we were first shown his special interest, a very autistic trait to have. We get to see him indulge in his interest, we get to see him happy.

but this episode contains the scene that makes it clear Laios cannot understand social cues, tone of voice, sarcasm, or subtlety. He actively suffers socially with other humans.

Shuro is pissed Laios didnt pick up on the fact that he hated Laios, because he was being passive aggressive (at best, Shuro bottled up a lot of feelings), and said verbally he was Laios' friend. Laios takes things at face value, if someone says "im your friend" that's what he believes is true.

He hates that Laios "gets to be genuine". I hate the way he says that "gets" as if its a privilege for Laios. It's a privilege for Shuro who is nobility and has his behavior and emotions stifled. Laios doesnt understand that others are NOT genuine. he's not from that world.

that's why Laios asks "why didnt you TELL me?" and Shuro says it should have been obvious.

it was NOT obvious to Laios, not at all.

And also, that was who Laios thought was his FIRST friend on the island. he thought he made a friend, something actively difficult for him to do.

it devastated him to learn that he was wrong the entire time.

Anon, Kid is his cousin's alternate universe self. He started with the character design of Kuroba Kaito | Kaito Kid in '87 for Magic Kaito, a separate manga, which in and of itself is the character design from a few one shots he did before, then reused that for Okita Soshi from Yaiba in '88.

Then in '94, he would reuse it yet again for Kudo Shinichi | Edogawa Conan in Detective Conan. Kid was supposed to be a one off crossover character, but he proved so popular he kept coming back. Now, they're cousins.

These are not the same character.

Hattori Heiji also looks just alike, only with a different skin tone and a slightly different hairstyle. The guy in the jacket is a one off case character and not the same character either (but at least that has a plot explanation).

These are their respective love interests. Not related, apparently. Yet. If they're part of the main cast, chances are they have one of three or four character designs. He actually can do a wide variety of faces. They're just usually on one off characters.

Me, writing fic where Howard Stark from Iron Man: Armored Adventures meets Howard Stark from the MCU, goes 'I can fix him', tries to fix him and they end up having hot, loving, character-arc-completing sex in their office: "Correct, it's not nearly incestuous enough. (This is partially a joke. His cousin appears to be hot, which is what's important, but if he has alternate universe selves and they're hot, then this is not a joke. Please consider charactercest as an option.)

Oh, it absolutely does exist in English spaces anon. It's just now mostly in private spaces where you have to know someone. Sadly, most of the public art has gotten scrubbed (the kind that's not your AI dudebro lolibait, and even that has taken a hit as some imageboards now ban the content).

Look, it's actually not that surprising that Detective Conan fans would freak over something as trivial as a popular ship being revealed as cousins because, listen: This is a show where the central premise is a precious upstart brat who is stuck in the body of a kid despite actually being 16. Do you know how often you see shota content in that fandom? Almost. Never. (... in EN spaces, anyway. Cough cough.)

That alone should tell you the EN fandom is way more boring than it should be. Of course they would get all burgundy over counsincest. They're fans of a series begging for the weirdest, most depraved chibi porn known to man, and there is just NOTHING even close.

I feel almost a teensy guilty that my motivation in learning Japanese is largely so I can read the dialogue in the weirder doujinshi because those ones pretty much never get translated. Alas, I must learn to do it myself.

I last paid attention in like 2005 or something, so I mainly remember seeing a bunch of badwrong content with Conan.

The good news is that online language learning resources are better than ever. I'm still working my way through iKnow's most common 6k words of Japanese course. Tae Kim's guide is a venerable staple for grammar.

I'm the one who sent the "healthy" anon a while back about the two people who tried to kill each other and only team up against a third group of people when each other is in danger, and people insisting that they were uwu healthy. The mangaka is a Japanese man. He doesn't care. It's not exactly the usual thing, but first cousins is nothing in their culture? He's not trying to sink the ship; we always got lots of fanservice. There was already a canonical first cousin pair, Akai Shuuichi and Miyano Akemi.

Oh, not to mention we just got official art where the theme was prom and it looks like they're taking each other. One of the official couples was even on the other side!

Weaklings is the correct word for it. Not only am I sick and tired of the antis, I'm sick and tired of the people claiming they're not going to make them related. They're just first cousins.

