Artist: SilentBerry Gift for: delilahhyuuga Promt: 1. Moving house (become neighbors or moving in together), 2. Sitting in a cafe next to each other without knowing who the other in real life, 3. Finding each other like the way Misa finds Light (stalking, disguise,...) Artist's note: I chose the second sentence. It looks like a pretty good AU and I like it.
The idea was that Mello and Near met in a cafe under their real names, but at the same time Near tried to send Mello behind bars, while Mello tried to kill Near. Of course, they had no idea what their enemy was before them.
Hope I satisfied you (and correctly understood and portrayed what you promt.).

Author: chocolate-explosives Gift for: @daydammayhem Prompt: Number 2 Fantasy AU with a bit of number 3 Wammy’s Era mixed in Author’s Notes: AUs are fun! So I went in and made Wammy’s House a school for magical orphans. I hope you enjoy it, I had a lot of fun writing it.
Despite the name, Wammy’s Orphanage for Extraordinary Children functioned mostly like a normal orphanage. Students spent weekdays in class, evenings either doing homework or ignoring said homework, and weekends frantically trying to complete that five-page essay that simply doesn’t wish to be written. There were practical classes like chemistry and biology that required them to go out and collect samples, mathematics and English that focused on theory work, and electives such as art and music. Exam season was rough and students lost sleep, and in the end, there was a leader board that proudly displayed who was the most accomplished student. No need to reinvent the wheel just because students happened to have some variety of magical powers. Just cram those extra lessons in there, it’s fine.
Being half siren among a number of pubescent teens might have given Mello an unfair advantage. Usually, he would just have to wink to get in somebody’s head. A little flirting, a little smile, and suddenly, any and all attempts to focus were completely ruined. Was it fair? No. Did fairness matter to him? Nope.
But he didn’t use it to get ahead. Mello didn’t charm teachers or peers, and anyone too young was immune. He didn’t want to cheat. Mello was a clever and confident young mage, easily harnessing elements and turning the natural into the supernatural. He didn’t need to use his charm to get ahead of the other students. Sure, it was funny to watch someone turn a simple potion into a fountain of angry lobsters, but Mello didn’t need to bring someone down just for the marks. There was no need to boost himself by cheating, especially when he’d get pulled up immediately for it.
Besides the fact, the only person worth beating didn’t seem affected. Or maybe the sight of him made Mello so sick that he couldn’t properly dole out the charm. That was Matt’s more joking theory, but Mello had to admit there was some credit to it. That person made him feel almost dizzy.
Near. The awkward, too-pale, too-quiet changeling child. Maybe that had something to do with why Mello couldn’t charm him. Near was a fae creation, purposefully designed to mimic humanity while causing as much trouble to those around him as possible. Most people thought that a puppet like him couldn’t possibly be the next top student, couldn’t become apprenticed to L himself. It simply wasn’t right!
The air around Mello crackled at the thought of the boy standing between he and his victory. Was it not enough to fight for it, to lose sleep studying, to practice until he couldn’t see straight and his legs gave out? What did Near have that Mello didn’t? Mello was brilliant. He came from a long line of magic. He’d conjured fire at just six and summoned small lindwurms long before they were even taught in class. Why was he the still second place to the boy who couldn’t even look him in the eye?
“Mello! Your papers are on fire again!” the teacher scolded. Mello looked down at the burning notebook in his hand and scowled fiercely. He put the fire out and shuffled his papers, making sure he hadn’t lost any valuable notes. A few letters at the edge of the page, but not much more.
As the teacher turned around, a slip of paper met Mello’s elbow. He unfolded it and scanned the message from Matt.
‘Something on your mind?’ Matt asked, followed by a doodle of Mello’s head on fire. Mello rolled his eyes, grabbing a pencil to write back.
‘Take a guess’ Mello replied, scribbling a crude picture of Near with black sockets for eyes. It was an old, clumsy visual clue put in images of changeling children. Mello passed the note back, neatly copying the notes the teacher was writing on the chalkboard. Some students used enchanted pens or quills, but Mello found a certain satisfaction in writing things out for himself.
