Best of 2019: McDonald’s India Opened Its 300th Restaurant
It was a great year for Hardcastle Restaurants owned McDonald’s India (West & South). Of course like every other company, there were ups and downs. There were a few learnings. There were milestones achieved and some little disappointments McDonald’s India aims not to have again. But overall, it was a great, fantastic year. Here are a few things we are proud of, that happened this year.
McDonald’s India (South & West), owned by Hardcastle, opened its 300th restaurant in India
McDonald’s India opened its 300th store at the landmark location of Churchgate Mumbai! It’s an EOTF restaurant featuring self-order kiosks, wireless chargers, LED lighting among other things. The restaurant, of course, has a McCafe outlet where one can order espresso-based beverages like Cappuccino, good old Latte, Americano, Frappe and desserts like Blueberry Cheesecake, Chocolate Chip Muffin, Chocolate Express Cake, Marble cake, etc. The desserts are not just good to taste, but very pocket-friendly as well. And the economical prices by no means mean that the quality has been compromised in any way. You will love the desserts and come back for more. Also, the coffee at McCafe is handcrafted, which means it is freshly made by expert baristas for every order.
Hardcastle Restaurant was featured in GPTW list
Like many years before 2019, McDonald’s India has been named as a great place to work in India again. The reasons behind this mention in GPTW now and then are many. For example, McDonald’s India gives their employees freedom to work and study at the same time. You can work part-time and attend your college or study a distance learning course. If you want to grow, you can take online courses at McDonald’s as well. The seniors are encouraged to groom their juniors on the floor to grow their skills and be ready for more responsibilities with time. The newcomers are encouraged to ask questions and learn every day. If you are willing to put in hard work and learn from seniors, there is no way you can’t get that promotion at McDonald’s.
McDonald’s India Menu has gone healthier
Yes, you heard that right. Mcdonald’s India has launched whole wheat buns that are healthier than white buns. All you need to do is to mention at the counter while placing order that you want to go for the whole wheat option. When you think about it, with whole wheat buns, and grilled patties that do not contain any artificial colors and preservatives, McDonald’s burgers are one of the most healthy options you have when it comes to eating out or ordering in. And in case you didn’t know already, the McSpicy Paneer Wrap and McSpicy Chicken Wrap which are so tasty and filling, even they now have a whole wheat roti or tortilla or whatever you call it.
McDonald’s India Burger Price Remains The Same
With all the new EOTF restaurants with good looking décor, the prices of McDonald’s burgers almost remain the same. This means you can order McDonald’s food for your entire family without worrying about the high cost. If you are one of those who almost go broke towards the end of every month, McDonald’s India even has “end-of-the-month offers to make sure you eat tasty, healthy food within a budget. And to make the most of your monthly McDonald’s budget, you should download the McDonald’s app today. It has all the offers you need while placing orders while you are at the McDonald’s restaurant. Don’t forget to select McDonald’s India (West & South) while downloading.
 Happy eating at McDonald’s!

Five Mcdonald’s India Menu Items That You Can’t Ignore
We all know what McDonald’s is. We all have been there, tried their burgers and fries. Recently, a friend did a little survey to see what are the most popular menu items at McDonald’s and understand the reasons behind it. Before we get into the details, she realized that a few things were governing the popularity of these menu items.
McDonald’s India Burger Price
First of all, who would have thought of a burger priced at Rs 20, now 30 or whatever. It is damn cheap and you can’t ignore the fact that most people look for value for their money. They may end up going to a place a lot, but once they realize a food item is not worth its price, they start frequenting the place a lot less.
McDonald’s India Menu Itself
Let’s take a two minutes’ silence for those who still believe that McDonald’s is just for burgers and maybe fries. Well, they couldn’t be more wrong. You get wraps, you get breakfast muffins, hotcakes, Pizza McMuffins, desserts like McSwirls, and McCafe items like Chocolate Express Cake, Blueberry cake, Chocolate Chip Muffin, great coffee…….
