells military. A unique bunch, to be sure. But it was just so GOOD to be among people again, up on the surface - among stars and nature.
She was day dreaming about her pure luck whilst using a whetstone against her axe when her thoughts were cut short. Karlach glanced up, a genuine smile soon forming on her face.
Tumblr media
"Hey Tavrayn!" She tilted her head but her smile remained. "What, like an interview?" Karlach chuckled but stood up, brushing herself down. "I'm kidding. Sure thing! What do you want to ask?"

Somehow, Vin had managed to sneak up on him. As quiet as they were, vampiric hearing was even stronger than their own elven senses. (At least, that's what they assumed.) They'd just returned from some scouting around the shadow and war-torn lands they had to traverse between Moonrise and the city. Astarion's back had been turned, looking over something in his tent... the elf's lips turned up in a smile, sneaking up behind him and pulling him into a tight embrace.
... But their playful grin faded as they felt him startle, and immediately loosened their grip. As he turned, they made a note to themself: no more surprise embraces.
"I'm sorry I startled you... and I won't sneak around again, I promise." Vin leaned up to press a kiss against his cheek, hands gentle on his shoulders. "Just wanted you to know I'd returned... and it's only another couple days to Rivington from here."
Tumblr media
@fxrest-bcrn sent: [ back hug ] a hug where one person comes up to another and wraps their arms around them -- from vin on @fxrest-bcrn :3
ASTARION jumped as he felt a pair of arms wrap around him from behind. He reflexively moved to grab at them, before relaxing as he realized it was only Vin.
Tumblr media
" Ah -- you know I'm always happy to see you darling, but perhaps warn me the next time you want to sneak up behind me, hm? " He shifts in the other elf's arms until he's facing them with a warm smile. " What can I do for you, love? "

@iron-hearts-ablaze continued from here:
𝑫𝑰𝑭𝑭𝑬𝑹𝑬𝑵𝑻 𝑾𝑨𝒀𝑺 𝑻𝑶 𝑯𝑼𝑮 𝑺𝑶𝑴𝑬𝑶𝑵𝑬.
It seemed to be a new addition to the usual routine. Whenever Tavrayn returned to camp, he ran over to her - eagerly seeking an embrace. Ever since she was able to touch people again, Tav never seemed to let her go a day without least one hug. She laughed as they collided in an embrace, picking him off his feet slightly. "Welcome back, soldier!"
Tavrayn looked forward to every hug he could share with Karlach; no matter how many he gave, she seemed (at the very least) alright with more. And of course, she had a decade of hugs to catch up on. Tav was more than happy to help with that.
Getting picked up had startled him at first, but now he expected it (and even looked forward to it), squeezing the tiefling's shoulders tightly. Even with her engine cooled, she felt warm. Comforting, to him.
"Glad t' see you didn't get into too much trouble without me," he laughed. "What'd you do all day?"
