Comp 101: Reflection
English 101 Reflection: Position Paper
By completing the position paper assignment, I learned how to effectively present my opinion through the form of the writing process; by utilizing the draft, revision, and editing process. I have increased my knowledge on how to properly read texts actively and analytically; by doing multiple peer reviews, were I had to identify the purpose, audience, evidence if needed, and if its properly structured. By completing multiple writing, including this position paper, I believe I have become a more confident writer. I have learned to trust myself more when it comes to doing revisions of my own work, I can properly cite any sources if needed and I can appropriately correct the structure, style, grammar, or format of any given assignment if I put my all into it. This certain assignment was given with the intent for us, the class, to properly present an arguable opinion on an issue or topic we have a decent amount of knowledge about. I believe my position paper would be directed towards the audience of, obviously, my peers/class mates, and people looking for health related articles. The genre of this assignment was a personal narrative. This class made me have to work with others to share my ideas. Almost every day we had to work in groups of three sharing ideas or what we posted on the discussion board for a previous assignment. In the future, I believe speaking and writing for a larger group or audiences will become much easier.First I will make my outline right away, then I will fill in the correct areas of the outline that go with my paper. After writing the whole draft I will review and revise the paper before I am to either turn it in or send it.

Comp 101: Brief Spectacular Take
Script Draft:
Where: Preferably somewhere with a gym in the background or maybe outside, with bright green grass behind me on a sunny day.
Possible visuals to be used: myself, people I’ve helped, other videos I’ve made, etc.
How will I record/edit: I will use my own camera and probably used Adobe Premiere on the school laptop.
Music: I’ll find music once I finish recording so that I can match the tone of the video.
Needs to be 2 min and 30 sec long
Intro old: Weight training to me, is more than just achieving a great physical appearance, its more than becoming a better athlete. Weight training taught me how to develop good habits, consistency, how to be open minded and that you need to care for your-self.
Talk about how near death experience changed my life forever.
Script Final:
Intro New: Working out to me, is a part of my lifestyle now, to me it’s being active and being able to move my body every day.
No matter how you do it, whether its strength training, mobility work or athletic training, you do it for a reason.
A lot of people do it for different reasons; maybe they want to become the next great athlete, extend your lifespan or they use it as a form of therapy; both mentally and/or physically. In my case,
I’m all the above.
*Clap
My “Spark” or reason I became so obsessed with training is because of a close call I had with my life,
this happened during my junior year of high school. Like some of my high school peers I had my occasional fun from time to time, but you can only take part in risky behavior before something bad happens.
At 3:25 am May 3rd 2015 my “something bad” had happened.
It was one of my friends and I coming back from party early in the morning, I was under the influence, passed out in the back seat of my car while he was driving us home.
Everything, to my understanding, was going fine, until he swerved towards the ditch, the car rolled and I was ejected out the rear window of my own car.
All of what I’ve told you so far is what others have told me.
The only thing I can remember from this early morning was, dancing with some random girl by a fire, drinking, and being in the back of an ambulance.
As you can tell I have a gap between drinking and being in an ambulance.
This is something I will never forget, I woke up in the hospital after sleeping 14 hours straight,
hearing about how I’m lucky to be able to move, be able to speak and let alone being able to breath another day.
I almost got something taken away from me that I can’t replace, my life.
My name is Max Patraw; and this is my brief but spectacular take on

