You know how it's so easy to compliment your pets and tell them how much you love them, often way easier than to other people?

Skk are in the begginings of some kind of established relationship. Chuuya's been hanging out with a dog for a while, showering it with love: "gorgeous", "you're so cute", "you're doing so good", "you're adorable", "I love you", etc. The whole deal.

And Dazai is witnessing it all, silently seething because a dog, a goddamn dog, is getting more verbal affection than him from his own partner. He's been here longer! And Chuuya doesn't shower him in compliments like that! He hasn't even gotten his first "I love you" yet! This is unfair! He's losing to a literal dog!!!!

hello! do you have any advice for watching a story in which the only thing you don't like is the main character?

and it's not because the main character is bad, it's just that there's something about him that you don't like.

like if it wasn't the main character it would be good because of that one thing it wouldn't be on screen as much and the other qualities you like would shine through more.

Normally when this happens to me I stop watching the show but the show it's in has everything I like the only problem is the main character.

Look, anon. No one can tell you what to watch. The easy answer is, if you like watching it more than you hate that character, you should keep watching it. If you hate the character more than you like watching the show, you should stop watching it. It's as simple as that. Some people can vibe right on through disliking the main character no problem, and some people just don't wanna.

But here's the thing. I'm gonna let you in on a little secret, anon. Sometimes, characters--even main characters--are written to be unlikable. Like, on purpose. You've gotta ask yourself: why? Why would a writer do that?

Not everything is written to be just entertaining. Sometimes the whole idea is to get you to think about something. Sometimes an unlikable character is more likely to drive the broader points made in the story home to the audience.

When you recognize it's not only okay to dislike a character, even a main character, but that sometimes you're SUPPOSED to dislike a character, it can make you paradoxically like them more. It just depends on if you think you're getting what the writer is saying. If you're not vibing with the story in general, that'd be more likely to make me not wanna stick with it. But if you like the whole story with the exception of the main character for some nebulous reason you can't name, well, I personally would be even more likely to watch the show until I could put words to why I feel that way lol.
