I’ve taken my rats to a specialty clinic 1.5 hours away and drove similar distance to the breeder. A secure travel cage with lots of bedding, keep the car at a good temperature, and bring cucumbers for their water source during the trip!

is 1 - 2 hours too long to transport rats in a car?? would that stress them out?? every rattery and rat rescue i can find is over an hour away :[

A rat first aid kit, to me, is bridging the <24 hour gap until I can see our usual veterinarian. If it’s life-or-death, I’m heading to the E-vet; if it’s not as urgent, I wouldn’t want to start any medication or procedure without approval. Here are some additional sources (x, x, x).

Highly recommend:

URI meds (Doxycycline and Enrofloxican)

Pain meds (Metacam)

Pre-calculated doses and 1 mL oral syringes

Babyfood/Ensure (encourage sick/elderly rats to eat)

Sterile Solution and curved tip syringe (wound flushing)

Clean carrier/small hospital cage

Phone numbers/address/hours of nearest exotics vets (both usual vet and after-hours emergency vet)

Good to keep on hand:

VetRap (for blocking access to major injuries/surgical site, use with gauze against skin)

Sterile gauze (for bleeding and use with VetRap)

First aid tape

Styptic powder (minor bleeding i.e. tail or foot injuries)

Medicated eye infection drops

Parasite medication (i.e. kitten revolution)

Digital kitchen scales (tracking weight)

Disposable gloves

Humidifier

Air purifier
