honest question, why would pond be mad about barcode leaving? (don't get me wrong, i'm glad bc is left!) he clearly cares about noone but the three big actors and himself, i doubt he gave a shit about bc.
i mean, you're 100% right. in fact, most of the time, i'm pretty sure pond couldn't actually name the majority of the artists still signed to BOC. however, i like to imagine, idealistically, that on some level he's annoyed another one managed to slip out of his narc control, because he is such a worthless sack of garbage that his potential misery gives me great pleasure.
unfortunately, since we're in the real world, he probably had to be given a dossier explaining who code was so he could pretend to give a shit long enough to make the announcement.

I know this post is only for like two people, but I’m going to make it anyway. So, my obsession with Dead Friend Forever finally reached critical levels and I resorted to binge-watching The Hidden Character just to get more content. For those that don’t know, The Hidden Character (which they literally call “THC”) was the reality show Be On Cloud used to cast DFF. It is bad. Like really bad. And not in a it’s-so-bad-it’s-good-type way. It’s one of the most exploitative pieces of media I have ever watched. I walked into it with a favorable view of BOC, Mile, Apo, and Pond (the CEO), and walked out of it hating all of them.
A small collection of things that happened over the 11-episode run:
Everyone was told that they had to share every single aspect of their life with the viewers or they would be eliminated. And, in fact, the first person eliminated was told that it was because he wasn’t being open enough with the audience. They filmed these boys—one of whom was only seventeen at the time—talking explicitly about their sex lives. Which is, of course, fine to talk about. It’s not fine to air it on television! Even some of the games themselves contained sexually suggestive content (i.e. Which do you prefer "eating" with—your hands or your mouth? If you were to cheat on your significant other, would it be just sex or a full-blown affair?)
During the first part of the show, everyone had a secret that the other players were supposed to guess. One of the player’s secret was that he used to be homophobic. (Questionable casting for a company that only hires men, but I digress). He was praised for having changed his mind. In contrast, JJay’s secret was that he was raised in an abusive household and had once hit his father. Pond crucified the poor guy for this. He made him sit there in front of the whole cast sobbing and apologize for hitting his dad who was an abusive asshole.
After the first half of the show—which served absolutely no purpose at all—we finally move onto the acting portion. This is, after all, supposed to be a talent competition. The judges were so mean. Especially Apo. He was like the Simon Cowell of BOC. There was no constructive component to their criticism. The fact that any of these people are still acting is honestly unbelievable. I would have gone home and cried myself to sleep and then never stepped foot on a stage again.
At one point, each of the groups was assigned a scene from KinnPorsche to act out (because BOC very clearly owns no other IP). One of the pairs was given the scene where Porsche gives Kinn a handjob in the bathroom. I wish I was kidding.
The judges constantly told the contestants to make their scenes feel new and different but any time the actors actually tried to change anything, they complained it was “too” different and the original script was already perfect so who were they to think they could create something better. Once again, Apo and Mile, the original actors of these scenes, are the ones judging them! Like of course they like their version better. What is even happening??
And finally, the whole fucking thing was rigged for Ta to win. Like don’t get me wrong, I love Ta and I think he did a great job, but he was the only one who came into that competition with a built-in fanbase and the winner was chosen by popular vote.
It was all just…baffling. Especially from a company that claims to be trying to change the industry. Like if you want the industry to stop being so exploitative to its actors, maybe start with yourself? It also makes those condescending “how dare you watch our shows just for the NC scenes” press releases they do every week even more annoying.
I have no clue what the reaction to this show was while it was airing but god I hope they never do it again. It literally makes me feel so weird watching DFF now. I feel like those poor kids are being held hostage. Maybe CEO Pond’s been the one under the mask the whole time 🔪
#these tags are gonna make me come off as an asshole but: we been knew#and by we i mean the people who stuck around after KP and went through the horrific way BOC handled build’s scandal#there’s just been a fucking avalanche of bullshit#pond is genuinely fucking evil#part of me is like ‘where has everyone else been’ but that’s not fair and i know this#but for those of us who HAVE been in the trenches the institutional rot in BOC has been apparent for a long time#again: pond is genuinely evil and a despicable person#he cares about himself and his cronies and everyone else can get fucked#as evidenced by the way he’s treated the stable of actors who originally put BOC on the map#as evidenced by his dumpster fire main character syndrome interviews#BOC is the fucking mileapo show and everyone else can just pay homage in the hopes of getting table scraps#i feel like it’s worth mentioning that one of the kids had to get a nose job ‘to look less chinese’#as directed by benevolent CEO pond#and now pond is simpering to the SCMP about how proud he is of his chinese heritage#anyway i know a lot of people in this post were not fans of KP but i was#show meant a lot to me and i have a complicated fucking relationship with it now#bc a lot of us bought into the myth BOC sold us and then we were deeply betrayed#there’s a fucking reason a lot of people left BL fandom#i’ve got one foot out the door most days myself#the absolute horror show that KP became because pond is a narcissistic piece of shit playing with people’s lives#really did do genuine damage to people#quite frankly i hope people become more aware of the rot that is BOC at this point#they still have so many defenders and asslickers and it makes me sick to my stomach#i’ve watched bright happy talented kids in that stable have the light go out of their eyes#i could go on for DAYS about how they’ve sabotaged bible’s career#for the sin of daring to be too popular#i’ve made no bones about where i stand on this wretched company over the last year#i hope quite honestly it goes down in flames#it is a horrifically abusive environment and it makes me ill to see people support their projects#i try not to join public stoning but in this case fuck BOC to the depths of hell

