(In)convenience Store
The convenience store wasn’t one Kaneki was familiar with, but it was along his walk and stopping in to grab some instant coffee would be, well, convenient.
What wasn’t convenient, however, was the store’s lack of a certain favorite brand. He contemplated asking the store clerk who was too engrossed in a crossword puzzle to acknowledge any customers, but there wasn’t even an empty space on the shelf to carry any Blondy brand coffee.

Kaneki looked between the options present, feeling lost.

With a nod, Kaneki gave an appreciative nod.
“Thank you, I was actually trying to practice some as you walked in.”
Since his only customer had only requested one order for the time being, Kaneki felt no need to write the order down before politely dismissing himself. He immediate got to work on brewing the latte. Every cup would be brewed fresh for each customer, enhancing the quality of what Antieku had to offer.
As a finishing touch to the cup of aromatic coffee, Kaneki focused on the art. He managed to create a delicate pattern that resembled a branch and leaves. He could pinpoint a leaflet that hadn’t formed quite right, but it was one of his best attempts yet.
Tumblr media
“Here you go, sir.” Kaneki said as he delivered the steaming beverage to his guest. Kaneki had a certain air of satisfaction about him as the cup was placed upon the table.
An Evening Brew
“Please.” Amon looked around the shop, noticing no other customers or employees. Maybe this was a slow hour for them. If so, now would be the perfect time for the young recruit to practice at this new job.
“How about you try and make a picture on my latte? It would be good practice for another customer who actually cares for that sort of thing, right?”
He mustered another smile for the boy, in an attempt to encourage him. “I’m sure you can do it.”

(( Hey everyone! I’ve just recently moved into a new apartment. The entire process was pretty last minute, short notice for getting move in dates and paperwork signed. Long story short, I’d been pretty frazzled and away from the computer lately.
I’m moved in now though, and almost completely settled into the new place. Work still has me frequently drained with the consistent six day work weeks and my longer commute now... But I still want to try to pick up my activity around here and get writing more consistently again.
So if anybody wants to message me to plot, or wants a starter, or wants to write a starter for me even... please don’t be shy! ))

Kaneki gave a small smile, feeling a sense of relief wash over him at the investigator’s comment.
“I don’t entirely understand it myself. Maybe there’s a certain beauty in an art form that isn’t meant to last?”
For a moment, Kaneki became thoughtful over the idea. It was something that he could comfortably muse over, like an answer was waiting for him to grasp at it if he just gave the idea enough of his time.
But there was a time and place for everything, and Kaneki snapped to attention.
Tumblr media
“So one hazelnut latte then?”
Having a customer who wasn’t too particular about the concept of latte art may provide an excellent, no pressure opportunity to practice the craft.
An Evening Brew
The youth seemed more nervous than before, and Amon felt a pang of guilt for bringing up his inexperience. He’d been trying to make him more comfortable, but it looked like he’d done the opposite. He worked on keeping his eyes on the menu, at least temporarily.
“I enjoy lattes, but nothing too sweet. I think the hazelnut would be best.” Amon wasn’t much of a chocolate fan anyway, so the mocha didn’t sound very appealing. The mention of latte art intrigued him, however.
Lifting his gaze from the menu, he offered another smile. “I wouldn’t worry too much about it. I never understood the point of latte art, anyway. It’s just going to be destroyed anyway.”

Kaneki’s eyes followed the briefcase, gaze following it as it was placed on the floor. He then realized that he was maybe staring for a moment too long.
“I haven’t been working here very long.” Kaneki confirmed with a sort of nervous laugh.
When asked for a recommendation, Kaneki seemed to put some thought into his response.
“We have a very delicious hazelnut latte. There’s the mocha latte too, which seems to be favored by a number of customers. Charming latte art adds to the appeal of our drinks. If you were looking for something a bit simpler, I’d highly recommend our house roast, which is rather unique to Anteiku.”
Tumblr media
Kaneki gave another nervous smile, this time actually feeling uncertain of his capabilities as an employee, “Well, I guess I should say that our lattes are usually touched with nice latte art, but I’m still learning to… find my artistic talent.”
An Evening Brew
“I’ve never been here before, so I’ll need a menu.” He walked forward and picked the farthest table from the entrance, sitting with his back to the wall so he could see anyone coming or going. The waiter looked nervous, but as if he was trying to hide it.
“You must be a newer member to the staff as well. Don’t worry; I’m sure you’ll do a fine job.” Amon gave him a quick smile, placing his briefcase beside him on the floor before grabbing the menu. There were many varieties to choose from, and he wasn’t sure what exactly he was in the mood for,
“Do you have anything in particular you’d recommend?”

