"Here is a lesson: do not fear ever to think. A half-thought has been buzzing often in my brain, but I fear to let him loose his wings. Here now, with more knowledge, I go back to where that half-thought come from and I find that he be no half-thought at all; that be a whole thought, though so young that he is not yet strong to use his little wings."

Orihime deserved the world
Tumblr media
The great meta-tragedy of Orihime is that her character archetype isn’t one native to Shonen manga. In terms of broad character traits (unfailingly nice, romantic, self-sacrificing, prone to self-doubt) and powerset (undefined in both capacity and limits) she’s a shojo heroine– not for nothing does she share an English VA with Sailor Moon.
But the world of Bleach isn’t made for somebody like her– the characters who do best in shonen manga are the determined type, who train really hard to surpass their evident limits, who have faith in themselves and perhaps not in humanity writ large. Ichigo, Rukia, Uryu– they all have this determination, the bitter steel that gets you through the mano-a-mano fights that serve as the basis for the genre.
So if you think Orihime deserved better…perhaps she did. Perhaps there’s a world where Bleach is a story about an ordinary teenage girl who discovers her mysterious powers and destiny, has to rescue her dark and mysterious love interest from beyond the grave, and winds up saving the whole world. But honestly, I’m a pretty big fan of the Orihime we have: she may not be the protagonist, but she’s an absolutely wonderful character who embodies the best parts of humanity that our protagonists are fighting for– even if she isn’t always doing the fighting.

"I have read of a gentleman who owned a so fine house in London, and when he went for months of summer to Switzerland and lock up his house, some burglar came and broke window at back and got in. Then he went and made open the shutters in front and walk out and in through the door, before the very eyes of the police. Then he have an auction in that house, and advertise it, and put up big notice; and when the day come he sell off by a great auctioneer all the goods of that other man who own them. Then he go to a builder, and he sell him that house, making an agreement that he pull it down and take all away within a certain time. And your police and other authority help him all they can. And when that owner come back from his holiday in Switzerland he find only an empty hole where his house had been."
