Writing advice from my uni teachers:

If your dialog feels flat, rewrite the scene pretending the characters cannot at any cost say exactly what they mean. No one says “I’m mad” but they can say it in 100 other ways.

Wrote a chapter but you dislike it? Rewrite it again from memory. That way you’re only remembering the main parts and can fill in extra details. My teacher who was a playwright literally writes every single script twice because of this.

Don’t overuse metaphors, or they lose their potency. Limit yourself.

Before you write your novel, write a page of anything from your characters POV so you can get their voice right. Do this for every main character introduced.

ever have a passing comment someone said to you lodge in your mind and start to fester like a splinter you can't dig out?

in this case it's my best friend telling me, during our last phone call: "I met someone, and I wasn't sure if I should tell you... I know how hard things have been and I didn't want to be a source of more shittiness in your life."

#yeah I'm bent out of shape about this on so many levels #i genuinely appreciate the consideration and care #but simultaneously feel weirdly condescended-to #and resentful! #because guess who's been even more unavailable lately as a result of this! #anyway. i am sad and angry and generally in my feelings #i wish it weren't so obvious when my friends in relationships were putting me on/ taking me off the proverbial shelf #it does not feel good #i fact i hate it #anxious but very glad that i'll be going on a big trip for most of june #post-spring semester depression and crashing and stewing in my thoughts is always one of the hardest parts of my year in a strange way #plus i've restarted emdr now that my exams are done #if you've any good thoughts to spare... i'd love em