Comp 101: Position Paper; Draft & Revised
Draft:
I. Introduction
A. Introduce the topic – Healthy Lifestyle
When asked, what do think of when you hear the words healthy lifestyle? A lot of people say something along the lines of; small “clean” meals, expensive, stressful, long hours in the gym, hungry, etc. The truth or definition of the “healthy lifestyle”, In my own personal opinion, based on the knowledge I’ve learned of the subject over the years is; when one promotes balance and improvement to peoples physical and mental well-being.
B. Provide background on the topic to explain why it is important
C. Assert the thesis (your view of the issue). More on thesis statements can be found below.
The reason I believe understanding the “healthy lifestyle” is important, is that you become understanding on how you need to treat your body, you may see that you’re doing something that is harming your well-being either in the present or is going to harm you in the future, you will become more appreciative of your 1 life, and you can potently increase your own lifespan or help others as well.
III. Your Argument
A. Assert point #1 of your claims
The first thing I want to go over is that, people believe that the “healthy lifestyle” is hard to do.
1. Give your educated and informed opinion
My opinion on this is, no it’s not hard. A healthy lifestyle is one of the best things you can do/have in life. The healthy lifestyle that I believe in is extremely beneficial in life. It will help build structure in your life. For example, by either figuring out what you need to eat to feel “good” on a daily basis or by figuring out how to manage your time; by designating it towards certain important or time consuming activities in your day.
2. Provide support/proof using more than one source (preferably three)
According to Amanda, a health coach and blogger on runtothefinish.com, a healthy lifestyle “doesn’t get easier, but it isn’t that hard”. Amanda states that many people overthink the healthy lifestyle by coming to the assumption that that they can’t have grains, dairy, meat, sugar. That we need to run more or run less, etc. “No wonder so many people throw their hands in the up and quit before they’ve even started.” Not to say eating clean, going to the gym or sleeping enough daily is easy by any means, it’s just that we the American race have created the notion that perfection is required to be healthy. To live a healthy lifestyle, you don’t have to be perfect! Yes, it may be stress full at times but as you learn more things will become easier.
B. Assert point #2 of your claims
Secondly, I would like to state my opinion on the claim that “it’s expensive”
1. Give your educated and informed opinion
What I have to say is, it all depends on your end goals and how you do your purchasing. Yes, if you’re going to become some body builder you’re going to spend a pretty penny on food and supplements. But when it comes to the average joe all you need is the knowledge of how much food you need to intake daily, an area to exercise and to be honest you don’t need any of the supplements like fat burners, pre-workouts or anything like that, all you need is yourself, food, sleep and motivation.
2. Provide support/proof using more than one source (preferably three)
Like I said, yourself or other people may still be saying, “but healthy foods expensive how do I afford to be healthy”. My answer to that is, yes foods expensive, but it all depends on where you get it. According to the article ‘The Truth About Healthy Eating’: 7 Eye-Opening Findings From The BBC Show. “Expensive foods can be easily replaced with cheaper, everyday foods.” Like I said it all depends on where and what you get. You can find cheaper alternatives to the proclaimed superfoods by either researching the nutritional facts about the foods you eat, going to farmer’s markets or even by just picking up the product, that’s usually not as appealing and hidden, on the self-that’s less expensive.
___C. Assert point #3 of your claims
And the last think I would like to stress, is that you don’t have to work out for 2-3 hours a day to be considered living the healthy lifestyle.
1. Give your educated and informed opinion
The only thing I have to say is that, all you have to do, if you consider yourself unhealthy, is be more active and driven then you are right now. It doesn’t take hours in the gym, running 8 miles a day or extreme dieting to become healthy. I am a strong believer that by creating a goal, such as eating less junk food in a day, and doing everything you can to achieve that said goal will come a positive outcome.
2. Provide support/proof using more than one source (preferably three)
Healthy living is within your reach, and by starting today your already making progress. Miranda Hattie a senior writer for webmd.com and CNN journalist says that “Your first step toward healthy living is to get a handle on your health status right now.”
IV. Conclusion
___A. Restate your argument
So, if you’re looking to obtain that healthy lifestyle or are looking to improve from where your already at, I would recommend to you is to do your research and practice what you learn. The healthy lifestyle I live today is because I push myself to achieve what others think is hard. Don’t quit before you start, its all a learning process.

Comp 101: Maybe College
1) The students interviewed support the article by giving real-life opinions and views from a young adult that grew up in rural America. Coming from a small town in northern Wisconsin, being a first-generation student and growing up in a low-income family that was surrounded by drugs I related to a lot of this article. The way the students described their lives made me feel like I too am/was in the same situation. It truly was a big decision to make when going to college. I feel the only parts that weren't covered as much, are the portions of the article that included Amanda Waklstedt and Ryan Lee. In my opinion, the article talked more about the hardships of the students, such as, being a first generation student, poor upbringings and being apart of low income family's. I feel that the article didn't touch on subject of the students beliefs. There are a few moments in the article where I feel conservative woman. And, the young man that talked about how college is going to be a positive outcome for him, just a few classes in community college and he can get paid more than double what he was in the first place.
2) I believe Emily Steele and Ryan Lee from the article will for sure either stay in their hometown or live in a close distance from their hometown. And, Amanda Wahlstedt, Richard Livingston, John Dunn and Autumn Crawford will leave and more than likely not go back. I believe the students that are have chosen to or are trying to move to the bigger cities away from their hometown or are going to the larger universities have a higher chance of moving away from their hometown. These students are, I feel just want to be away from the place they lived all at their lives. And the two that are near home have a higher chance of staying there.
3) Since I do have some experience, I would recommend to the incoming rural student to really try and get out of their comfort zone at first, experience new things, talk to new people (even if you don’t think you may be great friends still push yourself to do it) and stay open minded. I believe that in order to succeed you have to put yourself above others at times. As harsh as that may sound, it’s just something you must do.
My advice to John Dunn
Hi John,
I know you dont know me, I'm currently a first generation college student here at UW-Stout in Wisconsin. Your story on the article Maybe College really had me feel for you. I too come from a family that didn't necessarily have the best background, but I still decided to go to college. I wouldn't take that decision back for anything. I have had a lot of new experiences, made new friends and have came closer to figuring out what I want to do for the rest of my life. My only advice to you, is to focus on your well being. I would recommend that you focus on whats right for you and dont worry about what others think about you. Your there for your future alone not everyone else, Good luck John.

