And the Bells Were Ringing Out on Megmas Day - Holiday 2023
A while ago one of my best friends sent me a text:
I noodled on this for a while, made lists and everything. A few months later I replied with:
(Yes, these are the kinds of conversations you can have with me if you have my contact info).
Anyway, if you're familiar to the Megmas back catalogue, you know that Fairytale of New York has been a long time staple of these mixes, both the original and a ton of great covers. With the passing of Shane MacGowan this year, I couldn't help but pay tribute to one of the best punk songs and one of the best holiday songs of all time––uncomfortable language and all. And so, the title of this year's mix is from the chorus of Fairytale of New York. And the album art is a slight nod to the album cover for the single.
I thought about putting a cover or live version of Fairytale of New York on this mix, but in the end, I decided to just go with the original. And, in a wonderful stroke of luck, one of the other songs on this mix references the song with the line "This is the fairytale of nowhere."
This year's mix is a return to form in a lot of ways: it has more pop-punk than in recent years, more silly songs, and even a Hanukkah song! There were also so many wonderful new Christmas songs that were on my radar this year, I hardly had to dip into my unused archive.
As always I hope you enjoy the mix and share it with people who also like non-traditional holiday songs.

Just Like Megmas - Holiday 2022
A three year streak with the return of the quasi-annual Megmas mixes, making this the 15th mix!
This year I spent a lot of time digging for deep cuts,* revisiting old classics that haven't ever made it onto a mix, and going back and forth on using the cover vs the original on a few of these tracks (Silversun Pickups and Phoebe Bridgers to name a few). And of course, there are one or two just silly songs because what would a Megmas mix be without those.
Over the years, I've realized that Low's "Just Like Christmas" has become one of my all time favorite Christmas songs (this year marks the 3rd cover to appear on a megmas mix). As I was thinking of names for this year's mix, it just seemed like the right thing for 2022 where the world is sort of, a little bit, starting to feel normal again; and at least for me, things are starting to feel just like christmas in ways they haven't in a while.
*I will say the one downside to a spotify only release is that I can't get the super deep cuts, or the random tv and movie quotes that used to be on the CD releases of Megmas past.

A Megmas Gift for You -- Holiday 2021
And we're back with the 14th quasi-annual Megmas mix.
Back in the day, I used to burn these on CDs and post them to everyone, and then I moved to sending everyone files with an attached playlist. The thing I miss about those mixes is that I was able to include really random music, super indie stuff, and clips from other media.
This is the second year I've done a Spotify only release, and I'm still pretty happy with the tracks I've put together. And for some reason I have an equal mix of "I miss you" and "fuck you" tracks, and that just feels very 2021 to me.

It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Megmiss - Holiday 2020
Well it's been a crazy few years... I got pregnant in 2016 and was too exhausted to make a mix in 2016 and then again in 2017 with a 6 month old. I then got pregnant again in 2018 and was too sick , and then too tired in 2019 with a 5 month old and a two year old to make one then. So, 2020 became my triumphant return!
As I started crafting this mix, I realized that I had so many more female artists than I've ever had, and so I decided to 86 the other potential songs and make this an all "miss" mix. And I am so pleased with how this turned out, and I hope it was worth the four year wait between mixes!

Have Yourself a Happy Little Megmas - Holiday 2015
2015 has been a crazy year. I changed jobs so that I’m vey rarely at a desk, which has been awesome, but the downside is that I’m now very rarely able to listen to music at work, which is where I usually started constructing my Megmas mixes. So, when I finally sat down to finalize the mix, I found that I had a truly epic amount of Holiday songs that I needed wade through.
I planned on calling this year’s mix “O Megmas Tree” but as I was trying to decide what to do for cover art, I thought of Bob Ross’s evergreen tree paintings (I’ve taken to watching The Joy of Painting when I get stressed). But then Husband pointed out that they would have to be happy little Megmas trees, and so the name was changed as an homage to Bob Ross and one of my favourite Christmas movies of all time “Meet Me in St. Louis.”
Fun Fact: The first band on this mix is listed as WJLP, and when I was looking them up to confirm the info, I discovered that this stands for William J. Le Petomane, the Governor from “Blazing Saddles.” amazing!

