Lake Bodom is a lake in Finland, located on the suburbs of Espoo. It’s approximately three kilometres in length and on kilometre in width. In the early morning hours of 5 June, 1960, it was the scene of a brutal triple murder of young campers. Maila Irmeli Bjorklund and Anja Tuulikki Maki were both 15-years-old. Accompanying the two friends on their camping trip were their boyfriends, Seppo Antero Boisman and Nils Wilhelm Gustafsson, both 18-years-old. They pitched their tent close to the lake and spent the evening fishing. Between 4AM and 6AM, Maila, Anja, and Seppo, were all stabbed and bludgeoned to death. Nils was the sole survivor of the attack, sustaining a concussion, fractures to the jaw, bruises to the face, and stab wounds. Nils would later say he had no recollection of the attack due to shock. An investigation revealed that the killer never entered the tent and instead, attacked the teenagers from the outside of the tent.
Several items belonging to the teenagers were stolen, including a wallet, some clothing, and Nils shoes. Due to the bloody footprints found outside, it was evident that the killer had been wearing Nils shoes when he fled the scene. Approximately 500 metres from the crime scene, some of these items, including the shoes, were discovered discarded and partially hidden. Nils’ girlfriend, Maila, sustained the most vicious injuries - her underwear had been removed and she had been stabbed multiple times post-mortem. Several young boys who were birdwatching would come forward to claim they saw a blonde man walking away from the collapsed tent at approximately 6AM.
Over the course of the investigation there have been several suspects. One of the prime suspects was Karl Valdemar Gyllstrom, a kiosk vendor at Lake Bodom. He was known for his aggressive behaviour towards campers and shortly before his death, he confessed to his neighbour that he had killed the teenagers. In 1969, however, Karl coincidentally drowned in Lake Bodom - it’s unknown if it was intentional or accidental. His wife provided an alibi for Karl for the night of the murder, saying he was fast asleep at home but shortly before she passed away, she claimed that this alibi was fictional and that he had threatened to kill her if she did not cover for him.
Another prime suspect throughout the investigation was Hans Assman, an alleged KGB spy. The day after the murders, he checked himself into the Helsinki Surgical Hospital. He was said to be extremely dishevelled, with black fingernails, and something red staining his clothing. The doctors who saw him that afternoon were adamant that the red staining was blood. Hans had blonde hair which he sloppily chopped off after a description of the attacker, as given by the birdwatchers witnesses, was released in the media. His clothing was said to match the description of the clothing given by the same witnesses. Nevertheless, he was never brought in for questioning but several books have been written about him and he has been linked to several others unsolved murders in Finland. In fact, a man who looked strikingly similar to Hans was photographed at the funeral of the victims.
The case went cold until 2004, when Nils Gustafsson, the sole survivor, was arrested on suspicion of murdering his friends. The reason Nils was arrested was because of DNA testing that had been carried out on his discarded shoes. Nils defence contended that the shoes must have been stolen from him and worn by the killer but the prosecution argued that Nils was the killer and had thrown away his shoes afterwards in an attempt to conceal his guilt. The prosecution claimed that Nils wanted to have sex with one of the girls and killed them all in a fit of rage.
Ultimately, the court agreed with the defence. They believed that the eyewitnesses that spotted a blonde man leaving the crime scene were credible and it was unlikely that he could have inflicted his own wounds himself. He was acquitted of all charges and the case still remains unsolved.

In the early morning hours of 13 November, 1974, 23-year-old Ronald DeFeo Jr. systematically shot and killed his father, mother, and his four siblings, as they slept in their beds of their Amityville, Long Island, New York home.
During his trial, he claimed that he had killed his family in self-defense because he had heard their voices plotting to kill him. But the story doesn’t end there… In December 1975, the Lutz family purchased the house where the murders had taken place, and over the course of 28 days, they claimed they were plagued and terrorized by paranormal phenomena  before fleeing the property.
Some such claims included green slime running from the walls, hidden rooms, images of half headed demons, a demonic pig, as well as mysterious welts and wounds appearing out of nowhere.
After the family fled the macabre home, they called in investigators. This was when the photograph above was snapped. It allegedly shows a ghost of a little boy peering out from behind the door; many believe it to be the ghost of 9-year-old John Matthew DeFeo.
Whether the truth in this haunting case was stretched or even a hoax all together, it still remains one of the most sensationalized ghost stories worldwide, even inspiring multiple books and movies.

