There’s a protest going on against AI art over on artstation, so I feel like now is the time for me to make a statement on this issue!
I wholeheartedly support the ongoing protest against AI art. Why? Because my artwork is included in the datasets used to train these image generators without my consent. I get zero compensation for the use of my art, even though these image generators cost money to use, and are a commercial product.
Musicians are not being treated the same way. Stability has a music generator that only uses royalty free music in their dataset. Their words: “Because diffusion models are prone to memorization and overfitting, releasing a model trained on copyrighted data could potentially result in legal issues.” Why is the work of visual artists being treated differently?
Many have compared image generators to human artists seeking out inspiration. Those two are not the same. My art is literally being fed into these generators through the datasets, and spat back out of a program that has no inherent sense of what is respectful to artists. As long as my art is literally integrated into the system used to create the images, it is commercial use of my art without my consent.
Until there is an ethically sourced database that compensates artists for the use of their images, I am against AI art. I also think platforms should do everything they can to prevent scraping of their content for these databases.
Artists, speak out against this predatory practice! Our art should not be exploited without our consent, and we deserve to be compensated when our art is exploited for commercial use.

If you speak Italian, you will learn much from this timeless Christmas tale. (Although I now no longer endorse the Nintendo Switch.)
Enjoy!

SMT Strange Journey Redux Password
Hi, long time has passed since my last post. The project is quitely dead (if anyone is still asking about this ^^') because I found myself with little free time (thanks to work) so I preferred to use it for other activities. But SMT is always an interest, so I wanted to share this: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vRT42c9_b9SPYp7_k4tA_7YTVIJiM2VRf8at-QJe1g7rSzgo1Yj0z_bQSGhjQC500OgaNyRLd8Im08J/pub?gid=0&single=true&output=pdf It is basically a list of the demons I made and used in various play of SMT SJ Redux. They are not meant to be "perfect" demons but more of "pretty useful for that boss / level" :) Hope to be helpful to someone this way

Hey I just stumbled upon this blog while looking for sprites for my own SMT fangame! Is this project still alive, and would it be okay if I were to use some of your sprite edits?

@eirikrjs The Empusa in the first image is pretty like the one in SMT, could be a case of KCN?
do you know where that lamia & manticore image came from? i had a book with that manticore in which i've never been able to find again
The ones The Winnipeg Tribune published were from A Description of Three Hundred Animals (pages 20 and 21), published in 1768:

I know it's early but do you plan on making a follow up to your Identity Crisis essays once Final is released?
Haha, no. It won’t be necessary. But I will mention a couple of things from Part 3 that were seemingly prophetic:
…the Persona connection will all but ensureShin Megami Tensei endures, even as a perpetually lower budget release intendedto keep players content until the next major Persona title.
The game has been announced and will be released in-between another major Persona 5 delay; it will come out in Japan early next year.
But when you consider the furigana along with…[examples]… it becomesapparent that SMTIV’s target demographic was pre-teen or early-teen boys.
Look at Final’s cast again:
Tumblr media
If Green Boy is really Akira, as has been rumored, this game may follow his backstory as hinted by the game. He was even a boy during that period, so having him being relatively young makes sense. But then there’s Blue Girl,  Nozomi/Red Girl, and Yellow Jacket (not counting Druid). The cast is skewing pretty young for an SMT game, perhaps the youngest since…*gulp* Devil Children. All this may reinforce that the game is intended for a shounen audience, as I concluded with SMTIV.
Then there’s this thing…
Tumblr media
Dear god, don’t you just want to punch it already? If it’s a recurring character and not just a demon, this thing looks like it has the potential to be very annoying, possibly acting as a modern “mascot” character with a penchant for silly comic relief. Jury’s out until later in the week!

SMT’s Identity Crisis (Pt. 3 of 3): False Reincarnation
Tumblr media
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey might be one of the greatest examples of fanservice ever made. In genre where “fanservice” usually means crass pandering with skimpy outfits for female characters or other brazen titillation, Strange Journey instead provided its ravenous fans with more of what they already loved about Shin Megami Tensei: creative direction from Kazuma Kaneko, more demons, mature characters, an original setting, and proper apocalyptic atmosphere—a true SMT game in every sense. Neither the limits of the Nintendo DS hardware nor the series’ usual rough edges would suppress Strange Journey’s understanding that the greatest fanservice is respect for its audience.
There’s just one big problem: Strange Journey under-performed at retail relative to other games in the franchise and in spite of being on a platform with a large install base, moving only 127,946 copies in  Japan. To add insult to injury, Persona 3 Portable, the second re-release of Persona 3, was released in Japan only a few weeks after Strange Journey’s launch and completely outclassed it with 183,283 in sales. The niche Shin Megami Tensei had always relied on was apparently eroding away.
It was in this climate that development of Shin Megami Tensei IV began. “I first started thinking about [SMTIV] once Strange Journey, which came out October 2009, was finished,” said SMTIV’s director, Kazuyuki Yamai. “I’ve been hearing from fans who wanted an ‘official’ SMT sequel for ages, and we thought that we were finally at the point as a team where we were mature enough to tackle the job, so that’s how it got started.” So much like what happened with Persona, a new generation of creators would take hold of Shin Megami Tensei with a fresh, modern approach. But amid changing tastes, how much of SMT’s old identity would have to be sacrificed to bridge the series to the new players it so desperately needed?

Ba’al
I’m sure all of you have heard/seen what happened to Palmira. The temple of Bel (Ba’al) was destroyed. That really saddened me.
After all Ba’al is my favourite demon in SMT.
Although I’ve already made a Ba’al which was just an edit/recolor of the SMT If one, I decided, in spite of what happened to remake it from scratch. Ba’al will be in the game as an optional boss in a quest, a quest about a foreign deity who has no more an house to return, a foreign deity who has been forgotten by the people who once believed in him.

And a little extra: how the sprite was made! Step by step!
