“A Second Chance,”
A Scaramouche x GN!Reader Fic
Archon Quest Spoilers ahead!
*Post 3.3 scara goes by Kuni
You’re a scholar in Sumeru, plagued by the the faint memory of someone, someone you cared for deeply. But you couldn’t remember who. You soon meet a wandering eccentric, who seems vaguely familiar to you, but you just couldn’t figure out how.
Warnings: nothing serious slightly suggestive at a part but it’s like just a wee little making out, this is a flashback chapter btw. Also alcohol at the beginning

“One more round!” You shouted, laughing for seemingly no reason.
The Balladeer shook his head at the bartender, “No, don’t get them another round. They’ve had enough,”.
“But Scaraaaa,” you pouted, leaning on his shoulder with puppy dog eyes.
“No, Y/N. You’ve had ten cups of saki. Honestly I’m shocked you’re even functioning right now,” he sighed, placing a bag of mora on the counter for the bartender.
He gave way more mora than needed, but he didn’t seem to care. Maybe he was too embarrassed by how you were acting and just wanted to get out of the bar. He dragged you out of the bar, your arm around his neck and his hand on your waist to keep you from tripping. You were so drunk you could barely walk straight.
He was trying so hard to keep himself from just leaving you, but archons you wouldn’t shut up. Why did he even get drinks with you again? Oh yeah, you wanted to celebrate the one year anniversary of you two meeting. Although, he wouldn’t have agreed if he knew you would start acting like this. Soon a comment from you pulled him from his thoughts. “Scaraaa, you’re so pretty, you know that,” you said with a toothy grin.
“Thanks Y/N,” he said with a monotone voice.
“Honestly I could just-,” you interrupted yourself by grabbing his collar and pulling him in for a kiss.
He was caught off guard, and froze for a moment. He then pushed you off, “Y/N, you’re drunk, stop,”.
He grabbed your wrist, pulling you to the inn you two were staying in. “But I love you Scara,” you giggled, leaning against him while walking.
He sighed, “Y/N, you don’t know what you’re saying. You aren’t in the right state of mind right now, so just stop,”.
You pouted, “But I do, honeyyy,”.
“You’re a whole different person when you’re drunk, I swear,” he muttered, unlocking the room you were staying in.
You quickly rushed passed him as he opened the door, practically jumping onto the bed. He closed the door, before going over to you and taking your shoes off. He then pulled the covers over you, “I’m the sixth god damn harbinger, yet I’ve been reduced to a nanny that has to tuck your sorry ass in,”.
He then turned to leave before he felt you tugging on his clothes. “Why’re you leaving? Stay with me,” you whined.
“No, Y/N. For the last time you’re way too drunk. Goodnight,” he shook his head, leaving and closing the door behind him.
The next morning, you woke up with a banging headache. “Shit, what happened last night,” you muttered, stretching your arms in the air.
You didn’t even remember coming home. Who took you home? Your question was soon answered when you heard loud banging on the door. “Come in, Scara,” You shouted.
He opened the door, “How’d you know it was me?”.
“Because you’re the only person in Teyvat who would bang on a door like that this early in the morning,” you sighed, sinking back into the pillow.
Scaramouche sat down on the opposite end of the bed, “Wow, you look like shit. How are you feeling?”.
“Ugh, I am having the worst hangover right now,” you grumbled.
“And who’s fault is that?” He chuckled.
“Mine,” you answered, “How much did I have to drink last night anyways?”
“About ten cups of saki,”.
“Holy shit, that much?”.
“Yeah,” he nodded, “and you know what else you did?”.
“Oh god, what?” You asked, preparing for the worst.
“Well you confessed your love for me, and you kissed me. I must say you know how to draw attention like no other,” he smirked.
You felt your heart sink. It was the worst. “I did?” You asked nervously, praying to the archons he was joking.
“Yeah, you did. Pretty embarrassing for you. I’m sure everyone knew it was just drunk nonsense though,”.
“Oh, okay,”.
You nervously played with the hem of the blanket, before taking a deep breath. “I wasn’t lying when I said that. That I love you. You know that, right?” You asked, scared to look up at him.
“You weren’t?” He blinked.
“Nope, pure honestly,” you replied nervously.
“Oh,”.
You two sat in silence for what felt like an eternity. It was obvious to you he was trying to sort out his thoughts. You were internally freaking out, what if you just lost your only friend in Inazuma because you let your stupid feelings come out? Maybe you should have lied to him and said you were just rambling drunken lies last night. After a few minutes, you decided to break the silence. “I’m gonna go out for a walk, I’ll let you have some time to yourself,” you said as you got up, reaching for your shoes.
But then a hand caught your wrist.
Huh?
You turned to look at the Balladeer, before he quickly pulled you in, catching your lips in a soft kiss. You kissed back, adjusting yourself on his lap. Butterflies were flying rampantly in your stomach. You soon felt him smiling against your lips, breaking the kiss. A simple,“Wow,” was all you could say.
He laughed softly at your reaction, his face flushed. “So, can I take this as you loving me, as well?” You asked, slowly leaning in.
He rolled his eyes, “Shut up,”.
You opened your mouth to say something but were quickly interrupted by him kissing you for a second time. You shut your eyes, bringing your hand up to cup his soft cheek. He laid down on the bed, you quickly following. It slowly turned from soft kisses to making out. One of his hands roughly held onto your hair whilst the other wrapped around your waist pulling you closer. You let out a quiet moan against his lips, loving everything about this. “We’re just kissing and you’re already moaning? Damn, you’re whipped,” he teased from under you.
You felt your face heat up, fully processing what just happened. You leaned up before smacking his shoulder. He scoffed, “the fuck was that for?”.
You shrugged, trying to cover your blush, “I dunno,”.
The room soon went silent when a loud growl came from your stomach. “So, you gonna get off me so we can get you food, or?” He asked with a cocky grin.
You quickly got up, glancing at your reflection to fix your hair. You were interrupted, however, by scaramouche dragging you away. “What do you want?” He asked, opening the door.
“Hm, let’s go to Uyuu restaurant,” you suggested. You loved their breakfast menu.
He nodded, “sounds good,”
You squeezed his hand softly while walking, letting Scaramouche lead you to the restaurant. You then asked with a grin, “Does this mean I can call you my boyfriend now?”.
“I mean, if you want to the go ahead. I don’t care,” he said, rubbing the back of his neck.
Now that you thought about it, he never actually answered your question from earlier. If he actually reciprocated your love. He really had a hard time admitting his feelings, didn’t he? But you knew that, so you were satisfied. His affection was probably the closest you could get to him saying ‘I love you’, at least for the time being. So you were satisfied.

