Killings had ceased. James Patrick March, a murder addict, wanted to 'clean up' the image of his hotel.
It seemed he must have forgotten that he built the Hotel Cortez with a number of secret rooms and hidden hallways to carry out his...hobby. The hotel's infrastructure was quite literally created with the intent to hide all evidence of his killings.
His dark desires colored every aspect of his life and subsequent afterlife.
Stopping the violence, though, was something he truly wanted. Just a small break from the barbarism that occurred daily within the hotel's walls. The embargo was a shock to all who resided there. But if the King of Murder commanded it, they figured it was worth a try.
He'd also fallen in love. Rumblings around the place attributed his new intent to stop the violence to her.
Here's the thing, though. They had a point. Y/N was the epitome of innocence. Visually, at least. She came from Kansas. She wore her long soft hair in plaits or down in a half-up hairstyle. Her wardrobe consisted of light colors and a plethora of dresses. Her pink lips and doe eyes screamed 'Who? Lil' ol' me?'
When she learned the truth about the Hotel Cortez, she was horrified, yes. Y/N was largely against killing, as most are, but she never objected outwardly to James himself. He may have heard of her horror through the grapevine, but she wasn't going to try to exercise control over a 110-year-old murderous ghost from the 30s.
James fell madly in love with her. He had tried many drugs in his lifetime, but the only true high he felt was when he was killing people. That was until he met her.
Despite her darling exterior, she had a strange fascination for the macabre. In a fictional sense, though. James was perplexed by the very idea that she was attracted to the idea of murder, but not the actual act of it.
Putting it in layman's terms, she was a fan of horror films.
Being able to pretend the vile activities of the hotel's long-term residents were just fictional plots in a movie helped her separate herself from the reality of it. Horror movies were her escape before her life at the Cortez, and she fell back on them even more after her life adjustment.
She convinced James to move a television set into his suite so she could watch a film or two on occasion. Obviously, though, Y/N found the oldest working television she could. It would help James get used to the idea of the tiny moving picture machine. She called it 'meeting him where he's at.' Mentally, James had not progressed much since the 1930s, which was when he died. She landed on a set from 1976 with an added VCR.
+
California had become densely hot in recent days. It was late July. The smog trapped the sun's rays so oppressively inside the city, it was nearly impressive. If you sat outside for too long, you'd have to scrape yourself off the hot Los Angeles ground.
Y/N spent her days making herself busy in the outside world when she could. James' murder embargo actually began prior to her arrival, so he spared her life, as much as it killed him to do so.
During this heatwave, she was limited to strictly indoor activities, a lot of which involved shopping. Luckily, just down the street from the Cortez was one of the only surviving video stores in the city. They sold most traditional media, actually. Records, cassettes, VHS tapes, and CDs lined the shop walls in an overbearing way. Y/N gravitated to the VHS tapes, naturally, as that was the only 'modern' luxury the hotel afforded her.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Birds, and Psycho immediately jumped out at her. Three great classics she hadn't seen in a while. She walked out with them, pleased with her purchase. She nearly skipped back home, so excited to have some different stuff to watch.
James greeted her at the door when she returned.
'Dearest!' he exclaimed, pecking a kiss on her cheek. 'How were your adventures today?'
'Oh, really pleasant, actually,' she smiled. 'I got these.' She fanned out the three tapes in her hands. James observed them and chuckled.
'Psycho? Massacre? What a strange bird you are, Y/N,' he breathed as he shook his head.
'They're very good films, James,' Y/N tutted. 'You really oughtta give watching one a chance sometime.' She passed him and began putting her things down in the main room. Taking off her shoes, she turned on the television set and hopped up on the couch.
'What I'm more concerned with is the disgusting pig filth group of young people staying in room 213,' James sighed. 'They disgust every fiber of my being.'
'Do you want to talk about it?' she coaxed. James put his hands on the back of his head and paced into the room she was in.
'How ever can you focus when the little people on this thing talk over you, my sweet?' James groaned, joining Y/N on the couch.
'You learn to tune 'em out over time,' she smiled.
'Well, tell them to quieten down for the moment,' he demanded. 'I must think.'
Y/N crawled to the edge of the sofa to get closer to the TV set. She turned the dial and James' 'little people' shut up.
'Now, that is much better,' he stated. He turned to face Y/N and put his strong hands on her thigh. 'What do you say I continue my hobby now?' His eyes were hopeful. He meant murder. He wanted to kill those kids.
'James, please,' Y/N started.
'No, no. I know you are against my...habits,' he began.
'Not against,' she interrupted.
'Averse to my habits,' he corrected. 'But I think it may be time to take up the mantle again.' Y/N looked down at the coffee table. She couldn't meet his eyes. Not when he was like this. But, as if fate itself stepped in, her eyes landed upon the tapes she had set down.
'James, I have an idea, but you have to be patient. And open-minded,' she explained. She rose to her feet and grabbed the copy of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. 'You said young people were bothering you, right?' He nodded. Switching on the VCR, she inserted the tape into the player and waited for it to begin the video.
'My angel, what are you doing?' he asked.
'Helping you out,' she replied, matter-of-factly. He turned his eyes to the screen and squinted at the picture moving across it.
'I don't-'
'Just give it...oh, with this one...a half hour. Watch for that long, and if you don't like it, it can be turned off,' she pleaded.
'Alright, anything for you...' he said unsteadily.
+
His eyes lit up like a child's when the hitchhiker attacked Franklin. He looked over at Y/N excitedly, like a kid seeing Mickey Mouse at Disneyland.
'That was delightful!' he exclaimed.
'Oh, it gets better, love,' Y/N assured him. 'More graphic.'
The movie marched on, with scenes of the young characters being impaled on meathooks, dismembered with chainsaws, and getting their blood sucked by a creepy old man. The final scene, when Leatherface flails his chainsaw in frustration at losing Sally, made James turn to Y/N and grin widely.
'So do you get it now?' she asked as the credits began to roll.
'That was better than I could have imagined,' James cried out. 'We must watch it again!'
'Or...we could try another?' she bargained.
'That Psycho title looks intriguing,' he decided.
'Let's give it a go.'
+
The rest of the night was spent watching gory, murder-filled films as they rested in each other's arms. James sat between Y/N's legs, the back of his head resting on her chest as he watched the films intently. He even stopped to criticize the realism of certain scenes. It seemed to make him forget his urge to kill, if just for a night, at least.
'There are more of these, right?' James asked as The Birds finished.
'What? Movies?' Y/N laughed.
'Yes, for the little box. Different stories?' he continued.
'Oh, as in more tapes for our television? Yes, James, I can go get more,' she chuckled.
'You must! Tomorrow. Buy all of them,' he grinned. 'I need to see more.'
'I'll do what I can,' she laughed.
And with that, her hobby became James' as well. Watching graphic violence seemed to help him abstain temporarily, as long as he wanted to. At the end of the day, there was no high like murder for him. But for a brief moment, fictional murder was enough.

It was a rather oppressive day, heat-wise. One of those sticky hot, thighs chafing, greasy bangs days. The sun shined down in a hazy way on the neighborhood I lived in. As I sat there in my denim shorts and big t-shirt, I reminisced on the days of summer as a child. How I'd spend them with my best friend, Peter.
He was the first person I met when I moved here. I was two, to be fair, so I don't remember much of it all. He's always been a permanent fixture in my life. Someone who was just...always there.
He lived next door. Just like a cliche movie. We would ride bikes and draw on the ground with sidewalk chalk together. He was my second-grade boyfriend. He decided to ‘ask me out’ on the last day of school. He learned in school how to say 'I love you,' in sign language just before he asked to hold my hand on the playground on that day in June. He signed it any chance he could. When his mom drove us home in her minivan that day, he held up the sign. Our little secret.
That summer was pure childhood bliss. Innocence. We really didn't 'break up,' per se. When we entered the third grade that September it was just mutual that we had crushes on other kids. We still stayed friends. I'd hang out at his house after school every day until my parents got home. When the weather was warm, I'd sit outside on my porch waiting for him after dinner. Then, like clockwork, we'd find something to do.
As we got older our activities changed. He taught me how to skateboard. I taught him how to trespass on the baseball fields that were tucked down a back street in our neighborhood. We'd swing on this old tire swing over the stream that ran through our backyards.
In our sophomore year of high school, he bought an old car with dreams to fix it up. A 1965 Ford Mustang. It was rusty, beat up, and had no engine. The windshield was shattered and the inside wasn't upholstered. The only working part of it was its radio. When I walked out of my front door on the day he brought it home, he slapped it on its hood, proudly declaring, 'I'm gonna take you to prom in this thing, baby!' We sat in the old thing all afternoon listening to the radio.
I had known about his abilities the whole time. I never got into foot races with him as a kid for that reason. He would beat me every time. Peter had it under control, for the most part, but only when he wanted to. He started getting brazen with it as a teenager. He'd take me on these wild adventures where he'd steal things. The first time it was just some candy from a convenience store. By the time he got that damned car, he was stealing entire carburetors. These trips took all of 2 minutes. Just the two of us speeding off to create havoc.
Somewhere along the way I fell in love with him. Or maybe it wasn't even that. I can't remember a time when I didn't love him. It changed, though. I started to feel things toward him I'd never felt before. When he'd hold my head to prevent me from getting whiplash as we were making our hasty escapes from his escapades, I'd find chills would run up my spine.
Our beautiful little romance blossomed once he finally got his Mustang up and running. Not that he needed it, really. He was leagues faster than any car. He just wanted to be able to transport more things. And his new girlfriend. We started dating in junior year. He had just gotten his license and took me on a ride one night. We parked down a backstreet in our town and our lips finally met. At long last, his fast fingers were allowed to explore my body in a way I had never allowed him to before. It was wonderful, awkward, and hungry. Everything a teenage love affair should be.