‘You know the old myth about heart magic’ was Matt’s response. Mello turned his head to glare at Matt, crumpling the paper in his fist for emphasis. Matt shook his head, grinning to himself. Mello had to uncrumple the paper to respond, so maybe that had something to do with Matt’s jeering attitude.
‘Just because I’m setting things on fire without meaning to does not mean I like Near. If anything it means the exact opposite.’
‘Methinks you doth protest too much.’
‘Methinks you doth seeketh a blackened eye.’
Matt grinned, glancing at Mello for a moment before back at his paper. Mello scowled at him for a long moment, until Matt’s cheeky grin won out. He rolled his eyes and focused on his paper again, suppressing a smirk of his own.
Second place again. Mello’s hair whipped around his head as he glared at the board. Other students crowded around Near, only rubbing in the shame of the moment. His icy blue eyes flicked over, watching as everyone huddled around Near, complimenting him, bolstering him. That should be Mello!
“Oh, dude, I flunked,” Matt groaned, gesturing to his own mark. “Twenty third? Might as well take me off the board at that point.”
“Hey, drama queen, do you mind letting the rest of us see?”
Mello twisted around, eyelids pulled back to a disturbing degree. The student behind him rolled her eyes, shoving past them both. She yelped, clutching the hand she’d used to shove them dramatically.
“Professor! Mello shocked me!” she accused as Mello rubbed his own shoulder.
“Deirdre, static exists, not everyone is out to get you,” the professor reminded her, gently guiding Mello and Matt away from the board. He pats Mello on the shoulder, then turns to join the crowd. Deirdre glares at his back for a moment, but shortly after begins to crowd around Near as well. That was what made Mello’s stomach drop out. He backed out of the classroom, just out of the door, before turning to run.
It hurt. It hurt so goddamn much, knowing that what he craved was just out of his grasp. Mello almost tripped over himself as he fled the classrooms. He could hear Matt’s own footsteps clomping against the wooden floors, but Mello’s always been faster. He lost his friend in the winding halls of the Wammy House.
How ironic, running away when it was attention that he was striving for.
Mello hated living in Near’s shadow while the changeling stood facing the sun. It was painful! He’d earned it, hadn’t he? And that little… That rotten…
It was the closet right outside the library that Mello finally hid inside. He curled up deep in the back of the little room, under shelves and behind the bone-dry bucket. Tiny, hidden, and in such a suitable place.
Truthfully, Mello never hated Near. Not personally. He hated being second, being ignored, being put to one side. He hated what Near represented. He truly, honestly did hate being in Near’s shadow.
He wanted Near to look at him.
Though he wasn’t sure when he fell asleep, Mello found himself waking up in the dusty closet with something warm curled around one of his arms. He looked down and shifted, causing a faint croon from the creature. A Light lindwurm, whiskers glowing softly as it looked up at Mello. Had he summoned in his sleep now? Mello sighed, rubbing a fingertip over the serpentine creature’s brow. It let out a happy coo, pressing up against Mello’s touch.
The door opened. Mello covered the creature’s head with his hand, but it was of no use. Upon seeing the subtly glowing nails that hovered in the air, Mello knew he hadn’t summoned the lindwurm.
Near.
He closed the door behind him, crouching down and holding out his hand. Almost immediately, the lindwurm wiggled past Mello’s guarding hand and floated over to Near. He was… Smiling. Mello had never seen such a mild expression on Near’s face, usually twisted into some exaggerated caricature of human emotion. This was real, almost tender.
When Near lifted his eyes to meet Mello’s, the blond didn’t feel the need to pull away. Even with everything that he had carefully built up, everything he had made into a perfect, furious persona at stake. Mello watched over the bucket, mouth dry, fingers trembling.
“I’ve always had trouble summoning,” Near murmured, finally breaking the silence. Mello nodded. It was the one thing he consistently did better than Near. Something that changelings simply couldn’t grasp the way whole creatures did. Summoned creatures were more reluctant to appear, less obedient, more likely to fail in their tasks than when a whole being summoned one. Part of what the changelings lacked made matters of heart difficult for them.
