Expunging Huaraches in Mexico
The Mexican consul in Berlin, F. R. Serrano, wrote in 1925 to Aarón Sáenz, then minister of foreign affairs, that Mexico ought not to send "pranks," by which he meant huaraches, tequila, pulque, and Indian textiles to international World Exhibitions. "I find it contradictory that on the one hand we try to expunge the white cotton trousers and leather sandals [guaraches ] of the Indians from our nation, while on the other hand we make an effort to exhibit these articles in foreign countries."

In Italy there used to be well known tradition of woven shoes in and around Naples, called "intreccio". Some styles like this one, I've been told were also woven on the shoe last.
Today it's almost forgotten besides a few old photos like this one from shoe makers Gennaro and Paolo Scafora.
Similar in construction to the "Huarache Zapato" from Sahuayo in Mexico, Unfortunately its not possible to see how this pair was woven in the sole.