“Y/N, I won’t repeat myself so I need you to listen to what I’m about to say,” Faruzan sighed as she sat down beside you.
“What is it, Faruzan?”.
“Pardon me?”.
“Sorry, Madam Faruzan,”.
“That’s better,” Faruzan smiled, “Anyways, I came to assign you another thesis paper. I want you to write it on ancient runes from the desert. Specifically runes related to the Scarlett King,”.
“That’s oddly specific,”.
“Well thesis’s ought to be specific, don’t they?” She scoffed.
“That’s fair, I suppose,” You chuckled.
Faruzan then dropped a pile of books she had been holding infront of you. “Here, I already got all the resources you’ll need for you, youngster. You’re welcome,” she smiled proudly.
You examined the books, “I could have gotten these myself, you know, this wasn’t necessary,”.
“Don’t worry about it, it’s fine,” she waved her hand.
You nodded, “Thank you, Madam Faruzan,”.
“You’re very welcome, young one,” she said, before leaving to what you assumed was hold a lecture.
You sighed, picking up the pile of books and carrying it to your house. You have been having to write so many thesis papers recently. The life of a scholar truly is restless. Once you arrived home, you dropped all the books onto your table. You then got out a pen and paper and got to writing. A few hours later, you looked up to see Kuni opening your front door. He had started coming over so often that you just gave him a spare house key. “Hey, Kuni,” you smiled.
“Hey. What’s that you’re writing?” He asked, sitting on the sofa and peeking over your shoulder at the paper.
“It’s just some boring old thesis paper. It’s taking me awhile to write though, I’ll be up pretty late writing this,” you chuckled.
“Want me to make you food or something? So you don’t have to stop to make dinner,” he asked.
“You really don’t have to, but yes, i’d like that,” you smiled, looking back down at a book you had open beside you.
He nodded, heading to your kitchen. You did your best to tune out the sounds of him cooking whilst you wrote your thesis. About thirty minutes later, he came back with two bowls of chazuke. “Man, I haven’t had chazuke since I was in Inazuma,” you said as you blew on the hot bowl.
“I figured,”.
You quickly began eating it, shocked at the delicious taste. “This is even better then the Chazuke I had in Inazuma, damn,” you complimented, scarfing it down.
“Get your jaw off the floor and write,” he chuckled as he lightly pushed you.
You nodded, writing as you ate. You finally finished the long thesis at 10 pm. Six hours after you started. “Archons, that took you forever,” he groaned, stretching his muscles.
“Well I didn’t ask you to be here for four hours,” you shrugged, stacking some of the books and putting the pen away.
He snatched the thesis paper from the table, reading over it. “I have absolutely no idea what half of this stuff is, but it looks good from what I can tell,” he said as he handed you the paper.
“Thanks. Man I hope so, I might be able to graduate before summer if I do good on these last few thesis papers,” you smiled.
“Hm, well I guess I should get going, and you should sleep,” he said.
“It’s only ten, I’m not a child,” you whined.
“I don’t care, I don’t want that whole insomnia thing coming back,”.
You groaned, “Ugh, fine,”.
“Good luck on that thesis paper, good night Y/N,”
“Goodnight, Kuni,”.
You watched him as he left. You then went to your room and crashed, the last thing you thought of before sleeping being the thesis paper.

Chapter 9: In the Garden

———————————————————————
The week long break was more helpful than you thought it would be. You finally were able to sleep again, which permitted you to going back to the Akademiya. You had picked up gardening during that week, trying to find something besides talking to Kuni to pass the time. This is why Kaveh was at your doorstep three weeks later. “What do you want, Kaveh?” You asked, leaning against your door frame.
“Well, I was wondering if you’d like to help out with my little garden project I’m working on?” He asked, brushing his hair with his fingers.
You raised an eyebrow, “How do you want me to help, exactly?”.
“I noticed you took up gardening, so I thought maybe you’d like to take up the gardening portion of it all? Everything’s planted, I just wanted someone to be able to take care of the plants,” Kaveh explained.
You thought about it for a moment, then shrugged, “Sure, sounds fun. But side note, how the hell did you manage to finish its construction so fast? You asked me about the blue print a month ago,”.
“I have my ways,” he winked, a giddy look on his face, “Anyways, if you could do a little gardening right now that’d be really great,”.
You sighed, “You have no knowledge of gardening, yet you built a garden. God you’re lucky I’m your friend,”.
He chuckled, “I’ll take that as a yes, here come with me, I have the supplies already,”.
You followed him through Sumeru City, soon entering the newly built garden. You admired how beautiful it was. “How much time did it take to move all these plants here?” You asked.
“About a week, it was kind of expensive, some of these are from the other side of the nation,”.
“You need to stop with these expensive ass projects and start actually saving money. Unless you want to keep living with Alhaitham,” you elbowed him with a smirk.
“Trust me, I want to move out more than anything. Anyways, are you going to get gardening or not?” He sighed.
You smiled, crouching down and patting the soil. The dirt was drier than the desert sand.“Archons this dirt is dry, when was the last time you watered the plants?” You asked.
“Uh, I’ve been really busy so, they haven’t really been watered at all. In the time they’ve been here I mean,” he answered, nervously pulling at his sleeve.
“You’re so smart yet so dumb,” you shook your head.
“Excuse me?”.
You ignored him, “Where are the tools?”.
“Oh yeah, they’re over here,”.
He led you to a shed in a more secluded area. It was smart of him to put the shed here, it really was an eyesore. “Was this really the best you could do for a shed?” You giggled at the run down looking shack.
“I had to save money where I could for this,” he shrugged, unlocking the shed. He then tossed you the keys, “keep it, I have an extra key at my house,”.
You nodded, “Alright, thanks,”.
“I should be thanking you, for agreeing to help. So, thank you,” he smiled, holding the door open for you.
You shrugged, “I like gardening, it’s no problem,”.
You began sorting through the tools in the shed, finding what you’d need. “Well, I really need to get going. I’ll be seeing you Y/N,” he said, starting to walk away.
“Alright, bye!” You shouted loud enough for him to hear.
You took out some watering cans and a shovel. You figured this probably wouldn’t take that long. You quickly discovered the watering cans were empty and there were no sources of water nearby. You’d just have to go to a restaurant or something to fill them up. What a pain. You groaned at the heat, the sun beaming down on you. Okay, maybe you’d get some water for drinking as well. Sumeru’s heat was something else sometimes. You picked up two watering cans to take with you, leaving the garden in search of water. You soon found a small restaurant nearby and sighed in relief. “Y/N?” Someone next you said, approaching you in the corner of your eye.
“Oh, Kuni. What a nice surprise seeing you here,” you smiled.
“Uh, what’s with the cans?” He asked, glancing down at what you were holding.
“Remember that guy who asked us about what blueprint looked better for a garden?” You asked in return.
“Yeah, why?”.
“Well he finished building said garden ridiculously fast, and he asked me to do the gardening,”.
“What, is he too lazy to do it himself?” He asked.
“I’m sure he would if he had the time, but he’s not even in the city most days, and I don’t know if he can afford to hire someone to take care of the garden while he’s gone,” you shrugged.
“Then he shouldn’t have built a garden,”.
“You’re probably right, I don’t know where he even got the idea from. Anyways, wanna help? With the gardening,”.
“Why should I help?”.
“Because you’re my friend, and it would be fun to do this together,” you smiled, nudging his shoulder with a watering can.
He took a watering can from you, “Fine then. Also, why are you taking the watering cans here?”.
“There’s no water at the garden, the fountain isn’t even running water yet,”.
“That’s annoying,” he grumbled, walking into the restaurant, you following behind him.
“You’re in a more sour mood than usual,” you chuckled.
“Well I’m not exactly a saint,”.
“Never said you were,”.
He sighed, heading over to a staff member and asking for water. “That was kind of embarrassing going in there just to fill up watering cans,” you signed as you left the building.
“Blame your architect friend for that,” Kuni chuckled.
You led him back to the garden, setting your can down and sitting for a moment. “I have to admit, this place is nicer than I thought it’d be,” he commented as he sat beside you.
You two soon began gardening, the heat causing excessive sweat. You rubbed your forehead a couple hours later, unknowingly rubbing dirt on it. “Hey you got something there,” kuni chuckled, rubbing it off of your forehead.
You thought this action was sweet, until you realized what he had actually done. He smeared even more dirt on your face. He began laughing as you smacked his hand away. “Oh you’re so fucking on, you little shit,” you giggled, grabbing a clump of dirt and throwing it directly at his face.
This led to you two playing in the dirt like children. Clumping up little dirt balls and throwing them at eachother while having little fits of laughter. Eventually, a clump of dirt directly hit Kuni’s eye. You couldn’t even imagine how badly that must have stung. “Ah, shit,” Kuni winced.
“Oh shoot, you okay?” you asked while walking over to him, then putting a hand on his shoulder.
That’s when he slammed a ball of dirt directly on your face. You then began wiping it off with a small laugh, “Okay I deserved that,”.
Your little “dirtball” fight went on for another ten or so minutes. You hadn’t even realized how dirty you had gotten until you laid down, needing a breather. “Fuck,” you wheezed, “I haven’t done anything like that since I was a kid,”.
He laid down next to you, “It disgusts me that you’ve done something like this before,”.
“Oh shut up, you dick. You started this,” you laughed, looking at the mess you made.
The place was covered in dirt. What had started as good fun turned into a hassle very quickly. “Shit, we should clean this fast. If Kaveh see’s this he’ll kill me,” you sighed, getting up.
You two quickly used left over from the watering cans and cloths from the shed to clean up all the dirt. Thankfully, you had just put all the tools away once Kaveh arrived, the place looking spotless. “Do I want to know why you’re so dirty?” He asked, approaching you.
“What can I say? Gardening is messy,” Kuni shrugged.
“What’s he doing here?” Kaveh asked.
“Oh I ran into him while getting water for the cans and asked him to help,” you answered, trying to wipe some more dirt off of yourself.
“Hm, alright. Well thank you both for helping, looks like you guys did a good job” he said as he glanced around.
“No problem,” You said as you tried to stifle your giggle.
Kuni pinched you, “It’s late, you should get going,”.
“Damn, you’re right. It’s pretty dark and I’m exhausted,” you said, cracking your back.
You said your goodbyes to the both of them before heading back to your home, happy to get into a shower and clean yourself off.

