The thing about Cottagecore is that is a fetishized aesthetic of country life, divorced from labor and idealized by a primarily urban audience with a backward looking ethos of tradition. They are not prepared for the stresses of a rural life: farming; harvesting; tapping pumpkins to ensure none of them have been replaced with flesh; losing out on income by having to use one of your pigs in a blood sacrifice to paint protective sigils over your doors and windows; checking cracks and chimneys for the flesh-vines of the Pumpkin Lord; having to decide, before the Growth is complete, whether that's really your tradwife or an amassment of vines, leaves, and blood in the shape of your tradwife; ignoring their desperate pleas that "I'm me! No! No!" as you burn them alive, realizing too late you picked wrong; and the exploitative corporate nature of commercial farming in 2024. All seen through a deeply colonial lens, of course

NaNo 2023 Day 2
Masterlist.
Word Count: 3886
Favorite Snippet:
“That’s ridiculous,” she seethed, glaring at him and the invoice both.  “It was just some minor hull damage—” The repairman snorted.  “The prices for kattar plating have gone up since the Devarian civil war—” “Devar is a goddamn thousand parsecs away, you price-gouging weasel—” “Whoa there,” Canp inserted himself into the conversation, grabbing the hand she had clenched around her stun baton and giving the skeevy repairman a Look.  “How about we all take a deep breath?” “How about I jab this baton up his ass?” Taz muttered, not quite under her breath.
Musings:
Well, the story went completely off the rails, as it's wont to do early on in NaNo, and we took a side detour into a completely different plot before returning to Taz after realizing that making up galactic politics or a galactic magic system as I go along was not going to work out. Shelving both those ideas, I am now planning a straightforward sci-fi story plot about finding a mythical power source that everyone is hunting for. We'll give it a couple of days before I switch the summary over.

NaNo 2023 Day 1
Masterlist.
Word Count: 2624
Favorite Snippet:
Taz elbowed Canp.  “What?” he snarled harshly under the crashes and screams. “Trash chute,” she pointed to where the other two were escaping. Canp groaned. “I’ll remind you that it was your idea to meet,” Taz said tersely. “Shit like this is why everyone says Esva are cursed,” Canp grumbled, but edged towards the chute.  “Go, I’ll cover you.” “We aren’t cursed,” Taz muttered.  They just had a special gift for finding trouble.
Musings:
I feel like I'm starting to get a handle on Taz's voice, which is good, but a stray thought struck me about the Esva. I could make them more magicky and interfering, and have Taz be escaping them, which would tie in neatly into why she would go to Devar in the first place. It means that the direction of the story will change entirely, but it's a first draft, that's what happens.
And it means I can make the story more politicky, which I do want...
I'm going to sleep on it and see.

NaNoWriMo 2023
Title: The Bone King's Sword
Genre: Fantasy
Summary:
Lucy Quinn is happy as an amateur cursebreaker, happy to leave behind her checkered past as a thief.  But when an old friend comes calling for help, she might have to dust off those burglary credentials. The sword of legendary necromancer king Stanisfer is tucked away in the Archives of Maiva.  A dangerous weapon, it has the ability to plunge the Empire back into death and chaos as power-hungry rulers raise the dead for their own gain.  The only path to safety is its utter destruction. But to destroy it, Lucy first has to steal it.  The Archives are a closed, secure fortification, guarded by zealots.  The last time Lucy was there, she and her crew barely managed to escape alive, and her crew dissolved soon after.  She can’t do it alone.  But getting the crew back together means confronting old betrayals as allies and enemies switch faces under the shadow of death.
Featuring:
Vaguely Roman Empire esque magical kingdom
Five-man band that takes a solid two-thirds of the story to get together
Betrayal!
Heists!!
Magical trains!!!
(far too many fight scenes on magical trains 😭)
Updates:
11/1/2023: (2231) we have unlocked a new character, Mystery Devarian who skulked in the bar Taz is at and overheard her new job and is determined to interfere...
11/2/2023: (3886) the story has lost its plot. I mean that literally. we are now trying out a new plot to see if it fits.
11/12/2023: (6299) welp, I threw in the towel on the sci-fi story and went back to the novel I was working on before NaNo seized me with a new idea!
Current Word Count: 6299
Current Status: hit the good old 'switch NaNo projects halfway into November'