The Ghost Pilot - 1987
In 1987, Mrs Sayer was visiting air airfield in England with her friend. She thought it would fun to take a photo of her sitting in the cockpit.
When the image was developed, there was a man sitting in the pilot’s seat who hadn’t been there when the photo was taken. A long lost pilot? No one is sure.

The Smiling Man
The Grinning Man, also known as Indrid Cold, is reported to be human-like in appearance, though is commonly associated with UFO activity and is sometimes believed to be an alien. It is also believed possible that he is connected with the Men In Black.
October, 1966
The first sighting of the man is believed to be on 16 October 1966. When two young boys were at the Elizabeth’s New Jersey, spending time together until they noticed a very tall human-like being behind the fence. Both of the boys were brave and went towards the man, trying to step closer to see the man. However, both of them started to feel fear, and realized the man had a creepy smile on his face. The man starts to look at the boys, peering at them though the fence. The boys started running away from the man until they got away. After the encounter, boys started remembering more of the the man’s appearance, describing his face as having small beady eyes and no other features other than his titular grin.
November, 1966
Interestingly enough, after two weeks another man had a similar experience. On 1 November 1966, A salesman which was driving in the night to his home, he noticed weird lightning in front of him. In front of him, the salesman saw a weird-lamp looking spacecraft vehicle. The door opened up, as the man got out from the spacecraft, going towards the salesman. The man spoke to the salesman telepathically, introducing his name as “Indrid Cold”. After the two had a conversation, where the man said he was an alien from a distant planet who meant no harm to the salesman, Indrid Cold said that he will visit the salesman again, as Indrid Cold entered his spacecraft and disappeared.
The salesman ended up contacting the police, trying to tell them the story, convince them that it’s real. The police didn’t believe the story, while the news-outlets became interested in the story. After the salesman told his story, other people went forward and told their experiences with Indrid Cold as well. The salesman also claimed that Indrid Cold brought him to his planet for six months in a far-away galaxy.
Family Sighting
A family also reported that they had paranormal experiences, which indicates towards Indrid Cold. The daughter of the family woke up one night, seeing a big tall man, grinning at her creepily. The man walked around her bed, and stood in front of her. As the daughter screamed in fear, and went under her covers to hide from the man, he just disappeared.

What does it mean when I randomly hear someone on heels walking in our attic? Sometimes in the middle of the night but also just whenever. It’s been happening for years and I always thought maybe it was our neighbor? Even though our houses don’t collide. Recently found out it is definitely not my neighbor lol. Also want to add someone years ago told me my house had a presence but that it had been a man.

The Moorgate Tragedy
On February 28, 1975, a train crashed while traveling along the Northern City Line in London. Forty-three people died, another 74 were injured, and the accident became known as the worst of its kind during peacetime. The tragedy came after the train failed to stop at a platform and crashed into a concrete wall at the end of the tunnel at the Moorgate station. The rescue operation lasted six days, and engineers started investigating the cause of the accident immediately after.
However, they couldn’t find an answer. The train was mechanically sound, which led them to suspect that the train driver was to blame. It was found that the driver had his hand on the power handle until two seconds before impact, and he didn’t try to protect his face as the train slammed into the concrete. Survivors told authorities that the driver behaved strangely, almost zombie-like, as the train sped toward its horrible fate. At that time, 56-year-old Lesley Newson had been with London Transport for six years, and there had been no red flags regarding his state of mind during that time.
On the day of the crash, he’d had money on him that was meant to be for his daughter’s car, and there was no indication that he’d been suicidal or intended to perform an act of terror. An autopsy on Newson revealed that he was in good health, and he had a tiny amount of alcohol in his system.
What happened to Newson that day remains unknown—whether he had been in a fugue state or given a substance that altered his thinking. It also remains unknown whether he deliberately crashed the train or whether an undiscovered condition caused him to become “blank” and crash the train