He ended up taking me to the prom in that car, just as he'd promised. He looked so smart in his little tux. We spent that entire summer simply enraptured with each other. Our hangouts transformed from outdoor antics to being tangled in my bed, fan on max speed, windows open to hear the mourning doves sing outside. I can still smell the fresh summer air and the smell of him combining to make something all-encompassing and intoxicating.
It was the next summer on this very hot day. Peter and I had been dating for a year. He was away, hanging out with his friends or something. I was home alone. I sat there on my porch, diary resting lazily on my lap, staring off at the hanging 'FOR SALE,' sign on my yard in front of me . I switched between twirling my pen in my hands and chewing the end of it, deep in thought.
It was always the deal in my house. As soon as I graduated, as the youngest kid in my family, we'd move away again. My parents weren't happy with the town. They knew I had made my life there, but a deal was a deal. I couldn't imagine a life without Peter.
When the sign went up on my front lawn, I began a diary. I was never a writer. I was horrible at keeping up with writing entries in a tiny book. But knowing my life was about to change, I began scratching down every small detail about my life. My time in this house. My childhood. My life with Peter. It was a passion project. I wanted to document everything so I'd never forget.
Peter interrupted my deep inner turmoil. Well, not exactly him. His loud-ass car pulled up, parking in the driveway next door. He stepped out of the car singing, keys jingling in his hands. Like clockwork, his head turned to see if I was on my porch. Our routine since we were kids. In a flash, he was sitting next to me.
'Hey pretty,' he breathed, kissing me gently on my cheek.
'Hey Peter,' I smiled, looking up at him. Whenever he was near me I couldn't help but get wrapped up in him. Swept away in his deep brown eyes and sea of silver hair. There was a palpable feeling between the two of us. Dancing around the topic of me moving away, even though the signs were all around us, literally. It was a tension that colored every moment of our time together, yet we tried in earnest to ignore it.
'Whatcha got there?' he asked, half-taunting, as he usually did.
'Oh, haha,' I blushed, clapping the book shut and tucking the pen inside. 'It's nothing, just a planner.'
'A planner? Y/L/N, when have you ever been the type to schedule things?' he scoffed. 'Gimme that.' He lunged for the diary. I curled my body up tight into a ball, the book nestled safely between my lap and chest. My arms secured it even further.
'Peter! Stop it! I gotta get my shit together,' I whined. 'Like, plan out packing!'
'Packing for what?' he asked sarcastically, still trying in vain to pry the diary from my grasp. In his desperation, he attempted the only trick he had left to get me to let go. He started tickling my sides. It was a surefire way to piss me off, but also to get me to let go. The diary clattered to the ground as I stood up quickly to get away from his hands tickling me at light speed. He paused for a moment to grab the diary off the ground.
'Hey, thanks!' he exclaimed, taking off in a flash inside my house, leaving only the wind behind to prove he was there.
I clamored inside behind him, calling after him as I stumbled up the stairs. He was already laying on my bed, on his side, reading my diary entries when I got to my room.
‘DON’T read those!’ I panted in vain. ‘They’re so bad!’
‘Oh, these little stories?’ he smirked, looking up only with his eyes. ‘I think they’re pretty good.’
My cheeks burned hot. I stepped into the room and slammed the door shut. He held the book up closer to his face and squinted. ‘Peter, please, I’m warning you,’ I pleaded.
‘His tongue slid into me. All of my insides felt warm and tingly…’ he read out.
‘OH MY GOD NO!’ I rushed over to him, trying to pry my diary out of his hands. I was on the bed on my knees doing what I could to get my embarrassing writing back. He and his super speed, though, had other plans. I gave up after minutes of trying, tired of grabbing at a person that wasn’t even there by the time my hands reached him. He stopped his motion and was right back where he started on my bed.
‘I think I got what I needed,’ he smirked. ‘Let me review the highlights with you…’
He moved quickly, without using his super speed, to lay me down my my back. I didn’t object. He was always gentle with me, careful not to use his speed unless I asked him to. Peter hated anything that took a long time, but with me he always had patience. Well, unless it was taking my clothes off.
Peter worked quickly to get every inch of fabric off my body. His smooth hands rubbed all over my skin as he kissed me passionately. He stopped to pick up the diary that had been discarded to the side on my bed.
‘Let’s see…’ he muttered, pinning my shoulder down with one hand, his legs straddling my lap. ‘He spread my legs slowly…okay I can do that.’
The diary was once again dropped so he could part my thighs. His hot breath hovered over my weeping cunt.
‘Right, right, then the tongue part,’ he reminded himself. He kissed all along the insides of my thighs, eventually making contact with my middle. My toes curled and my breath hitched. I was ready for what he was about to do. He slipped his tongue into me and my eyes rolled back. He flicked his tongue over my clit, making me yelp out.
He separated himself from me to grab my diary again.
‘You’re gonna have to read this next part, Y/N, I’m a little preoccupied here,’ he instructed. He passed the book into my shaking hands. I didn’t even have the energy to protest. I just wanted to feel his warmth within me again. His mouth reconnected with my pussy.
‘H-his abilities came in handy when giving me head,’ I panted. ‘He can do this thing- thi- this thing where he vibrates.’ I could only choke out so much in my pleasure.
I felt him take a few deep breaths before beginning to vibrate at sonic speed. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced. The first time he did it, I thought I would just about die. He pulled away for a moment.
‘Keep reading,’ he breathed. I whimpered, shaking hands once again opening the diary. He reconnected with my middle again and I let out a loud moan.
‘He kn-knows how to make m-me purr like a kitten. There’s n-nothing like it,’ I sputtered out.
I didn’t have much left in me. He, acting as my own personal vibrator, brought me to my limit. I came with a loud yelp, laughing immediately after. Peter stopped vibrating and laid on top of me, his face meeting mine.
‘You are SUCH a dick, Maximoff,’ I giggled.
‘I thought it was sexy, how you write about me and all,’ Peter shrugged. He peppered kisses all over my face and neck as we both caught our breath. For a fleeting moment, nothing in the world mattered. All we cared about was each other. For a moment, I wasn’t moving away. It was us and us only. ‘You’re a million miles away, beautiful. What’s wrong?’
Snapping out of my trance, I planted a kiss on his lips. ‘Nothing at all, Peter. Just really ready for round two,’ I smirked.

The second hand moved so slowly on the clock, I thought it might be broken. Class always went slower when I knew I’d be seeing Kit afterward. Thursdays were our day.
My parents didn’t know. They hated the idea of me being distracted from my studies by some silly boy. I was, in fact, sticking my neck out by going to college as a woman, so I had to succeed. But, the new decade called for liberation for us women. I was proving a point by being able to date and do well in school.
I digress. I met Kit after my father's car got a flat. He showed up in his tow truck to save the day.
'Scummy, those mechanics,' my father quipped as we drove away.
I walked to the gas station Kit said he worked at the next day, set on getting him to ask me on a date.
We'd been secretly meeting up for dates ever since. He'd come to pick me up after my last class of the day every Thursday and take me out somewhere. I could, at times, sneak away to see Kit on other days of the week, but Thursdays were a set date. My mother and father had no idea. They thought I would stay late to study.
In my daydreaming daze, I almost didn't notice my classmates getting up to leave. I gathered my things hastily and rushed out of the room and into the bright daylight of the afternoon. The sun's light on the pavement was nearly blinding. I shaded my eyes with my hand as I walked to the curb, looking desperately for Kit's car.
Within seconds, his shiny black car came slowly up to the side of the street.
'Hey, pretty thing! You goin' my way, doll?' he called out of his window, acting as if he were a creepy stranger. I giggled and got into the passenger's side.
'You have no idea how nice it feels to do this,' I sighed, kicking my shoes off as Kit drove off.
'Rough day, beautiful?' He wore his work uniform. Some jeans, a white undershirt, and his button-up with his name on it. His hair was perfectly tousled, and the shirt was unbuttoned so that part of the white undergarment was showing. He looked soft and warm, and his smile lit up his eyes.
'Just a very long one, and I'm starving.'' I said, drawing out the word 'very.' I flipped down the visor and slid open the mirror, smoothing my hair and fixing the line of my lipstick while regarding my reflection. I pulled the tube of peach lipstick out of my bag and touched up my pout, making faces at myself all the while.
'Havin' fun over there?' Kit laughed.
'I'm beginning to think this shade is old hat,' I sighed. 'Maybe I should try red like Marilyn.'
'I don't care what color they are so long as I get to kiss 'em,' he smirked, taking one hand off the steering wheel and placing it on my upper thigh. I didn't even notice how far my dress had ridden up my leg since getting in the car.
I blushed and giggled, tucking the front pieces of my hair behind my ears. I will admit, I was still in the lavender haze with him.
He pulled into the parking lot of the small roadside diner in our town. It was quaint, tucked away in some trees, filled with truckers from out-of-state and old ladies meeting for lunch. It was a stone's throw from Kit's job, and the perfect place to hide away. Somewhere neither of my parents would dare go.
We sat at the tall counter in the center of the place. This was part of our little Thursday routine. I would always come out of class absolutely ravenous. We'd pick far-away or unknown places to eat before truly spending time together.
'You want somethin', my pretty thing?' Kit asked as the waitress stood in front of us.
'Honestly, a milkshake would be a gas,' I smiled up at the waitress. 'Strawberry.'
'That's all you want?' Kit asked as she walked away. 'Are you sure?'
'Yeah, Kit, I'm alright,' I replied, feeling around in my bag for a light for my cigarette. 'Shit, I must have dropped my lighter somewhere. It's not here.'
'Don’t worry doll, I got you,' he drawled, flicking his own open and holding it under the cigarette clenched in my teeth. I took a long drag and exhaled. The waitress returned and placed my drink in front of me, and Kit's meal in front of him.
I looked over at Kit and caught him taking me in. He looked me up and down and chuckled softly.