The only thing that annoys me about this whole mess is he said KID wasn't going to be plot relevant anymore. This is very much plot relevant. The LI mistakes KID for her boyfriend as early as episode 76, they've always looked alike. My mistake for thinking that was the draw for others like it was for me.

Okay so, there's this ship. And this ship has been one of the most popular since the very beginning of the manga and the anime. The characters have great chemistry, teasing each other, following each other trails, because (and this will give away what ship I'm talking about) one is a detective, and the other a (former) thief.

And recently, the fandom... collapsed a little teeny tiny bit because the author decided to announce, after more than 34 years since all started, that those characters are, in fact, cousins.

I don't have any problem with it because: 1. I'm used to this turn of events and 2. I can ignore it. But oh boy, some sure aren't ignoring it! And I don't mean people getting squicked by this because those kind of revelations and pairings ain't their thing, that's fine. No no, I mean those who are outraged and screaming that us who keep shipping it are gross freaks and we disrespect the author.

The author can go fuck himself, I have my theory he just pull out this out of his ass to see if we fujos would stop shipping it. And to my own conspiracy theory, I say no! I won't!

Just leave the fandom if you hate the ship now because they're cousins, leave us freaks alone.

I always thought it was like an exaggeration when horse people would talk about how silly it was for anyone to think that riding a horse does not require any particular level of skill or balance or anything, or even that they "drive themselves" (???) but just the tags on the reblogs of that "can you ride a bike and/or horse" post from me alone are demonstrating how overconfident some people are in their (often entirely theoretical!) ability to stay on an alive and moving animal with a will of its own.

I feel like I should make a post about this because it’s not something that’s very well-known, and that Americans in particular may need to know about given the uncertain state of our healthcare system at the moment. I’ve wanted to write this out for a while, It’s kind of a long post, so sorry about that!

If you have an emergency and have to go to the hospital, you’ll owe the hospital a lot of money. (I got into a car wreck and broke my ankle and my arm. My hospital bill was around $20,000)

You’ll also owe the ambulance provider, if you need one. (My ambulance bill was about $800)

You may get separate bills from the anesthesiologist or surgeon. (My anesthesiologist bill was $1,700)

You may need follow-up appointments. (My orthopedic surgeon billed me for the appointments and his surgery together and it was about $1,000)

You’ve also got to pay for medical equipment you need afterward, like crutches or a walking boot. (Mine cost about $75)

Altogether, I ended up with almost $24,000 in medical debt from one car accident. That’s a really scary number for someone like me who makes $10/hr at a 12 hour a week job.

I got my debt down to $1075 by making some phone calls and submitting some paperwork.

The first thing I did was contact the hospital. They don’t make it easy to find, but many hospitals (perhaps most hospitals?) have financial assistance programs for people who can’t afford medical bills. I don’t make a lot of money, and I have bills to pay, so they were able to help me. I called the billing department and asked if they had any assistance programs for low income people who can’t pay their bills. I had to call multiple times, and I got transferred in circles by people who didn’t know what I was talking about. Finally, I got an appointment with someone in “Eligibility Services” (I don’t know what other hospitals call it, if it’s something different). I had to bring my pay stubs and copies of all of my bills. When I got to the hospital for the appointment, nobody knew what I was talking about so I had to wander a little to find where I needed to go. I spoke with the guy in Eligibility Services, and I waited for a decision on how much of the bill they would forgive. A month later, I got a call telling me it was totally forgiven.

I did the same thing for my ambulance bill and my anesthesiologist, but the process was a LOT easier. I just had to mail some paperwork and it was totally forgiven.

I didn’t bother with the medical equipment suppliers, since the bills came from separate companies and I didn’t feel like going through the process twice for $75. I was assured at the hospital that they had similar programs for debt forgiveness, so I could have probably avoided paying that too.

The only thing I couldn’t get taken care of was the surgeon/follow-up appointment cost, but they were able to put me on a no-interest payment plan.

Medical debt is scary because it’s something that can come from stuff that’s already really scary. I didn’t need the burden of $24,000 in debt on top of trying to get around on a crutch with a broken arm (it’s not easy, believe me!).. but I can’t imagine what it would be like with a bigger debt or a more severe medical emergency. I see lots of people in even worse trouble than I was in, both financially and medically. Please know that there are options for you when that GoFundMe doesn’t do enough. Even if your income is higher than mine, it’s worth a shot even for partial debt forgiveness.
