I think this is a good as time as any to get this headcanon out.
Tumblr media
My Reimu is bisexual with a preference for men, and she very much does experience feelings of sexual attraction. The thing is as a shrine maiden, Reimu practices abstinence and refuses to have sex or engage in romantic relationships.
The idea of Shinto in the olden days is that shrine maidens would be bonded with their gods and forbidden from marrying, but some gods may have been okay with their shrine maidens going out to experience romance and sexual encounters on their own.
However, Reimu has never met her god and solely relies on her faith and her belief in their existence, so there’s no way that she could know if the Hakurei god is even cool with her seeing a man or a woman. Because of this she’s decided it’s better to be safe than sorry, and abstains altogether.

"Ah, I remember that one time when Reimu and I joined forces to defeat the Dark Lord. It's amazing how easy this girl is to convince with some good cooking."
Tumblr media
"Sheesh, it's not like that! There was an actual threat! Besides, your cooking isn't enough to get me back into that tasteless outfit."
Tumblr media
"Tasteless outfit? Reimu, that coat was fashioned from the finest leather from animals that most likely don't even walk this earth anymore. It's an antique more expensive than your entire shrine."
Tumblr media
"Wait, really? You're telling me now? I could have sold it!"

Anyway, broke Reimu is invincible vs the woke Reimu has gotten her ass kicked more times than she can count but manages to get up regardless and keep pushing forward. Her lazy attitude doesn’t tell you that, then the scars she has across her body will.
Tumblr media
I can't be bothered to power scale my characters because for one, that's way too much damn work and two, establishing a power scale takes the fun out of rp'ing and becomes less about writing a story or interaction between two characters and more of a game of dominance.
Touhous are often seen through the lens of "they're all op" and I'm very aware of my own perception of them as well, it's easy to assume them as such considering how powerful some of them can actually get. That's why I try to imagine what kind of flaws they could have and apply them to their character.
I'm definitely not perfect at it, but I like to try scaling them down from the common perception as per my personal preference to do so.

awakenedmaiden:
A stunned silence fell over Satori. Wow. What Reimu said had been truly profound. Perhaps she had been too passive in the way her life flowed. Like a ship adrift without a sail, just going where the current had taken her.
Half a minute passed than another. Satori had become totally silent and unresponsive to the world around her. Lost in trying to take in this wisdom. In trying to consider how she should be steering her life. Eventually she began to speak.
Tumblr media
“You truly are the perfect shrine maiden for Gensokyo, Reimu. Not only have you saved Gensokyo several times but you’re also prepared to share words of advice and wisdom even with a youkai like myself. Truly, it is admirable.”
She reached into a pocket of her blouse. Rummaging around for several moments before producing a set of four coins.
“I don’t understand why you don’t receive more donations, but I can do my part to change that. Here, have these.”
Reimu is a little bit surprised by the reaction that she’s drawn out from Satori using only her words. On one hand she’s glad that she was able to touch someone like that, on the other hand...
Tumblr media
“Come on, it’s not that special. I’m just repeating what my sisters taught me.” It’s a little embarrassing. Reimu never really saw herself as the type to give good wisdom. Seeing the four coins presented to her just might encourage her to curb her self-confidence issues though.
Tumblr media
“I mean, yes! The Hakurei Shrine is the place to go when you’re seeking wisdom from its shrine maiden! Make sure you spread the word, okay?” It only takes a few coins for Reimu to revert back to her usual behavior. She practically snatches the coins from the maiden’s hands.

awakenedmaiden:
The show of support was something that Satori appreciated. She glanced towards Reimu. A soft smile sprouting on her lips. She really had come to the right person for this.
Tumblr media
“Thank you Reimu, I appreciate it, but you’re right. We need to get going before the sun sets.”
Satori set down what remaining treats she had for the cats then gave them a wave. Her feet lifted from the ground as she began to float. She followed Reimu’s lead. Eyes staring out over the horizon for this bamboo forest. Though searching became difficult as Satori found herself enthralled by the beauty of Gensokyo.
The underground was surprisingly spacious all things considered but it lacked the natural environment of Gensokyo. There was also simply so much more in Gensokyo. Mountains, manors, the human village, temples. Getting a view of it from up high like this was breathtaking. Truly the youkai of the surface were lucky to live in such a place.
Tumblr media
“It’s … hard to imagine someone could look out over all of this and still desire to fight. Flying here, I realize just how peaceful the world can truly feel.”
Gensokyo does have a natural beauty to it, one that’s untouched by the modern man and left to thrive in nature. Reimu had only seen the outside world once, and it feels completely unreal compared to her home.
Reimu had heard that the outside world is full of conflict and bloodshed, even to the point that results in an overabundance of spirits. One would think that Gensokyo in its natural state would be a peaceful land, but even it isn’t free of strife.
Tumblr media
“People fight for all sorts of reasons. Not all of them are malicious.” Survival, friendly duels, or honorable sport. Reimu is familiar of the many reasons that humans and youkai wage war and conflict against one another, or even each other.
“Gensokyo is peaceful, but only through conflict are we able to keep that peace. One can’t exist without the other, Satori.” It may be a bit sad to think about, but Reimu’s accepted this as the natural order of life.
“I guess since you come from Hell, you’d only hear about the horrible conflicts from the spirits down there?”