'My, you are a dream,' he cooed, placing a hand on my chin to bring me in for a kiss. I went in for a peck and was alarmed to find that Kit wanted more.
'Baby, not here,' I said through gritted teeth, pulling away quickly. I looked around to make sure no one saw. 'You're an animal.' I laughed and he returned the smile.
'I just can't control myself around you, pretty.'
'Well then hurry up and finish your food so we can peel out,' I giggled, pushing his shoulder playfully.

There was an old abandoned schoolhouse in town 5 minutes away from my house. Kit and I would find ourselves in the back parking lot frequently. Tucked away from the public eye in his car.
As soon as Kit parked the car, he dragged me into the back seat with him. We made out furiously, like two caged animals that were finally set free. It was a small space, but we sure made it work.
I took over, immediately pushing Kit's back up against the door, placing my hands on his chest to hold him down. His white undershirt was soft against my palms. I could feel his heart pounding furiously beneath my fingertips. A pace that signaled to me just how much he wanted this.
We kissed for only a short time before clothes started getting removed. First, I aided him in removing his work shirt. Then, I worked to undo his belt and unbutton his jeans. He slid them off quickly. I took that time to remove my panties, throwing them hastily to the front seat.
His erection was noticeable through his white briefs. My hand immediately reached to touch it, only for it to be held back.
'Not yet, sweetheart,' he smiled. He pushed me back into the door on my side and continued making out with me. His hands groped all over my body, paying particular attention to my breasts. 'Oh this dress just won't do,' he muttered.
My high-necked smock dress was fit for school, yes, but not for this. He reached behind me and unzipped the fabric smoothly. He tugged the material and it slid down to expose my bra. Kit smiled as he looked into my eyes, then turned his attention back to my chest. He peppered kisses all over my sensitive skin, making goosebumps raise all over my body.
First, he slid my left bra strap off my shoulder, creating a bit more slack and revealing more of my skin. He took his time to kiss all of the areas of skin he hadn't before, going agonizingly slow so that I would get hot and bothered. He loved when I was hot and bothered.
Next was the right bra strap. The ceremony continued. His ritualistic dance of adorning love to every inch of my body made every horrible minute spent without him worth it. His mouth inched closer and closer to the very edge of my bra. Eventually, I gave in to the teasing and reached back to unhook the damn thing myself.
Deciding I'd had enough, though, I pushed Kit back again. This time, all the way down so that he was laying across the back seat. My hand reached for his bulge and stroked it. He whimpered in pleasure. I took the waistband of his briefs in my fingers and tugged, making his dick spring loose.
I lined myself up with him and slid his throbbing erection into my slick middle, feeling every inch of it go deeper and deeper into me. I cried out involuntarily and began bouncing on it, feeling our two bodies connect naturally. My walls tightened around it. He moaned softly.
'Oh baby, yeah,' he spat through gritted teeth as I continued to ride him. I stooped down and kissed him passionately, still keeping a rhythm. His shaking hands reached up to grope my breasts again, this time more firmly. He slid his hands down to my waist and held it, almost as if he were trying to feel some sort of control over me.
I continued moving my hips atop his dick. His length went so deep within me, I thought I'd scream. I put both of my palms on either side of his chest to steady myself. His breathing got more ragged, and I could feel his heart racing still.
'Fuck,' Kit grunted, trying not to come so easily. He gathered what strength he had a lifted me off of his erection by my waist. I sat back and slid down to a laying position as he rose to position himself above me, both of us maintaining eye contact as we went. He wanted a turn on top.
I didn't even get a chance to settle before his large cock was inside me again. I yelped and screwed my eyes closed, existing at that moment at his very will. He held my wrists, which were resting just next to my head, down so that I couldn't move. I whined in protest but was silenced by his lips on mine.
Sweat formed on his brow. I could feel myself succumbing to the waves of orgasm. But, neither of us wanted to be the first to give in. I breathed heavily to steel myself, but it was to no avail. I came first, crying out and moaning loudly. He slid out of me and stroked my hair as the fits of pleasure overtook me.
Kit sat back against the door on his side of the car once again, breathing heavily. I regained my composure and sat up, sitting back on my heels. I stooped down and took his pre-cum covered dick in my mouth. I flicked my tongue over the tip and reveled in the whimpers and cries Kit was letting out. He grabbed and pulled my hair gently as I continued to suck him off.
'I-I'm gonna come,' he mustered, trying to warn me in case I wanted to stop. Instead, I let him blow his load directly into my mouth. I ignored the warmth and bitter taste as I swallowed. He moaned and threw his head back, eventually relaxing into his position. I wiped my mouth and sat back as well.
Recovered from his orgasm, Kit leaned forward and laid half-beside and half-on me, resting his head on my chest. I sighed in contentment.
'God, you're good at that,' Kit whispered, laughing softly. I laughed too. He grabbed my hand and brought it up to his lips to kiss it. He kissed the back of each finger as well to emphasize his gratefulness. He nestled closer into me. I nearly fell asleep listening to his breathing even out.
I gasped suddenly when I looked out the window and saw the sun setting. 'Shit, Kit, we have to get me home!'
We both worked quickly to redress. He helped me with the tough job of zipping up the back of my dress. I scrambled out of the back door and into the passenger door, slamming it shut and bringing the visor down to once again look at myself in the mirror. Kit clambered up to the front from the back seat and settled himself in.
He turned the key in the ignition and started the car up. He paused, though, before going. I looked away from fixing my lipstick for a moment to see what was the matter. Kit shifted in his seat and reached for something that was under him. In his hand was my panties.
'I uh, think you're gonna need these,' he chuckled, blushing. I smacked his arm and snatched them from his grip.
'Oh, hush! Stop! It's not funny,' I protested, half-laughing as well. I shoved them into my handbag demonstratively. 'Now hurry up and drive!'
+
The ride home was quick enough. The sun was still setting as Kit got to the end of my street. He had to drop me there to avoid my parents seeing anything.
'Are you sure you're gonna be okay walking over there this late? I don't need anyone snatching my girl,' Kit spoke.
'I'll be fine, Kit. No one really walks my street. Plus, it's not even that dark,' I assured him.
'Well okay, but I'll be parked here watching ya, okay?'
'Just don't be too obvious,' I warned.
He leaned over and grabbed my face, pulling me in for one last, passionate kiss. When I pulled away, my lipstick was all over his face. I just chuckled to myself and opened the door.
'I love you, you pretty thing,' he called after me.
'I love you too, Kit,' I smiled.

Someone You've Never Seen Before
A Kyle Spencer Fan Fiction
frat!kyle AU, fem!main character, sexual themes, mature language, use of drugs and alcohol, frat boy antics
Tumblr media
19.
Alone, together. Making up for lost time.
My lipstick smudged on his lips after stolen kisses in bathrooms at parties. His arms snaking around me from behind in my apartment's kitchen at 3 am, his chin resting atop my head. Study dates occurred nightly, often devolving into naps, cuddles, kisses, or more.
There in my room, we laid. Way less weekly frat house forays for me. Kyle practically lived at Lily and I's place.
I feared Lily would hate it, with her personal space being invaded, and all. But she really liked him. Her attitude toward him changed after that night when they teamed up to rescue me. It took a bit for her to tell me what went down when they got me back to our place.
"It wasn't what you needed to hear at the time," she shrugged when she finally decided to tell me. From what I understand, it happened a bit like this:
Lily's POV
"She come to yet?" Leon asked from the driver's seat, his tone dripping with concern. His dark eyebrows were furrowed, eyes laser-focused and intent on getting us back as quickly as possible. He directed his question to the back seat, where Kyle sat cradling Hannah's head, preventing it from bobbling around as he hit bumps and took turns.
"Nah, man..."  Kyle trailed off, looking down at her unconscious form. She was limp, eyes cracking open just slightly every so often.
Leon's question pissed me off. Unnecessarily so. "Fucking-  of course she's not awake, Leon. She got fucking roofied."
"Sorry, Lil," he muttered, twisting one of his curls around his finger. He chewed his lip and turned the steering wheel hand-over-hand into the parking area behind our apartment. He let go of the curl and it sprung tightly back into place as he threw the car into park.
Wordlessly, Leon and I unbuckled our seatbelts as Kyle opened the left-side back door. Both of us rushed to aid him in getting Hannah out of the car, but after getting out, he immediately bent down and picked her up bridal style as he did at the party.
"Kyle, we can help," I began, reaching my hand up and brushing a hair out of Hannah's face.
"I got her," he rasped, adjusting his hold and turning in the direction of the building. "Which way's your place?"
I scoffed and rolled my eyes, allowing him to have his hero moment, but only because it was in Hannah's best interest for me not to argue with him. I pointed toward our back door.
"Sh-should I go?" Leon stuttered behind me. "I think he's got it."
I turned around and buried myself in Leon's arms. I couldn't help but need comfort in the moment. It was selfish, but as soon as his embrace tightened around me, I felt a sense of clarity and a new capacity to help. "Thank you, Leon. I love you," I sniffled into his chest.
"She's going to be okay, Lil. I can come in if you need," he said lowly.
"No, go back to your boyfriend. I'm sorry we interrupted your time."
"Oh, hush. Anything for you and Han," he whispered, releasing me and holding me by my shoulders at arm's length, looking into my eyes. "I promise."
"Get back safe," I muttered, turning on my heel to rush after Kyle, who was practically at the door.
I picked up the pace to a light jog, fumbling in my small handbag for my keys. I watched Hannah's head roll toward Kyle's body, resting lazily on his shoulder. His immediate response was to stroke the back of her head, not a thought behind it. I reached the door and unlocked it in a swift motion, hustling in before the two of them.
"Her room is back here," I called out, not even turning the lights on or glancing back in their direction. I swung the door to Hannah's room open and waited by the entrance for Kyle to pass me. He hesitated and took in the room for a split second before taking her over to her bed and placing her down gingerly.
