i don't knwo that it like, needs to result in a terminology change, but it's pretty fucked up when you think about how the skimpy, two-piece bathing suit got the name "bikini" because the United States government decided to perform one of the most destructive acts of environmental racism in history there.

#that discreption does nothing to convey the real horror and evil of that event #like the us knew immediately that the marshal islanders would be hit with the nuclear fallout #and when the islanders asked us wtf is going on the us was like no worries #the island which was hit with the immediate fallout was evacuated in couple of days but it was already too late #they got acute radiation poisoning #the us military took them to their base to be “treated” but really to be guinea pigs #they actually didn't treat them at all didn't even give them pain meds just observed how radiation poisoning slowly killed them #how their skin pealed off when they tried to wash it and other absolute horror #and like if you read about it the horrors just keep happening there's no end

i'm actually very okay with "there was no other way this could end" endings. if they gotta die, let them die. if they gotta break up or go the wrong way or lose something important, let'em. so long as it completes the story. only thing i dislike more than a forced happy ending is a forced bad ending

#in most stories the ending is obvious #and it's the point #in those unpredictable twist ending is a betrayal of the story and the reader/viewer #on the otherhand #when the ending is specifically made to be unsure it would be betrayal of the story to then make it the most easily guessed endings #for example in murder mystery it would be pretty let down if the murderer ended up being the most obvious option

I'm late to the aro positivity party but thought I could shout out a manga I read this year, I Want to be a Wall!

It's about an aroace woman (who is really into BL) and a gay man being arranged into a marriage and how they navigate that, growing closer and kind of becoming a QPR.

The stuff that really got to me was the discussion of the woman's experience with her asexuality (and aromanticism though that isn't explicitly labeled), how it connects to her media tastes and the way people have hurt her in the past. It was all absolutely heartbreaking.

A fun detail I also like is how the pair act out romantic tropes (Gift of Magi style misunderstanding, paranoia about "cheating,"), but they are all done through a platonic context.

(Ex. Even though they're not in romantic love, he still feels upset at the idea of losing their bond, or her getting hurt by someone he doesn't know.)

There's not too many chapters of it out, unfortunately (only like two volumes), but the ones I read are very enjoyable and I'd love to put this on other people's radar!

pirates of the caribbean really introduced an eldritch octopus man who kills indiscriminately and torments the dead as their poster villain and then you watch the movies and it's like, "oh no, actually the worst villain in this series is a small white british man who functions as the herald of capitalism" and that was very very brave of them

#there's even a cut scene where they mention how the east indian trading company is doing trans antlantic slave trade #which they absolutely did do #but i guess disney was too coward to go that hard

🔹 Saying that it's okay to write or read about dark and taboo topics but only when they're portrayed in a certain way is still censorship.

🔹 Wanting to ban or forbid media that you believe portrays a negative topic in a positive light, by glorifying, romanticizing, or fetishizing it is still censorship.

🔹 There is no objective metric to decide if a story is portraying a negative topic the 'right' way.

🔹 Just because a piece of fiction doesn't explicitly condemn or portray an evil action in a bad light in the text doesn't mean the author thinks its good or is trying to persuade the audience that it is good.

🔹 Survivors of trauma will not always write fiction about their trauma in a way that seems 'right' or 'normal' to you.

🔹 Banning fiction because it portrays dark, taboo topics in a way you consider gross or disgusting is still censorship.

#there is a difference between criticising and trying to ban a thing despite what some people say #you can in fact criticise a thing without it being dangerous or harmful #in reality fiction very rarely (like outside explicit fascist propaganda) is directly and demonstrably harmful or dangerous

People really do assume the FromSoft formula is just "super hard boss fights" but really it's Tall Ladies, Hidetaka Miyazaki's barely contained masochistic death fetish, incredibly hard but usually fair boss fights, community graffiti, annoying rat, even more annoying dog, walk walk fashion baby, poison swamp, bottomless pit, Large Jovial Dad Figure, jolly cooperation, Berserk Reference, and slapstick comedy.