Treat or Treat!
"So, what's the job that's so difficult even the Syndicate can't find someone to fill it," Taz asked, one hand protectively cupping her glass of Terran springwater. Canp's eyes had raised at her choice of beverage, but after seeing the prices, he looked like he wished she'd gotten alcohol instead. "And why the hell do you think I'd be stupid enough to take it?"
"It's not difficult so much as...complicated," Canp's mouth twisted, though that could've been the Izhok moonshine he'd just swigged. "Let's just say the Syndicate has a conflict of interest in this particular case."
Taz stared. "A conflict of interest," she repeated.
"It's a simple contract, really. Courier service. Pick-up and drop-off are in the same system too. Small, non-sentient package, not fragile, no need for climate or temperate control."
Taz continued to give him a flat stare.
Canp sighed. "And if you accept the contract, Mairi has agreed to accept your neutrality."
Taz sucked in a sharp breath. Canp was watching her carefully and she took a sip of the clear springwater as she contemplated her response.
Getting Mairi off her back was a huge deal. It meant she could operate in Syndicate territory as a free agent, instead of being confined to jobs in dangerous or isolated extriside sectors. But Taz had been trained to listen to her instincts, and they were all warning her of danger.
"Where's the contract?"
Canp looked like he really wished she hadn't asked that question.
"Devar."

Trick or treat!
Taz turned around, spotted the bounty hunter staring straight at her, and spun around again.
"Nope," she said to herself, dodging past the stall she'd been waiting at and deeper into the market. "Nope, nope, nope." The undercity was dark and dimly lit and Taz ducked into an alley in the hopes of losing her pursuer.
When no one followed her in, she exhaled. She stepped back out--and nearly shrieked when Levitt Canp appeared from the gloom with a wry expression.
"Taz," he started solicitously.
"No," she said vehemently, glaring at him.
"You haven't even heard my offer," Canp said, injured.
"I'm not joining the Syndicate," Taz said. "And if Tesara Mairi can't take no for an answer, I'm going to have to find a way to punctuate my refusal."
She eyed Canp's armor pointedly. Canp took the hint and stepped back.
"Look, this isn't about signing up, I swear," Canp held out his empty hands. "It's a job."
"I don't care how you dress it up, I am not working for--"
"It's a job the Syndicate can't do," Canp blurted out, before glancing around at their surroundings. No one met their eyes, as expected in Caster's undercity, but that didn't mean half a dozen people weren't listening. "Can we talk about this somewhere quieter? It's not a recruitment pitch, I swear."
Taz glanced around them again and scowled at Canp. Like it or not, there were very few places in Caster that the Syndicate couldn't track her down, and with her ship still docked for repairs, it left her a sitting duck. Better to go along with whatever they wanted until she could clear the system.
"Fine," Taz said, stalking to the closest bar. "But you're paying."

Trick or treat! 🎃👻🦇
In the spirit of Halloween, and the day after, a brief summary to my NaNo project:
The problem with owing people favors, Taz Esvaki has realized, is that they should really come with limitations. Smuggling a package into the war-torn system of Devar involved some smooth-talking to join an IGC diplomatic mission to get permission to enter the system, only now Taz has to actually keep up the pretense of being a diplomat's aide. A hard enough job, given the complexities of inter-galactic politics, but especially so in Devar, recently recovering from a decades-long civil war and with a population that has a tendency to shoot first and ask questions later. Especially when Taz finds herself drawn into political intrigue fermenting underneath the peace conference with a new, anonymous contract luring her in...