He turned her over on her side and turned away, striding quickly back toward the door. Only then did he hunch over, hands on his knees, and take a deep, shaky breath. My eyes darted between Kyle and Hannah. Hannah and Kyle. Who to acknowledge first? Who to help first?
I deemed Hannah okay enough for the moment for me to be able to check on Kyle. "She's not that heavy," I quipped, forcing a small, dry laugh out of him. I stepped forward and put a hand on his shoulder. "You okay?"
He straightened up stiffly, still facing the exit, rather than her. He took another shaky breath before responding. "Honestly, all that matters to me right now is if she's okay. I don't even know how I am," he uttered. "I know it'll pass, but it's heavy."
"Yeah...it's intense," I agreed, turning my head to stare at Hannah, who looked as if she were sleeping peacefully. Face still like a young child in a deep slumber.
"Can you, uh, text me when she wakes up? I can give you my number," he sniffled. I looked back in his direction and watched him wipe his eyes. He turned his head to look at me and I nodded. "I love her, Lily. I'm sorry, but I do." His eyes were glassy and pleading.
"I do, too," was all I could muster.
"I let go of the illusion that things could have gone any different. She may hate me forever. But I love her," he spoke, just barely above a whisper. " I can't imagine a day I won't."
+
I found home in his arms.
He held me tenderly. I lay cradled in his arms, tracing the veins that twisted their way up them with my finger. My head rested lazily on his chest. His heart thudded quietly beneath my ear.
Kyle slept soundly beneath me. He took a deep breath before shifting slightly, squeezing his arms tightly around me. He then returned to sleeping peacefully.
It was the middle of the night and I couldn't sleep. I couldn't stop thinking about him. Us. He looked at me like there was something there worth looking at. He talked about me as if I put the stars in the sky.
I couldn't believe the boy I thought hated me felt this way about me. That I was lying in his arms planning our future.
It was beautiful. I couldn't have asked for anything more.

18.
As if on cue, someone cleared their throat behind me. Shivers went down my spine. I turned my head and was met with the most piercing brown-eyed gaze. He looked at me with such intensity, I couldn't help but hold my breath.
He stood tall next to me, dressed in a Hawaiian shirt with a white ribbed tank top underneath and a pair of jeans.
"Hey Kyle," Lily greeted with a knowing smile, standing from her seat on the side table. She rubbed my arm as if to say 'This is who it was.'
"Hi. Mind if I steal Hannah from you for a second?" Kyle smiled softly. My eyes remained trained on him as he interacted with my best friend.
"Not at all," she replied, pushing my arm lightly as she walked away. I quickly cast a pleading look in her direction, but she didn't see. Turning my attention to Kyle, I said a quiet prayer that this was going to go well.
"I've been trying to find you all night," he spoke lowly, looking deeply into my eyes.
"W-why?" I stammered. I looked quickly to my left, hoping to find comfort in Lily's presence nearby, but instead, she was nowhere to be found. She must've known what he was doing, otherwise, she wouldn't have left me.
"I saw Julian try to talk to you earlier. I wanted to make sure you were alright," he mumbled. "We uh, also - Hannah, need to talk."
"I don't disagree with you on that," was all I could muster.
"Do you wanna, I don't know, maybe go somewhere more quiet?" Kyle suggested. "That sounds creepy, I just mean-"
"No, yeah, I'm okay with that," I murmured. I could see that my change of heart was unexpected. I could tell he expected me to tell him to fuck off.
"Let's just uh, leave, I guess," he stammered. I nodded, then proceeded to follow him outside, past Lance, and down onto the sidewalk. I walked alongside him for a few moments before he paused. "Wait, where are we going?"
"We could go to mine," I offered. "It's literally one block this way." I pointed to my right.
"That's fine."
I shot Lily a text on the way there, letting her know what was going on, although I think she had it all figured out. Kyle nor I spoke a word for the rest of the walk.
We got to the door of the apartment and I nearly forgot how to work a key to open the door. When I finally got it open, his eyes widened slightly at the sight of our place. He had never been, so I was sure it was jarring for him.
He settled in on the couch. I discarded my angel wings by the door and turned on some music to ease any tension, but it seemed unnecessary. Or maybe distracting. We really did need to have a serious conversation. I noted how soft he looked in the warm lighting of the room. I crossed the floor and sat on the opposite end of the sofa from him, my feet planted firmly on the floor in an attempt to keep them from running away.
"This is a - uh, nice couch," he muttered, running his hands over the upholstery next to him. I cocked an eyebrow
"Yeah?" I laughed wryly. "I, -uh stole it off the side of the road. Cleaned it, of course. Loved the color. Purple's my favorite." Overexplaining my couch and its origins. Nice going, Hannah.
"It's soft, uh, I don't know," he chuckled. "I'm just a fan of couches." He shifted uncomfortably and shook his head at himself while looking down at his lap.
"L-look-" I started.
"I just-" Kyle spoke at the same time. He exhaled and looked up at me. "You first."
"I was just going to say that, uh, thanks," I uttered, unsure how to string my words together. "Thanks for, like, the other night. L-lily told me what you did."
His eyes softened. He sniffed, rubbing his nose with his thumb and index fingers. "I'm just glad you're okay," he replied, his voice barely a whisper. "Timing was good on our part."
"And you somehow knowing where I went," I jabbed, slightly sarcastic.
He cleared his throat and laughed slightly. "I may have seen you go in there, yes."
"Spying on me, Spencer," I taunted, poking his bicep. Except, he didn't smile. In fact, he sobered, his expression changing to one of complete and utter seriousness. He looked down at his hands in his lap.
"I'm sorry, Hannah. I can't even begin to explain how sorry I truly am," he spoke, his voice catching on his words.
"Kyle-"
"No, I know. I know it sounds like bullshit. I know that sorry is what I should say. I know that no number of apologies will take away what I did," he interrupted. "Listen, Hannah," he leaned forward to better meet my eyes. "I'm so tired of the frat act. I'm some blonde guy who wears frat polos and khakis. I hang around with douchebags. You're, like, so fucking cool. You're so above all of the college social politics. The bullshit I deal with every day."
I couldn't help but scoff at his words. I pulled my feet up from the ground to sit cross-legged on the sofa and turned to face Kyle entirely.
He continued, after a beat of silence. I didn't speak. "You're cool without trying. That's the thing. You just have it all figured out. And I know you're above all the frat garbage. You know it, too. I see the way you looked through me from the beginning. You still do. But worse now."
"Kyle, that's not-"
"You've always been someone I needed to know. I have never wanted anyone's approval more," Kyle spoke lowly. "Do you realize that your smile is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen? You don't give it out easily. Not many people get to see it. But when you smile at someone, it's like- the greatest reward in the history of the world."
I shook my head, bewildered. "I- I guess I didn't realize you'd noticed me before."
"Noticed?" he scoffed. "This is going to sound so lame, but I felt like I wouldn't be able to win you over. I'm an insecure frat guy. That stupid fucking bet meant nothing. I wanted to know you. All along. My pride was hurt when I agreed to it. When you, uh, yelled at me at that party."
"I-"
"But I wanna be someone you've never seen before," Kyle professed, leaning forward and putting a hand on my knee. "I want you to know the guy behind what you see. Behind your preconceived notions of me. The guy that totally hates what he did to you."
"I don't know what to say, Kyle I-" I trailed off, shaking my head, staring deeply into his genuine gaze.
"When I saw you in that room with him on top of you, god, I could have murdered him," he murmured. "But I realized in that moment just how strongly I feel toward you. It hit me that somewhere along the way, I fell so fucking in love with you. My heart is so full of you, I feel like I can't even call it my own."
I leaned into his face and pressed my lips to his. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out by The Smiths started playing over the living room speaker. Kyle relaxed into my touch and scooted closer to me, wrapping his arms around me. We made out hungrily for what felt like both a second and an eternity.
He then leaned forward even more, guiding me to lay back, and positioning himself on top of me. I pulled at his overshirt, encouraging him to take it off. He looked down at me as if to say 'You sure?' then pulled the fabric off smoothly and threw it across the room.
Kyle's body was way more athletic than I had imagined. We had made out many times before, but we had never gone this far. The muscles in his toned shoulders were apparent. His biceps were large and the veins in his arms protruded visibly. His strong hands found their way to the top of my dress, and without thinking, I sat up slightly to tug the straps off and pull it down, exposing my bra.
Suddenly feeling exposed, showing my bra in the front room and all, I stopped kissing Kyle. "We uh, we should move to my room," I whispered, smiling. "Just in case Lily comes home."
"I don't know that I can wait," he rumbled, stooping down to pepper kisses up and down my neck and chest.
It was in my best interest to protest, but the feeling of his soft lips upon my breasts put me in a trance. I pushed his head back, though. "I will simply die if she walks in on this. Let's go," I demanded. He hopped off of me and helped me up. I led him back into the apartment and opened the door to my room for him. He walked through and swiftly grabbed me, pulling me in roughly behind him.
I gasped as he pushed me backward, pinning me up against the door, and clicking it shut with my body weight. As his lips met mine, I fumbled behind me, locking the door.
I felt my way down to his pants and palmed his erection through the fabric. He whimpered at the touch. I undid the button and unzipped his jeans, and Kyle took the work of pulling them off of himself. I took that time to slide my dress all the way off, tossing it behind me. He stopped to regard me in just my underwear. He chuckled and shook his head.
"What?"
"You're so fucking hot," he breathed wrapping his arms tightly around my waist and walking me over to my bed. We both flopped down, I on my back and Kyle on top of me once more. I continued kissing him and put my hand down his boxers.
"Okay?" I asked. He nodded in reply, inhaling sharply when my fingers wrapped around his cock. I pumped his erection, reveling in his moans and whines.
"Fuck," he spat. I removed contact, making Kyle grunt loudly.
