i just realized that the live action's ending is an inverse of the novel's.

where in the novel, when qiushi goes back to reality, the dead stayed dead but he did not lose nanzhu.

with the LA, everyone is alive but jiushi lost lanzhu.

knowing that jiushi has spent a lifetime loving lanzhu but barely got to spend a fraction of it with him.

do you ever wonder if in those 50 years, especially in his senior years, if jiushi slowly started forgetting what lanzhu looked like? the sound of his voice? if he still remembers which eye his two beauty marks were on?

but i suppose that is the tragedy of love — of being the one who gets left behind; loving them far longer than you will remember them.

Lin Qiushi continues to be a hilarious horror protagonist in Kaleidoscope of Death

Just as he was about to ask “Li Dongyuan, why are you knocking on my door?”, he felt something was awfully wrong… Li Dongyuan was obviously using the stall to his right, so why were the knocking sounds coming from his left?

“Yu Linlin.” Li Dongyuan’s voice sounded from the other side, “Are there any words on the walls?”

Lin Qiushi was rather taken aback after he heard that. He soon realized there, indeed, were a few rows of words written on the wall. After reading the words carefully, the hairs on Lin Qiushi’s back immediately stood on end. ...

And the final line of these lyrics was the forbidden sentence that should never be sung: 'My legs are gone, so won’t you give me yours?'

“Do you see them?” Li Dongyuan wondered.

you know, i am feral for futuristic sci-fi media wherein there's always this part of society that calls itself eden or garden of eden that presents itself as this utopia (but only a select part of this society is allowed in or really, it's just a fancy prison) and how at some point in the story, it is burned to the ground and usually by those who built it in the first place

i mean, there's more to it than just the gratifying feeling of burning and destroying a false paradise but also the absolute heresy in calling it eden only for it to be the complete opposite of what it should/used to represent

(there's really more to it that makes me go ape shit about this trope in media but unfortunately i currently cannot slap the words together nor can i make them coherent, so have this for now)

AHHHHH YES YES YES!!! i first have to admit that the post i made is just me playing the devil's advocate with the angst of "the horrifying thought of being loved only because you used to be this person" trope

not only does it show how unconditional love can be but also how it is not as simple as the initial belief is! (re: loved only because you used to be this person)

that love isn't an inheritance in which it does or does not get passed on to the next version

imo, wouldn't it be an insult to both the current and past mcs for xavier to love them as if they're one and the same?

we all know how love is a choice made over and over again, right? well, by the same token, love has to be learned and relearned despite their familiarity, that's how it becomes unconditional

been seeing a lot of the "let's not forget that xavier is actually in love with queen mc and not us/present mc" comments and now it's making me think if that's true, then it also must be true for the other two, right?

like, all three of them are not actually in love with the present mc but only who she used to be

which, if true, is now leading me to think that none of the three are actually the mc's endgame 🥹

on one hand, that's kind of expected considering that's the dilemma with reincarnations & immortals (does the one who remember actually love the person standing in front of them? or are they in love with a fleshed-out memory? after all, when a person comes back, they come back wrong)