Now let’s move on to the most popular items that you really really can’t ignore…
McDonald’s India’s exclusive McAloo Tikki Burger
No McDonald’s India list can ever be complete without a McAloo Tikki Burger. Like ever. This was the burger that Indianised the concept of burgers and familiarized the brand McDonald’s to Indian households. The Aloo Tikki is as Indian as can be. With tomato mayo and veggies like onions and tomatoes, this burger tastes like nothing you have ever tasted. And it is so cheap! Pizza McPuff
Have you ever craved for pizza but don’t want to have an entire pizza because you are watching your diet. Or maybe all you want is a snack. Nothing. Pizza Mcpuff is what you need. It has cheese and vegetables and tomato sauce, loads of it….You will taste pizza..and it will be good our friend promises Spicy Paneer Wrap
These days, every third food store is selling wraps. It is popular because it is easy to eat. You can easily eat it on the go without making a mess. You don’t even need cutlery. All you need is a foil or a solid paper to just hold it while you go about doing whatever you plan to do. Now if there are so many wrap options in the market, why would anyone buy a wra[p from a burger place like McDonald’s?????
Aren’t they known just for burgers???? Well, try the Spicy paneer wrap at McDonald’s or the Spicy Chicken Wrap if you are a non-vegetarian. The Paneer is coated in a spicy batter that will be so enjoyed by people who don’t mind some spice. To cool off the heat of the spices, the wrap feature iceberg lettuce and mayo…and we suggest you order a regular or large Coke as well. Just in case.
Veg Maharaja Mac
For the longest time, McDonald’s India offered only Chicken maharaja mac. And that was kinda sad. The vegetarians also would have loved a big burger. Two years back, the Veg Maharaja Mac was introduced and of course, the expectations were high because the Chicken Maharaja Mac was loved not only be Indian customers but even global customers who traveled to India and went to a McDonald’s outlet to get a taste of home.
The Veg maharaja Mac did not disappoint at all. With a corn and cheese double patty and double buns, it is just perfect a lunch or dinner option. It is by no means just a snack…unless you are like super hungry in the evening.

McDonald’s Revolutionary Step Towards Sustainability: Biodiesel Produced From Used Cooking Oil
McDonald’s has taken a revolutionary step towards sustainability by becoming the first ever quick service restaurant to recycle the used cooking oil to produce biodiesel which is later used to fuel their trucks. The company is taking aggressive steps towards environmental consciousness and has recently come up with various changes, most significant of which was this.
The Hardcastle Restaurants Private Limited (HRPL) is McDonald’s master franchisee in the west and south India has confirmed that they are committed to convert 4.5 lakh liters of cooking oil annually into biodiesel. The oil is used to power 20 o 25 trucks of the company that makes trips to more than 275 restaurants across the region carrying supplies from the distribution centers. The director of national supply chain and quality assurance, Vikram Ogale confirmed this on Monday.
Tumblr media
The initiative was started a year ago on a pilot basis in Mumbai and has scaled since then and now it is a full-fledged operation. More than half the stores are involved in the process and the target is to meet 275 restaurants of McDonald’s (West & South).
This is a big plan because to meet the target of 275 restaurants McDonald’s India will have to increase production by 67% to 7.5 lakh liters in a year. This will mean addition of another 20 to 25 trucks could be added to the service. In the long term the company plans to scale up the initiative to up to 500 stores in the next four years in both west and south region of India, considering the production of biodiesel also increases consequently.
Further talking about the sustainability project, Ogale mentioned that the company is working towards a partnership with local player called Unicom Biofuels who are in the business of converting cooking oil into biodiesel. He said that the company has been working with them since the past one year in the initiative. The investment going into the process is not yet been discussed, however adding the initiative in their distribution channel.
This can prove to be a revolutionary initiative, since it has the potential to pull in other big players in the restaurant industry to follow suit. As the need to protect is growing and the ethos of a company is judged on their responsibility towards the environment, the initiative can prove to be extremely helpful.