"One sec," I whispered, reaching back to the side table next to my bed. I fumbled with the drawer, opening it to grab a spare condom. I handed it over with a smirk. "Didn't think I'd ever use these but damn am I happy to have 'em right now."
"Thank god you remembered," he sighed. He slid his boxers down and opened the package with his teeth, guiding the rubber over his member. Then, he pulled my panties down and guided my legs apart. I yelped when I felt his dick enter me. It was much larger than I anticipated.
"You okay?" he panted, beginning to hit his stride.
"Mmhmm," I affirmed through gritted teeth. I threw my head back, feeling my walls tighten around him. His thrusts got deeper, hitting the innermost parts of me. We both grunted, gasped, and moaned at the contact.
"Shit, I'm gonna come," Kyle groaned. He stroked a few more times before coming with a whimper. I felt warmth spread in my middle. He pulled out and stood to clean up. I laid on the bed for a moment, watching his toned back ripple under his thin tank as he pulled his boxers back on.
He handed me my own underpants upon his return, a shy grin on his face, and a pink flush in his cheeks. I chuckled at him as I slid them back on. He spun around and continued searching the floor for something.
"Are you looking for your shirt?" I asked, noticing his struggle. "It's in the living room."
"Ah, fuck," he replied quietly. "I don't need it." He joined me back in bed, snaking his arms around my middle.
"Holy fuck," I gasped, something dawning on me. I whipped my head to face him. "Your costume tonight. You were Romeo. 1996 Romeo and Juliet."
"Your best friend tipped me off," he said with a wink. "It's a favorite of mine as well."

Learn to let go of what's not meant to be held.
It's easier said than done, but it must be done. It's something that carried me through the days leading up to Halloween. I felt that any feelings toward Kyle, negative or positive, were not meant to stay. I used everything I could to distract myself.
I didn't dare look in his direction during class on Monday. The goal was to remain transfixed on my note-taking. I listened to music wherever and whenever I could, avoiding Sonic Youth like the plague for obvious reasons.
Lily took me everywhere she went if she and I didn't have class. We took a trip to a nearby shopping center to get our Halloween costumes in order.
"Hannah, would this cover my ass?" Lily asked, holding up the shortest red pleather skirt I had ever seen.
"Not a chance in hell," I laughed, turning my attention back to the rack I had been flipping through. She sighed loudly, dropping her arms down to her sides. "Wear shorts underneath. Or bloomers."
"It took me this damn long to find a red skirt, how will I find red shorts for underneath?" she whined, exasperated.
"Get your ass to work, Davies."
She planned to be a cute little devil, complete with horns and a pitchfork. She had already bought a headband with dainty sequined horns fastened on it and a black bustier top embellished with chunky red rhinestones. I, of course, was to be the angel. I already found a small pair of white wings.
My idea was to be an angel in the way Juliet was in the 1996 movie version of Romeo and Juliet. So when my eyes landed upon the long, empire-waisted white dress on the rack, I nearly squealed in the middle of the store.
Lily got invited to a party that was to be at the TKE house on Halloween. She asked me, very delicately, if I'd like to attend it with her. While my every instinct was screaming "no," I kept true to letting go of things that were not to be held. While my fears over what happened were very real, I did not want to rot away in my apartment for the remainder of my college experience.
Thursday, aka Halloween, was spent skipping class and running last-minute errands. We bought some red lipstick for Lily, a pack of rubber bands for my hair, and most importantly, liquor. I would only feel safe if we were drinking our own liquor.
We sat getting ready in my room, Lily sitting on the floor, my full-length mirror just inches from her face as she leaned in close to paint on some eyeliner. I sat at my desk with a tabletop mirror, creating two small braids in my hair that I would form into a halo with pins and elastics. Arctic Monkeys albums played softly over my small speaker.
"How are you feeling?" Lily asked, breaking the lapse in conversation.
"Me?"
"No, the other person in this room right now," she snarked. I turned to look at her. She had moved on to brushing blush over her cheeks. I opted for minimal makeup, so I was already done. She still needed her hair done.
"I'm a little nervous, I guess," I admitted, "but I think this will be fun."
"Just let me know if you want to leave and we will. No questions asked," she said sternly. "I'm not playing any games tonight. I will kill a motherfucker if I have to."
I pinned down one braid and dropped my hands into my lap, then turned to face her. "I love you, Lily. Seriously. You are my best friend."
"Don't on me with the sentimental shit right now, Martin. I will kiss you," she joked, turning to face me.
"I dare you," I replied, then breaking out into a fit of laughter.
We got to the party around 11. It was already in full swing. We got rather drunk while pre-gaming at the apartment, so no part of me cared about how crowded it was. I guessed everybody's week must have been tough, though. Everyone was drunk, loud, or pissed off.
On the front stoop alone, there were two sets of people arguing about god knows what. The front door opened to a barrage of music and voices. It smelled of latex and hairspray with all of the Halloween costumes inside. We found a place to settle in the second living room along the wall.
It wasn't long before Lily found someone she knew and disappeared into the crowd. Not before asking me if I would be okay alone roughly thirty times. I insisted everything would be fine. I was confident I could find someone to talk to.
I meandered around for a while, stopping here and there to chat with a few people I vaguely knew. It was when I crossed into the kitchen, though, that my stomach turned. Standing next to the doorway I had just walked through was a tall figure.
"Hey, angel," his deep voice spoke. This voice was low and quiet, he said a secret no one else but me could know. I turned my head to my left slowly, my gaze landing on Julian's deep, tired eyes. His full lips curled into a wry smile.
Before, the way he towered over me was endearing. Something that gave me butterflies. At this moment, though it felt downright terrifying. Suffocating, even. He could easily overpower me and cause me harm.
Without a word, I turned on my heel, crashing into the poor girl in the cat costume standing behind me. "S-sorry, I-" I stammered, placing a hand on her shoulder to steady myself before bolting for the front door.
The night was cool. I rushed to the edge of the stoop where there was a railing and gripped it for dear life, letting the cold metal remind me I was on Earth. I took in the fresh air of the night, but it was soured by a cigarette smell, making it clear that I was not alone. A boy with a mop of tight curls smirked over at me.
"Wanna smoke?" he offered, holding out his cigarette to me. "You look like you need it."
"Fuck it," I muttered, grabbing it from him and taking a long drag. I handed it back to him and blew a large cloud of smoke out into the night.
"You're Hannah?" he asked, unprompted, before taking a drag.
"Yes...what's it to you?" I inquired, brow furrowed. I was growing tired of men and their stupid attempts to talk to me.
"I'm Lance. Lance Hamont," he answered while exhaling smoke. He held out the cigarette for me again and I took it. "I'm in KLG."
I took a drag and blew it out upwards. "Right, right. I don't think we've ever formally met."
"Yeah, I've just seen you a lot is all. Guess that's how I knew you'd need a smoke," he chuckled.
"Oh?"
"You know, dealing with Kyle and all," he shrugged before inhaling more smoke. "I've seen you come through the house a lot this semester." His voice sounded funny as he tried to hold in the cigarette's vapors.
"That was for a project, that's all" I answered quickly, trying to end the Kyle subject. "He was my project partner for a class."
"Really?" he asked, cocking his head. "You weren't dating? The amount he talked about you I figured you were."
"Talked about me?" I exaggeratedly repeated. I reached for the cigarette and he handed it over. I took in a large puff of smoke and held it in for a beat longer like Lance had just done.
"Oh god, all the time. Just this week even," he scoffed. "You two close at least?"
"Not really," I trailed off, growing despondent. I handed him the cigarette back while staring off into middle distance.
"Damn," he laughed. "He's always mentioning 'Hannah' -er, you, in conversation. That's weird."
"Yeah..." I whispered, backing up a few steps before turning to walk inside. "Thanks, Lance."
"You owe me a smoke next time I see you!" he called after me.
I don't even smoke. I replied in my thoughts.
I found Lily in the front room sitting on a side table. She was talking to a girl in a cute sailor costume. I grabbed her shoulder to make my presence known.
"Hey, baby!" she exclaimed. Party vibes had already gotten to her. "Maddie, you've met Hannah, right?"
"Yes!" the sailor, Maddie, smiled. I didn't remember meeting her ever, but I returned the smile and nodded.
"Right," I grinned.
"I was just talking to the most interesting person, Hannah," Lily smirked, raising her eyebrows. Maddie got bored and turned away to speak to someone else. "He was asking how you were."
"God, I can't even deal right now," I groaned. I screwed my eyes shut and tilted my head back. The night was already annoying enough as it was. No answer she was going to give me was going to make things any better.
"Who was asking about me?"

16.
I awoke on my side. I could only open one eye at first, the second wouldn't quite follow suit. What little light there was in the room caused me to wince in pain. A radiating migraine settled into the left side of my head. My mouth was stiflingly dry, almost as if I hadn't drunk anything for days.
Shifting sunlight cast strange shadows on the wall next to my bed. Next to my bed. Both of my eyes shot open, a surge of adrenaline going through my body. I could feel someone next to me in bed, which made my stomach drop.
Who brought me home? I thought, mind frantic for any fragment of a memory from the night prior. But after talking to...someone...I couldn't remember who, nothing came up. Not a single moment after. It was entirely disorienting and sickening. I gathered the courage to turn my body to face who was in my bed, my mind racing with options of who it could be.
It turned out to be the person I least expected to find in my bed the morning after a party. Lily.
She lay awake on the right side of my bed, on her side facing me, as if she'd been watching me. She perked up when we made eye contact.
"There you are, Hannah," she smiled, reaching out to touch my face gingerly. "Welcome back."
"Lily," I tried to say, but it was a soundless attempt. Nothing came out but a pathetic croak.
"Jesus, sorry," she half-laughed, sitting up and grabbing a water bottle off of the right bedside table. "Drink this."
I took in large sips, still lying on my side, thirsty for a reason I couldn't even fathom. The water was a welcome blessing, washing over the cracked, dry desert that had formed in my throat. "Fuck," I managed after a final gulp of the liquid.