Authors notes:
•did a little time skip for funsies
•also I didn’t want to write Y/N’s break from the Akademiya, they were mostly laying around their house, gardening, and talking to Kuni tbh 💀
•debating when to throw in the next flashback chapter, it’s a lil too soon now but it’ll probably be around chapters 11-13.
•this whole thing is changing as it progresses I wasn’t even planning on bringing Kaveh back for awhile 😭

“You really should brush your hair more , s#}¥a,” you giggled, brushing your fingers through his hair.
“Whatever,” a man with a blurred face sighed, looking away.
You two sat in silence, the man’s head resting on your lap. You mindlessly played with his hair, your other hand grabbing rocks and throwing them into the small pond in-front of you. It was so simple, yet so perfect. “We should do this more often,” you suggested, twirling your fingers in his hair.
“I would, if had the time, you know that. Work keeps me busy,” he said, staring at the sun setting.
You sighed, “No break time for T$& B-/!$d:&r, is there?”.
“Not really,” he smirked, leaning up and cupping your cheek. He kissed you softly, resting a hand on your shoulder, “but I’ll make it up to you,”
“Oh?”.
“Yep,” he replied, placing a sloppy wet kiss on your neck.
You began laughing, pushing his head away “Hey, S@$/-m$0:$e, knock it off,”.
“Hey, airhead, I’m talking to you,” Kuni sighed.
“Oh, sorry,” you chuckled, rubbing your neck.
He shook his head, “Damn, what had you so deep in thought?”.
“Oh just, I had a strange dream last night. It honestly felt more like I was reliving a memory, than dreaming, if that makes sense,” you answered.
“It does. Mind me asking what it was? The memory,” he questioned.
You nodded, “it was like I was with a lover, I guess? We were sitting by a lake in Inazuma. But the weird thing was I have no recollection of this memory, nor did I have a lover while I was in Inazuma. It was strange,”.
“Do you know the person? The lover, I mean,”.
“You’re weirdly interested in this dream,” you chuckled, “anyways, the persons face was blurred, and whenever I said their name it was just nonsense. I have no idea who it was,”.
“Hm, strange,” he said.
He looked like there was something he wasn’t saying, but you didn’t bring it up. “That aside, what were you trying to tell me before I started talking about my dream?”.
“I was just wondering what that Tighnari gave you,”.
“Oh, this?” You waved the sedative.
He nodded. “It’s a sedative to help me sleep. He said that if I take it over the course of the week it’ll help me get into a better sleeping habit. Now that I think about it, maybe this would help Layla,” you thought, spinning the bottle so the liquid swirled inside.
“Layla? Who’s that?”.
“She’s a scholar for the Akademiya, she’s a friend of mine. The poor girl can never seem to get enough sleep, it’s some condition,” you answered.
“Becoming a scholar with that kind of condition seems like an idiotic choice,” he said.
“I think it’s more impressive than anything, I respect her for her ambition,”.
“Hm, well anyways looks like we’re here” Kuni pointed out, your house in the distance.
“Thank god my feet are killing me,”.
“That wasn’t even that long of a walk,” he sighed.
“Shut up,” you groaned, lightly hitting his shoulder.
“Y/N? Where have you been?” A voice boomed from behind you.
You and Kuni turned, seeing a tall blonde making his way over to you. “I went to see Tighnari, I’ve been having insomnia recently,” you answered.
Kaveh nodded, “Ohh, I guess that makes sense, and who’s this?”.
Kaveh pointed at Kuni. “I’m just a wanderer, you can call me Kuni,” he answered, crossing his arms.
“Oh, well I’m Kaveh, it’s a pleasure,” Kaveh responded, shuffling through his back from something. He quickly pulled out to blueprints, “I’ve been needing you opinion, which of these looks better? I’m trying to get a garden built near the city,”.
“Isn’t a garden kind of below your architectural genius? Besides, couldn’t you have just asked Alhaitham?” You asked, examining the blueprints.
He shook his head, “This city could honestly use more gardens, the lack of green here repulses me-“.
You interrupted him, “The city is literally built on a tree,”.
He groaned, “Whatever, we could still stand to have another garden in this city. Also, to answer your other question, don’t be ridiculous. I’d never ask Alhaitham for help, I can’t stand that man,”.
“Then why live with him?”.
“Y/N I swear to the archons,”.
“Okay, okay, also I would have to pick this one,” you giggled, pointing at a blueprint.
He turned to Kuni, “What do you think?”.
“I’d have to agree with Y/N. The other one is kind of boring,” Kuni shrugged.
“It is isn’t it? I rushed these the other night. Anyways, thanks you two, I appreciate it. I’ll see you around,” he thanked, before walking away.
“Uh, who was that, exactly?” Kuni asked, watching him freaking out over his missing keys in the distance.
“A former student at the Akademiya. He became an architect after graduating, but unfortunately for him he spent so much money building his designs that he ended up completely broke,” you explained, turning and walking to your home.
“So he’s a special kind of stupid, huh?”.
You chuckled, “Kind of, but he was still once a scholar. He has brains, he just doesn’t always use them,”.
You unlocked the door to your home, stepping inside. “Thanks for walking me here, you want to come in?” You asked, turning to him once more.
He shook his head, “I have some one I need to talk to, thanks for the offer though. Do what Tighnari said and get rest, I may not be there if you faint again,”.
You nodded, “Yes sir, feel free to stop by anytime,”.
“Noted. Anyways, I’ll see you,”.
“Alright, see you,” you waved goodbye to him before shutting your door.
You kicked your shoes off before flopping onto your couch. Your mind couldn’t stop going back to that dream, it felt so real. You couldn’t get it out of your head. You didn’t mention this to Kuni, but the man’s voice sounded an awful lot like his. It was probably just your brain trying to give the man some sort of voice though so you didn’t mention it to him. You honestly weren’t sure why this dream mattered so much to you, it was just a dream at the end of the day. Soon your thoughts were interrupted by your stomach growling.
Oh right, food.
You got up, heading to your kitchen to make a quick brunch.