The first of the 1944 gasser incidents occurred at a house on Grant Ave., Mattoon, on August 31, 1944. Urban Raef was awakened during the early hours of the morning by a strange odor. He felt nauseated and weak, and suffered from a fit of vomiting. Suspecting that he was suffering from domestic gas poisoning, Raef’s wife tried to check the kitchen stove to see if there was a problem with the pilot light, but found that she was partially paralyzed and unable to leave her bed.
Later that night (some contemporary accounts refer to the time as the morning of the following day), a similar incident was also reported by a young mother living close by. She was awakened by the sound of her daughter coughing but found herself unable to leave her bed.
The next day, September 1, there was a third reported incident. A Mrs. Kearney, of Marshall Avenue, Mattoon, reported smelling a strong, sweet odor around 11:00 pm. At first she dismissed the smell, believing it to be from flowers outside of the window, but the odor soon became stronger and she began to lose feeling in her legs. Mrs. Kearney panicked and her calls attracted her sister, Mrs. Ready, who was in the house at the time. Mrs. Ready also noticed the odor, and determined that it was coming from the direction of the bedroom window, which was open at the time. The police were contacted, but no evidence of a prowler was found. At around 12:30 am, Bert Kearney, Mrs. Kearney’s husband (a local taxi driver who had been absent during the time of the attack), returned home to find an unidentified man hiding close to one of the house’s windows. The man fled and Kearney was unable to catch him. Kearney’s description of the prowler was of a tall man dressed in dark clothing, wearing a tight fitting cap. This description was reported in the local media, and became the common description of the gasser throughout the Mattoon incident. After the attack, Mrs. Kearney reported suffering from a burning sensation on her lips and throat, which were attributed to the effects of the gas.
Initially, it was suspected that robbery was the primary motive for the attack. At the time of the incidents, the Kearneys had a large sum of money in the house, and it was surmised that the prowler could have seen Mrs. Kearney and her sister counting it earlier that evening. Local newspapers incorrectly reported this incident as being the first gasser attack.
In the days following the Kearney attack, there were half a dozen similar attacks, though none of the purported victims were able to provide a clear description of the prowler, and no clues were found at the scene of the attacks. The first specimen of physical evidence was found on the night of September 5, when Carl and Beulah Cordes of North 21st Street returned home around 10:00 pm. After spending a few minutes in the house they noticed a piece of white cloth, slightly larger than a man’s handkerchief, sitting on their porch next to the screen door. Beulah Cordes picked up the cloth and smelled it. As soon as she inhaled, she became violently ill. She described the effect as being similar to an electric shock. Her face quickly began to swell, she experienced a burning sensation in her mouth and throat, and began to vomit. As with other victims, she also reported feeling weak and experiencing partial paralysis of her legs. Beulah Cordes later hypothesized that the cloth had been left on the porch in order to knock out the family dog, which usually slept there, so that the prowler could gain access to the house unnoticed.
In addition to the cloth, a skeleton key, described as looking “well used,” was reportedly found on the sidewalk adjacent to the porch, along with a large, almost empty, tube of lipstick. The cloth was analyzed by the authorities, but they found no chemicals on it that could explain Beulah Cordes’ reaction.
The same night a second incident was reported, this time in North 13th Street, at the home of Mrs. Leonard Burrell. She reported seeing a stranger break in through her bedroom window and then attempt to gas her.
Public concern over the alleged gassings quickly rose, the FBI became involved, and the local police issued a statement calling on residents to avoid lingering in residential areas, and warning that groups set up to patrol for the gasser should be disbanded for reasons of public safety. Chief of Police C.E. Cole also warned concerned citizens to exercise due restraint when carrying or discharging firearms.
During this period, there was also an increase in physical evidence of attacks being reported, ranging from footprints allegedly being discovered underneath windows to tears being found in window screens.
By September 12, local police had received so many false alarms (mostly from citizens believing that they smelled gas, or that they had seen a prowler) that they reduced the priority afforded to gasser reports and announced that the entire incident was likely the result of explainable occurrences exacerbated by public fears, and a sign of the anxiety felt by women while local men were on war service.

out of curiosity: why so much on Loeb and Leopold? I’m loving your posts and I’m just wondering: why the fascination/wealth of knowledge?
Honestly? I don't even know. They just fascinate me. Also, the way their case has been used by the media (movies, books and a musical) is just very interresting to me. I also enjoy deep diving into cases, if there is anything to deep dive into lol.