Lily laughed delicately before reaching over and rubbing my back. "Are you feeling okay?"
"Fucking head hurts," I mumbled. "Can't remember anything."
"That's what I expected," she sighed.
I sat up, ignoring the blistering pain in my head protesting the action. Panic rose in my throat as I tried to think back to anything that happened the night prior. My stomach churned in a disgusting, seasick kind of way. "Lily, I can't remember anything," I said, quickly, my voice shaking. "What happened? What did I do?"
"It's okay, it's okay," she whispered, scooting closer and wrapping her arms around me. "We took care of you. We got you home safe. Nothing too bad happened."
"What happened?" I pleaded, eyes filling with tears.
"I'm so sorry, Hannah. You got drugged," she uttered squeezing me tight.
"Who? I'm so confused," I cried, feeling utterly helpless and empty, paralyzed by a disorienting lapse in memory. I sat, frozen in Lily's grip, trying to process what she had just told me.
"Julian Garcia. Do you remember talking to him?" she answered.
I rocked forward a bit, that name making a slight remembrance bubble to the surface of my thoughts. Jules. Yes, I spoke with him. "Y-yes," I replied hesitantly. "We talked. I remember that."
"We found you in his room. He didn't do anything, we're sure of it," she explained. "Well, besides roofie your drink. He didn't have time to touch you."
"Time?"
"Before we realized something was wrong and went to find you," she continued. "I'm so glad we did. I had your phone and everything. Fuck, Hannah, it was so intense."
I sharply inhaled and blew the air out through my nose, chewing my cheek as I processed her words. Something about her recollection nagged at the back of my mind. Then, it hit me. "W-wait, who is we? Who were you with?" I asked abruptly. I moved and she released me from her arms, giving me the ability to turn to face her.
Lily chewed the nail on her thumb before scratching the back of her neck and sighing. "Kyle," she answered in a barely audible mumble. My gut twisted.
"Sorry?"
"Kyle. Your Kyle," she said, clearer this time. She scoffed and shook her head. "It was insane. He broke the door down. Like, physically kicked the door in to get to you."
I screwed my eyes shut and cocked my head to the side, waiting to wake up from the dream I was very obviously in. However, when I opened them again, Lily was still in front of me with that same concerned look on her face. "Kyle was there? What?" I questioned. "How?"
"The timeline goes like this if you're ready to hear it," she began, clasping her hands together right below her chin. I nodded, trying to fathom how all of this made sense. "Apparently, Kyle saw you talking to Julian in the living room when he got there. A bunch of people were crashing the mixer at that point, that's why he was there. Then, Kyle saw Julian lead you into his room." I nodded, the fact that Kyle was watching me dawning on me.
"Okay," I uttered, still nodding to myself while staring off into middle distance. It was insane to me that all of this was simply...gone...from my brain. None of this followed me to the morning.
"I got a weird feeling about things. I usually keep an eye out for you and I couldn't see you anywhere. And I had your damn phone," Lily continued. "I wasn't drunk yet so I started to worry. I went to look for you in the basement when I saw Kyle. I don't know why, but I figured you might be with him, yelling at him or something, I don't know."
I laughed audibly. "If I had seen him there, I probably would have," I scoffed wryly.
"He said he saw you go into Julian's room so I ran upstairs, but he followed me. He showed me which door you went into. The door was locked and no one answered when I banged on it," she went on. "Then he had the clever idea of putting her ear to the door and I guess he heard something, I don't know. He told me and everyone around us to step back and he literally kicked the door in. Then he punched Julian. Then he carried you out of the house and down the street."
"Fuck," I muttered, sitting up a bit straighter. My head was spinning for a number of reasons, but Kyle rescuing me was at the top of the list.
"Leon drove us home. Kyle stayed with us until he saw you safely in bed," Lily whispered. "Are you okay?"
I covered my face with my hands, applying pressure to my eyes before rubbing my palms in circles. When I put my head up, I was crying again. "I'm great," I sobbed, flopping forward to put my head in her lap. She rubbed my head gently. "Thank you for saving me, Lily."
"You're okay. It's okay. Kyle really deserves the credit. He really saved you."
"I don't even know what to say to that," I whimpered, tears stinging the back of my eyes. "That just makes things worse. I'm supposed to hate him."
"I know. I know," she cooed. "For now, let's just focus on you. Let's take care of you."
+
Monday rolled around quickly. Life doesn't stop for you. It doesn't stop after bad things happen. You have to resume your life as if things didn't occur, still carrying the goddamned heavy burden around with you.
That's exactly what I did. I walked to class, sat in my new spot, and did my best to focus without paralyzing fear permeating every fiber of my being. I didn't want to see Julian, and I sure as hell didn't want him to see me.
The entire time in class, though, I couldn't help but stare down at Kyle rather than the board. By saving me, he not only made things more complicated, but he also rubbed salt into a still very fresh wound. If he was only playing boyfriend, then why did he care enough to watch me? Were his actions an attempt at acheiving absolution? I didn't want to speak to him, but I wanted clarity.
Looking at him hurt.
The week trudged on. I didn't get a text from him on Thursday. I figured he must have given up on me.
I spent the weekend in the apartment, trying to put the pieces of my sanity back together. Nothing felt right. I wanted so badly to hug Kyle and thank him for what he did, but I also wanted to punch him hard and make him bleed.
I didn't hate him. I didn't hate him at all. In fact, I wanted to go back to before I knew things were fake.
Every man I saw after being drugged had horns and tails and little red pitchforks. They terrified me. All of them except him. His blonde hair formed a halo around his head that glowed and shimmered. I wanted to reach out and touch him. I wanted to feel safe. But I couldn't. There was no part of me that was willing to swallow any pride. He hurt me after all.
Yet, two things kept coming to my mind. You must stay close to those who feel like sunshine and wrap you in warmth. And what's meant to be will always find a way to be.

Someone You've Never Seen Before
Two chapters in one night??? What??? Grace, are you okay???
Tumblr media
Yes, and yes. I was particularly inspired tonight. Enjoy 'em! They have some yucky-ish themes, so read with caution (or not at all if you're uncomfy!)
I also tried something different with chapter 15, heehee.
Thanks for the continued support!

*TW for this chapter: Proceed with caution if SA-themes trigger you. If things don't seem right at a party, find a friend! Get out of the situation. And make sure you cover your drink!*
KYLE'S POV
I got to Kappa Alpha around 10 p.m. I got coerced into going by Lance, one of my brothers, while eating a late-night snack in the house's kitchen. In the dim light of the room, he begged me to come with him between gulps of milk (drank straight from the carton, mind you) as I ate an apple.
Submitting to his will, I threw on some jeans, and a pair of sneakers, and left to begin yet another weekend of drinking. That was about all I knew how to do anymore.
The KA house was already almost at capacity when we got there. I wasn't sure of the details of the party, just that there was one, and that it was at KA. I followed Lance blindly, and there I was. Some people were dressed way too nicely for a regular function, which led me to believe that this may have been the afterparty for a formal.
I slithered through the droves of people, saying hi to people I recognized as I went. I wanted to get to the drinks, and I wanted to get to the drinks fast.
Then, there she was, leaning against the wall in the living room, wearing a pretty dress. She spoke closely with a decently tall guy. I tried to make out who it was without staring too hard. I decided to temporarily pause my quest for a drink and have a little stakeout. Seeing her there, so happy, made my chest hurt.
I spotted a place on a couch against the opposite wall and set my sights on it. I settled there for the moment, finding myself in a front-row seat to a scene I didn't want to see. Julian Garcia chatting Hannah up.
I knew of Julian, but not much at all. I knew he was KA. I knew he was a senior. But that was about where my knowledge stopped.
He bent down dramatically to speak to her, in my opinion,  trying to appear taller than he truly was. I thought I might hurl. Although, he was more her type. I could see it instantly. The glimmer in her eyes as she took him in hurt to look at. She was different. He was, too.
My breath hitched as I watched him touch her, both of his hands holding onto her shoulders. Then, he spun her around and began guiding her through the sea of people toward the wall the couch I was sitting on was on. I shrunk down in the seat, still keeping an eye on the two. Julian produced a key from his pocket and unlocked the door in front of them. I felt sick seeing him pull her in and shut the door behind them.
It hurt to watch her enjoy someone so much. I wondered if she enjoyed her time with me that much. I felt homesick for arms that didn't want to hold me anymore.
Deciding I couldn't take it anymore, I stood quickly and walked with determination to the kitchen.
The dining room table had become a makeshift pong table. The counters were littered with bottles of beer and liquor. I spotted Lily Davies in the corner, watching the pong game. I made a beeline for the beer, grabbing one, twisting the bottle open swiftly, and knocking it back.
+
"Kyle?" a panicked voice asked from behind me. "Kyle!"
I turned around in the wrong direction at first, so I backtracked, finally seeing Lily standing behind me in the basement. Her face was contorted with worry. "Hey, uh, Lily." I migrated to the basement to get away from the possibility of seeing Hannah and Julian flirting. Seeing Lily Davies took me aback, though. Hearing her address me shook me even more.
She's here to yell at me, I thought. She's here to tell me off for what I did. I don't blame her. She should just hit me. I'm such a-
"Is Hannah with you?" she yell-asked sternly over the loud music.
I looked around, dumbfounded. "N-no?" I answered, utterly confused as to why she'd be asking.
"Fuck, okay," she groaned. "I don't know why I even asked you." The way she spat the word "you" hit me like a knife to the heart. It only confirmed that Hannah hated me.
"Why? What's going on?" I asked, concerned.
"I can't fucking find her," she shouted, looking down at her phone.
"Have you tried texting her?" I suggested, trying my best to help and maybe right a wrong.
She scoffed and rolled her eyes. "A world of good that would do, huh?" she snarked, producing a second phone, Hannah's phone, from the front of her dress. "She gave it to me when we got here."
