Complex cake recipes with many steps are chef Angelo Dal Bó’s (@cozinhadalbo) favorite challenges. “I really take pleasure in the creativity and manual work,” he says. Angelo was inspired to become a chef as a child. “I grew up in the kitchen watching my grandmothers cook for family lunches.” Today, as a photographer and food blogger in his native Brazil, Angelo is out to spread his inherited passion to others. “I realized that my relationship with food is not about selling a physical product. It’s about creating and sharing photographs, recipes and inspiration. I hope I can inspire people to cook more often and take risks in the kitchen,” he says.

South Africa and Inequality

Inequality has strangled the throat of our young democratic nation. Our people’s mindsets are still gripped by fear and are still caught in the after effects of Apartheid. Those born out of the regime are kept from moving on by those bitter and refusing to let go and remain imprisoned by their mind forged manacles. “The mind is a powerful force. It can enslave us or empower us. It can plunge us into the depths of misery or take us to the heights of ecstasy” – David Cuschieri – I say mind forged because everyone has been given the right to freedom to do as their hearts desire yet they are still crippled by an inferiority complex that will not allow them to dream too big and try not to do too much. They have been liberated yet they remain chained to the past. Those who manage to emancipate themselves, armour themselves with knowledge that comes with being educated. Knowledge is Power, and with Power comes great responsibility – but if Power lands in the wrong hands, Power can be corrupted. Corruption becomes abused entrusted power which particularly hurts the people who lean on the integrity of the people in authority. Corruption undermines the state legitimacy and service delivery by provision of uneven public delivery. Corruption introduces another form of division of economical class in addition to the racial divides. The rich get richer while the poor get poorer. The poor relies on the government that supposedly owes them after apartheid, living from hand to mouth on social grants and RDP programs. They don’t offer skilled labour so they cannot maintain a permanent job and thus form this reliance on defiled government which deprives them of survival instincts which would cause them to seek better opportunity. They instead get comfortable in the cycle of poverty as they see no better coming from their efforts. Their psyches are wounded and cannot recover from their adversity – because the war has already lost in their minds.