i think it's also interesting to compare against pete, who grew up in an abusive household (although the way his father weaponized him was not quite a 1:1 parallel) and whose approach to violence is, while totally desensitized, a lot more tactical and morally neutral. you can point to the early episode (episode three? it's been so goddamn long since i watched this show) where he and ken are kicking the shit out of the debtor and he's clearly involved in/focused on his work and seems frustrated to be pulled from it, but i don't think he ever gets the same sense of overt enjoyment we see with vegas in the cochlea scene.
which raises the question for me of, does vegas actually enjoy this, or is the entire thing, alongside the rest of the episode, one long-unfurling performance? the argument most likely falls apart when we consider the way he treats pete once they're at the safehouse, but the way he does that strikes me as more driven by a primal need to regain control and release the pain from being so starkly humiliated. i think you could even argue that his basement torture of pete is still a performance (although i haven't really picked at this theory, so i could be talking out of my ass as per usual).
obviously, they're both entirely immune to the horrific nature of violence and both have absurd kill counts throughout the series, but i still can't settle on an easy answer of whether or not it's enjoyable for them or if they're just pragmatic about what needs to be done to survive.
wrote to @affiesque earlier re: some vegas parallels, 'would you have chosen to fight if there was no knife to your throat?' which is something i think about a lot. it's the whole nature vs nurture debate, if the violence is intrinsic to him as a person or if it's generational baggage thrust upon him that he learned to carry well. i've never fully settled on one side or the other bc neither answer feels 100% authentic. is it softening his rough edges to say it's not intrinsic? is it a fundamental misinterpretation of trauma to say it is?
don't quite have a point or a conclusion, just pondering on it again, like you do.

since i'm kind of (??) back into writing and vaguely/crossly prodding at a chapter ten of SPH, i am posting a snippet of a different project for wip wednesday.
this is an insanely, insanely long-gestating co-writing project between @kissporsche and me, which has been plotted and replotted so many times the messages about it likely exceed the word count of war and peace. it's a role reversal/loosely reverse safehouse fantasy au of fae pete/human vegas. i feel intensely passionate about it, which does not prevent me from setting it down from months on end and not looking at it. (i am a nightmare of a co-writer.)
i would love to finish this fic, if i can pummel my brain into submission and learn how to be a functional human being. until then, please enjoy a very tiny bit of vegas in a collar.
‘I do wish I didn’t need to do that,’ said Pete. There was a thin gold chain in his hands, and he pulled Vegas nearer with it. ‘But some of you get so difficult that I have no other choice.’
Vegas struggled futilely against the bonds. It only drew his wrists tight against each other. He swallowed and felt the ugly weight of the collar. ‘What the hell do you want with me?’
Pete studied him. ‘I don’t know yet. I haven’t decided.’
‘Kill me, then,’ Vegas spat. ‘We both know I won’t leave here alive.’
The chain dangled limp in Pete’s hand as he stood. He hooked his finger under Vegas’ collar, bringing their faces so close Vegas could feel the whisper of his breath. ‘It’s awfully rude for a guest to make demands like this.’
He yanked on the chain, and Vegas stumbled and fell to his knees. His palms scraped against the wood floor. The chain glowed warm and inviting in front of him, taunting him to try and snap it. He couldn’t make his own hands move.
‘We were having a lovely time,’ Pete said. ‘Please don’t ruin it.’ He took Vegas’ chin in his hand and forced Vegas to look up at him. There was the ghost of a smile playing on his lips.
‘If you want to break me, you’ll have to do better than that,’ said Vegas. He jerked away from Pete’s touch. ‘And if you’re so inclined to touch me, put your hand around my throat. Just try to make it count this time.’
Pete just gave him that same inscrutable look. ‘You’re like a rabbit, aren’t you?’ he said. ‘Nervous and greedy and impatient. You have to keep moving. What happens when you stop?’ He rubbed a lock of Vegas’ hair between his finger and thumb. ‘It’s no matter, of course. You won’t die here. It isn’t your choice.’