Meanwhile, the company has also ramped up their efforts to reduce the consumption of plastic in their restaurants in Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra, after the ban of plastic in the region. The effort was done by introducing paper containers, straws and plates and also glass bottles and steel lunch boxes.
In the recent years McDonald’s has upped their ante on multiple sustainable initiatives in the country by introducing sourcing fresh food straight from the farms as well as reducing sodium in salt, saturated fat and oil on its menu.
This effort of biofuel comes from the global target of McDonald’s which includes the plans to reduce the lowering carbon emissions per metric tonne of food and packaging by 31% by 2030.

McDonald’s Targets Major Expansion of 500 Outlets by 2022
McDonald’s India has been serving quality food to their customers since it first entered India 22 years ago in 1996. Whipping up burgers both traditionally tuned to suit Indian palates, such as McAloo Tikki and Dosa Masala Brioche, as well as classics such as the Fillet-o-Fish burger, McDonald’s has come a long way in establishing itself as a prominent restaurant chain in India. While it entered India with a stellar reputation, many doubted the burger stalwarts’ chances in persuading the uniquely attuned tastebuds of Indians. You see, a vast majority of Indians are non-vegetarian, and even those that are usually do not consume anything other than eggs and poultry meat. Hence, McDonald’s had to tip the odds in their favour by not only dropping their signature Big Mac, but also improvising their menu items.
Tumblr media
Today, McDonald’s South and West recorded a total sales growth of 35%, and that has led Vice Chairman of Westlife Development Ltd., Amit Jatia to set his plans for expansion of the franchise in motion. A recent interview conducted by DNA India, Mr. Jatia discussed the QSR (Quick Serving Restaurants) market scenario and challenges faced, and the management approach adopted by the company to overcome these challenges. Notably, the price hike of crude oil and cooking oil
Last quarter, despite rising inflation rates, McDonald’s and Westlife Development Ltd enjoyed a good phase, which led to further development plans. The company has adopted a robust cost rationalization plan, which has worked wonders and delivered solid results. The March quarter experienced a sudden spurt when same store sales growth grew 25.1% to effectively doubling the revenue at Rs.28 crore.
Amit Jatia discussed his target of reaching 400—500 McDonald’s restaurants by the end of the fiscal year 2022. This will see a rise not just in the number of restaurants, but also in locations, as there have been plans to target new cities and towns in West and South India. Most recently, McDonald’s opened their first eatery at Pondicherry, in one of the most prominent malls in the town. Pondicherry welcomes a fair amount of tourists and travellers from across the globe, and it wouldn’t hurt for them to have access to some universally loved food from time to time. Rest assured McDonald’s expansions plans in West and South India will not solely be limited to the solitary branch in Pondicherry, but certain other towns with exciting prospects are also being considered.
Throughout their history, McDonald’s are known to make the most of every occasion, and believes in a proactive approach which involves their customers. Most recently, they launched a special plan to make the most of the ongoing FIFA Football World Cup 2018 held in Russia, by not only holding screenings for every match from the knockout stages, but also offering a number of attractive prizes for those who order a McSaver combo, and use their chicken-fuelled intuition and analytical prowess to determine the winner of any ongoing World Cup fixture being played out at the time.

McDonalds to Discontinue Use of All Preservatives
The evolving needs of a constantly increasing consumer base need to be continuously evaluated and acted upon. While simply establishing a fast food chain can be considered to be an ample yardstick for success, what is a true test of mettle is to not only establish success but also manage to stay relevant in the game. McDonald’s however, have taken it a notch higher by not only having done both of the aforementioned quantifiers, but also have the pride of being a chief innovator in the fast food industry. Innovation is often the solution to cater to the needs of an expanding consumer base, but there’s a bit more than just that to it.
