A Bleak Spot in a Bright Place

I am but a bleak spot that yearns to be in bright places. I don’t want to be just another mundane piece of a pebble on the shore that no one cares to look closer at. I cared to be a trinket. I cared to be the first-rate version of myself until I’ve grown much enough to meet reality.

As I grew, the bleakness spreads wide enough to consume my ever radiant dreams and hopes in arts, sciences and in life as a whole. It is when I came to know how unforgiving the world is, where decisions are final and mistake all too crucial. It steals away from me the confidence, fun, and passion I once had as a kid.

All were shaded by vignettes I never thought would emerge in me. Criticism has the power and is much capable to do that. I kept on reminding myself to never falter my courage, even when faced with intimidation and humiliation but, it does not help the flame to ignite further. It gradually dims until I was left unexcited and listless. I wonder how things I am most fond of turned to be my real nightmares.

I understood then how my limitations could create complications. How capable I am to disappoint myself. How I have been so hard on myself by hearing and agreeing only their words rather than mine's, pressing the deep cut wound open instead of stitching it. No wonder the pain lingers longer more than the very seconds those moments happened.

But, with pain comes the gain. I traded tears with a new mind-set. One that bears kindness of knowing who I truly am and what I am capable of. Not the unrealistic images I did paint but, the very purpose of me, to look for opportunities to learn and develop not much necessarily of aptitude but of the right attitude. I changed my attitude since the world won’t change for me.  Although I’ve been through storms and thunders after that, the light was even brighter, and it was made more perfect for my bleak spot.

Only then, I was able to trudge more countless battles, never afraid, always forgiving.

Before sleeps, I often create an imaginagy picture of me being overtly expressive. Those unspoken words I personally want my family to hear are always repressed. I desire that one day at the right time with the right people, I can finally pour out my heart and reach theirs with the words I silently rehearse during before sleeps.

Us in His Timeline

Read Psalm 139, at the latter of verse 16. The words say that God wrote our history, our lifetime, all the futures  we long to know and thrive to live in His book. All the nights of wandering thoughts, trying to make sense of our tomorrows, are completely useless. In Him, we already lived the lives we are yet to have. His timeline of our lives have long been completed. It is just us who need to ask Him for grace, to make us follow and trail His plans and to take joy in it in all circumstances.

Peeks and Glimpse

Thrill comes by not seeing. Not knowing of what’s beyond is something most would believe as a work of destiny and fate. The thrill is the best part of uncertainties. However, getting thrilled don’t take up space in business. Although by nature businesses are threads to walk upon but in reality each step is calculated. 

In business, a close door is what divides planning and operation. A gap between expectation and reality and a one-way lane that makes U-turns impossibly hard. Thus, it is important to closely expect the reality to make businesses succeed. And one way to make it happen is to take a glimpse of what’s beyond the closed door and plan out everything beforehand.

A peek is a fraction of the whole but means everything to entrepreneurs. If one can’t wholly imagine the first operations in a business, some use the sights of the people whom they have targeted on selling their services and products to. 

Since entrepreneurs can be biased in their own beliefs and understanding, it is best to validate with people prospected as customers of the business. Their views and questions will transparently show the other side of the closed door. It will make the picture whole from one view to another. Their insights will become the basis of the entrepreneurs on which plan to consider and  which one to revise.

Here are some educated guess we have presumed in our plans that clashed with the views of some selected-few:

Target market was supposedly among the most vulnerable: women and children. Male interviewees insist that they too felt unsafe and rather ask for help when in peril. Target market then shifted  to be neither distinctive to gender nor age.

Target market is broad to consider everyone. The business is inclusive however, it specifically needs to identify users. Children and elders never heard of security apps while teens and adults, mostly working, knew. Target market considers employees and slightly among the youth.

Response team consists of 911 hotline and PNP. Some questioned about the former’s response rate and efficiency. Nationwide, sixteen call centers are existing, scattered across each region, operating 24/7. On the question, why not directly call 911 than accessing the HelpMe App, 911 based on the reviews are often unreliable thus, the hotline needs ‘pressure’ and it’ll come as the application rely to it as its partner, forcing the hotline to respond with quality.  PNP is included since route calls by 911 will tap as well the PNP, unless it is an emergency that requires other response from other offices.

Here are some educated guess we have presumed in our plans that agreed with the views of some selected-few:

Mode of connectivity is understandably online. Most teens and working adults don’t mind running cellular data to access the application since they are regularly on line.

Mode of monetization includes Freenium. Most interviewee thought that most businesses with this kind of BMC attracts users and therefore, customers.

Tracking tool used is GPS. It is by permission that GPS of a user is tracked and only if the application is purposely enabled. The interviewees knew how GPS works and it came to no question for them about using it as a tool to track their routes.

Audio recording as another safety function of the App is well accepted as well. The interviewees pose great responses on this.

With the validation, plans were laid out better. From the target market to the application features and functions to monetization, the few, though selected non-randomly, poses factual insights which contributed to the validity of our plans.

Indeed, what it takes to make plans that fit the unseen reality is to peek and take glimpse from borrowed sights - the sights of people who knew collectively how to succeed reality.

Entrepreneurial Simulations

Sometimes, plans are not just enough. It’s the capacity to put all these to real sense that will justify everything. I wonder what is greater plans or actions. The former might be too far from getting done and might not get done, at all. The latter, however, may be better as results are immediate. But I say, to combine both might be better than just to choose one. 

Honestly, It never came to me to create an application and start business with it. The idea may have just sprung in between discussion with the group, obliged to think one, which we thought is a great idea - the HelpMe App. But as we progress in entrepreneurship class, I’ve realized that it is great to have it more than an idea because all the while I suppose that we shouldn’t have to. 

