Q: Sora’s memory restoration was said to make him lose all memories of the events of Castle Oblivion, but does that mean he’s forgotten it forever, or does he remember it on some level? A: When Sora turned the Keyblade of Heart on himself and became a Heartless this had some unexpected consequences. By releasing his and Kairi’s hearts, the body he casted off was reborn as two special Nobodies —  Roxas and Naminé. While Naminé emerged as Kairi’s Nobody, the body and soul required to exist as a Nobody belonged to Sora. Essentially, her entire existence was only made possible due to Sora, and this is the primary reason that she has powers over his memories. When Roxas and Naminé returned to Sora and Kairi, many things were connected; due to this — and Sora’s role in Naminé’s existence — Sora’s memories of Naminé and Castle Oblivion returned to the surface. Soon after, he tells Riku that he wanted to thank Naminé, but that it didn’t feel right until everything was settled. When he sees her again in KH3D, he echoes these sentiments, saying he still has something he needs to tell her.

CHAIN OF MEMORIES GOOFY: But when we wake up, we won’t remember you anymore… DONALD: How are we going to thank you later? JIMINY: No problem, Donald! I’ll make a note in my journal: “Thank Naminé”

KINGDOM HEARTS II (2006) SAIX: Axel couldn’t stand living without a heart. And was destroyed by getting close to one. He was weak. XEMNAS: However — some things awaken through weakness.
DREAM DROP DISTANCE (2012) MICKEY: He made it! XEMNAS: You!

DREAM DROP DISTANCE JOSHUA: By ourselves, we’re no one. It’s when other people look at us and see someone — that’s the moment we each start to exist. All they needed was for someone to see them, connect with them.
DIZ: The heart has always been quick to grow. Each exposure to light, to the natural world, to other people, shapes this most malleable part inside of us. Nobodies are not different from us in that manner. … There are hearts around us everywhere we look. And it does not take superhuman powers to see them. Surely we remember as children the way our hearts made everything seem so shiny and perfect. Sora has a heart like that — uncorrupted, willing to see the good before the bad. When he sees the heart in something, it then becomes real. When a connection seems broken, he may have the power to mend it.

i really love the opening Days scene of Xion’s “induction” to the Organization
all of the Org members have these very reserved expressions of curiosity or skepticism or even boredom
except vexen
vexen’s just sitting there grinning like
"yesssss i mADE THE THING"

The Pain of Roxas
One thing about Kingdom Hearts 2 that never sat well with me was how you started the game off with Roxas, played through the tutorial, then after a short while of playing with him, you go back to controlling Sora and Roxas isn’t seen again until the very end of the game when you reach The World That Never Was. Well, so I thought.
When Roxas and Sora became one at the beginning of the game, it was not by choice. DiZ had lead him there to ensure Sora’s awakening and set his plan to destroy the Nobodies in motion. As Roxas stood in front of Sora he sighed in defeat and remorsefully told Sora how lucky he was. Why is Sora lucky? Because he can exist, no one denies him the right to, he can be his own person and live his own life, Roxas couldn’t, he was always meant to reunite with Sora but Roxas gained such a strong sense of individuality that it provided complications.
Tumblr media
After Sora meets the Twilight Town gang and starts to say his goodbyes before boarding the train to Yen Sid’s tower, a tear leaks out, seemingly from nowhere. This is the first sign that Roxas is not at rest inside Sora. At this point Sora has robbed Roxas of everything he’s ever loved, it’s because of Sora that he felt the need to leave the Organization to find out who he was, it’s because of Sora that Roxas had to kill his best friend Xion (though he doesn’t remember that), it’s because of Sora that Roxas was now unable to be friends with his other best friends Axel; Sora robbed Roxas of his old life, and now by leaving Twilight Town he was taking him away from the new life he had, even if it wasn’t real the feelings he had for those kids were.
It can safely be assumed that Roxas is inside of Sora for the entire length of KH2, unable to rest, actively watching the world through Sora’s eyes. When Sora, Donald, and Goofy reach the World That Never Was, Roxas had had enough, it was time to settle things for him. Even though Roxas couldn’t remember who he made the promise to he remembered that he made a very important promise to someone to take down Xemnas and free Kingdom Hearts, it was his sole purpose in life, and now Sora was waltzing in to take that from him.
The fight between Sora and Roxas (which I’m still pissed isn’t a boss fight) is for Roxas to test Sora’s worth, if Roxas can give Sora all he has, and Sora still bests him, that proves that Sora is better. It proves that Sora is his other half, that he is the stronger more suitable match to take down Xemnas and fulfill his promise. When Roxas says “You make a good other.” he means that if he had to sacrifice, his life, dreams, and will, Sora was a good person to do it for. Roxas had finally come to terms with Sora taking over. And later, before the final showdown with Xemnas, Roxas joined with Sora in heart as well as in body, giving him his strength.
Tumblr media
Now cut to Coded, this was all placed in the journal during the year that Namine was working on Sora’s memories, so the Roxas in this journal never went through this arc of development, he still bore all of this resentment towards Sora and held to his sense of will. Throughout this last level of the game Data Roxas tests Data Sora and tries to get him to abandon the lost memories of others, but no version of Sora is that kind of person, so he says he’s be willing to accept the hurt if it meant  staying connected to those he forgot. He would “accept it”, hurt isn’t something you can merely accept and be on your merry little way, so Roxas issued his final challenge to Sora to show him what real hurt was. To show him his pain so he could feel it himself.
Tumblr media
Much like this moment in DDD, where Roxas takes Sora’s hand and he is literally feeling all of the pain and heartache Roxas has been through. Moments after running into Xion, seeing her face, and having another of Roxas’ tears leak out. Data Naminé warned Data Sora and King Mickey that the pain of others inside his heart could very well break the heart of the real Sora.
The pain of Roxas alone was almost enough to break it. Roxas who lost everything, who was never supposed to have anything.

This is one of Demyx’s hit animations and yes, he is apparently taking the time to properly re-tune his sitar even when he’s in the middle of getting bludgeoned by an oversized key.
If I hadn’t come across this while playing around with a KH2 model viewer, I probably would never have realized this animation even existed - gotta admire whoever programmed it in while probably knowing full well that most players would be too busy with actually beating Demyx to notice it.
