Light and Shadows - A short film

This summer has been intense for me, but very special. One of the projects that I have finished is my first short film, and I want to share it with you.

I just want to thank my great crew (credits below) and everyone who voted at the screening for it to win the Best Audience Award.

Some people have asked me about the end and the title. Well, I was thinking of Plato and his Cave Analogy. In cinema, we also use light to cast shadows on a screen.

You probably saw it on Facebook, or attended the Book Presentation, but if you didn´t know…

I´m happy to announce that  the first book of the series Archivos de Pireia, ¿Quién es Shara Marst?  is finally published!

The dead woman is found in a tunnel near the cliff of the city of Pireia. She has a bullet in her stomach, she is wearing a necklace made of precious stones and carrying a lot of money. Inspector Lowe has just been transferred to Pireia and he doesn´t know yet what´s waiting for him. Among the many suspects, the owner of the most popular local bar seems to hide something. The elegant business woman knows more than she tells. Who is Shara Marst? is the first part of a mystery book series called Archivos de Pireia.

This Pact was the beginning of the second era of civilization. For a special consideration, they will receive food and supplies they are unable to produce underground. Although shaky at times, four hundred and fifty years later, the Pact is still observed. Then everything begins to change when Vogel, one of the fifty-two apprentices beginning his period of instruction in Civis, realizes that something isn’t right as he dreams of things that normal Civis citizens shouldn’t know. Soon he and his trainer, Lerdre, escape the confines of Civis and flee for Silva. Once there they find that their adventure is only starting…

I have always been fond of post apocalyptic stories, interested in the way a particular author determines how the world would be. In this case, I was surprised with a completely new take on an old story line. I appreciated the way the author gave every other chapter from the point of view of the main characters, Vogel and Lerdre. The plot was strong with good organization, leaving the reader eagerly waiting to see what would happen next. The dialogue was realistic, and the descriptions were colorful. Overall, this was a well written, well developed story that I highly recommend to sci-fi lovers everywhere. Well done.

I am really proud and happy to see my work in English, and for that I have to thank the great translator Miriam C. Delgado and the Babelcube initiative.

30 DAYS: Already in four languages and 4 stars!

In a previous post I announced the English version of 30 days. Now I am happy to announce that 30 GIORNI is available in italian!

You can already get the ebook from iTunes or Barnes & Noble, and it will be soon available in ebook and paperback in Amazon and more online stores!

Also, the Norwegian version is finished and will be published very soon. That will make 4 languages, with the original Spanish version. I am amazed and thankful to the Babelcube Initiative and to my great translators Rachel Hopkinson, Elisabetta Pinzarrone, and Catherine and Cecilie Jacobsen for making it possible!  Read more about Babelcube here.

Earlier in December, 30 days received a great review in onlinebookclub.org! 4 out of 4 stars!

This book blew me away! The story is told in reverse, which is something I’ve never seen before in a book, but I loved it. The format reminded me a bit of a Columbo mystery where you see the crime committed and then follow the detective as he unravels the motive.

I found this book to be very enjoyable and hard to put down even though the subject matter was not happy. The writing style just draws you in and the unique format kept me wanting to read the next page. The exploration of 30 days out of a man’s life was truly inspired. This work was also beautifully translated from the original in Spanish. I understand that this author has other books in Spanish and I hope that they will also be translated because I would love to read more of her work.

I’m giving this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was a great read and I highly recommend it.

How to translate your books into another language?

The answer is Babelcube, Inc. I wrote before about this initiative, as you can see here, but now I can talk about my experience with it. It has a good and interactive website, where you can offer your books and find the perfect translator for it.

Right now, three of my books are being offered in this website, and I found translators into different languages: English, Italian and Norwegian! I am really excited about all these projects and I will certainly tell you more when the translation is complete!

But for now, my first translated book has just been published! 30 días is now available in English with the title 30 days, thanks to the great translator Rachel Christina Hopkinson. 

It is now available in Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble, Apple iTunes, Kobo, Scribd, Page Foundry as an ebook!

Making an ANIMATED book trailer

The fact is that I like book trailers. But why? Well, I think that making a book trailer is like making a movie trailer, but harder.  A lot HARDER.

In the movies you have the recorded scenes already, that you can cut and edit, in order to make a summary of the story. But when it comes to a book trailer you don’t have anything BUT THE STORY.

That means you have to create the scenes. But how to do that? I already wrote a post about making a book trailer, that you can read here, so I won’t go into details now. Here I will talk about how to make an ANIMATION TRAILER.

And why animation? Since the book belongs to the theatre genre (a comedy play), all the scenes are full of dialogues and not action. That makes it harder to make an interesting and attractive book trailer, but It makes it easier when it comes to cartoon: I had the dialogue for my characters.

The next step was to record the voices: dubbing. In this aspect I was lucky, because we had just presented the book with a dramatic reading (you can see more about the event here), and I had the videos, which were not really good. However the audio was good and perfect for the cartoon!

