So one of the things that American Psycho – the book, not the movie – does to illustrate its narrator’s shallow materialism is devoting a lot of word count to describing characters’ outfits, except the resulting descriptions are just random mishmashes of high-class brands that any reader who’s familiar with them would recognise as something that would look clownish and absurd if you actually wore all that.
I was thinking about that, and then it occurred to me: you know what other well known work of fiction also does that?

People who’ve never heard a Scouse accent will never truly understand the kind of chaotic energy Constantine radiates like 99% of the people he speaks to must not understand a word he’s saying

There are too many panels in comics of Constantine sitting alone in dark looking bars and pubs, like? Lets be real? John lingers in a Weatherspoons, making the best of how cheap the drinks are while trying to work out how the table-service app works and avoiding conversations with the usual patrons who are way too friendly.
