Sorry for not blogging in detail but that is due to my promise to my family that I remain "safe" on social media. I don't blame them, really, after what happened with #FreeSarah and the arrests that happened after (not that I'm anybody significant enough to stir up anything but a promise is a promise). However, I still want to do something, so other than currently wearing black in solidarity, this is the best I can do. Plus I am attempting to make a #Lawan playlist on Spotify, so we'll see how that goes. 😅 (Suggestions are welcomed, by the way)

#lawan = fight

Malaysians are banding together to fight. Fight the injustice that is all around us. Fight the crooked backdoor government that we did not vote for and who has failed us miserably in these desperate times. Fight for those of us who had no choice but to literally raise the white flag (#benderaputih) to ask for help. Fight for the broken promise we had voted for. Fight against this shameless and blatant display of corruption. Fight for a decent democracy. Fight for our right to live and be heard. Fight for our voices and our votes to have mattered and that it will always matter.

We can't go to the streets or the polls so we shall raise the...

#benderahitam = black flag

Malaysians are raising the black flag as a sign of our protest, our #lawan. We will raise them and take a picture of our #benderahitam and post on any social media platform at 3pm (our time) on July 3rd, demanding for 3 things...

This is me with the #benderahitam my family and I made. It's way past midnight when I took this picture. But by the time this post is out, so will this flag.

#rakyatjagarakyat = Malaysian citizens, we, the people will help each other. We will look out and take care of each other. We will fight together.

Just as we had done before, we will make history and #lawan for change again.

P.S. I apologize for using the #stopasianhate but I just want this to be seen.

Updates on #Lawan

It's now more than 24 hours since the start of the #Lawan protest. The majority of it was present on Twitter but there were also some on Instagram (and one seemingly lone ranger on Tumblr, yours truly 😅)

Twitter was flooded with posts from the rakyat, all hanging their makeshift black flags, be it their black t-shirts, black cloths, trash bags and even their black tudungs! (hijabs). Mine was a pillowcase 😆 They were all over, whether out on balconies, over the gates, windows, and even the washing line. And of course it wouldn't be a true Malaysian protest if it's without our tongue-in-cheek humour, as evident with some petowners taking pictures of their black cats in place of #benderahitam. The OOTD theme for everyone was black, black outfits, black face masks, even black traditional clothes. Lagu tema? (Theme song) A rather popular one that pops up from time to time was "Welcome to the Black Parade" by My Chemical Romance which is rather befitting, I think.

From 3pm to midnight, we managed to reach over 200,000 tweets, exceeding our expectations 🇲🇾👏👏👏

However, with all this happening, our local media did not report anything about #lawan (save for Malaysiakini and FreeMalaysiaToday). sHocKing!

But it doesn't matter. It may not seem much but as is our way, Malaysia will find our means to protest in peace. At least that is our wish, to make the necessary change peacefully and more importantly, lawfully. Shudders the thought, though, that even that basic idea is lost on those who holds the power in our country now = #kerajaan gagal (failed government).

#BenderaPutih is a movement we, the rakyat, made so that those who need help, whether it's food, rent, counseling, can ask for help with dignity. Just raise a white flag, send it out on social media and someone nearby will come and help you with whatever you need. The movement has seen and is still seeing a resounding response. A truly beautiful movement of basic human compassion where we, the people will help each other #rakyatjagarakyat.

And now this is the latest development...

We, Malaysians are getting more and more tired by the day. Tired and so, so angry. Also, and more so for me personally, we feel grief. See, we are wearing black because we are also in mourning for them...

As I end this post now, the clouds overhead are darkening, echoing a gentle murmur of thunder. I wonder what storms lie ahead for us...