So next step: making the cartoon. I just wanted something simple so I made some characters with Adobe Illustrator:

(Make sure to make the characters in layers so you can actually make them move!)

Then, I animated them with After effects:

And final step: editing the book trailer!!!

  I thought it was an original way to present our new book. I hope you enjoy the animation as much as I enjoyed making it!

What the Beat Generation was to literature

“What Elvis was to music, what James Dean and Marlon Brando were to film… the Beat Generation was to literature.”

During this summer holidays I had the chance to spend some days in San Francisco. Walking around, I found The Beat Museum, dedicated to the Beat Generation, and I thought It deserved a post.

The Museum is a small place near Chinatown, located in front of the editing house that dared to publish The Howl, next to an alley full of quotes by the Beatniks.

Through an attractive library full of books organized in shelves, tables and even bath tubes, you can find the entrance to the BEAT MUSEUM.

Inside the museum, you will be able to see things like the original screenplay of “On the Road”, learn more about the obscenity trial of the famous poem “The Howl” or about the Beat writers’ life, and feel the magic of their literature.

After this session of literature history, I decided to start reading the book On the Road by Jack Kerouac, ranked among the best 100 english-language novels of the 20th century, that recently became a film.

Jack Kerouac introduced the phrase “Beat Generation” in 1948 to characterize a perceived underground, anti-conformist youth movement in New York. Allen Ginsberg‘s Howl (1956), William S. Burroughs‘s Naked Lunch (1959) and Jack Kerouac‘s On the Road (1957) are among the best known examples of Beat literature. Both Howl and Naked Lunch were the focus of obscenity trials that ultimately helped to liberalize publishing in the United States.The members of the Beat Generation developed a reputation as new bohemian hedonists, who celebrated non-conformity and spontaneous creativity.

What I learned from NaNoWrimo Camp

NaNoWriMo Camp is over!

I published last month a post about the NANOWRIMO INITIATIVE titled Have you heard of NaNoWriMo ? that you can read here!

As promised, I set a goal: 20.000 words. With an undecided title and nice fellow writers in my cabin, I started writing. After 31 days, much excitement and hard work, I reached my goal but I discovered I wasn’t even close to finish the story. I am half way through it! So I will keep writing it and tell you when is ready

So this is what I learned at NaNoWriMo Camp:

-GOAL: Having a goal makes it easier. Quantity is not as important as quality, but it helps you calculate your improvements and encourages you to keep going.

-DEADLINE: Having a deadline may seem harder, but it is actually a boost. Working under stress improves productivity!

-JUST WRITE, DO NOT EDIT: Writing first, editing later. That is the MOST important thing that you learn from NaNoWriMo. Stop your inner editor, they will repeat each time. And it’s good advice. You won’t lose time editing. Afterwards, when you have a COMPLETE first draft, THEN you can edit your novel.

After reaching your goal before the deadline (a month), they will sent you a congrats email, an electronic certificate and the access to the winner goodies (free stuff and discounts).

In short, NaNoWriMo Camp is a great oportunity to GIVE YOUR NOVEL A PUSH while having fun and It is a training session for the actual NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), that will be held in November!

Presentation of the book + dramatic reading

This week has been really busy for me but It was worth it!

¡The play “Paella y Fish and Chips” has just been published!

  Description of the book: Category: Humour Description: Meet the typical spanish family!

  Marisiña and Vicente make an effort to send her daughter Esperanza to London hoping she will have a better future.

This is a play full of crazy scenes that will make you laugh out loud. For now, only the spanish edition is available. Authors: Inés Galiano y Cristina Nicolás

Writing a play has been not only a challenge but also an adventure. I am really happy about the outcome. It has been great to carry this project out as a co-author with Cristina. (Sharing work is good sometimes.)

How to make a book trailer

So I was looking at some marketing posts and I decided I was going to make a book trailer. However, I didnt want it to look homemade, but to look more professional without buying an expensive book trailer pack from some company.  Now I want to share my experience with you, I hope you find it useful!

1. First, I needed some friends. That’s a fact. It is really hard to be the lonely wolf. They will give you ideas or they will help you to make it. It will look much better.  (I need to say thanks you to my friend Cristina Nicolás for helping me with this).

2. An original idea. I doesn’t have to be really complicated, just original. The truth is there may be thousands of traditional book trailers that look the same. You want yours to be different, to stand out.

3. Don’t write too much. You want your trailer to be easy to watch. If you write big paragraphs about the book, even if it is a great quote, people won’t read it.

4. Find a good song. Your music must be catchy and attractive. It is not that difficult to find one like that. You can find music creative commons in sites like the ones in this list. 

Those ideas were in our mind before making it and this is what we finally made: We decided to make the characters from the book actually live, recording some scenes (getting up at 7 am on holidays to record has a reward). A voice over instead of writing about the book. And a final 3D animation for the book that brings the professional look.
