The First Omen (2024)
This is a Movie Health Community evaluation. It is intended to inform people of potential health hazards in movies and does not reflect the quality of the film itself. The information presented here has not been reviewed by any medical professionals.
The First Omen has a scene taking place at a disco which, while it starts off without strobe lights, eventually uses extreme strobe lights. These strobes continue through two different songs, and are done once there is no music playing. When a character visits an apartment in a foggy neighborhood, that apartment occasionally has lights strobing from just outside. Late flashback sequences return to these scenes without warning.
All of the camera work in this film is very smooth. One slow spinning shot inside a moving vehicle may be disorienting.
Flashing Lights: 9/10. Motion Sickness: 2/10.
TRIGGER WARNING: This film features a graphic childbirth scene about a third of the way into the runtime. An open head wound is shown in one scene. One person dies by suicide. Within just a couple of minutes, there is a visceral car crash, a person vomiting on-screen, intense body convulsions, and a syringe piercing someone's skin up-close. Two scenes show rituals that include acts of sexual assault.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024)
This is a Movie Health Community evaluation. It is intended to inform people of potential health hazards in movies and does not reflect the quality of the film itself. The information presented here has not been reviewed by any medical professionals.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has a few scenes that use extreme strobe effects. These include one where people are taking an aircraft through a portal (which is done when music starts playing), and one person having a vision of rapidly-flashing images after dozing off in a class. There is severe lightning during a rainy scene. Some glowing effects of characters and sci-fi objects create frequent and unpredictable strobe effects.
This film has a lot of action at extreme heights and speeds. Some of the action takes place in an environment where the dynamics of up and down suddenly reverse, and there are frequent shots where the camera rolls sideways in a very disorienting way.
Flashing Lights: 10/10. Motion Sickness: 9/10.
TRIGGER WARNING: There is extensive animal gore in this film, but none of the blood shown is red.

Immaculate (2024)
This is a Movie Health Community evaluation. It is intended to inform people of potential health hazards in movies and does not reflect the quality of the film itself. The information presented here has not been reviewed by any medical professionals.
Immaculate has one brief scene lit by red strobe lights. This starts with a jump scare in a confessional booth, and ends when the scene becomes more quiet. The inciting incident of the film happens during this scene, but it's difficult to tell what's going on, even if you watch it. One late scene shows someone running through dark environments with a flashlight, which shines directly at the camera a few times. The NEON production company logo that starts the film has a brief strobe effect.
All of the camera work in this film is either stationary or very smooth.
Flashing Lights: 6/10. Motion Sickness: 1/10.
TRIGGER WARNING: This film depicts a lot of body horror, including compound fractures, branding, forced surgical actions, removal of body parts while conscious, a fingernail coming off of a finger, and facial reactions during unmedicated childbirth. There is extensive violence against a pregnant woman, and even though it is not depicted through a sexual act, this pregnancy is forced on her against her will. One animal is killed on-screen, and another is shown dead and bloody. There are two vomiting incidents; the first occurs during a bathing scene, the second occurs as a scene cut with no warning at all.

TRIGGER WARNING: Severe domestic violence happens off-screen, with physical and emotional aftermaths shown throughout the film. There are multiple close-ups of syringes piercing skin. There are two vomiting incidents; the first happens while someone hallucinates while on a stage, and the other happens late in the film, very suddenly and with no warning as two people return home from an outing. Early in the film, a toilet overflowing with feces is shown in detail.

Flashing Lights: 4/10. Motion Sickness: 8/10.

Earlier this week, I saw a live show at a theme park. In the entry way of this theater, they had a sign warning about strobe lights and other effects that may bother some guests. About 5 minutes before the show started, they made an announcement with the same warning over the speakers.
One could say that this is a positive thing on the lines of accessibility, and while it is refreshing to see this warning in multiple spots in a place where it will be necessary, here’s the hard truth: THAT WAS THE BARE MINIMUM.
True accessibility would involve abandoning the strobe light effects altogether, and finding another way to add some spectacle to the show. Among other things that Barbie proved by being the highest-grossing movie of 2023, it proved that a successful movie does not need strobe effects.
There is no longer any justification for using strobe effects. It is within our power to do better, therefore it is our responsibility to do better.
Do you ever think people with epilepsy get so pissed when the 9000th game they've tried to play or movie they've tried to watch has the waring? Becuase I see that flashing warning almost everywhere.
