[Transcript: Some contemporary feminists, appalled by the traditional way in which women have been treated in Western society, blame Judaism and the Bible for imposing a patriarchal system on the paganism of the Canaanites and its cult of the goddess. I think their blame is misplaced. Canaanite paganism was one of the most male-chauvinist, antifemale societies known to history. The name of the chief Canaanite deity, Baal, means simultaneously "husband" and "owner." In its verbal form, it refers to the male dimension of the sexual act. Baal-worship was a fertility cult, and the purpose of the gods was to make the harvest bountiful and the women pregnant every year. If pagans worshipped goddesses, it was not to celebrate their full humanity but to respond to their fecundity, their ability to bear children, as attested to by statuettes of goddesses that have been found, emphasizing their wombs and breasts. (When Playboy magazine emphasizes those parts of a woman, we correctly see it as dehumanizing. Shouldn't we recognize ancient fertility cults as doing the same thing?) It seems to me that open-minded feminists should see the Bible not as the herald of patriarchal society, but as the advocate of a new way of looking at women, seeing them, perhaps for the first time in human history, as full human beings, fashioned in the image of a God who transcends gender, rather than limiting their identity to the role of sex partners and mothers. /end]
This footnote from To Life! by Harold S. Kushner really put into words the issues I have with certain neopagan, witchy, divine feminine-type social circles, as a former pagan converting to Judaism. Published in 1993 but very relevant
Before anyone Kills me there's obviously a very long conversation to have about feminism and Judaism but neopagan womb worship is really Not It