It was around 8:30AM on the 26th of August, 1998, when a jogger came across a gruesome scene near a ditch in the 2100 block of North Main, Galena Park, Texas. It was the body of man. He had evidently been the victim of a brutal and sustained attack; he had contusions and abrasions from head to toe.
The man was identified as 59-year-old Louis “Buddy” Musso. Shortly after the body was found, 44-year-old Susan Basso went to the police department in Jacinto City to report Buddy, who she lived with, missing.
Investigators immediately became suspicious of Susan when she and her 23-year-old son, James O’Malley, came in to identify Buddy’s body. Susan engaged in fake hysterics while James was completely expressionless.
The mother and son would be brought in for questioning and James would make a disturbing confession, telling investigators that Buddy had been killed by his mother, himself and a group of other people had beaten Buddy to death and then dumped his body.
In addition to Susan and James, four other people would be arrested: 54-year-old Bernice Ahrens, her 25-year-old son, Craig Aherns, her 22-year-old daughter, Hope Ahrens, and Hope’s 26-year-old fiancé, Terence Singleton, were all arrested and charged with the capital murder of Buddy.
All six were charged with the capital murder of Buddy. James would divulge to investigators that his mother, Susan, had been trying to become Buddy’s legal guardian. While Buddy was 59-years-old, he was mentally disabled and had the mind of a child.
Investigators would now need to determine how exactly Susan and Buddy knew one another.
Buddy had originally lived in an assisted living home in New Jersey where he was a familiar face. He was known for the country music which emanated from his apartment, sometimes locals could hear him singing along. He became increasingly involved in religious pursuits and was baptized and enrolled in religious classes.
Many years beforehand, Buddy had been married and he had a son with his wife. However, his wife had tragically died of cancer and Buddy longed for love. There was nothing he enjoyed more in his life than being a husband.
Investigators would learn that around a year before Buddy died, he and Susan met at a church bizarre near his assisted living home in New Jersey. They started what Buddy believed was a romantic relationship and Susan encouraged him to move to Texas….

Somerton Man Identified
An unidentified man found dead on an Australian beach with an unsmoked cigarette and a mysterious Persian phrase inside his jacket may have been identified after 74 years. Nicknamed the “Somerton Man” after the beach where he was found, he had “Tamam Shud” scribbled on the inside of his pocket, which translates to "Finished". His cause of death hasn’t been determined but pathologists agreed there was evidence of poisoning. Now, Professor Derek Abbott from the University of Adelaide claims he knows who he was.
Professor Abbott matched the man’s DNA to his cousins’ and discovered they all shared a common relative: Carl “Charles” Webb, an Electrical Engineer from Melbourne. Abbott delved deeper into Carl’s life and says that Webb was born on November 16, 1905, making him 43 when he died. Carl was married but disappeared some time in 1947, with his wife just thinking he’d left her so she filed for divorce. He was never reported missing. An official confirmation is expected to be announced in the next few days.

