:: Center Theatre Group’s Writers Retreat 5/13-5/15/2022:: I’m still processing the magnitude of this weekend where 10 of the finest female-identifying mostly BIPOC actors in LA read the works-in-progress of the all female-identifying mostly BIPOC @ctgla’s 2021-2022 Writers Workshop— which includes me. I mean, I’m still processing the notion that I’ve been a part of this cohort of brilliant, established playwrights for the last 10 months, that I can actually call myself their peer! But I have to give unending thanks to @theluisalfaro, El Maestro my Maestro, who asked me to join a group of this caliber programmed by a theatre of this renown like it was the most natural thing in the world bc he somehow had a feeling that I had my own stories to tell after seeing me as an actor @osfashland — & dropped in my lap this unbelievable, life changing gift that I couldn’t even fathom was available to me & has now opened for me a mostly uncharted new artistic path. So it took a while to officially post anything about it until now— but after being in this (Covid compliant) room full of gifted & generous humans all weekend, experiencing my own words meeting the masterful artistry of these actors— some who were already friends & colleagues & the rest I’ve respected & admired from afar for years to finally meet now— & bolstered by the support & encouragement of my fellow playwrights who are now my dear friends— I’d like to take that scary leap & officially announce: I AM A PLAYWRIGHT. And my play will be a part of @ctgla’s festival of new work at the @kirkdouglastheatre this September 2022. HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the best of the best, my brother @pretzeldiet! I love this photo at his wedding last year bc it perfectly captures us & the fact that no matter how old we get, he will always be my 오빠/Opba—for real, I still can’t call him by his first name even tho we JUST realized this year that almost every Korean American we grew up with eventually stopped calling their siblings 오빠 or 언니/형 or 누나. It’s not even about holding onto Korean traditions, but that’s just who he’s always been to me. I thought his actual name was Opba Ko until I was 7 years old! He is the embodiment of who an 오빠 is (& no, I don’t mean the Kpop kind 🤣)— the protective big brother who is constantly looking out for you, who you can always count on in every situation, even if that means being called on your bullsh*t & reminding you to not take things so seriously sometimes. Happy birthday 오빠! I’m so thankful you were born & I’m so proud of the person you are & everything you’ve accomplished thus far. WFH job sent me on an actual work trip, going in the actual classroom in person with this awesome team of fellow @beyondthepage.midd faculty artists. I also found myself back in an actual rehearsal room with other people in the flesh for the first time in almost 2 years & maybe got a bit tooooo into tablework & blocking for these non-theatre undergrads— like, full-on nerd alert. 🤓 Luckily they were all game too. Seriously, these students are so much more put together, brilliant, & articulate about complex issues than I ever was in college. I love when people from multiple worlds/chapters converge, especially in artistic collaboration & activism. @mskathykhang has known me since I was 18, before I had the courage to even contemplate pursuing a career in the arts. Our lives have morphed & expanded since then but in this moment have met again (virtually) in the middle as she’s already been teaching a BIWOC yoga class & one of my @theblueprintartist collaborators @kinetakunutu had a dream to bring this wellness series to life. Kathy and yoga met in a gym when Kathy's favorite cardio teacher left and was replaced by an Ashtanga yoga teacher. A yoga mat replaced her cross-trainers as Kathy committed to time for herself in the midst of a career in vocational ministry and raising three children. Teacher training was just the start of her midlife crisis, which is still going on strong. Kathy is now an empty nester on her fifth yoga mat, protecting a growing virtual yoga space for BIWOC that started during the 2020 summer racial uprising. • We made $54 last week! Quick but jam packed overnight trip to the Bay Area last week filled my heart & fed my soul on such deeply emotional levels: Saw my beautifully talented friend @safiyaf in The Winter’s Tale for my 1st live in-person show in 18 months which was also my 1st time ever at @calshakes— & tho it’s outdoors, still grateful for their required proof of vax or negative Covid test. (Can’t wait to soon work with their AD @tingericting on OSF’s digital project, which starts filming next week.) Thanks @lilnoosh for joining me as my plus-one & @tristanavelinacunningham for a night of bonding & finding the Airbnb. On the drive up, visited my dear fellow NYC HOT chick (IYKYK) @elenachantang who I last saw 4 years ago on my way up to my 1st OSF season when she was pre-hubby & 2 kids. On the drive back down, had lunch with my forever sister/college roomie @hannahkinstas provided by her awesome hubs @keyzter & finally met their pandemic-era bébé @calebtkang— & as an added bonus, got to reconnect with another past NYC friend @meeshiemoshie who I haven’t seen in a decade but randomly just happened to have become next door neighbors & now shares a nanny with Hannah & Key. Full of gratitude & love for all of you near & far who wished me a happy birthday 💖🥰 Had the loveliest time this year, relaxing poolside for a self-gifted staycation at the @thelinehotel (grown woman flex 💪💁🏻♀️) & filling my belly with KBBQ & laughs with dear friends— seeing so many different chapters of my life converging & hitting it off famously filled my heart & soul as well. Special thanks to Liliana Kim Lee for organizing this dinner for me & finding this gem of an outdoor space, @tgikoreanbbq. (The staff gave us free bday soju & kalbi & had mad photo skills— look at that group pic!) Thanks also to @stevetrzaska who dropped everything to drive me down to check into my hotel the day before after I realized Lyft/Uber drivers were on strike, & then treated me to an early bday dinner of my other fave Korean food, #치맥chimaek (korean fried chicken & beer). 🍗🍻😋 And thanks to @ashleymoniquebutler who took me to & from dinner!