“But, when I needed to find you, I had no trouble.”
Mello felt something in him skip. Near lowered his gaze at last, looking to the lindwurm. He whispered to it, gently stroking its head before sending it away. The lindwurm faded away and left the pair alone in the closet. Near carefully picked his way around the room, finally settling close to Mello. He crouched down, watching Mello’s face carefully.
“Mello… Would you let me do something a little bit… oh, maybe a little bit strange?” Near’s gaze only wavered as he considered the words he was looking for. His full attention was on Mello, and it made the blond’s heart flutter a little bit. As much as his sense screamed for Mello to at least ask what it was, he didn’t want to say a word. Did Near have him under a spell?
He nodded.
The soft smile returned to Near’s features when Mello gave him that confirmation. He shifted, rising a little onto his knees, and moved closer. Mello realised he was holding his breath and forced himself to exhale a little through his nose, eyelids closing reflexively. Near’s supple, cool lips pressed against the corner of Mello’s mouth. It was brief, almost a whisper of a touch, before Near tried to pull away. Mello reacted suddenly, grasping Near’s shoulder to keep him in place so he could properly kiss him. Near let out a faint gasp, eyelids fluttering shut at last. Mello melted, pressing himself deep into the kiss and relaxing his grip on Near’s arm. One pale hand rose to cup Mello’s cheek, keeping him close even as they separated. Mello was panting, even though they hadn’t kissed for long or done anything too dramatic. The moment had simply left him breathless.
“Don’t leave,” he whispered, gently squeezing Near’s arm. “Don’t leave me. Don’t stop looking at me.” The words were almost theatrical, but the changeling understood.
“Never,” he murmured back, thumb tracing back and forth over Mello’s cheekbone. Mello tilted his head forward and sighed, breath warm on Near’s shirt. Near shifted, wrapping his arms around Mello to pull him close. The blond melted once again, leaning on Near and wrapping his own arms loosely around his waist.
The door opened. Mello’s hair almost whipped Near in the face as he looked up, but it was only Matt. The brunette blinked a couple of times before an ‘I told you so’ grin formed on his lips. He shook his head, forcing himself to relax and smile more sincerely.
“You’ve been gone an hour, Mello. Professors are thinking you ran away,” he said, making a gesture with his head to call them out of the closet. “C’mon, before you both end up in trouble.”
Near nodded, separating from Mello and rising to his feet. He dusted off his knees, then looked at Mello. Waiting for him. Here, alone with Matt and now with Near, Mello didn’t feel the need to hide the hint of a smile from his face.
“I hope Mello’s words were at least partially metaphorical,” Near said as Mello rose to his feet. “I would like to be able to read some of the time.”
Mello laughed.

Prompt: AU/Adopting a pet
Author’s Notes: I had a lot of fun writing this and I hope everyone enjoys it! ^^ I’m sorry that it’s a little short, but I hope the fluff makes up for it. Other Notes- Super-Ultra-Mega Happy Ending AU! Mello never died! He also swallowed his pride and admitted his feelings to Near! This story is set a few years into their relationship where the two are happily living together in a cute little house somewhere where no bad guys can find them. =D
Name Game
“Are you sure you want to do this?”
“I am.”
“Okay,” Mello smiled, “I’ll make the call.”
The Next Day…
“Nervous?”
“A little.”
“Do you want to hold my hand?”
“I’m not a child,” Near huffed, but entwined his fingers with Mello’s anyway, “I’m ready.”
The two walked into the building where a woman was waiting for them. Once pleasantries were exchanged, she asked them to stay put while she got something from the backroom. Near gently squeezed his partner’s hand and Mello squeezed his in turn. The woman came back with a medium sized box with three holes cut into each side. She started to give the package to Mello, but stopped when Near reached up for it and handed it to him instead with a soft smile. He held it tightly, but not too tight.
“We greatly appreciate your patronage,” the woman beamed, “Is there anything else I can help you with?”
“No, we’re good.”