So have Sakuya and Remilia ever dropped a coin in the box? “Ah, right! If you put it that way… youkai extermination is known to be your duty. We’ve also heard you share rather strong opinions about some youkai…” Aya shrugged. “Mostly the gap one, but, well, people do fear what they do not know, and that woman is such a mystery…”
Tumblr media
“Perhaps I’ll find a way to light a path for my readers towards the conclusion that they needn’t fear youkai. After all… you’ve defeated all of them at least once. There’s none you can’t handle. And especially after that… they’ve mostly become rather benign. Would you agree?”
“Well, it’s not that simple. Honestly that sort of thinking can be dangerous. Even though I made the Spellcard Rules with the intent to give humans and weaker youkai a fairer fighting chance, some humans just aren’t equipped to fight them like children, the elderly or disabled.”
Tumblr media
“Youkai are and always will be dangerous to humans. Maybe it’s some kind of natural order, but nonetheless I intend to protect my people. This land belongs to both humans and youkai, so we have to learn to learn to share it.”

tricoloredillusion:
Neo would have assumed that at least the shrine maiden would’ve been used to these kinds of Grimm, but it’s already surprising enough to discover this species, specially because the mute could’ve perfectly assumed these were common here, like Beowolf and Ursa were on the outskirts of Vale.
The dark creatures were a mysterious force of nature, however, so she also knows that the teaching of all the species in studies wasn’t going to cover them all.
The failed strike makes her click her tongue, but the howl of pain from the monster makes her smile slightly- how skilled and resilient these kits seemed to be, and not only that, the moment the bigger one got angry at the attempted kill and started rushing to her position in company of a few more, Neo couldn’t help but wonder if they could feel anything like other animals and people could.
It reacted like a parent trying to protect its babies, but Grimm didn’t reproduce- they were simply born from darkness, did they not?
Even when prepared to defend herself while thoughts wandered her mind, brown and pink opened wide when Reimu jumped in to help her out, not long after taking the advantage in combat, and eventually, even scaring the monsters to go away.
Now, that was another behavior the criminal didn’t expect from them. Since when do they ignore their instinct of being created to kill? Was this another illusion?…
Tumblr media
Recovering her composure, the tension didn’t completely go away, but Neo managed to relax for a second, taking a small breath and sheathing back her blade inside Hush. Looking at the other woman after, the mute let out a content huff accompanied by a little smile- one that was short-lived.
When her mismatched hues ended back on the Grimm that was starting to disappear, the bones it left behind became visible, and it was then that the full tension came back, making Neo’s heart skip a beat and having her take a quick step closer to the remains.
Turning around even faster after making sure she wasn’t hallucinating those, she stared at Reimu with a subtle hint of horror.
Was she seeing the same thing she was?…
Reimu had noted the odd behavior of the Grimm as well, but in the heat of battle her mind was set solely on protecting Neo in the moment. Even stranger is to see the Grimm fleeing after striking one of them down. As far as Reimu is aware, the Grimm only exist to hunt down humanity at all costs with no regards for their own safety.
Still, she’s glad to see that they are fleeing for real and this not being another trick. So it seems that she would be able to relax.
At least... she would. If it weren’t for the horrified look that Neo was throwing her way. At first the shrine maiden glances around them for signs of the enemy, but is soon pointed towards her feet to the remains of the Grimm she had slain.
Tumblr media
Reimu had seen a lot of horrors in her nineteen years. She had been trained to handle facing the horrific aspects of life, but absolutely nothing could have prepared her for the sight in front of her in this very moment.
Startled by what she sees, Reimu takes a few steps back away from the deceased Grimm as the rest of the remains fade away into smoke to reveal dark bone. Not that of a Grimm, but that of a human child. As contorted and broken as they are, they’re easily recognizable as such.
“...What?” The shrine maiden can hardly find the words as she continues to stand next to Neo, stunned. She kneels down and reaches her fingers towards the bone but retracts them before she can touch. These are human bones without a doubt, but Reimu can’t just leave them here.
Instead, she stands back up and begins to remove her sleeves with the intention of using them as a makeshift sack to carry the remains in. She does so wordlessly and in haste, making sure that her skin doesn’t touch the remains whatsoever.