“Again, apologies ma’am, but due to the Sakoku Decree we can’t allow you to leave the nation,” The woman behind the counter apologized, a pitiful look in her eyes.
“It’s…fine. You weren’t the one who made the decree, so you have nothing to apologize for,” you shook your head, picking up your papers with a huff.
As you walked further into Ritou, you looked down at your papers. The big DENIED stamp seemingly taunting you. You clicked your tongue, before crumbling the papers up and tossing them behind you.
“Watch where you’re throwing things, dumbass,” a voice spoke behind you.
You stopped in your tracks, turning to see a purple-haired man behind you. You took note of his clothes, he looked to be a member of the Fatui. “Ah shit, I’m sorry. It’s just been a long day. I’m a scholar from Sumeru, and I was doing some research here before the Sokaku decree was implemented. But now, because of the decree, I’m kind of stuck here,” you explained, rubbing the back of your neck.
He laughed, “What an awful situation, being stuck in these borders,”.
“And you’re not stuck here? Are you perhaps a diplomat?”.
He nodded, “Indeed I am, what an astute observation. I won’t be here any longer than I need to, unfortunate that you can’t say the same,”.
“Well I really don’t have any control over that, do I? Man, this will definitely delay my graduation by a lot,” you sighed.
You doubted you’d even be able to send letters to Sumeru, even if you were with the Akedemiya. You could find a way to escape, but you chose to not try and illegally leave the country. The criminal life wasn’t something you were dying to live. “Delay your graduation? How unfortunate. Anyways, while I would just love to stay and chat with you, I have something to attend to. Bye,” he said, before walking past you.
You watched him has he walked away, his veil flowing behind him.
What an interesting man.
The next day, you ran into him again while walking through the streets of Ritou. You gave a small wave and smile while you walked by.
“Oh, it’s you. Hi,” he greeted, before continuing walking off the other direction
You followed him, catching his attention once more. He sighed, “Why are you following me like some lost child? Do you have nothing better to do?”.
You shrugged, “I really don’t, if I’m being honest, and you interest me,”.
He blinked. You were weirdly reminding him of a certain doctor at that moment. “Interesting? Do you even know who I am?”
“Well based on the fatui symbols on your clothes, it’s obvious you’re with the fatui. But you aren’t wearing a regular skirmisher uniform, so it’s safe to say you are a higher ranked member, possibly a harbinger?” You deduced, tilting your head slightly.
“That would be correct, I’m the 6th of the fatui harbingers, the Balladeer,” he nodded, “I see your head isn’t completely full of air,”.
“…Thanks?”.
He sighed, “You’re a student at the Akedemiya, aren’t you? What, are you trying to get information on the Fatui?”.
“No, you can relax. No offense, but I really don’t care for the Fatui. I just genuinely have nothing to do here,”.
“Is that so? How do I know you’re not lying right now,”.
You chuckled, “What reason would I have to lie? All my research I was asked to do here is complete. Besides, I’m trapped in Ritou, so even if I were lying and was trying to get information out of you, I’d be helpless if you found out,”.
He crossed his arms, “I suppose you have a fair point. But i really don’t care,”.
He turned on his heel, walking down the streets of Ritou. You chased after him, hurrying to walk beside him again. “No but like hear me out okay,”.
“I’ll pass,”.
“I’ve heard the 6th Harbinger has an awful temper. Most Fatui can’t stand you. Based on that, I’d say im probably not the only lonely one between the two of us,”.
The Balladeer stopped walking and gave you a look, “You know you should really watch your fucking tongue when you speak to me,”.
You paused for a moment. The man could be truly terrifying, couldn’t he? You gave an awkward smile, “Sorry that sounded rude, didn’t it?,”.
He didn’t respond, starting to walk off again. You jogged once more to catch up, “I was just thinking that it wouldn’t be the worst thing for you if you had to put up with me for a little bit during your time in Ritou,”.
Scaramouche groaned, “Fine, since you’re being so god damn annoying about it, I’ll allow you to accompany me in Ritou. It’s not like I have any important business to attend to at the moment, just don’t be a nuisance or else,”.
“Or else…?”.
“You don’t want to know,” he warned.
You giggled, “Okay,”.
“I’m heading to a restaurant near here, so you better have Mora. Like hell am I paying for you,” he said as he signaled you to follow him with his hand.
“Relax, I have plenty of Mora on hand,” you assured, noticing a stall selling Dango, “Ooo, could we get some Dango? I’ve never tried it before,”.
“Absolutely not, and trust me you don’t want to eat it either, it’s disgusting,”.
You sighed, “Okay, whatever,”.
The balladeer groaned in annoyance as you two walked, why did he let you accompany him? You were just a hassle. But he had already said yes, and he was a man of his word, when he was able to be.
Kuni sipped his tea while recalling that event. He still wasn’t sure why he had agreed in the first place. Although he had to admit, he was glad he did. Even though you don’t remember it.