Tumblr media
Another factor that plays a key part, especially in the era of instant digital access, is the acknowledgement that the customer will want a sustainable option, especially when it comes to food. The presence of artificial preservatives, and ingredients such as monosodium glutamate, are factors that today’s health-conscious customer assigns considerable weightage to. McDonald’s India (South and West) have come up with a brand new initiative that assures that no products of McDonald’s will contain preservatives, artificial colours. The ingenuity extends further with a statement that food items will contain dietary fibres. Let’s take a look at how these changes are going to be implemented.
No preservatives: Preservatives are widely used by food, beverage, pharmaceutical, paint, furniture, and cosmetic industries, among several others. In the food industry, its primary purpose is to retain the original flavour and appearance of the item, as well as it ensure it looks aesthetic when consumed.
No artificial colours: The addition of artificial colours may make food look more appealing, but rest assured it is hardly food anymore. McDonalds’ has a strict no artificial colours policy. Artificially coloured edibles are popular all around the country, from everything to vegetables to gourmet dishes. Artificial colouring contains many harmful chemicals that have an adverse effect on our systems.
Dietary Fibres: You must have sudden flashes of your childhood, in which your parents force you to eat your greens because it’s full of fibres. Well, there is no need for force – your favourite McDonalds’ items now come with added dietary fibres, which, as the name suggests, aid in your digestion. Now you can appease your mother as well as your taste buds.

Here’s Why You Can’t Get Enough Of McDonald’s Soft Serve
A perfect meal always ends with something sweet but a truly awesome meal also starts with desserts. No matter how full you are with your meal, they say that there is always room left for desserts. That is our love for the sweet delicacies that we can die for. McDonald’s has a range of offerings to satiate our sweet tooth but nothing beats the sweet simple soft serve. Put it in a crunchy cone or in a tiny plastic cup; drip it down with strawberry or chocolate or whatever flavor that the season offers; they are a bliss from the first bite you take.
Just like any other great innovations at the iconic restaurant chain, the invention of soft serve was also just another accident. Only difference is that this literally was an accident. So, this is how the story goes. On the Memorial Day weekend of 1934 Tom Carvel, an ice cream truck driver got a flat tire. And to prevent the loss of all the ice cream in his trailer that would melt in the heat, he started to quickly sell his half melted ice creams. To his surprise, people loved it. Thus began Carvel’s work on coming up with a formula to make ice creams smoother and softer. So, he was able to build a business of his own and was doing pretty well.
And if you think that is interesting, you will be glad to know that it is not the only fact about soft serve, in fact we have four more interesting facts about McDonald’s soft serve that you will love to now.
Tumblr media
 No Brain Freeze
What is the worst thing about having ice cream? Well, it is pointless to wreck your brain over it because it’s already frozen, or is it not? Well, that is not the worst but a very unpleasant feeling when for a moment you can’t feel your jaws and it feels like your head is going to explode after you eagerly take a huge bite of your favourite ice cream. It’s like your best friend hit you in the gut. But the good news is that soft serve never does that to you. No brain freezes and that is what McD’s promises when they hand you the delicious cone of softy.
Less fat
I know it is just wrong to count calories while having ice cream. It is like breaking the sanctity of this delicious dessert. But to save yourself from the guilt that you have after finishing a bucket full of chocolaty goodness, we would like to tell you that your favourite softy only has 3.5 % fat. I know it’s still enough to tip off a fitness freak but it is substantially lesser than other ice creams.
Made of pure milk
Now, we don’t want you to feel bad but those huge bricks of ice creams that you have stored inside your freezer are usually made out of vegetable oil. But not softy, these are in fact made out of pure milk and that is what makes them so smooth and soft.
Oh So Versatile!
With more than 200 ways to serve softy at McDonald’s these sweet, cool goodness are extremely versatile.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and there’s no debating that. Every nutritionist you ever meet will tell you that. So you know the importance of eating a good and wholesome breakfast but the questing is– how much do you follow through?

And having the boring old cereal every day is just as boring as it can be. So, what do we do? We come up with thousands of excuses to cover up the inability to start off the day in a perfect manner.
Tumblr media
