I had no idea what I was in for when I clicked on my first Harry YouTube video this past Fall. First consuming all things Harry, then 1D, then Larry. And now my first stunt season.

It is somewhat shocking what a visceral reaction I have to seeing néw pics and posts. How I scour Twitter, IG and now Tumblr to get reassurance that it is indeed just a stunt. I want these boys to be happy so why do I have a knot in my stomach if the pics aren’t with the person I want him to be with. It’s illogical and a little disconcerting.

Hoping I’m not alone in questioning my own reaction to this whole fandom and the connection I felt to Harry and Louis so quickly and deeply. I’m in it, now just have to ride it out.

@notmyfirstship could have been writing from inside my brain. Thank you for sharing for those of us who don’t quite fit the typical fan demographic.

Introduction

I just intended to use this blog as a visual journal, to keep things that I wanted to revisit. Not to write. But, as a writer, of course it didn’t take long for me to want to verbalize some of this stuff and how I’m feeling about it.

As of this writing, I literally have no followers, so I don’t expect anyone to read this. That said, it’s a way to share my thoughts “out loud.”

If not for Covid-19, I probably wouldn’t have come to this fandom at all. Or maybe I would have. My teenage daughter and her BFF introduced me to the Larry love story in October 2020 right before the Golden video came out–of course I knew about One Direction and the surface stuff that the general public knows. They made me sit down and listen to HS1, Walls, and Fine Line back to back. And watch the Adore You video–it was Louis the Fish that clinched it for me. 

Before that, I was absolutely in the dark about anything behind the scenes. As a young adult and middle grade novelist, the love story was the thing that hooked me. And boy, it hooked me hard. I went down the rabbit hole. Deep down the rabbit hole, I need to add. Fan made videos, master lists, Fan Fiction. The Rainbow Bears. Anything I could find about the music industry and stunting and tabloids. Some of it broke my heart, but most of it gave me such joy. 

Most of it was a lovely respite from the horrible-ness of Covid, and the US election. When I tell you that it made me feel joy again, I don’t think I’m exaggerating. And I’m Harry’s mother’s age. 

As a very new person to the fandom, I’ve seen a few people on this site who have been incredibly kind and patient to their followers. I’ve never interacted or asked a question, but I’ve seen them respond to people with kindness and measured patience. You’ve all said and done things that have made my journey into this fandom better, so thank you.

Because of bloggers like these, and others, I’m firmly in the camp that believes Harry and Louis have been committed since the X-Factor Days and continue to be so. I’m not a fan of the stunts, but I recognize that they happen and there are reasons why they continue to happen. I wish for both of them to be able to shed the lies and live freely and happily (if that’s what they want).

The hardest part of seeing all of these things go down is looking at it from a mom’s perspective. I cannot even fathom how hard it must have been for Anne (and Jay, and of course all the other 1D moms as well) to see what the industry did to their boys’ images and know what they had to give up and agree to in order to follow their dreams. It must have been really hard when they were young, but no less so as they get older. Your kids are always your kids. 

Anyway, end of my stream of consciousness. The world is a dumpster fire right now. But I believe in the love story, and I believe that some day they’ll be able to share it out loud. Love is love.
