Deep and intimate share: I walked into my mostly-white very-privileged all girls school a confident 12 year old that knew her stuff. I discovered that folks are VERY uncomfortable with women who are direct, honest and unabashed. And even less comfortable with black girls with questions. I subsided into silence. I watched my classmates withdraw their real selves. I fought back. I created dance parties and begged for chaperones. I wrote poems and essays about leaves and sent them to the entire high school listserv. Creativity was my sword. But I still had battle scars. Today I am releasing this one: Im taking “just” in the context of “only” out of my lexicon. I find myself (all girls school holdover?) saying “just checking in” “just trying to get like you” “just wanted to see how you’re doing” and its only role is to soften my words. The only “just” I will proliferate is the just that keeps people safe. Love you all. Also, check my IG story for a poem I wrote about the destructive all-girls perfection culture.