Chapter 6: Seeking Help

“I’m shocked you would make the trip here by yourself, with your condition. You’re extreme lack of sleep has severely weakened you. If you weren’t a vision bearer, you would have passed out on the walk here,” Tighnari sighed, fiddling with his ear.
You chuckled, “Sorry about that, I almost had this guy walk me here, but something came up on his end,”.
“You know, I’m hearing a lot about this guy, do you two have something going on?,”.
You turned from him, a hint of embarrassment on your face “No, not like that. We just met a few days ago,”.
“Relax, I was just kidding. Anyways, that aside, I think this lack of sleep might just be due to stress. I think you should take a week long break from the Akedemiya. All this stress seems to be taking a toll on you. And as for the paranoia, I’d just chalk it up to stress as well ,” he explained.
You groaned, “A whole week? I’m trying to graduate as soon as possible,”.
“I know I know, but your graduation will be prolonged even longer if you don’t take that break. Honestly, this is why I told you not to take that trip to Inazuma. You got stuck there for such a long time because of the sakoku decree. If it weren’t for that, you’d be graduated already,” Tighnari said, getting up from his chair.
You chuckled, “I guess you’re right,”.
Tighnari handed you a bottle of a light blue liquid, “This is a sedative that’ll help you sleep. Take it over the course of the week and reduce the dosage slightly before you sleep each night. It should help you get into a better sleep schedule by the time you return to the Akademiya,”.
You nodded, “Thank you, Tighnari, here take this,”.
You handed him a bag of mora, which he refused to take. “Please, keep it. I don’t need any Mora. Besides, I’d never charge a friend,” Tighnari waved his hand, walking to the door.
“By the way, Y/N, please get some rest here. Stay the night, if you need. The walk back is a long one. While I’m sure you could make it, it’d be better for you if you’d just relax,” he requested.
“I will. Again, thank you Tighnari, I appreciate it,” you smiled, leaned back into the bed.
He nodded, “Really, it’s nothing, don’t worry about it,”.
Tighnari closed the door behind him as he left, the silence seeming awfully loud. You sighed, turning onto your side. You poured a decent amount of the sedative into the lid of the bottle and drank it, cringing at the bitter taste. You closed the bottle before closing your eyes, drowsiness overtaking you.
You awoke to shuffling in the room. You quickly got up, looking around. You sighed in relief when you saw a familiar purple-haired man sitting in the chair on the other side of the room. “Holy shit you scared me, I didn’t actually think you’d come all the way out here,” you sighed.
He shook his head, “it’s nothing, really. Besides, I happened to be near here anyways. Thought I’d stop by since it’s so late,”.
You looked out the window, it was pitch black outside. You had went to bed around 11. How long had you been asleep?
“Huh. Also, what was that thing that came up this morning?” You asked, turning to face him again.
“Just a favor a friend asked of me. I kind of owe her one,” he smiled.
“Hm,” you hummed, deciding not to press any further.
Kuni spoke up, “You should go back to sleep, I’ll take you back in the morning,”.
You sighed, “Are you sure you want to sit there for the rest of the night? There’s enough room here for two,”.
“I wouldn’t want to bother you, just relax and get some sleep,”.
“Aren’t you in a nice mood right now. Anyways, it wouldn’t bother me. Actually I insist, sleep here,” you said, patting the spot beside you.
He sighed, “Fine. If you want me to that badly I suppose I’ll oblige,”.
You scooted over a bit as he laid down on the bed, his shoes dropping onto the floor. He ended up hogging almost all of the blanket, leaving you with barely any of it. “Comfy?” You giggled.
“Shut up, if you want more of the blanket, just scoot in,” he sighed.
“Hm, alright,” you nodded, rolling over to him.
You two were fairly close, your legs practically entangled with his legs. “I didn’t mean scoot in that close, but if that’s what you want,” he chuckled, before shutting his eyes.
“Good night, Kuni,”.
“Night,”.
You woke up to the sun beaming into your eyes. The blanket had been entirely torn off of you while you were sleeping. You turned to look at him, poking him until he woke up. “What do you want?” He groaned, rubbing his eyes.
“Just thought it would be a good time to wake you up,” you shrugged, “Also, you took the whole god damn blanket,”.
“Well that’s too bad, isn’t it?” He muttered.
You then heard a knock on the door. “Come on in!” You shouted.
Tighnari entered. “Ah, Kuni. I see you found your way to the room Y/N was staying in just fine,” he said, closing the door behind him.
“I did. Anyways, I’ll wait outside. Come out when you’re ready to leave, Y/N,” He responded, putting his shoes and hat back on before leaving the room.
“You two just met a few days ago yet you’re already sharing a bed?” He raised an eyebrow, sitting in the chair across the room.
You rolled your eyes, “Don’t go jumping to conclusions. I was just being nice. Sleeping in that chair would be uncomfortable,”.
“There are other free rooms here,” he smirked.
“Tighnari,”.
Tighnari began to laugh a bit, “Relax, I was just kidding. I just came in here to see how you are doing,”.
“I feel pretty good. I’ll still take the week off, like you said, but I already feel like I have more energy,” you smiled.
“That’s good, are you feeling well enough to make the trip back to Sumeru City?” He questioned.
“Yeah, I’ll be fine,”.
“Good, good. Remember to take the sedative with you and have a safe trip back. By the way, I sent a letter to the Akedemiya explaining why you won’t be there for the next week. Believe me, you will be excused from all consequences,” he reassured.
You thanked him, before saying your goodbyes and leaving the room. “You done?” Kuni asked.
“Yep, let’s head back,” you nodded.
You then both began the long trip to the akedemiya in a comfortable silence, both feeling much better about your condition.

The group fell into silence as they heard loud banging coming down the stairs. “I’m okay!” itto hollered from the bottom of the stairs.
“Goodness, is he already drunk?” miko chuckled.
Heizou shrugged, fiddling with the corner of a blanket, “I wouldn’t be surprised,”.
Itto quickly walked past everyone and towards the drinks. He popped open a bottle of champagne , “Man why are we just sitting and talking, it’s New Year’s Eve! Let’s get this party started!”.
Scaramouche sighed, “Itto, that’s for when it hits midnight,”.
“Oh,”.
Ayato chuckled, “While we need to save Champagne for later, if any of you want something else to drink, go ahead. There’s a reason we asked you all to bring drinks,”.
Everyone got out of their seats and began pouring drinks. Scaramouche clicked his tongue, “You’re all alcoholics,”.
You flicked his nose, “and yet you just got a bottle of beer,”.
He rolled his eyes , following you back to the sofa. You noticed he gradually got louder and less bitchy throughout the night, the alcohol seeming to make him let lose a bit. “You’re in a good mood right now,” you smiled, sipping on some wine.
He just laughed in response, opening another beer. How much had everyone drank? You lost count. Maybe Scaramouche was right about that comment earlier. “Hey guys, don’t panic, don’t panic, it’s 11:53,” itto yelled, everyone going quiet.
“Well what are you all waiting for, turn the damn tv on!” Yae sighed, nudging Itto.
Everyone began scrambling to find the remote, before discovering Heizou had it as he was changing the channel. “The champagne is on the table, feel free to get a glass,” Ayaka smiled.
Ayato got up and began passing out the glasses. “It’s funny how much Itto is freaking out over this,” Childe laughed.
“Pfft, like you didn’t get that excited waking up on Christmas morning,” Scaramouche teased. Everyone then stood around the television waiting for the ball to drop to mark the new year. Amidst all the chatter and laughter, you couldn’t help but notice Scaramouche’s arm wrap around your waist.
Huh.
You leaned into him, noticing Ayato and Childe drunkenly bickering. “Would you two stop, it’s almost new years,” Ei sighed while mindlessly playing with her hair.
Childe shook his head, pulling out his phone and opening the camera. He then walked to the other side of the room to get everyone in the shot. “Hey guys, guys it’s coming!” Itto yelled.
“Three!” Everyone shouted.
Damn Scaramouche was close, you could feel his breath on your face.
“Two!”.
You felt your cheeks getting redder. You weren’t sure if it was the alcohol or the nerves.
“One!”.
“Happy New Years!” The group cheered.
Scaramouche pulled you in and kissed you. A firm hand on your waist.
Oh.
You felt chills go up your spine. You kissed him back, your hands resting on his chest.
As soon as the kiss started, it ended, you two quickly joining the conversation the others were having. Although given how loud they were, it was more of a screaming match. The rest of the night was blur, and it felt like one moment you were drinking with the group and the next you had woken up in your bed.
You turned off your alarm, rubbing your eyes. You then went to the kitchen to get some water.
You took a sip of the water, “how late was I up last night? God damn,”.
You yawned while getting some food out for your dog, (dog name) quickly rushing over to eat. You giggled at him, scratching his ears.
How did I even get home?
Unfortunately for you, you couldn’t remember shit. The alcohol really wasn’t great for memory. You felt like something really important had happened, but you had no clue what. You chose to ignore the feeling and get something to help with your god awful hangover. It was probably nothing.
Right?
———————————————————————
Scaramouche’s Pov:
He ran his fingers through his hair, god his head was pounding. He went to his bathroom and splashed his face with water multiple times. He was soon interrupted by his roommate banging on his door. “What, Moron?” Scaramouche yelled.
“There’s something you gotta see!” Childe yelled back.
He sighed, walking over to his door and opening it, “What is it?”.
“So, I’m assuming you don’t remember much from last night, right?”.
“Nope, why?”.
“Well…” Childe chuckled, showing Scaramouche the picture he took that night.
“Huh, what’s so special about thi-“ Scaramouche cut himself off, shocked to see him kissing Y/N.
Childe laughed, “I knew it! You’re so into them, aren’t you?”.
He groaned, “Fuck off, and send me that,”.
Childe smiled, “Do you really not remember kissing them?”.
“Nope, and I hope they don’t either,” he gritted his teeth.
“Oh?”.
“I just,” Scara sighed, sitting on his bed, “I don’t like the idea of that being how they remember kissing me. It’s so..”.
“Impersonal? Weird? Drunk?”.
“..Yeah,”.
“Well, if it makes you feel any better, I honestly think Y/N is super into you,”.
Scaramouche blinked, “and why do you think that?”.
He shrugged, “Look for the signs dude, you’ll see,”.
Scaramouche laid back down onto his bed, “You’re no help, just get out,”.
Childe sighed, “Okay okay, see you dude,”.
As soon as the door closed, he looked at the picture Childe sent him.
I can’t believe I did that.
He was nervous to see Y/N again. Who knows how awkward it’ll be if they remember him kissing them. He groaned.
I’ll just have to get it over with.
He quickly pulled out his phone, texting Y/N to meet up.

