this episode.... Matt said evil Essek theories are wack are boy is just neurodivergent and does not know how to handle social situation; here let him overshare with you over dinner and wine and sit in a hottub and overshare some more and we just... went with it. The Good Essek content. I wont even TALK about the shadowgast we got because "I have seen those far older than you that have experienced maybe half the pain I’ve seen in your eye" I.... have not processed it yet. Not sure if i ever will.

god i KNOW THIS EP WAS SO MUCH

this ep was so much of essek just summoning All his courage to ask these people— who actually seem to like him? to like him, and not use him, imagine that— for things, for anything in return for what he’s done for them.

and after all that buildup, what he asks them for is FRIENDSHIP. he waits until he thinks they owe him to the point that they shouldn’t refuse even if they don’t like him— they can’t, right, not really? they didn’t call when they found someone new, when they didn’t need him anymore— and he asks if he can come in for dinner. he asks if they’ll help him with research— help him, like a friend would do, like anyone in the den would do if they thought he was anything other than the umavi’s prodigy son, and how could he need help, he doesn’t need anyone.

he watches their tongues loosen with the wine— you know, he bought it months ago, when they moved in, he was going to give it as a housewarming gift but they asked if he would come in and it was like icemelt down his spine— and he trades them his fears, his doubts, one treason for another. they talk sacrilege over wine in the house the bright queen gifted, and then they ask essek if he’d like to join them in their hot tub.

it’s a thing he thinks over when he goes home and caleb almost follows— what he’d do, what he could do if caleb did, essek doesn’t even know. when he tries to sleep, when he rises early, earlier even than he does to meet the umavi, to make eight plates of breakfast.

when they don’t call and the breakfast grows cold in his parlor and dread sinks in him like a stone— they don’t want to see him, of course, they’ve already left, they have caleb to teleport now, they’ve gone to see the bright queen and he is already dead, standing sadly in his kitchen— and he retires to his study.

work, it keeps him from dreaming. the vial caleb had given him burns in his breast pocket— another time. he has committed enough treason lately— and he has almost forgotten that he didn’t clear the table when jester’s voice startles him so badly that he falls backward.

he’s halfway to the door before he remembers to put his mantle back on.

I know I kinda made that whole Modify Memory moment about Caleb’s reaction, but I also really liked how Jester handled that conversation. She’s been familiar with Modify Memory since before they even got the Xhorhouse, and I remember there was a bit of a theory floating around before they reached level 9 (when she got access to that spell) that Jester would surely use it all the time to prank people. And you know what? She hasn’t used it once. Because Jester cares so fucking deeply about people and never wants anyone to get hurt. She’s surrounded by people who’ve had their memories tampered with, who have been dominated and used against their will, and she has the power to do both (as a Trickery domain cleric she also has access to dominate person), and she has barely used either of those spells since getting them more than thirty episodes ago. 

I just thought it was worth mentioning that Jester didn’t just casually say “Yeah, I know it’s important” to Essek in a childish defense sort of way. She has thought about this and she has really grown into her powers, which are considerable at this point.

#wow hahaha it's almost like scanlan using modify memory on his friends pretty indiscriminately was a horrifying thing to do... #and anyone who actually bothered to think about it and cared about their friends would know it's way too far... #I love the strategic potential modify memory has but I will also never cease to be sickened by it #this spell that is gaslighting made simple #one of the most insidious abuse tactics not only readily available at the cost of one spell slot but also #unable to be undone without the aid of other powerful magic and where the difference between resistance and failure #comes down to the luck of a die roll #there are many shitty things in the real world but if the cost of magic like this not existing is magic not existing at all I'll take it #I know my life has made me more aware of and sensitive to things like this but... it's something to be aware of #critical role #cr spoilers #school of enchantment discourse #modify memory