“Indeed. Nobody can fault you for being a hard worker,” Aya commented, turning to face Reimu and taking a seat across from her, keeping her eyes on the objects on the floor a short while before focusing on the shrine maiden.
Tumblr media
“You’re referring to Aunn, right? The one that we didn’t even notice until very recently… the oni, Suika, is also a frequent presence here, isn’t she? And your colleague Marisa is also a common visitor… …”
Tumblr media
“Let’s be fair here, those three and the youkai [ah, and Sakuya] are more easily seen here than human visitors, right? (I’m not trying to make fun of you… but also, humans visiting at night? Unlikely, no?)”
As much as it stings, it’s very much the truth. There aren’t many visitors that come by the Hakurei Shrine, and the few ones that she has are usually non human. Things used to be so much different when there were other maidens at the shrine.
“Well it’s like you said, Sakuya comes by every now and then. I leave the donation box out at night for her, and Remilia I guess. Since they’re nocturnal.”
Tumblr media
“It’s hard to run a shrine by myself, and although my job is to protect humans, ultimately it’s to protect the peace between them and youkai. So if youkai want to contribute to keeping this shrine up and running, then I won’t complain.”

tricoloredillusion:
Smirking slightly to herself, Neo seemed pleased with the result. In fact, the criminal was quick to eye the Grimm that attacked the faux copies, noticing their appearance, and guessing they were simply weaker versions of what the Kyubi was, kind of like comparing an Alpha Beowolf with the regular ones.
It felt like they would have more of a chance to fight these, so the mute readied herself despite Reimu stating that it was the first time she saw them.
This time, Neo let the hidden blade of Hush’s point appear.
When some more of them appeared from the bushes and rushed to attack them, the assassin was quick to move out of the way, opening her parasol in one of the jumps and deflecting away one of the foxes that came to her from the side. It’s only when the shrine maiden starts to shoot some of her slips of the ofuda that Neo thinks of attacking them directly.
She’s always been more of a counter-attacker than a directly offensive one, so she only charged against the beasts when Reimu gave the green light to do so.
Tumblr media
In their weakened condition, it doesn’t take the small woman too much to hit them correctly or even try to stab the creatures with the point of the blade, but as soon as she’s finished with that, she goes back to Reimu, once again letting the opened form of her weapon to push away one of the Grimm that tried to attack the shrine maiden from a blind point.
Deflected, and hit hard once Hush is closed back.
Well, that impulse to protect Reimu was new. Then again, she needs the shrine maiden alive if she wants more chances of surviving this.
Together the two huntresses are much better equipped to defend themselves against these smaller versions of the Kyubi. As far as Reimu knows these things don’t have a name, so she just may be the first to discover the new species. Or more realistically, anyone else who’s come across these kits hadn’t escaped with their lives, which is a morbid thought.
Still, choosing a name for these monsters would have to wait until after they’ve fend them off and returned to safety.
Reimu does her best to keep her eyes everywhere around the battlefield, watching the stalking movements of the kits before they strike as well as Neopolitan’s graceful and unique fighting style as they defend one another.
It’s when Neo rushes to stab the entangled Grimm that it breaks free from the aura-made shackles, and manages to move itself out of the way so that Neo ends up stabbing through its leg, and although not a fatal wound, the Grimm nonetheless howls in pain.
Hearing the small kit howl causes a shift into strange behavior for one of the larger Grimm. It stops for a moment, staring at the scene before letting out a guttural roar and charging right for Neopolitan, as well as the other two joining in.
Reimu only has a few moments to react and save her new ally. She uses her semblance to cast ofuda onto the Grimm and manages to snag two, but the larger one that had started the attack jumps over the the ofuda line and continues its charge to pounce onto the assassin.
Tumblr media
Using her second semblance, Reimu seemingly teleports herself in between Neopolitan and the Grimm and strikes its throat with the base of her palm. This causes the Grimm to falter allowing for a second strike but with the tip of her gohei instead. The impact can be heard by the loud crack of a broken bone. This Grimm isn’t fortunate enough to express its pain, instead collapsing and struggling to breathe.
The other three Grimm after witnessing this suddenly and strangely change their minds, and begin to quickly limp away as fast as they can in their current state. Reimu is too exhausted to pursue, and instead decides to stand her ground until they’re out of sight.
The Grimm underneath her feet however begins emitting smoke from its mouth, and soon after the rest of its body. It slowly begins to fade away, but as it does, it slowly reveals dark ashen bones that had been hiding underneath its hide.
Only thing is these don’t look like the bones of Grimm.