Event Info & Rules
~ Please read our extensive event info posts before sending us an ask - A link can be found at the top of this post. ~
WHUMPTOBER is a month-long, prompt-based creation challenge (think: Inktober, but whumpier). There are 31 official themes this year - one for each day of the month - which can be used, skipped, or combined in any way you’d like. The 'theme' of each day is the line of lyrics.
The prompts are merely to serve as inspiration without being taken literally (e.g. you don’t have to include the exact wording of prompts into your work). Feel free to run rampant on interpretation. For example, if the prompt is "flame", you could create something with reference to a candle/campfire, your character could have suffered a burn, or the flame could be related to the 'spark' of a relationship. It's truly up to you!
In total, there are 4 prompts for each day: there's lyrics, an object, a trope and a line of dialogue to choose from.  We want to give everyone as much creative freedom as possible, as well as increase event accessibility for folks with triggers and squicks.
Creators can PRODUCE work in any media they choose, including but not limited to: writing, visual artwork, photo/video/audio edits, paper crafts and elaborate recommendation lists (not just a list of links). Creators can PARTICIPATE as much or as little as they want (i.e. you don’t have to do ALL the prompts if you don’t want to) and prompts can be used in any order. They are also free to use even after the event ends.
When uploading Whumptober content to your blog, be sure to tag the with:
#whumptober2023 …..(the event tag)
#no.1, #no.2, #no.3, …..(day number)
#lyric, #bruises, #stabbing,  …..(the theme or specific prompt you chose)
#fandom or #OC, … (ironman, originalcontent, oc …)
#medium …..(gifs, fic, podcast, art, etc.)
#teeth, #gore tw, #etc …..(trigger warnings & any additional tags. Add "tw" AFTER the trigger/content warning. )
#nsfwhump …..(only for nsfw content)
#your own tags go here
PLEASE BE DILIGENT WITH YOUR TAGGING. Only properly tagged posts are considered for archiving on the official @whumptober-archive blog. They must be tagged in the order above. An elaborate post about our tagging system can be found [here]
Unfortunately, due to the sheer number of participants in recent years, we cannot guarantee your work will be archived. A random selection of properly tagged posts from all genres will be reblogged each day.
Whumpers who produce content for 31 total theme days are considered event completionists and will be tagged in a masterpost at the end of the month. A form will be published at the beginning of November asking you to tell us if you completed the event. You do not need to post anything you have created, we rely on trust and we will not check this.
Questions not addressed in one of our many event info posts can be directed to this blog. We will not answer any questions that have been answered in the FAQs or rules already.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How does this year’s prompt list work? What do I have to choose?
You can create something based on:
The overall theme/lyric of the day
Prompt 1, 2 or 3
One or several of the alternative prompts
A combination of the above
Q. Is [specific anything] allowed?
When in doubt: JUST DO IT!
Q. Do I have to do all 31 days?
Participate as much or little as you like! Just be sure to tag your posts properly (ex. #no.7, #radio silence). If you create works for 31 total theme days you will become a completionist. But apart from that, there are no repercussions if you don’t fill prompts for each day.
Q. Can I post early/late?
Yes, you can post whenever you want. We will only reblog posts during October, but you can use our prompts all year round. The day you post will only affect your probability of being reblogged.
Q. Will you reblog my post?
Due to the sheer number of content posted during Whumptober we can’t promise to reblog every single post. We will make a random selection trying to capture a wide variety of content. The following will increase your chances at being reblogged:
tag your post properly
post within 2-3 days of the theme you want to fill: if you fill the prompt for Day 1 your chances of being reblogged during October 1st to 3rd are highest and will go towards zero afterwards.
Q. What if I don’t understand a prompt/theme?
Send us an ask! We’re happy to help with wild, unhelpful clarifications or brainstorming. That being said, the themes are entirely up for interpretation. Don’t take them too literally. For example: You can be choking on a cherry, someone else can choke you or you could be choked up on emotions, etc.
Q. What kind of content can I make? Can it be NSFW?
This is a MIXED MEDIA event! You can write fic, post meta, doodle or paint, create a gifset or photo edit, link a song, or get crafty with video - anything goes. As for NSFW, make what you like, we just hope that you’ll tag your work accordingly so that others participating in the event can stay safe.
Q. Can I combine Whumptober with other creation challenges?
Absolutely, as long as the other challenges allow it too.
Q. Can I upload/repost my Whumptober content to other social media platforms?