Megmas Sweater - Holiday 2014
This might be one of my favourite Megmas mixes I've ever made. I found some really amazing bands and songs. It might not flow as smoothly in some places as others, but I'm still super happy with it. I was worried that the penultimate songs were a bit of a downer, but I wasn't going to pass up a change to use a song titled "My Beer Drunk Soul is Sadder Than All the Dead Christmas Trees in the World."
Fun fact: I somehow went 10 years without having a single song about Christmas sweaters, and then suddenly I have like 5 on this mix (and actually cut at least one other one).

Megmas Xmas - Holiday 2013
Ten years, you guys. This is the 10th annual Megmas album. And what's crazier than the fact that I've been making these mixes for 10 years, is that some people out there have copies of all 10!
I really wanted to do something special for this mix, and I entertained the idea of getting the band back together to create our own cover of "Fairytale of New York" for the occasion, but things didn't work out and I ran out of time. Still, it's a good solid mix with a lot of new bands, as well as a last min addition by my favourite band: The Hold Steady.
Mostly, I am just proud of the fact that I have made this a part of my holiday traditions for so long. I see no end in sight.

Megmas List - Holiday 2012
One of my favourite things is finding clips from other media that I can use in the mixes along with awesome holiday songs. This year, we see two clips from the BBC radio comedy, Cabin Pressure's Christmas episode: Molokaʻi. This mix also has one of the best covers of all time: Zach Braff and Donald Faison singing "Baby It's Cold Outside," which, if you understand the historical context of the song, brings their bromance to epic new levels.
Fun fact: despite the fact that there is a SpongeBob song on this mix, I've never actually seen a full episode of the show.

Do They Know It's Megmas? - Holiday 2011
I have a weird obsession with the song "Do They Know It's Christmas (Feed the World)." Objectively, I know it's a horrible song for a ton of reasons. But in 2004, I was spending winter in Ireland and it was the 20 year anniversary of the song, so they had released a new version–the best official version, in my opinion (the one they released for the 30th anniversary is so beyond horrible and they tried to update it for the Ebloa virus and ugh, but I digress). Anyway, it was everywhere, and it kinda sunk in. And then I started finding really awesome covers, and it just became a staple of Megmas, so it seemed fitting to finally pay homage in the title of the mix. I also used the truly horrible art that was used for the 20th anniversary.
I am also proud of the amount of humor I was able to get into this mix: a HIMYM quote, Venture Bros., Jack Black & Jason Segel, Space Ghost! I'm awesome.

All I Want for Megmas - Holiday 2010
This mix has two of my favourite Christmas songs of all time on it: "Fairytale of New York," and "The Cold, Wild Yonder." The former is a classic–everyone knows this amazing song by The Pogues; the latter, however, is actually a Wizard Rock song, and is about Christmas during Deathly Hallows when Harry, Ron, and Hermione are on the run.
When I sent this mix out to friends, I told my bestie (a huge HP fan like myself), that there was a Wizard Rock song on the mix, and even she couldn't pick it out right away. Two years later, when I met the singer of Oliver Boyd & The Rememberalls at Leakycon and was banging on about how amazing this song is, I told him that everyone I had played this for was shocked that it was “Wizard Rock,” and he said “Well, that’s the point, isn’t it.”
Fun Fact: This mix is also notable for having the word "fuck" twice in the track listing!

The Twelve Days of Megmas - Holiday Mix 2009
One of my favourite Christmas movies OF ALL TIME is "Christmas Eve on Sesame Street" (1978). It's a gem. Everyone goes ice skating (even Oscar in his garbage can); Bert & Ernie do a "Gift of the Magi" thing with Bert's paperclip collection and Ernie's rubber ducky; Oscar tries to convince Big Bird that there is no Santa; and in my favourite plot point, Cookie Monster gets so excited writing Santa to bring him cookies, that he accidentally eats a pencil, a typewriter, and then a phone. I used one song from this before: Oscar the Grouch's "I hate Christmas" back on the 2005 mix, but the ending song, "Keep Christmas With You" was always a favourite, especially since they teach the kids how to sign along in ASL.
Looking back, I'm not sure why I used the Glee version of "Last Christmas." I don't usually choose things that mainstream... Also, I have watched a total of 25 mins of Glee and I hated every minute of it, which I think is how even fans of the show feel...
Fun Fact: Eddie Izzard's standup special "Dressed to Kill" (where the Five Gold Rings clip is from) is one of my favourite things ever. I pretty much have it memorized and quote it on a regular basis.