The Alice Killings
The Alice Killings is an urban legend circulating in Japan. According to the tale, a string of murders happened in Japan between 1999 and 2005. The victim’s bodies were mutilated, with limbs torn off, and the name Alice was written somewhere nearby in the victim’s blood.
Police also found one playing card carefully placed at each gruesome scene. The first victim was found in the woods, impaled by tree branches. The second victim had his vocal cords torn out. The third, a teenage girl, had her skin flayed, her mouth sliced open, her eyes carved out, and a crown sewn to her head. The final two victims were twins: the children had been given lethal injections while they slept.
Allegedly, police made one arrest in 2005 when a suspect was found wearing a jacket that belonged to one of the victims, but they couldn’t connect him to any of the crime scenes. The man claimed the jacket was given to him by a demon with no face. Then, a morbid song called Hitobashira Arisu (which roughly translates as “Alice of Human Sacrifice”) was released in Japan by a producer known as Yugami-P in 2008. The song detailed the killings and mentioned some distorted dream world (perhaps where this faceless demon lives). It’s widely believed the killer wrote this song, but they have yet to be found.
The truth is, there were no “Alice Killings” in Japan. However, just before this legend was born, a real-life serial killer known as the Playing Card Killer was terrorizing Madrid, Spain. Police were out in full force back in 2003 trying to find the person responsible for murdering six people and injuring three more - each time leaving a playing card on the bodies. Authorities were at a loss; there was no clear connection between the victims and no evident motive.
They knew they were dealing with a psychopath choosing victims at random. They may never have found him if he didn’t waltz right in and confess. The Playing Card Killer turned out to be Alfredo Galán Sotillo. Alfredo changed his story multiple times and even denied the killings shortly after confessing, claiming a Nazi was forcing him to confess to the murders. Nazi conspiracy or not, Alfredo was sentenced to 142 years in prison.

This tiny shoe was found by a farmer on a remote sheep trail in Ireland in 1835. It measured two and seven-eights inches long and seven-eights of an inch at its widest. It was black and showed wear and tear at the heel which led the farmer to believe it belonged to “the little people”. The shoe was examined by scientists at Harvard University who found it to be hand stitched and made of mouse skin.

19-year-old Nathan Leopold and 18-year-old Richard Loeb were both law students at the University of Chicago when they decided that they wanted to commit the “perfect crime.”
During the summer of 1924, the two young men rented a car and drove to a local private school where they met 14-year-old Robert Franks and offered him a ride. They had picked Robert in particular due to the fact that he was the son of a wealthy watch manufacturer. The murderous duo had already written a ransom note when they picked the young boy up and it was delivered to his father, Jacob, the following morning.
Before Jacob even had a chance to respond to the ransom note, the body of his son was found in a culvert. Found near his body was a pair of glasses which were traced back to Leopold. They confessed that they had attempted to knock the boy unconscious with a chisel but they had hit him too hard, killing him.
Loeb died in prison in 1936 and Leopold was released in 1958.

‘Seriously McDonalds’ Hoax
“Seriously McDonalds” is the name under which a viral photograph was spread in June 2011. The photograph shows a sign, which is in fact a hoax, claiming that McDonald’s has implemented a new policy charging African-Americans more, as “an insurance measure”. Despite having existed for some time, the picture was spread around the Internet, especially on Twitter, in June 2011, by people who were offended or amused by the photograph. McDonald’s acted quickly to deny the legitimacy of the sign, but it continued to trend on Twitter under the hashtag “#SeriouslyMcDonalds” and “#seriouslymcdonalds” for a few days. The company’s response to the hoax has received praise from journalists and public relations professionals. The sign has a footer which says “McDonald’s Corporation” and features the McDonald’s logo and a helpline number. However, the helpline number actually connects to the KFC Customer Satisfaction Hotline.
McDonald’s responded to the hoax on 11 June by tweeting “That pic is a senseless & ignorant hoax. McD’s values ALL our customers. Diversity runs deep in our culture on both sides of the counter.” Despite McDonald’s denial, the speed at which the picture spread was increased. McDonald’s reiterated their earlier message, tweeting “That Seriously McDonalds picture is a hoax”. The photograph became the most highly trending topic over the weekend of the 11–12 June, being spread under the hashtags “#SeriouslyMcDonalds” and “#seriouslymcdonalds”. The tag was reportedly used some 20 times per-second over the course of the weekend. The picture was eventually removed from Twitpic, and the speed at which it was spreading declined.
Little damage was done by the hoax, which, in addition to McDonald’s response, was revealed through Twitter users’ own investigations. The image is no longer well known or remembered, due, according to public relations professional Ann Marie van den Hurk, to McDonald’s effective response to the image