———————————————————————
“What are you doing,” Scaramouche asked as your grabbed his phone.
“Playing Christmas music, your phone is connected to your cars speaker and I can’t handle silent car drives,” you answered, searching for last Christmas on Spotify.
“How do you know his password? I’ve asked him a million times and he still hasn’t given it to me,” Childe whined from the back of the car.
“I actually like her so she gets more privileges than you,” Scara said bluntly.
“Aww,” you smiled, scaramouche turning to hide his embarrassment.
Childe slapped him, “Eyes on the road, bowl cut,”.
Scaramouche ignored your laughter, “Shut up before I kick you out of the car, Childe,”.
You did your best to tune out their constant arguing until you finally made it to Ayaka’s house. “I’m sure Ayaka’s brother hates Childe,” you sighed.
“Now why would he hate me?” Childe asked.
“Who doesn’t hate you,” Scaramouche sighed, slamming the car door shut.
You all walked to the door, Scaramouche banging on it loudly. Ayaka quickly answered, “Oh hey you guys! Welcome! Please, come in. Everyone’s hanging out in the living room. Make yourself at home,”.
You all thanked her before you made your way to the living room. You flopped onto the couch with a sigh. “You okay, dear?” Miko asked with a chuckle, sipping on wine.
“No I’m fine, just tired from my awful car ride,”.
“Aw, I’m so sorry you had to deal with that,” Scaramouche said sarcastically, “Now once you’re taking up all the couch,”.
You rolled your eyes and got up, leaning against the side of the couch. “Be nice, Kuni,” Ei chuckled.
“Don’t call me that,” Scaramouche huffed.
Childe took his jacket off and sat on the floor, placing a drink onto the coffee table, “She’s right, Kuni. You should soften up a little,”.
Scaramouche kicked himself “OW,” Childe yelled, elbowing his leg in return.
“I can’t stand you sometimes,” Scaramouche groaned.
“Oh yeah? How do you think I feel,” Childe said.
Ayato joined you all, sitting on a chair besides the couch, “Now, now, you two. Let’s try not to fight on a holiday, hm?”.
“For once I agree with him,” Yae sighed.
“For once? Am I really that disagreeable?” Ayato asked.
“Believe me, you are,”.
“You wound me, Lady Yae,”.
Ei put her hand on Miko’s shoulder, “Honey, be civil,”.
Yae chuckled, “This is me being civil, Ei,”.
“I don’t think I’d call that civil,” Scara sighed.
Suddenly you all heard a familiar voice shouting down the hall. “Damn Ayaka, you got a cool place!” Itto yelled.
“Oh, thank you, Itto,” she laughed.
“OOOO If if isn’t my good bro Ayato! Nice seeing you! I didn’t know you’d be here!” Itto smiled as he entered the room, hugging Ayato.
“Good seeing you too, friend,” Ayato chuckled.
You poked Scara’s shoulder before whispering, “I see they still have their bromance going strong,”.
“they sure do,”.
“You know if you weren’t such a stubborn ass, you’d have that with Childe,”.
He elbowed you without saying anything. You giggled at him. Soon more people began arriving, the room filled with drinking, chatting, and laughter. “How long are we staying here again?” Scaramouche sighed.
You smacked his shoulder, “Don’t be rude, Scara. But to answer your question, probably a little after dessert,”.
He groaned leaning against your shoulder. “Tired?” You giggled.
“Shut up,”.
“Ayaka, could I ask what smells so good?” Kazuha questioned.
“The Chinese just got here, I hope you all don’t mind takeout for dinner. My brother and I really aren’t cooks,” she answered.
“Are you kidding? I love Chinese food,” Itto got up excitedly.
Everyone went to the dining room with their plates, enjoying the meal. You started eating some sesame chicken off of Scara’s plate. “Why are you eating my food, don’t you have your own?” Scaramouche sighed.
“I ran out and all the Sesame Chicken is gone,” you shrugged.
He rolled his eyes, before going back to berating Childe. “I’m sorry I can’t use chopsticks, damn,” Childe apologized.
“Only an idiot could be this bad with chopsticks, even Itto can use them,” Scaramouche said.
Yae sighed, “Scaramouche, it really isn’t that big of a deal, calm down,”.
“Exactly!” Childe groaned.
“She’s right, it doesn’t matter. Childe might be an idiot, but who actually cares. Just try and enjoy dinner,” you sighed, eating another piece of sesame chicken.
“How am I supposed to enjoy my dinner if you’re eating it all?” He asked.
You shrugged. “Oh my god,” Scaramouche laughed.
Finally, the time came for you all to leave. Scaramouche grabbed your arm before you could go out the door, handing you a box. You opened it, seeing a gorgeous set of earrings. “Aw, Scara, you shouldn’t have. Man I feel bad now I don’t have anything for you!” You sighed.
“Don’t feel bad, and don’t thank me. Merry
Christmas, or whatever,” he shook his head.
He took the earrings out and putting them on you. “They look nice,” he complimented.
“Thanks,” you smiled.
“Ahem,” Ayato coughed, pointing up above for two.
There was mistletoe.
Fuck.
You felt heat on your cheeks. “Uh, it’s kinda cold. I’m gonna get to the car before Childe takes the passenger seat,” you said, quickly turning on your heel and running to the car.
Scaramouche shook his head as he followed you, unlocking the car. The car ride home was more silent now, you were all too tired to hold a long conversation.
“Hey the snow infront of our house has been cleared out now so we’re just gonna drop you off here,” he said as you arrived at your apartment.
“That’s good, I’ll see you on New Year’s Eve I guess. Thank you again for the gift, but the way,” you smiled as you exited the car.
“Don’t mention it,” he smiled back.
“Gift? Why did she get a gift from you and I didn-,” you slammed the door before Childe finished his sentence.
You went back to your apartment, passing out as soon as you fell onto your bed.

