The rip of the plastic package around the ear piercing kit sounded deafening in the quiet of Guanshan’s room. It crinkled and cracked as He Tian pulled it out of the packaging, momentarily flipping it over to skim over the directions. Guanshan stared at He Tian’s fingers as he did so, the blood rushing in his head nearly just as loud as the crunch of the plastic. They were sitting on his bed now, facing each other with He Tian perched between his knees, bent legs on either side of his hips so he could sit close enough to reach the ear Guanshan had requested to be pierced. It was all so much more intimate than he imagined this moment to be, but he couldn’t bring himself to stop riding the train of emotion that just kept sweeping him along.

He hadn’t expected to kiss He Tian that night. The last several days had left him in a state of whiplash between surges of adrenaline and overwhelming affection that he felt as though he were drowning at times amongst it all. Before it all went down, he already knew that his feelings for He Tian were starting to grow to a point where denial seemed entirely pointless. And yet, he couldn’t stop himself from comparing the two of them and hyper analyzing how incredibly inferior he truly was to the other boy, especially after he lost his only means of supporting his mom. He tried to push He Tian away, to remind him that whatever was between them was nothing more than a stupid distraction from the kind of shit his life normally provided for him, but when things truly got bad and he felt as though he had finally reached that breaking point, He Tian showed up again and refused to leave. He had always been stubborn, but this was something else entirely. He Tian’s attention became narrow, focused and patient. It was as if he realized the same thing Guanshan had realized for himself - that whatever was between them wasn’t just some teenage game to pass time, but rather something deeper, more vulnerable and way more heavy than either one of them expected.

Which is why after several days of chasing those highs, allowing the soft moments between them to bleed into everything else as they fought their literal demons, Guanshan couldn’t bring himself to hide it any longer. The train swept him up and he didn’t want to get off.

Guanshan stared as He Tian shifted closer to him, lifting a bandaged hand to touch the top of Guanshan’s right ear. His skin felt like it was on fire as the other boy gently swept the pad of his thumb over the cartilage.

“Is this good?”

Guanshan watched He Tian’s lips form the words, caught up in the memory of those slightly chapped lips pliant against his own. “Yeah.”

He Tian’s lips quirked a bit with smug acknowledgment that he knew exactly what Guanshan had on his mind. His thumb rubbed the spot on Guanshan’s ear again and he leaned forward to get closer, the piercer in hand.

“Tell me if it hurts.”

Guanshan shivered at the cool touch of the plastic device against the top of his ear, but didn’t move his eyes away from He Tian’s face. “I trust you.”

He Tian paused, seemingly caught off guard by the willing confession. His eyes grew soft as he looked at Guanshan and lightly passed his tongue over his lips, smiling wryly.

“Little Mo, if you keep saying stuff like that, I’m going to kiss you again.”

Guanshan’s heart thudded in his chest, but he was past the stage of being shy. He knew what he wanted and knew that He Tian wanted it too. “Then do it.”

He Tian’s eyes caught his own, his expression suddenly intense, when Guanshan heard a small snap. His ear flared momentarily in pain as the new piercing settled into his cartilage, followed shortly by a puff of cool air soothing over the hot skin. He Tian’s nose brushed against the sensitive skin of his cheek as he whispered, “Look at you, so sure of yourself.”

Guanshan swallowed thickly and turned his head to close the space between them, catching He Tian by the corner of his mouth. He Tian didn’t hesitate to turn into his touch, refitting their mouths to kiss more comfortably as he let Guanshan take the lead. His fingers played with the baby hairs at the base of Guanshan’s neck until the redhead gasped, pulling away just enough to meet their eyes again, face completely flushed.

“I hate you.”

He Tian grinned that knowing grin, more than aware of what Guanshan was actually saying to him. “I love you too, Momo.”