As Aya followed Reimu inside, her eyes fell upon the “mess” on the floor, and she swiftly pointed her camera towards it and snapped another picture. “Don’t mind me, you know it’s in my duties to capture scenes like these for others to see. I can imagine looking at this image in the paper and seeing myself here, among the messy floor of a shrine maiden, hard at work. It’s no lie, pictures do say a thousand words.” Lowering her camera, she leaned forward and studied the items strewn about, nodding and humming.
Tumblr media
“Now, how to begin with the questions… right! From what I’ve gathered from some Outside World periodicals, people love to read about famous persons’ daily routines. Let’s start with that, then. How does a typical day go for you?”
‘This tengu really doesn’t shy away from capturing anything and everything.’ Reimu thinks to herself. As irksome as it may be at times, her documentation skills are what make Aya such an efficient reporter. Admittedly, the tengu’s determination to her passion is quite admirable, and encourages Reimu to undertake this interview even more.
Sitting down across Aya, Reimu gets comfortable before she begins to answer the girl’s question.
Tumblr media
“A typical day, huh?” That probably means no incidents then. “Well, my morning starts with checking the donation box to see if anyone had stopped by during the night. After that it’s time for a light breakfast for myself and the komainu.”
“After that is morning training. Most days I complete my training successfully but other days I just don’t feel like it. Gotta rest sometimes y’know?”

Tumblr media
Her entire team is built around her character from the Windows Era of Touhou. Not PC-98. I actually want to take a moment to explain my choices. For those who don’t know what I’m talking about, this is the post right here.
Shuppet
I chose Shuppet as Reimu’s first Pokemon due to the nature of shrine maidens both in real life and in Pokemon. Shrine maidens in Pokemon follow their real life counterparts very closely, serving as mediums and shamans that channel the word of spirits.
Shuppet in particular was chosen because shrine maidens in real life had a tool known as gehōbako. Supernatural box that contains prayer beads, human or animal skulls, and dolls.
Meowth
This one is pretty self-explanatory if you’re familiar with Reimu as a character. A cat to bring some good luck and fortune to the shrine.
Chimeco
The reason behind Chimeco is the fact that bells are a very common sound to hear at shrines, as well as being used as tools by shrine maidens. They’re used in rituals for spiritual healing or cleansing, so it’s kind of perfect.
Xatu
Xatu is a Pokemon that can see the future, and is the most shaman-like Pokemon that I can think of in this regard. As a psychic type, I don’t think it’s too far fetched to think that it can spot ghosts as well.
Phantump
Another ghost type for the roster. Phantump is a Pokemon that’s the spirit of a deceased child that lost its life in a forest. It’d be a lot less troublesome compared to other ghost Pokemon, so Reimu would be happy to take it in.
Shedinja
I chose this one because not only is it a ghost-type, but also it reflects Reimu’s skills in the Touhou games rather well. Danmaku is a game of dodging, and what better Pokemon to represent that than a Pokemon that can hardly get hit by anything? And like Touhou, it goes down if it gets hit even once.
Now, here are two more Pokemon I would like Reimu to have, but it would be a bit difficult without some space-time shenanigans.
Hisuian Growlithe
Of course regular Growlithe and Arcanine are also based of the legendary lion dogs seen in shrines, but their Hisuian counterparts reflect this much better.
Hisuian Zoroark
Once again, a ghost-type which is what Reimu specializes in. I could see Hisuian Zoroark being a challenge that Reimu has to face, and one that she has to capture. Something to reflect a shrine maiden facing off a very powerful youkai.

“I guess some people are too much, huh.” Parents are usually the first to preach about focusing on school and all so she never thought she’d be hearing the opposite–and that even sounded just as troublesome too.
“Guess I’m thankful that my mom doesn’t nag me on stuff like that, though she does keep telling me to not skip school days. It should be fine so long my grades are decent, no?”
“Yeah! If you’re doing just fine then I don’t see the problem.” She had a feeling that was why Chen would be missing from school every now and then, but only now did she hear the other confirm it herself.
Tumblr media
“Hm... Maybe I should take a day off once in a while.”
