I’m elated to tell you that my 9th studio album, and folklore’s sister record, will be out tonight at midnight eastern. It’s called evermore. To put it plainly, we just couldn’t stop writing songs. To try and put it more poetically, it feels like we were standing on the edge of the folklorian woods and had a choice: to turn and go back or to travel further into the forest of this music. We chose to wander deeper in. I’ve never done this before. In the past I’ve always treated albums as one-off eras and moved onto planning the next one after an album was released. There was something different with folklore. In making it, I felt less like I was departing and more like I was returning. I loved the escapism I found in these imaginary/not imaginary tales. I loved the ways you welcomed the dreamscapes and tragedies and epic tales of love lost and found into your lives. So I just kept writing them. And I loved creating these songs with Aaron Dessner, Jack Antonoff, WB, and Justin Vernon. We’ve also welcomed some new (and longtime) friends to our musical kitchen table this time around…

times Doctor Who was racist towards Martha Jones

* Ten takes Martha to 1599. She asks him "am I alright, I'm not going to get carted off as a slave, am I? I'm not exactly white in case you hadn't noticed." He tells her "I'm not even human, just walk around like you own the place, works for me." Ten is an entire white man in a suit.

* Ten & Martha get trapped in 1969, while he works on sciency-y stuff at home she has to get a full-time job to provide for them, a 21st century upper class doctor working for 3 months as a black shopgirl in 1969.

* Ten & Martha get trapped in 1913, they both work at a boarding school for months but he's a professor while she's a maid and has to enter through the servants door.

* Ten has amnesia, she watches him fall in love with a blonde white woman (Joan) with misogynoir. "Women might train to be doctors but hardly a skivvy and hardly one of your color." Martha recites the names of bones in the hand. "You read that in a book." Yeah, in medical school.

* Martha travels the earth alone for a year during an apocalypse that exterminated billions of humans. Sometimes she was the only in a city to get out alive, constantly on the run to escape abduction & assassination attempts, giving gospel to everyone she comes across about the amazing savior Ten (doesn't appreciate her, negatively compares her to his blonde white ex Rose), while her family are held hostage as slaves, all so Ten can tap into a global neural link.

It’s not because it’s fun, and God knows, it’s not because it’s easy. It’s not even because it works, because it hardly ever does. I do what I do, because it’s right! Because it’s decent! And above all, it’s kind. It’s just that. Just kind. If I run away today, good people will die. If I stand and fight, some of them might live. Maybe not many, maybe not for long. Hey, you know, maybe there’s no point in any of this at all, but it’s the best I can do, so I’m going to do it. And I will stand here doing it till it kills me. You’re going to die too, some day. How will that be? Have you thought about it? What would you die for? Who I am is where I stand. Where I stand, is where I fall. Stand with me. These people are terrified. Maybe we can help, a little. Why not, just at the end, just be kind?