Kaneki nearly froze at the sight of his customer. He recognized this man, and he was with the CCG. He was the dove that Kaneki had told to flee.
“Ah, you can sit anywhere you’d like. We aren’t very busy right now.” Kaneki offered, looking to the rather empty café.
If the dove recognized Kaneki, he wasn’t letting on to the fact. As long as Kaneki could keep himself calm, he shouldn’t bring any suspicion to himself or, more importantly, the café.
The memories of that fight were still fresh on Kaneki’s mind, making him feel a fluttering nervousness I is chest.
Tumblr media
“Would you like to be seated with one of our coffee menus, or do you already know the drink you would like?”
Regulars of the café often didn’t need a menu when being seated, so Kaneki had began asking the more unfamiliar faces to the café if they’d prefer looking over a menu or not.
An Evening Brew
Amon had been looking for a new location to get coffee since losing Mado. He had always gone to one location to get them both coffee, and now he needed a new morning routine to get his mind off of everything. He had passed this charming cafe before, knowing that several college students frequented it. The fact had led him to avoid the location before, but today he truly felt like having a different experience.
The bell jingled as he walked inside, noticing the server coming to help him. “Good morning.” He wore a small smile as he greeted the younger boy, noticing his eye patch. Has he been injured? He wanted to ask, but didn’t want to offend the boy, choosing to remain quiet on the matter instead. “May I sit anywhere in particular?”

“I’m not dying for anyone, Touka-chan. I’m not going to get myself killed.”
He even felt uncomfortable saying it. Kaneki knew where this path could lead. He knew where the pursuit of strength could take him, where his dedication to safeguarding his loved ones’ freedom could go.
But he had to do something with himself and he had to fight. He had to pluck, pluck, pluck away all the bad corrupting this world (his world).
“I’m sorry that my choices are hurting you…” Kaneki softly admitted, “I didn’t want to hurt you. Don’t you understand that something has to be done though? Don’t you understand…”
Tumblr media
Kaneki trailed off.
No, she didn’t. She hadn’t seen, hadn’t experienced the things he’d been through. Growing up as a ghoul couldn’t have been easy for her. She must have seen things that Kaneki hadn’t. But the torture. The tearing of his fingers, the crackling noise of a centipede trapped within your ear…
Going on a date and having your insides scrambled and just getting So. Fucked. Up.
She had a future, she had a life worth living and potential to let flourish. And there was no room for Kaneki to live a life like that anymore.

An Evening Brew
Kaneki focused on the dainty coffee mug as he poured thefresh brew. The shop was close to closing, and he was the only one on duty in the empty shop. It had been a long day, but the café was empty now and Kaneki was taking the opportunity to try improving his latte skills. He still felt that his abilities were subpar to the excellent service Anteiku offered, but he was determined to get it right.
He would repay everyone’s generosity at the café by offering the best service he was capable of.
Tumblr media
The coffee mug was just about to be filled with a beautiful brew when the bell above the door gave a jingle. The sound startled Kaneki out of his concentration and made him jump, spilling some of the coffee and spoiling the near perfect cup he was about to complete.
“Welcome to Anteiku.” He greeted from the counter, a little disheartened by yet another cup of coffee failed.
When he looked up, he realized that he recognized his customer.

‘I wish it hadn’t happened’
Tumblr media
A small frown tugged at his lips as his gaze lowered. He knew exactly what Touka was talking about, knew precisely what was on her mind. Just as she’d wanted to dye his hair dark she wanted the torture erased from his soul. It was a sign of compassion for him, an offer to try to make things right in her own way, for his sake.
But she was wrong.
It couldn’t be erased, and he felt certain that she knew that. He couldn’t undo all that he’d learned no matter what color his hair was nor the coloring of his nails…
He couldn’t just forget who and what he had become.
He could only use it, overtake it as he’d devoured Rize. Grab hold of that uncontrollable power to tame it to his will and use it to protect them all.
Tumblr media
Touka’s next statement snapped Kaneki’s gaze up to meet her eyes.
“No, you’re more—”
You’re more than just a girl who’s brought me coffee, more than just a girl who shoved flesh down my throat when I was too naïve to eat. You’re more, you’re more…
Tumblr media
“Don’t belittle yourself because of my decisions, okay?”
Could he do anything right? Couldn’t he even spare this one person from pain? She was important, and she was important to him, but saying such would only make his absence harder on her. Everything had become so mixed up and he felt like he was just stumbling all over again. He had to do anything to keep them all safe in this dangerous world and to preserve the peace and freedom of Touka’s life. He had to do anything…
Was his decisions somehow….. wrong?

Kaneki didn't comment. It felt odd, going along with this stranger, this human, when he had been digging himself so deeply into the ghoul world. Digging himself so deeply to bury his humanity in favor of strength.
Yet, here he was, going out for holiday sweets with a girl he just met. An acquaintance of Tsukiyama's, even. She didn't feel like a threat, however, and maybe he should just let himself experience something normal every now and then.
Tumblr media
So here he was, entering a cute little shop with chocolates, candies, and a cafe. The sweets looked like art in their glass display cases, and the aroma of fresh coffee filled the air. It did smell good, Kaneki had to admit.
The shop was surprisingly not too crowded, but a few humans did gaze over the candies. One customer was asking for select chocolates to be added to a heart shaped box for a custom package of valentines sweets.
"I've never been here before." Kaneki commented.
Valentine's Day || @ mukadeguru
Finally! He seemed semi-motivated to move and they were making progress. However she kept a tight grip on his sleeve so she wouldn’t lose him.
"Eh? You liked? That’s great I spent hours trying to figure out what to get all my friends for Valentine’s day, so it’s good to get feed back!"
Chie was practically skipping as they walked along the sidewalk. It was such a lovely day and things were going just how she wanted them too. His question brought her from her happy trance. Good thing too or she might have tripped.
"My favourite place to eat sweets! Tsukiyama often takes me there and he gave their coffee four stars. So I’m positive you’ll like it!"