"I- I can help you look, or-"
"Something just feels wrong. I don't know. Something feels wrong," Lily rambled. "No one can tell me where she is, like, no one's seen her."
"I've seen her," I asserted, my eyes growing wide. "She went into Julian Garcia's room last I saw."
"Oh my god!" she yelled, exasperated. "Lead with that, Spencer!" She turned on her heel and stormed toward the stairs. I followed her, because she was right, something felt wrong. Her short-statured form led the way, parting the crowd as she stomped into the living room. She stopped dead in her tracks in the middle of the room and then turned around to face me.
"What?" I asked.
"Fucking following me, Kyle?" she spat.
"I- listen I'm sorry, but if you feel like something's wrong then I feel like something's wrong, I- I-"
"You never told me which room is Julian's. Is he upstairs?"
"N-no his door is right over there," I replied, pointing in the direction of the room I had just seen Hannah disappear into under an hour ago. Lily spun around again and walked quickly toward the door. Once again, I followed.
She tried the knob to no avail. She shook it a few times before giving up. "I can't fucking get it open!" she yelled. Her fist made forceful contact with the door multiple times.
"Let me try," I said, calmly, gently guiding her out of my way with the back of my hand. I grabbed the doorknob and attempted to turn it. It didn't budge. I beat my palm on the door a few times before resting my ear against it, trying to hear what was going on inside.
It was silent at first. Then I heard a female voice whimper. They're fucking, I thought, rolling my eyes. The thought was cut short, though, by a male's harsh voice. "Shut the fuck up!" he hissed. My stomach dropped. Shit. Shit.
"Lily, move back," I warned through gritted teeth, as calmly as I could. "In fact, get the people around this door to move the fuck back."
Lily stumbled backward with a horrified look on her face and began pushing people away from me. I stepped back and took a deep breath, steeling myself, trying to remember what I had learned on the internet. Right next to the knob. Next to the knob. You got it. Go.
I planted my left foot and kicked the door with my right, right next to the doorknob. It flew open flimsily.
The scene inside stole my breath and made my head buzz with rage. Julian was on top of Hannah, his hand planted firmly over her mouth. She was clothed, but probably wouldn't have been for long. Julian's head snapped up, a sinister expression on his face.
"Get the fuck off of her," I screamed, charging the bed. Julian flipped off of her and scrambled to stand in the middle of the room, his hands up in the air.
"Hey, man, I don't walk in on you when you're trying to fuck," he contended.
I glanced over at Hannah and saw her, eyes closed, moving sluggishly with a pained expression on her face. She tried to flutter her eyelids open, but she couldn't physically keep them that way for long.
"There's something wrong with her. What did you do to her?" I shouted, seeing red. He didn't reply. I started toward him. "What the fuck did you do to her?!"
"She's just too drunk, man," Julian tried, a disgusting smirk on his lips.
"Don't fucking lie!" I yelled, getting in his face. I lowered my voice and through gritted teeth spoke again. "If you tell me what you gave her, I won't call the fucking cops."
He laughed sickly. "Just a roofie, dude," he answered, nonchalantly. "It's no big deal."
Blinding, white-hot rage shut my brain off. It only came back when my fist made contact with Julian's cheek. He stumbled backward and held his cheek. I rushed over to Hannah, who was still slowly writhing in his bed and scooped her up bridal style.
"Fuck, oh my god, fuck," Lily repeated, panicking, as she followed me, carrying Hannah, out of the house. "Kyle, oh my god, is she okay?"
"I don't know yet," I muttered, not seeing anything beyond Hannah, the ground in front of me, and the empty sidewalk just a few yards away from the house. Away from the chaos. I knelt down as soon as I got there, cradling Hannah gently.
"Hannah!" Lily cried out, rushing to kneel in front of me. She touched Hannah's face and got no response. "Oh god." She began to cry.
"Lily, can you call a ride or something? She got roofied."
"Did he hurt her? Did he touch her? Oh my god," she sobbed, rubbing Hannah's face softly.
"I don't think so, Lily, but we need to get her someplace safe," I insisted.
"Right," she sniffled, "right, I'll...fuck, I'll call Leon, I don't know." She typed searched for his contact in her phone with shaking hands and pressed the button to call him. She reached him within a few rings and walked a few steps away to talk.
I looked down at Hannah and wanted to cry. She had no idea how badly I wanted to hold her like this again, and for it to be in this context shattered my heart into a million pieces. I brushed a piece of hair out of her face. Her eyes fluttered open for a moment.
"Hey, hey, it's okay. You're okay," I cooed, speaking through the lump in my throat. "I've got you. You're safe."
"Kyle," she mumbled, before closing her eyes again and slumping, her head falling to the side. It felt like all of the air in my lungs got stolen all at once. That single word meant more than she would ever know.
"Leon's on his way," Lily breathed, kneeling back down in front of Hannah. "It's okay Han. We got you, baby girl. We're gonna get you home."
The world closed in on me. I looked down at her face and saw nothing but her. Felt nothing but her. In the middle of the chaos, there was Hannah. I needed to be calm for her. I needed to help her. And that was all that mattered.

*TW for this chapter: Proceed with caution if SA-themes trigger you. If things don't seem right at a party, find a friend! Get out of the situation. And make sure you cover your drink!*
Like an impressionist painting, things start to make more sense the further you step away from them. The amalgamation of all those abstract blots and brush strokes is a beautiful scene. The confusion you feel up close becomes worth it when you see the payoff.
That's how life is. The further you move away from the events that happen, the more they make sense in the larger landscape of your life.
My first day back at class after things went down with Kyle and Archie was hell. I was so nervous to go back, that I physically shook as I walked to the lecture hall. My tendency to get there early was heightened, and I arrived nearly an hour prior to the class's start time. I had to wait for the lecture that was in there before us to finish and for all of the students to file out before I could go in. I had to make sure I had the complete pick of the litter as far as seats went.
I picked a spot in the back of the room furthest from the door. Sure, I'd suffer and probably not be able to see the board, but I didn't care. A few of my classmates arrived after a while. I put up the hood of my, well, Lily's, oversized sweatshirt and buried my head in my phone. The chairs all around me filled up. I was definitely in someone's unassigned-assigned seat.
Too bad, I'm here for the rest of the semester, I thought to myself.
Professor Edwards began the lecture at the regular start time, so I found it safe to lift my head and look around a bit. I squinted over at my usual place in the room. One seat sat vacant. Some random had taken mine, and Kyle was not in his. I scanned the room for a mop of blonde hair. He was nowhere to be found.
The lecture hall's doors flew open and a visibly flustered Kyle Spencer raced inside and to his usual seat. I breathed a sigh of relief that his lateness meant he had no time to look for me.
I received a text from him that Thursday after I neglected to show up at his at 7 p.m.
Hey. I worked on a bit of the project by myself. Let me know when you want to meet up and look it over.
I, of course, ignored it. The next Thursday, around 9 p.m., I got another message.
Hi. Have you been coming to class? I haven't seen you. Are you okay?
Then another, two minutes later.
I get that you don't want to see me right now, but I emailed you what I got done. Can you look it over, please?
I looked the Word document with out project on it over and shrugged. Looked fine.
Looks fine.
Okay, awesome, sounds good. See you in class tomorrow?
I deleted the text chain and locked my phone. I did not, in fact, see him the next day. I did not hear from him again until the next Thursday, October 17, really late at night. About 11:56 p.m. to be exact.
Hannah, can we talk? In person? We just need to get this work for class done. We can't do that if you hate me.
I, once again, deleted the text chain and locked my phone.
Friday night rolled around in no time, and Lily finally convinced me to go to a party for the first time since Kyle humiliated me at the tri-Delta party. I felt good. For once, I felt legitimately confident about the calculus quiz I had taken earlier in the day.
"Ah!" I cried out, wincing and sticking my finger in my mouth, dropping the piece of Lily's hair that was in my hand.
"Burn yourself?" she asked smugly, looking at me in the mirror in front of us.
"Yes, your fucking curling iron sucks," I laughed, shaking my hand a few times in the air before grabbing another strand of hair. She stifled a giggle.
"Don't make me laugh while I'm doing my eyeliner," she complained. I wrapped her blonde hair around the hot rod and held it for a moment, then released it. It fell down and bounced like the spring it had become.
We were getting ready for another mixer between her sorority and Kappa Alpha, a lesser-known, less-douche-y frat on campus. Usually mixers have creative themes. This one's theme was "formal." Real creative, right?
I finished curling Lily's hair and unplugged the curling iron. "You look beautiful, Lil," I smiled. She  put a finishing layer of powder on her face. She wore a strapless, black satin cocktail dress. She paired it with gold eyeshadow and a pale nude lipstick.
"You don't look half-bad yourself," she replied. I stepped over to the full-length mirror in her room and examined myself. I wore a pink and brown lace babydoll dress that I found at the thrift store. I wore my hair natural and down, and paired it with winged eyeliner and brown mary-jane flats.
I smoothed the front of my dress and sighed. "Are you ready to go?" I asked.
"Just...a bit...more hairspray," Lily muttered, waving the aerosol can around her head rapidly. "My hair doesn't hold curls for shit."
We walked to the party, as Kappa Alpha was less than a block away from us. It was crowded when we got there, but only mildly so. We spent the first hour dancing and socializing together. Lily knew this was hard for me, so she stuck by my side, which was very unlike her.
That was until I started talking to Julian. Jules, his friends called him. He was a senior in KA. He lived in the house on the ground floor.
He was tall and brooding. He had tired eyes and long hair. He wore a loose-fitting suit, his off-white dress shirt untucked from his pants. His blue and red striped tie hung loose around his neck, complete with a haphazard knot holding it in its position. His voice was low and quiet, almost as if everything he said was a secret no one else but you could know.