Comp 101: Flash Mob
My created flash mob:
Group: Max Patraw, Chase Pierce, Grant Preston
How to make a flash mob: Freeze mob
Get a group of friends, family or random people together to participate/perform in the flash mob.
Decided what the flash mob is going to be about, if it’s for something important or just for fun. In this instance, it will just be a freeze mob for fun.
Choose a location to perform the flash/freeze mob – A large Mall
Choose the date and time of day that the freeze mob will happen – Noon on a week end to get as many people to participate as possible.
Decided what will be happing in the mall right before the freeze mob happens - Participants will be walking with each other, talking, going up and down the stairs/escalators, playing music, listening/watching someone perform the music, etc. (Common mall activities)
Once the clock strikes 12:00pm (noon) the music performer will stop playing and everyone will freeze where ever they are, stop talking and stay still for a period of time – 5 mins
There will be a designated filmer that will capture the performance to see how the mall goers (audience) reacts.
Once the clock hits 12:05pm everyone will unfreeze and continue on with whatever they were doing before the clock hit 12:00pm.

Comp 101: Spoken Word Poem
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jg7S82PIGZw
In this spoken word poetry piece a young man talks about how "Today love is still around, its hard to find, but can still be found". If you try to break this down anymore hes simply talking about how in today's society many people have lost chivalry but if you take your time you can find that special someone for you, that just by just hearing your name a smile will come to there face.
The speaker sounds and stands strong, he shows his conviction in every word he says using the tone of his voice. He sounds abashed (cause to feel embarrassed, disconcerted, or ashamed)  while making us the people watching the video feel the same. As for design, the video was mostly a close up on his face, he wanted the audience to feel as if he was talking to them in person making if feel personal. He also used the bright sun glares and uplifting music to give hope, hope that one day "true love" will reappear in all of our lives.

Comp 101: Superbowl Comm. Lexus "Make Some Noise" - Super Bowl 2015
The Super Bowl ad I chose to was the Lexus "Make Some Noise" from 2015. Lexus is known for its' luxury vehicles, and when you think of luxury vehicles you typically think of the them being quite expensive and if so; that they are, or should be, of the highest quality and appealing to the eye. What you don’t think of is the utility of the vehicle. Lexus made this ad to showcase power and utility of the Lexus NX Turbo and NX Hybrid. Not only did they captivate their audience’s attention with the elegant appearance of the vehicle; but they also used the sounds of the roaring engine and the tires squeaking when the vehicle would turn or stop to give a sense of assurance that this vehicle isn’t/wasn’t like any of its previous predecessors. I believe this ad succeeded in being persuasive, in the sense that it made it seem like this newer car is better than any other at the luxury level of vehicles. This ad used the audiences 2 most used senses, both sight and hearing, to really impress the audience making them believe the vehicle is of great power, elegant in its looks and is functional.

Comp 101: Film Review
Film Review
February 28, 2017
Movie Review: DOPE
The movie I will be doing my review on is the indie film “DOPE”, which was directed by Rick Famuyiwa and released on Netflix on October 13th, 2015. “Dope” is and R rated film that has been rated 7.3/1 by IMDb, 89% by Rotten Tomatoes and given a 4/5 from Common Sense Media. This film is classified as a comedy and drama. It was budgeted $7 million to make and made about $18 million at the box office. The film starts off with Malcom, the main character, talking to his mother about how one day the world will no longer use regular money and only use bid coins (an online alternative to are money today). As the Malcom talks with his mother a stile frame happens and a narrator gives us the background on who Malcom is. “Malcom is a geek. Malcom lives with his single mother, and has only one memory of his father. Malcom lives in Inglewood, California in the Darby Dickson area known as the bottoms”. The narrator of the film goes on to describe Malcom more, who is friends are, Jib and Diggy who are also “geeks”. The tree friends are deeply obsessed with 90’s hip-hop culture, the music, old MTV raps episodes, the fashion and oh they also are obsessing with the 90’s slang. We begin to learn that the film takes place when Malcom is actually a senior in high school, the top of his class to be exact, that is juggling college applications, academic interviews, the SAT and a big crush on Nakia. The biggest surprise out of anything you’ve read so far is that Malcom, the poor, African American kid that lives in the gang infested Inglewood, California is given the opportunity to have an interview to Harvard, yes, the Ivy league Harvard. You may think, wow this kid has it all figured out. But because of a chance invitation to an underground party, Malcom leads himself onto an adventure that could bring him from being a “geek”, to being dope, and to ultimately being himself. One thing that I personally found really interesting was that the narration, it was actually Malcom’s Harvard application letter. I’m not going to tell you if he got in or not, if he got the girl or spoil the end of the film because that not mine to share and yours to find out.
This movie does have its twists and turn throughout, its comedy and its drama. Shameik Moore who played Malcom did a fantastic job capturing his character, he made me feel as if I knew Malcom in real life. If I was you I would definitely give this film a look, it’s worth your time. The next movie I see that has either Shameik Moore playing a role in it or director Rick Famuyiwa directing, I’m not going to hesitate to go see it.
Dope. Dir: R. Famuyiwa. Perf: Shameik Moore, Blake Anderson, Kiersey Clemons and Tony Revolori. 2015. Film