How The Grinch Stole Megmas - Holiday Mix 2008
I started a new job in Jan 2008 and quickly made a bunch of new, close friends (including the man who I would end up marrying), so this was the first Megmas mix that was going to be given to people outside of my older friends and college friends group. As such, there are a few repeats from previous mixes, because they were too good to not pass on to a new audience. This might have the best cover art of any Megmas mix...
Fun fact: the Gary Hoey track was suggested to me by a Jewish friend, who has little to no interest in Christmas music (aside from when I brought him to a TSO concert and we got high and stared at the lasers and flames for 2 hours.. at least I think he was at that show. I mean, I was really high and apparently afterwards I ordered a burger, ate it, then cried because I thought everyone else got their food but I didn't...I always keep it classy).

Megmas Vacation - Holiday Mix 2007
I started getting really into Mashups this year–I was going to Bootie in SF a lot–and there was a Bootie Christmas Mashup playlist, so about 3 of those mashups made their way onto this mix. Also, this is the first official appearance of TSO and Wizard Rock on a Megmas mix.

A Megmas Story - Holiday Mix 2006
I seriously debated finding a bunny suit to dress up like Ralphie for the cover of this mix... Luckily for all of us that took too much effort. This is the first mix that ends with a New Years song. There are a surprising few New Years songs, and this one is hands down my favourite.
Some people gave me shit about including Mannheim Steamroller (which appears on at least one more mix along with the most amazing HIMYM quote), but whenever I hear them, it's like an instant flashback to childhood––The Steamroller was my mom's jam!
Fun Fact: The Who's "Tommy" scares the bejesus out of me (have you seen the film?! Horrifying!), but for some reason I felt that I just HAD to use "Christmas" as a track for Megmas. I really like the songs, as long as I don't think about any clips from the film (it's similar to "The Wall" actually, but "Tommy "doesn't give me weird trippy nightmares).

The Nightmare Before Megmas - Holiday Mix 2005
This mix started an epic fight between me and my Nemesis. He said that I had mislabeled the artist for "Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24)" and that it should be Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Well, at this point in time, I had never heard of TSO. Instead, I had been rocking out to Savatage for years and knew, without a doubt, that the song was by them (I love "Dead Winter Dead" it's my favourite rock opera/concept album. Deal with it.)
This was before the days of having Wikipedia on our phones, so this argument lasted for the majority of a drive from Monterey, CA to Reno, NV in the middle of the night. In the end, it turns out we were both right. Members of Savatage would go on to form TSO mostly because of "Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24)." (And this sort of heated debate about trivial things would go on to define our relationship for the next decade).
Fun Fact: The Peter Griffin Christmas may be my favourite thing to come out of a Family Guy episode. Well, except for the obscure quote, "Three days? That's tomorrow!"

Merry Megmas - Holiday Mix 2004
The first ever Megmas Mix. This was made because I was broke but wanted to give something to my college friends. It was very last minute––I had spent all of my money on plane tickets to Ireland to stay with my then-boyfriend and his family for the Holidays, and I had about 1/2 a day between the end of classes and leaving the country. Honestly, not a lot of thought went into this mix (compared to the subsequent ones, anyway) but I was stoked to give my friends a little something for Christmas. Little did I know this would start a tradition.
As you can see, I was still in a pretty big Ska-Punk phase here, which makes for a rockin Holiday mix.
Fun Fact: I just wrote "Merry Megmas" as a whim on the CDs (there was no cover art, just green and red sharpies). The name kinda stuck...