———————————————————————
“Hey, hey Y/N, wake up!” Your friend shouted.
You opened your eyes, it was your childhood friend, Advika. “Advika, where are we?” You asked, sitting up.
You glanced at your surroundings, it was incredibly dark. You could barely make out anything, except for a few lit torches in the distance. Something about this place just felt, off. But you weren’t able to describe how. “Well, we were walking around in the forest when we fell into some cave. Then we woke up in this random place. Man, we probably should have been more careful, huh?” Advika chuckled.
You heard footsteps approaching you. You grabbed Advika’s hand and stood up, your other hand reaching to your pocket knife. “Who’s there?” You yelled, backing up slowly.
Suddenly, a band of hillichurls rushed towards you two, weapons at the ready. “Shit, we need to leave,” you muttered, turning around and sprinting deeper into the cave.
It felt like you two were running for hours, every twist and turn leading you to an area with scarier beasts than the last. You barely managed to fend off the monsters, and you risked your life the further into the cave you went. By now you both realized you were in the Abyss. Desperate to escape, you immediately ran up a flight of stone stairs as soon as you saw them. “The Abyss has stairs?? That’s weird,” Advika commented, struggling to keep up with you.
You rolled your eyes. You finally reached the top of the stairs, you let out a loud sigh. You turned around, noticing that the monsters from the area below stopped chasing you. Your friend nudged you and pointed in front of you both. When you looked in the direction she was pointing, a wave of instant regret washed over you. A large beast stirred, getting ready to attack. The beasts below probably knew this was up there, that’s why they stopped chasing you. You considered running back the way you came, but you know you would only run back into the other monsters that had been trying to kill you moments prior. You also noticed doors behind the beast, and the only way to get to it was through that thing. You pulled out your pocket knife, pointing it at the monster with a shaky arm. “Y/N stop, we need to go,” your friend said, pulling on your arm.
“We don’t have a choice, this damn thing is blocking what could be our way out. Besides, we go back and we’ll have to fight off what’s waiting for us down those stairs. At least there’s only one monster up here,” you explained, taking a step forward.
The monster quickly rushed at you, letting out a loud cry. You pushed Advika out of the way, before quickly jumping to the side. You lunged forward and charged at the beast, plunging your knife right into its side. It shrieked, shaking before flinging you right into the wall. You fell onto the ground, holding your left arm. It might have been broken, you weren’t sure. You quickly realized you might have gotten too confident in yourself. Sure, you had managed to fend off some hillichurls and abyss mages, but this thing? You were just a kid. How did you think you could defeat this? You just hoped Advika was able to slip past the beast and make it to the door. You weakly got up as the beast walked your way, pointing your knife at it again. It charged at you once more, but this time when you struck it, it was the one blown back. You paused, confused. How did you manage to do that? Your question was soon answered when you saw the vision floating down to you. You immediately grabbed it. You couldn’t help but smile, “Oh thank the Archons,”.
You lunged at the monster once more, being able to swiftly defeat it with the help of your vision. You stood by its dead body, struggling to keep your breath. Advika ran over to you, enveloping you in a tight hug, “Oh my archons, Y/N, are you okay?”.
You shook your head, “I’ll be fine, you?”.
“I’m doing great, don’t worry about me. I’m more worried about that arm, how did you manage to kill that thing?” She asked.
You deadpanned, holding up your vision. “Oh, right,” she chuckled.
“Did you seriously not realize I got a vision?”.
“I wasn’t really looking for most of that, I kinda got scared. I’m sorry,” she apologized.
You shook your head, “it’s fine, that was a lot. I wish I didn’t see it too. Anyways, let’s go. This door might be our way out,”.
You woke up, out of breath. It was only a dream. You were safe. Kuni glanced up from his book, “You’re up, you okay?”.
“Yeah, just a..a bad dream. I guess. What happened?” You sat up, confused.
“We were about to leave when you passed out, that’s what happened,” he reminded, setting his book down on your coffee table.
You glanced up at the clock. It was 10:43.
Fuck.
“I was supposed to be at the Akademiya two hours ago,” you sighed, getting up to get your bag.
A hand caught your wrist. “Bad idea, you clearly need to get some rest. And you need to see a doctor. You’d be pretty stupid if you didn’t go to a doctor at this point, given your condition,” Kuni shook his head.
You sighed, he had a point. “Fine, I’ll go see Tighnari tomorrow morning. In the time being, do you think you could take a letter to the Akademiya for me? They need to know why I haven’t been able to come in,” you asked, getting a piece of paper and a pen from a drawer.
“Yeah, sure. Just get some rest,” he agreed, leaning back into the couch.
You quickly wrote up a letter and handed it to him, “Thank you, Kuni,”.
He shook his head, “Don’t thank me, just go to bed and sleep. I’ll be back,”.
You nodded, waving goodbye to him as he left your house. You then headed to your bedroom and laid down in your soft bed. You wondered why he seemed to care about you so much? You had only just met the other day. Maybe he was just being nice. Although given now much time you’ve spent together since yesterday morning, that didn’t seem to be the case. You shook your head, you could worry about that later. You should just try to get some sleep. You turn onto your side, pulling your blanket over you and shutting your eyes.

You groaned, kicking your blanket off. You couldn’t sleep, again. It was 7 am and you knew you should probably start getting ready about now. You got up and changed, and then headed to the kitchen. You had just gotten out some eggs to make a quick breakfast when you heard loud banging on your door.
Who the hell could be here so early in the morning?
You opened your front door, the man behind it being Kuni. “Oh it’s you,” you smiled, opening the door wider for him to enter.
He sighed, “Did you forget I was going to be coming over today?”.
“Sorta,” you chuckled, rubbing your eyes.
“What’re you making?” He sniffed, sitting on your couch.
“Just some eggs and toast, nothing special. Want some?”.
“If you don’t mind,”.
You nodded, returning to your kitchen. You scrambled some eggs with peppers, onions, and spinach. You then grilled two slices of bread and set the plates. You went back to the living room and handed him a plate. “Thanks,” he said, as he picked up his fork and took a bite.
“Now that I’ve made you breakfast, want to show me those drawings if Aranara I asked for?” You grinned, setting your plate down on your coffee table.
“Oh yeah,” he said, handing you the drawings, “I’m not really sure why you wanted these so bad, but here,”.
You looked at the drawings, dozens of colorful little Aranara covering the pages. “Aw, they’re so cute. It’s a shame I wasn’t able to see them when I was younger,” you chuckled.
“Yeah,” he responded.
You smiled, “Oh? You think they’re cute too, Kuni?”.
He turned his face the other way, “Shut up,”.
“You’re awfully dry this morning,” you sighed, “I haven’t gotten any sleep in days and I’m being more talkative,”.
“Is that really normal?” He asked.
You shrugged, “Not really, but I’m sure it’s fine. Anyways, you know only children can see Aranara right?”.
“Yeah, you mentioned that yesterday,” he sighed, crossing his arms.
“Maybe you being able to see them makes you a child at heart? Like, behind that cold exterior is just a child-like personality or something,” you teased, poking his shoulder.
“I highly doubt that, there’s nothing of the sort in here,” He laughed, putting a hand on his chest.
You giggled, “Sure,”.
You glanced at the clock, seeing the time. “I should probably get going soon, I’m supposed to be at the akademiya at 8:30,”.
He nodded, “I’ll walk you there,”.
“Alright, give me a second to get my things and I’ll meet you at the door,”.
You rushed to your room, putting some books in your bag and sliding some shoes on. You then headed back to Kuni, “Okay, we can get going n..now,”.
You stumbled a bit while walking to the door. He walked over to you and put a hand on your shoulder, “Should you really be going out right now?”.
You waved your hand, “No, no..don’t worry..I’ll be fine,”.
Your vision started getting hazy. Kuni’s conceded voice become muffled as you lost control of your body, feeling yourself fall to the floor as your vision went black.