It is just limiting to think that we can’t realize our plans with our current knowledge and resources. But then again, all the works given, the venture proposal, empathy canvas, the BMCs, the customer validations, the pitching, all of these are simulations if ever we wanted to pursue business, making us capable to.

And so,  I work to do what best I can contribute to the group on whichever activity given and learn from it. I might have not seen myself yet towards this line of vocation however, I do appreciate myself to get there someday. We may never get our plans get done as we yearn them to be but, I know someday, somehow, we’ll make something out of it.

Although I can think of some undergrad proposals that went realized, I can’t deny the probability that most only stop in plans.  And though it will, at least I knew better to make another one.

GROUP ACTIVITY

We haven’t discussed anything official yet but, we are into figuring out how much revenue we will gain in the business. Expectedly, our math won’t be that accurate however, there’s nothing we can’t do but presume and estimate. We try to put it in a realistic manner while discussing our researches regarding the target investments quota that will opt to meet the gross expenditures which will, as well, bring back promising revenues to investors. The group haven’t come up yet with an estimated revenue sales but aims to have it before the final pitching.

CUSTOMER VALIDATION

Validation is much given emphasis to overlook if our plans on this kind of business is marketably relevant. The group asked eight locals to see signs of interest. It is true to the seven that they feel unsafe in a regular basis however, they admit that they are not capable of defending themselves and that if they really can’t, especially in peril, all they can think of is to call for help. Notably, only a few knew about mobile security apps among the eight. 

However, on a recent random interview with the family, all except my parents knew about the same certain apps. Upon asked if they consider having one, my siblings pose great response of yeses. When asked if it only works online would they rather use it or not, my two adult siblings, both working, don’t mind having it used online. With the discussion going on, my mother got curious and asked what really is meant by mobile security app.

Elders might not know about technology however, their curiosity to learn will never hinder them to get along with the advancements. Working adults seem to be a clearer target in the market as users who will eventually become customers of the HelpMe App. It is given that mostly everyone needed safety and security and so it is in no doubt that the application will be noticed and used once it will be put out into market.

LECTURE 

The lecture was insightful. It was clear that the creation of minds are in need to be properly protected and recognized to be owned by those, who among the firsts, invented it. 

It’s relevance prevents rise of competitors and copies, identical research and facilitates increase of company’s market value and extends franchising and IP-agreements. There is known an IP cycle which basically rolls around creation, protection, utilization and enforcement. IP rights, as well, are of multiple kinds. Patents are technical solutions to a problem in any field of human activity which are new, inventive and industrially applicable. Utility model is similar to the former but lacks the inventive part. Then there’s the industrial design, trademark, copyrights and related rights, and some others.

The thing about Intellectual Property Right, which I find interesting, is it’s term of protection. The way it was set meant a lot to businesses that await for the expiry of the right to take advantage of the idea or invention. 

The latter part of the lecture transfer of technology is discussed. It is signed to law, RA 10055, which allows technology or inventions to be transferred from the owner to other people, institutions or organizations. I learned that there are three ways to transfer technology: deployment to the government; extension to communities without commercial value; and commercialization where right holder get to have royalty fees from selling it to interested tech takers.

Dr. Dumancas didn’t fail to call researchers and inventors to do art or patent search before planning on working one to avoid waste in resources, especially when funded by schools, organizations or institutions. All in all, the lecture was informative from which I learned a lot.

People, please stop parading scars for emphathy on soc med. You'll never get it, especially in a way that is most unlikely as throwing shades and insults. Be better, be wiser. Change up, if someone ought to see what you missed about yourself then work on it. Don't blame them for your misery even if it's the rightest thing to do.

Clutter to Glamor

The hardest part in doing puzzles is matching pieces through trial and error. Ideas, as well, in the same manner can be all over, scattered and jumbled at first. Brainstorming fixes everything, a moment to plan and strategize, especially when one mind works with a few others. Like puzzle pieces, ideas have an exact spot to fit with another until the clutter surprisingly turns into glamor.

The clutter begins as the group agreed to share our respective ideas on which kind and exactly what product or service we would venture as student entrepreneurs. Two of us, suggested going for product development, hers was the iconic EnviBlocks from shredded plastics, mine was Lego Concrete Blocks both of which are construction related.  Others pose interest on application development; proposed ideas are EasyClean and TalkTherapy Services clearing both dirt and mental stain. At first, no one seems to agree which piece to start the puzzle with. Good thing everyone is unsure. With further engagement the group came up with a poll. Votes were casted and unanimously points to Help Me: An Immediate Smartphone Security App Service, it might be due to danger emergence and prevalence.

The next piece is recognizing the target market, to whom will we serve our product and whom will benefit the service it provides. It wasn’t part of the plan however, I tried to research what age-level, gender or social status are often prone to immediate peril.  From which I formulated a hypothesis, I presume that women in their 18-20s and children are often the weakest victims preyed by criminals. I attempted to justify my presumptions through a consensus however failed.

I tried to guess, but the piece didn’t seem to match. All of the interviewees suggest that regardless of gender, age or status everyone is prone to danger. With this, I encounter a fact that can’t be found in any Statistics. Sometimes, reliable sources are among us, puzzle hints indeed are just inches away. All it takes is for us to recognize it.

And so, it took long for the group and each member to fit the right pieces together. Many questions were asked, ideas were doubted and understanding is tested. But only the exertion of efforts, time, scrutiny and humility can multiple minds make one puzzle of idea whole again. 

As one puzzle is solved, another one will emerge. Plans on creating prototypes and monetization will eventually be thrice harder to figure out. Only that, the more the clutter the greater the glamor is.