Of course! You can post your own content wherever you like (or you can opt to not publish it at all). Additionally we’ve created an AO3 Collection to archive any fics posted there. It can be accessed here. The tumblr blog @whumptober-archive is the official archive, so please respect the boundaries of any closeted whumpers in your social circle.
Q. Can I use prompts to write a new chapter for an existing fic?
Yes.
Q. An existing fic I am currently writing contains many of the Whumptober prompts, can I use it?
If you are actively writing this fic at the moment with the Whumptober prompts in mind, yes. If you’ve previously posted something that checks the boxes, we ask that you not include it retroactively for this current year. You can, however, add new chapters relating to one or more of the prompts.
Q. What kind of characters can I write for?
Fandom characters, OC characters, human, furry, alien, cyborg, RPF, whoever you like. You can use the generic “whumpee” character or have specific ones.
Q. Does it have to take place in a specific fandom?
No, you can create works for your own worlds or for fandoms or for both. You can also create more generic or pan-fandom works. You can do cross-overs or use OCs, whatever you want.
Q. Can I use a prompt multiple times?
Yes, but it only counts once towards being a completionist.
Q. If I’m not comfortable with one day’s prompts can I use a prompt of a different day as a substitute and still be a completionist?
No, you can’t exchange prompts for different days. However, if all four prompts of a specific day make you uncomfortable, we have created an alternate prompts list that you can draw from. You can exchange any prompt with these, but please make sure not to use them twice.
Q. Where can I post my work?
Post where and how you want. You don’t have to (cross)post it to Tumblr or at all. Just keep in mind if it’s not on Tumblr we will not be able to add it to the blog archive.
Q. Can I start posting early?
You can, but this is an October event and wouldn’t it be more fun with everyone doing it at the same time? That being said, you can post early, but we won’t be reblogging any work predating October 1st.
Q. Do I have to finish a fic I started/can I post WIP’s?
Yes you can post WIPs. And you’re not obligated to finish it in October for it to count towards being a completionist.
Q. Is co-writing allowed?
Yes, absolutely, and it would count towards being a completionist for both/all of you.
Q. Do I have to create 31 standalone pieces to be considered a completionist or can I write one continuous story?
One continuous story is fine.  The challenge is to write something for 31 prompts. If that’s spread over 31 fics or just one, you are still considered a completionist. (The same goes for every other media you choose.)
Q. Is there a min/max limit on word count?
There is no limit.
Q. Can I combine prompts? Is there a limit on how many?
No limit and combine as many as you’d like.
Q. Is a hc/angst/emotional whump focus ok?
Of course! We are not going to establish a threshold for whumpiness. If you think it’s whumpy enough, then it’s whumpy enough. It can be physical, psychological, emotional, or any combination of the three.
Q. What’s considered nsfw?
See this post
Q. What is whump?
Typically the genre includes situations where a fictional character is hurt, be it emotionally, psychologically, or physically. Fanlore provides information here.
Q. My interpretation of the prompt isn’t whumpy at all, does that count?
If you don’t think your interpretation is whumpy, then it doesn’t count for Whumptober. Remember that whump comes in many forms, though, and that we don’t have a whump-checker or a threshold for how much whump needs to be included. If you think your interpretation contains enough whump to count, then it does.
Q. Can I start working on the prompts before October?
Absolutely! That’s why we post the prompts a month in advance. We recognise how difficult it can be creating for 31 days in “real time” so feel free to start creating early!
Q. How do I tag triggers?
tw at the end of the word, ex. #gore tw
Q. Do I have to use your tags?
Yes, if you want your work archived on the blog. If not, feel free to use whatever tags you want.
Q. Does combining prompts count towards completion?
Yes
Q. Can we @ you?
Yes but we mostly rely on the #whumptober2023 tag.
Q. Is there anything we are absolutely not allowed to write?
There are no rules, but please make sure to properly tag your trigger warnings. And keep in mind Tumblr’s policies if you are posting it here (or the policies for whatever site you use).
Q. Where can I go for brainstorming help?
Here on Discord or come into our ask box.
Q. My characters are minors, is that ok?
Yes, but as with everything else, use clear and descriptive tags.
Q. Can I cross post on other blogs?
Yes, multiple platforms and blogs are perfectly acceptable. You can also post different works to different accounts under different names, without posting them everywhere at once.
Note: This is a creation challenge, please don’t repost your old work under our tags (unless it’s been changed or edited for the event).
Thanks for reading, and happy whumping!

