For those of you that don’t know me (or forgot who I was because I stopped posting on tumblr lol) I’m a writer, director and storyboard artist working in the animation industry. I’ve worked on Star vs the Forces of Evil, Ducktales, Tuca and Bertie, and currently The Great North! The past year has been pretty rough for original animated shows. Currently, the industry seems to love corporate mergers more than they love animation.

i've noticed that on some board not all of the characters details are drawn, what does that depand on?

It’s called a shorthand! Storyboard artists need to draw quickly, so instead of spending time on details we draw just enough to get the ideas across. There’s no official shorthand on Star, but I’ve heard of some shows encouraging board artists not to draw hairlines or noses. Sometimes if that stuff is drawn incorrectly, the animators will animate it incorrectly. If those details are left out of the boards, the animators will animate it on model.

i was wondering, what's your average drawing speed when doing storyboards?

Hard to say, since I typically storyboard in phases. I start with crappy post it note thumbnails that only I can read, then I turn those into thumbnails that are clear enough for other people to read, then I do clean, finished panels. If I find I’m spending too much time drawing one panel, I’ll set a timer for 5 min and make myself move on.

You know, I was conflicted over the first Starco kiss, and while I'm still a bit conflicted about it, it's not as much as it was originally since I looked at it from writting perspectives and read some good analysis of the scene.

It’s funny how many people are saying “I wanted a Starco kiss... but not like that!” My favorite TV shows have characters confess their feelings for each other at the most inconvenient times, because without conflict there wouldn’t be a story! If you’re feeling conflicted about that Starco kiss, the writers/board artists did their job ;)