The wanderer leaned against the railing, impatience slowly over taking him. What was taking you so long? This reminded him of your times in Inazuma. Even then you always had a problem with being on time.
The Balladeer kicked a pile of red leaves in annoyance. Then he noticed your figure approaching in the corner of his eye. “I’m so sorry for being late!” You apologized profusely.
The Balladeer clicked his tongue, “Honestly, I could stitch a clock into your skin and you would still be late,”.
You chuckled, “Yeah, you’re right. Anyways, where did you want to take me?”.
“I’m heading to Inazuma City, you’re coming with me,” he grabbed your wrist, dragging you through Ritou.
“But I can’t leave Ritou, remember? I’m an outlander,”.
“I’m a Fatui Harbinger, dumbass. If you’re accompanying me, they have no choice but to let you through,” the Balladeer sighed.
“Oh, right. Diplomats are allowed to leave Ritou,”.
“Yeah, and I’m sure you are tired of this island, you should be grateful I’m getting you out,” he shrugged.
You gave him a soft smile, “I am, thank you,”.
He was pulled out of the memory by you waving your hand in his face. “Heyy, Kuni, you there?” You asked, trying to keep yourself from laughing.
“Hush,” He pulled his hat down to cover his eyes, “Anyways, what took you so long? I’ve been waiting here for awhile,”.
“Oh yeah, sorry about that, I overslept,” you laughed, rubbing your neck.
“You overslept? You were awake this morning at 6 am,”.
You sighed, “I’ve been having a lot of trouble sleeping recently, I’m not really sure why. Finally my tiredness got the better of me and I passed out in my living room,”.
Scaramouche started walking, you following. “You should probably see someone about that, like a doctor or something. Passing out in random places probably isn’t the best thing for you,” He advised.
You were confused by his disdain when he said ‘doctor’, but said nothing about it. You chuckled, “We just met this morning, why do you care do much?”.
He shook his head, “I’m just saying. Honestly, I think seeing a doctor would be common sense in your case,”.
You nodded, “I guess you’re right,”.
You two walked to the Lokapala Jungle, occasionally stopping to admire the scenery. You two then soon stopped in-front of the jungle. “This the place?” He asked you.
“Yeah, damn it’s been years since I was last here,” you smiled, “Have you never been here before?”.
“Nope, I’m not from Sumeru, there’s still a lot here I haven’t seen,”.
You lightly began to push him along into the jungle, “Then let’s take a look around,”.
You two entered Lokapala Jungle, the grass glowing as you stepped on it. “What’s with the grass?” He asked, eyes glued on the ground.
You shrugged, “There’s really not much information on it, but people often speculate it’s related to the Aranara, I’m not sure though,”.
“Aranara?” He asked.
“They’re plant like forest spirits, they sort of look like cabbages. Only children can see them though, although I’ve heard of a few adults seeing them every now and then,” you explained.
“So that’s what those are,”.
“Have you seen them?” You asked, now very interested.
“A few times,” he admitted.
You stopped walking, “Really? You should sketch some of the ones you’ve seen for me, if you can remember. I’ve never really seen one myself,”.
“I suppose I can, but you’re gonna have to get me a pencil and paper,”.
“You really don’t have any yourself?” You asked.
He shook his head, “Of course not, what use would I have for them? I’m a wanderer, not a scholar or an artist,”.
You chuckled, “Fair enough, we can stop by my place on the way back and I’ll get you some,”.
You two spent the rest of the afternoon chatting in Lokapala Jungle, not even realizing how dark it was getting. It was weird, how easy it was to talk to the man you had just met. It felt like you had known him for years, and you had no clue why.

You glanced at your clock as the sun seeped through the blinds.
6:29 AM
Yet another sleepless night. You decided to try staying up late working so you would be more tired, but to no avail. You were beginning to think that you should talk to someone about it. You got up, changing into your clothes for the day. You quickly hooked your vision to your hip before heading to your kitchen to get breakfast. But unfortunately for you, you seemed to forgotten to get groceries. You decided to just get some breakfast from a restaurant near by. You put on your shoes and went out the door.
Once you entered the restaurant, your eyes landed on him. The man from yesterday. What were the chances that he’d be here? He looked up and noticed you staring again, but these time he smiled and gave a small wave. You quickly glanced away, before going to your seat and looking at the menu. You settled on ordering Pita Pockets. You gave the waiter your menu and took a sip of your water.
In the corner of your eye, you noticed the man making his way to your table. You assumed he was just heading for the door, until he sat directly infront of you. “You know, you’ve been having a hard time keeping your eyes off of me recently. Could I ask why?” He asked, a slight smirk on his face.
“Uh, it’s just that you seem so familiar. But I can’t figure out how I know you, have we met before?” You replied.
“Well, it’s possible we’ve meet. I’ve travelled across numerous nations, from Inazuma to Sumeru,” he answered, waving a confused waiter over.
He must have moved tables before telling the order responsible for his order.
“Hm, then yeah I guess that’s possible. I was in Inazuma for a time not too long ago,” you admitted.
Shortly before the Sakoku decree, you had taken a trip to Inazuma. Unfortunately for you, the decree and been implemented shortly after your arrival. This caused you to be stuck in the nation for a time. You only just got back half a year ago.
“So, do you have a name?” You asked.
The man paused for a moment, before answering, “Well, I’ve gone by many titles in the past. But none really matter anymore. I suppose you can call me Kuni,”.
“That’s a pretty name, it suits you,” you smiled.
“Is that you calling me pretty?”, he smirked, resting his face against his palm.
“I suppose so,” you shrugged.
He shook his head, “Well, now that I’ve introduced myself, I believe it’s only fair that you give me your name,”.
“It’s Y/N, sadly it’s really the only title I’ve ever had. Besides acting sage,”.
“Acting sage?”.
“Well once the Dendro Archon got rid of our old sages, she asked a few scholars to temporarily become sages until we found people who actually wanted the job. Which we since have found said people,” you explained, the waiter placing your order infront of you.
“Ah, so you’re a scholar,” he nodded.
“And what do you do for living?” You questioned, taking a bite into your Pita Pockets.
“Oh I’m just a wanderer, I’ve long forsaken any typical styles of life,” he answered, drinking some of his tea.
“So like an adventurer?”.
“Something like that, except I have no intentions on leaving Sumeru for the time being,”.
“And why’s that?”.
“You’re full of questions aren’t you,” Kuni shook his head, “Well since you’re so curious, I have some unfinished business here. I can’t leave before I get it resolved,”.
“That business is?”.
“I feel like I’m being interrogated right now,” he sighed.
You chuckled, “Sorry, sorry. Here, I’ll answer some questions from you to make things fair,”.
He paused for a moment, thinking of something to ask, “Your vision, how did you get it?”.
“When I was younger, my friend and I had wandered off too far. We eventually found ourselves in the Abyss. We probably would have died if I didn’t receive my vision at that moment. Thankfully we weren’t stuck there for long though, after about a day we had managed to get out,” you explained, fiddling with your vision.
“That story seems vaguely familiar to me,” he said.
“It does? Surely receiving your vision as a result of falling into the Abyss isn’t that common?” You asked.
“You’d be surprised,” he shrugged, “Anyways, I’m curious, were you involved in the whole false god thing led by the akademiya?”.
“No, similar to the Scribe and General Mahamatra, I was kept in the dark about the whole thing. But I did help the Scribe with his whole plan to stop it,”.
He seemed to be lost in thought for a moment, before pulling out some Mora, “Well, I can only assume we should both get going, here I’ll pay for you,”.
“You really don’t need to, I have plenty of Mora,” you sighed, a guilty expression on your face.
He chuckled, “No really, I can take care of it. It’s the least I could do for taking up your time,”.
You nodded, “Alright, thank you Kuni,”.
He handed the waiter the Mora, then you both exited the restaurant. “I’m planning on going for a walk to the Lokapala Jungle later, would you like to come with me? Unless of course, you’re too worried about going too far and falling into the Abyss again,” he offered.
You smiled, ignoring his comment about the Abyss, “I’d love to, that place really is beautiful. I don’t think I’ve been there in awhile,”.
“Alright, I’ll see you around,” he smiled, before waking around.
What a strange man
You decided to head back to your home, not feeling like stopping by the Akademiya today. You still felt like Kuni was eerily familiar. You just had a gut feeling that you two had met on multiple occasions in the past. Much to your dismay, actually meeting him seems to make this feeling even more intense.

Authors notes:
•Don’t you guys worry, he might seem nice right now, but he’s just trying to seem friendly. His real personality will become more present as the story progresses.
•this chapter isn’t proofread either😭
•Scara remembers you, but you can’t remember him. This really sucks for Scara doesn’t it 💀