“Then I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day.”
The two returned the sentiment before heading back to the car.
The ride home was mostly silent, Mello driving while Near cradled the box in his lap. Occasionally the box made a sound, which Near tried to quiet with gentle reassurances.
“Shhhhhh…It’s okay. We’ll be there soon.” He caught Mello watching him out of the corner of his eye, a smirk on his face. “What?”
“Nothing.”
They reached their home and went inside. Near set the box on its side in the middle of the living room floor and lifted the tabs of the former top halves. Inside were two eight-week old kittens.
One had thick black fur with clear sky-blue eyes, while the other was white as snow with bright emerald eyes and a tiny pink nose. They were curled up together in the back of the box, quivering at the sight of the human before them.
“Hello, little ones,” Near held his hand palm-up a small distance away from the box, giving them plenty of space. “Do you remember us?”
The pair had first discovered the kittens at the shelter about a month before, and had made two other visits since then. They had originally planned to only adopt one cat, but when the woman working there told them that the babies were orphans that couldn’t stand to be away from each other, they immediately knew what they had to do.
“How are they doing? Not too scared, are they?” Mello joined him on the floor with small trays of water and wet-food, placing them next to the box.
“No, they just need time to adjust.”
Slowly, the black kitten began to poke her head out, sniffing Near’s hand cautiously before headbutting it with gusto.
“Seems she remembers you,” Mello chuckled. Near merely hummed in agreement, too wrapped up in petting the small creature. For a few seconds, Mello just watched the two begin to play, until he was interrupted by a tiny squeak. He turned at the noise and found the white kitten halfway out of the box and staring up at him with wide eyes. “Hey, sweetheart.”
“Mew.”
He offered her his hand to inspect the same way Near had with her sister. She didn’t even sniff it, rubbing herself against his fingers right away before coming closer and placing her front paws on Mello’s knee.
“You want up?”
“Mew!” The kitten hopped onto Mello’s lap and started to climb up his shirt. “Mew!”
“Okay, okay!” The blonde laughed as he picked her up and cradled her to his chest, cooing at the cat, but glancing at Near. “You’re lucky I have a soft-spot for pale, cuddle-hungry fluffballs.”
The aforementioned fluffball playfully glared at Mello before letting his own kitten climb up the sleeve of his white pajama-top and eventually on top of his head, where she perched there, purring in what almost sounded like victory.
“Well, Mellanie is lucky that I have a soft spot for loud, flamboyant troublemakers.”
Mello gaped at the other.
“…Mellanie? Seriously?”
“Quite,” Near smirked, plucking the kitten out of his hair, “I think it suits her. Wouldn’t you agree, Mellanie?”
“Mrah!”
“See? She thinks so.”
There was a beat of silence before Mello decided that two can play at this game.
“Alright, then this little gal’s name is gonna be…” He thought for second before looking to the kitten in his arms. “How does ‘Nora’ sound to you, sweetie?”
“Mew.”
“Perfect! ‘Nora’ it is!”
The rest of the day was spent playing with and watching over the two newest editions to Keehl-River family. By late evening, Mello was cuddling with Near on the couch, watching the steady breathing of Mellanie and Nora who were sound asleep on top of their new cat tower.
“I love you,” Mello mumbled into the younger man’s curls, “I know I don’t say it enough, but I do.”
“I know,” Near pressed a soft kiss to his cheek…then another…and another. “I love you too.”
It stayed that way for a few more minutes, the two of them basking in the peacefulness of the moment while murmuring adoring words to each other with every kiss. Eventually, Near let out an adorable, soundless yawn.
“Tired?”
“Mmm…”
Mello gave a soft laugh, pulling Near up with him.
“Come on, time for bed.” Near merely whined and leaned into him, wrapping his arms around the taller one’s neck, causing the blonde to roll his eyes. “Fine…”
Mello picked Near up and carried him to their bedroom, pretending to make a bit of a fuss about it, but they both knew he loved it. Once they were nestled in bed, they whispered to each other, almost in unison,
“Goodnight, kitten.”