Show don't tell, write around the pain, yes, yes, but also don't forget the impact of a simple, well-placed, direct statement.
It hurt.
One of the best tips for writing descriptions of pain is actually a snippet I remember from a story where a character is given a host of colored pencils and asked to draw an egg.
The character says that there’s no white pencil.  But you don’t need a white pencil to draw a white egg.  We already know the egg is white.  What we need to draw is the luminance of the yellow lamp and the reflection of the blue cloth and the shadows and the shading.
We know a broken bone hurts.  We know a knife wound hurts.  We know grief hurts.  Show us what else it does.
You don’t need to describe the character in pain.  You need to describe how the pain affects the character - how they’re unable to move, how they’re sweating, how they’re cold, how their muscles ache and their fingers tremble and their eyes prickle.
Draw around the egg.  Write around the pain.  And we will all be able to see the finished product.

There is something about wading into the ocean, step by treacherous step, wincing as you step on pointy seashells and protruding rocks, tugged by the grip of something that surely cannot be mere water, a siren song pulling you down.
And getting deeper in, getting slapped in the face by a wave over and over and over again, until you don't bother to clear the seawater off your face even if it stings, because you are beginning to comprehend the futility of fighting the ocean.
And relaxing out there, rocked by small waves, staring up at the sky and knowing that you exist between the air and the water and nothing else. And then getting dunked by a bigger wave, because the ocean makes sure you never get too comfortable.
And then deciding to get back to shore--except the ocean doesn't want you to leave. The ocean never wants you to leave, it's the most jealous lover you will ever have, you fight and kick and claw your way out, swimming and crawling and falling every time you try to stand. It holds onto you with all your strength and just when you think you've escaped its pull, it tries again. And again. And again.
And you finally make it back. Land sweet land. You are bruised and scraped and you stink of salt and there is sand in unmentionable places and gravity reasserts itself with dominance and you have never felt more alive.
You have won the fight that we have been fighting ever since the first fish crawled its way out of the sea, the most ancient of all the legacies you bear.
If that isn't catharsis, I don't know what is.
forget about touching grass, i need to touch THE SEA I NEED TO GO INTO THE WATER I NEED TO DIVE INTO THE SEA!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok hi!! i hope you're having a good day!☀️ so i just saw your post about writing a character in pain and you reference a story where the character is told to draw an egg but not to use a white colored pencil and i! think about this scene! all the time! like that specific scene has stuck in my head for years now. but i can't remember what book it's from!! do you know the title or author or character names or literally anything about it lol i genuinely don't even remember if the book is good but that specific scene rewired my brain, and i have not been able to hunt it down again bc i read it like 15 years ago or something. anyways, if you don't know no worries! thanks!! 🌱
It's All American Girl by Meg Cabot, as numerous replies and reblogs have pointed out because apparently we all remember a very specific scene in a middlingly popular YA novel from 2002.

(CWB anon again) Basically they asked if a POC with a lighter skintone could be described as having a blush of pink on their skin after trying to wash off blood. (I think that was the descriptor) And wanted to know if that was accurate or if it would look different on slightly darker skin.
Tumblr media
Yes. You can still get pink, swollen skin or pink/red rashes on darker skin tones, whether from an allergic reaction, hot water/burns, or friction. That quote would work.

