When I was in my early teens, my grandmother taught me how to knit. She lived far away, so I didn’t get to see her very often, and while we weren’t especially close, I knew I wanted to connect with her on something special. She spent a week with us one year, and watching her knit fascinated me. I sat down beside her and asked her to teach me, and I’ve been knitting ever since. . This week, my dad found a bag full of her old knitting things: vibrantly colored balls of yarn, a spectacular collection of circular needles, an assortment of unique scissors, so many beanies I can’t keep track of them all, and some amazing vintage pattern books. Being a lover of books and all things vintage, the books are by far my favorite find. The oldest one in her collection looks as if it is from the 50’s or 60’s, though I had trouble finding a publish date. I’ve never seen anything like it, and I can’t wait to try some of the patterns within it. And the fact that it comes from my grandmother makes it all the more special. . Why are traditional purses always so plain? Solid colors, usually very little structure or form, simplistic in nature and design. Yes they’re made of durable materials and are built for maximum storage, but do they have to be limited to accomplishing both these things while looking so drab? Where’s the life? Where’s the creativity, the inspiration, the color? A woman’s wardrobe consists of many different colors, patterns, and designs. She’s not going to have a closet full of only blacks or only greys or only dress shirts and suit skirts. Why would she limit herself that way? And an accessory - an item meant to add flair and spunk - should be just as varied. . I’ve never been a fan of plain leather bags. I feel they’ve cheated me in some way, like the designer just threw some scraps together and said “There, it’s a bucket with handles, it’s good enough” and then marketed it as a “must-have” because it has the name of someone famous on it. I’ve always been drawn to purses with much more thought put into them. . What about you? What do you look for when you shop for a new purse? Do you just want something big enough to carry all your day-to-day necessities? Sewing is messy. Scrap fabric sheds; threads materialize everywhere: pins disappear in the carpet (ouch! 😫). I’ve always admired photos of sewing studios that show off only the best of what the space has to offer, but part of me wonders how much they ever use it, because it stays SO. DARN. CLEAN!! Needless to say, I’m a bit jealous. But sewing isn’t all about glamor and perfection. Sometimes it’s about mistakes and half-finished projects and making a mess. While it’s beautiful to show off work that looks like perfection, I find I’m most satisfied when I walk out covered in fuzz and threads, leaving behind a room that looked like a mini tornado swept through it. So here’s to the mess.