I like putting characters into Situations. Sometimes they're women. Sometimes they're men. Sometimes they're young. Sometimes they're old. Sometimes they're X or Y or Z or a bajillion different labels. The common point is the pain. That's what whump is.
If you dislike a specific subgenre of whump, you're perfectly valid. Everyone's tastes are not the same. Find the people that share your tastes and start your own sub-community. You don't need to put other people down to enjoy the things you like.
"Lady Whump" and Censorship.
This was originally a reply to @straight-to-the-pain's lovely post, but I felt like what I wanted to say should be its own thing.
As a disclaimer, I want to say that triggers surrounding lady whump are understandable and valid. You are not being demonized for being uncomfortable with a topic or having trauma surrounding it. However, that does not excuse the demonization and harassment of those who write it or choose not to tag it.
-----------------------------
The best example for whump being exposed to purity culture (as mentioned here) is the lady whump dilemma, and it's upsetting that people are afraid to address it or just don't see it happening.
I've seen people imply/outright state that because "women get abused more" means that lady whump is shady and "immoral" to write.
Not only does that completely invalidate men going through abuse but it's also a complete and utter bullshit reason to discourage freedom of creativity.
This is the whump community. We write about abusive relationships, noncon, violence and torture. Just because it isn't a male character does not mean any of this changes.
Saying that the gender of a character makes any of these acts "more severe" implies that if it happens to a male irl, it's less of a big deal.
This is untrue, and harmful.
If a man suffers from any of the aforementioned acts, they should be taken just as seriously as a woman. Men can be abused, sexually assaulted, and harmed just as much as a woman can. This is not news.
It's like we're taking steps BACK in equality via censorship and it's absolutely ridiculous.
Implying that a woman cannot go through the above experiences is also incredibly disrespectful to victims who have suffered from abuse. Implying that they cannot write about it is censorship.
People write to cope.
The fact people genuinely go after writers for not putting a warning about pronouns and for not promoting the "male only" whump stereotype is unacceptable.
You create your online experience. If you don't enjoy a certain trope, don't read it. I completely understand that tagging content helps potential readers avoid triggering content but when it comes down to the character's pronouns, I believe that if it impacts someone that much simply being in the whump community itself is harmful. Characters have different genders. It is inevitable. That being said, there is nothing wrong with asking someone to tag content, just be prepared if they say no. Do not harass someone for not tagging something specific to you.
Just block them, or walk away.
It also grosses me out that people genuinely think that women only belong in a caretaker/supportive role instead of the main character. This enforces negative stereotypes of female characters.
This isn't the 50's anymore. Women have left the kitchen.
I'm sorry my character that goes through a rough experience just so happens to be female or uses she/her pronouns. Go touch grass.
Another thing that irks me is the promotion of people saying that they like male whump because they're attracted to men, but when it's the other way around somehow it's disgusting.
It's kind of homophobic to go after a saphic writer and preach that them writing lady whump isn't ok while also accepting someone writing male whump because they're attracted to men.
Double standards are harmful. Women can be attracted to women.
To quote an unnamed anon, "They clearly have a 'normalize misogyny and everyone should get off to the pain of women' agenda."
As if that isn't the case with male whumpees.
People here celebrate men being beaten up, bloodied and bruised. Yet somehow, when the tables are turned, everyone clutches their pearls as if a sin against nature has been committed-- claiming that men deserve to be objectified.
Not only is that a horrifically toxic response but it also puts lady whump writers in an extremely difficult spot when defending their work.
Honestly, the entire concept of lady whump being a separate community is disturbing in and of itself. We are not bad people just because we have female characters. We are not misogynists. We are not fetishists.
We simply write a gender that isn't male.
This community is definitely not as welcoming towards people with female characters, no matter what anyone here says about how "kind" and "friendly" this part of tumblr is. People are afraid to introduce their female characters due to the risk of harassment.
That's not okay.
This is supposed to be a community for enjoying torturing characters, regardless of how they identify.
The quality of whump should not be determined by the character's gender.
The fact that this is even a debate or source of drama is honestly sad.

Hey I saw you answer a lot of whump questions and this blog I follow @cutwhipburn asked one I don't know how to answer. Do you know?
I can certainly try to answer it! What's the question?

FFN is working just fine. Some of the comments say the green leaf page might be a DNS spoofing thing (fanfiction.net vs www.fanfiction.net), but if you type in www.fanfiction.net, it should work. I can access both the main page and multiple fics and it doesn't look like it's disappearing any time soon.
Looks like fanfiction.net is gone. Probably should have backed up the fic I had there. Woops. Too late now.