"Hannah, you said your name was?" he asked with a slight smile. We both leaned against the wall in the living room, which was now filling up pretty decently. It was common for mixers to get crashed, it seemed, as members from TKE, Tri-Delt, KLG, and other Greek organizations started filing in.
I held a cup with some rum and coke in it. He lazily held a beer bottle between his fingers. He had to stoop down to hear me better. Like, really stooped down. He had at least an entire foot on me. The height difference was somewhat of a turn-on for me.
"Hannah Martin," I said with a smile, right next to his ear.
"Jules," he replied, putting out his hand for me to shake it. I blushed and took him up on the offer even the slightest touch. "Do I know you from somewhere?"
"Uh, I don't think so," I answered, shyly. "I'll admit I only barely recognize you myself, and I come to a lot of these things."
"Are you in Pi Phi?" he asked. The way he had to really lean down to talk to me made my stomach twist and my cheeks burn hot. That mixed with a bit of liquor made me feel quite funny.
"No, I'm just a friend. Designated friend," I stammered. "My friend is in Pi Phi, she drags me to these things."
"I kinda thought you didn't belong, but I didn't want to be rude," he chuckled. "I like your vibe."
I stood up straight and shifted the weight on my feet. "Hey, I was thinking the same thing about you, to be fair," I admitted. "God, it's getting loud in here."
"I'm only in this frat for the excuses to drink," he professed. He took a large swig out of his beer bottle, finished it off, and then put the empty down on one of the shelves of the bookcase next to us. Then, he placed both of his hands on my shoulders. "May I lead you to my room, Hannah Martin?" he asked with a cocked eyebrow and a smirk.
"Oh, uh, I," I stuttered.
"To hear each other better," he assured. "I'm right in there." He pointed at a door across the room.
"Um, sure then," I smiled, bashfully, biting my fingernail. He spun me around, then replaced his hands on my shoulders, guiding me forward as we started to his bedroom.
When we got to the door, I stopped to let him open it himself. He unlocked it with a key and grabbed me with his free hand, pulling me in. I looked around at the dimly lit room. It was small, one full-sized bed in the corner of the room, clad with red sheets. The walls were plastered with posters. A record player sat atop a small wooden bookcase packed full of vinyl. It was leagues quieter in his room. I took a large sip of my drink.
"Closed or open?" Jules asked, still stood by the door, pointing at it. His posture was entirely open and loose. I felt I could trust him, as there seemed to be no "want" in his gaze.
"You can close it," I rasped. "It'll be quieter that way."
He crossed the room, passing me as he made his way to the record player. "Saw you looking at these," he muttered. He knelt down in front of the case. "What do you like? I'll see if I have it."
"God," I sighed, scanning the posters in his room to see what bands he may have. The Doors, The Stooges, Talking Heads, Velvet Underground. I took another sip of my drink, thinking, then landing upon a possible band. "Ooh, uh, Sonic Youth?" I looked over at him and watched a smirk creep across his face.
"Wow, okay," he breathed, thumbing through this collection. "I have....Daydream Nation....and Rather Ripped."
"Rather Ripped, definitely. Play Incinerate," I requested.
He pulled the record out, then shook the vinyl loose from its cover. "You're lying," he snarked. "There's no way you know these guys."
"Ah, Jules, but I do," I sighed, feigning wistfulness. I took yet another sip from my drink and watched as he loaded the record onto the player and moved the needle over to the song I asked for. He turned to face me and smiled.
"Here, uh, sit," he mumbled, gesturing toward his bed. I meandered over and flopped down lightly, letting my dress poof as I landed. He joined me, sitting only for a moment before looking at my cup. "You're running low, can I get you something?"
"Oh, my drink?" I asked, eyebrow cocked. I looked around for a place to put the cup. "You don't have to worry about it I'm fi-"
"No," he cut me off. "What were you drinking? I'll get you more."
Surprised by his insistence, but blushing at his chivalry, I nodded. "I, uh, just get me whatever, I'm not picky." He grabbed the cup out of my hand and walked over to a mini fridge that sat in the corner of the room closest to the door.
"Would something from here work?"
"Yeah, I don't care, I wouldn't want to venture out into the party either," I giggled, watching him open the fridge's door and look around inside.
"Oh, Hannah, can you, uh, turn the record over?" he asked. "I wanna hear Turquoise Boy." I stood, turned my back to him, and walked over to the record player. I lifted the needle, lifted the record up, and flipped it over, scanning the label for what the track number of the song he wanted was. Then, I moved the needle over to the third song in and turned on my heel, nearly crashing into him.
Jules stood, towering over me, my cup in his hand. I looked up at him, beaming a sweet smile. "Thank you, Julian." I tasted the drink. It was fizzy and bitter. Beer. "Big beer guy, huh?"
He laughed nervously. "I wouldn't say that," he scratched the back of his head. "It's just what I had." Jules grabbed my wrist and led me back to his bed. He flopped down in a half-laying position. I sat down, just next to his hip, facing him.
"Your room is cool," I noted, looking around. "I have a lot of posters like this."
"Ah, you do?"
"Oh tons," I chuckled. "Lot of cool bands up here, though."
He looked up as well. "I guess," he shrugged.
"No, seriously," I insisted. "Talking Heads, Buzzcocks, Radiohead, Descendents. I mean they're all amazing."
"You know Buzzcocks?" he gasped. "I've never met a girl cooler than you. How are you real?"
"Oh shut up," I giggled, pushing the center of his chest. I took another sip of my drink.
"Do you happen to know what time it is?" Jules asked, sitting up a bit.
I felt around for my phone in the top of my dress and rolled my eyes. "I would be able to tell you if I had my phone," I groaned. "I must have left it somewhere."
"Ah, okay," he trailed off. "Well, that's fine. I'm happy talking to you anyway. Where are you from, Hannah Martin?"
I felt a small bit of tunnel vision come on. Nothing too crazy. I chalked it up as drinking too much too fast. "Uh, 'm from Massachusetts, near Salem," I answered.
"Oh, so you're a witch?" he snarked. I laughed a little too hard at the comment, resting my head on his shoulder.
Damn, Hannah, get it together. You're throwing yourself all over him. Desperate, my internal voice warned. He rubbed my back and chuckled as well. "I'm, I'm not a witch," I stammered. "Just w-weird."
"Yeah?" he cooed. Julian's touch and low voice were calming. I tried to lift my head to look at him but couldn't.
"Jules, I...I," I began.
"Shh," he soothed, stroking my hair. "You're okay."
It suddenly felt natural for my eyes to be closed. An all-encompassing wave of exhaustion hit me. The pull of soothing darkness enticed me. And altogether, my consciousness slipped.

13.
Sleep wasn't sleep anymore. After coming home from the party, I slept. The entirety of the next day, I slept, and the next, too. I slept through classes on that Monday. Through the rest of the day, for that matter. Because sleeping was the only thing I could do.
I was exhausted. Being tired felt different, though. It wasn't a need for sleep, it was a need for a break, for peace.
I didn't realize how much words could hurt under the patronizing gaze of two guys who meant only to hurt me. The woman in the room backed into a corner by two men, like a wounded animal being zeroed in on by predators.
It would have been better for me if Archie had opened that door and slit my throat or bashed my head in with a bat, or even picked me up over his shoulder and thrown me out the window onto the cold pavement below. I would quietly bleed out, leaving them with a mess to clean up that was only merely physical. A stain on the floor and nothing more. It wouldn't have been too much blood.
But the most blood spills when you shoot for the heart. A mess you can't clean up, sadly, because the bullet holes aren't even real. There's no soap or trash bag or landfill big enough to help clean this kind of mess.
That night, bright red seeped through my clothes and stained my sheets. It spilled out and got everywhere. Alone in my room, I was slipping on a floor covered in blood. I tried so hard to be okay, to leave, and to ignore the fact that I was bleeding out from a giant, fictional hole in my chest, but the ground, saturated with my blood, would make me slip and fall back down. So hard I thought I might never get up again.
So in my bed, I stayed, letting my body drain of its color, until I was hollowed out and weak, in too much agony to cry, or even breathe. Sleep wasn't sleep, it was my surrender.
Lily checked on me each day. I told her I was sick. She offered food, water, and even help showering. Lily was smart. She wasn't dumb. Lily knew I was not sick. She gave me space without leaving me out to dry. She trusted that I would come to her when I wanted to, or when I needed to.
Life isn't so cut and dry. I knew that, I did. There are always motives behind what people do and don't do. What you come to find out is always more than what you bargained for.
I was ready to give it all to him. Every part of me. It would have been much easier if the seat next to mine wasn't the only one left open on the first day of class. It would have been easier if I wasn't so naive, or so easily entranced by a false expression on some jerk's face.
Initially, I was angry, because I knew I could never do anything like to him. I could never do that to anyone. He made me feel so small and insignificant. But then, I felt nothing, because it was easier.
Tuesday morning came thanks to Lily. I would have missed it otherwise, as in, slept right through it.
She knocked on the door softly and crept in. I awoke upon hearing her careful steps on my bedroom floor.
"Hey sleepyhead," she cooed, smiling. "How're you feeling?" She sat on the edge of my bed.
I sat up slightly and stretched. I hadn't moved in a bit. "Hi Lilypad," I yawned, sitting forward and flopping down, laying my head on her lap. "I'm good."
"No you're not," she whispered, rubbing my head, "and that's okay."
I looked up at her and began to cry, tears stinging the back of my eyes. My lip wobbled as if I were a small child. I let out a pathetic sob and buried my face in her thigh.
"Han, what's wrong? What's really wrong?" she asked gently, rubbing my back as gasping cries escaped my lips.
"Fuck, Lily, I fucked up," I cried.
"How? How'd you fuck up?" she replied, rubbing my back.
"I'm sorry I kept this a secret," I sobbed, "I'm so sorry." She stayed silent, waiting for me to clarify as she continued to soothe me. "I- I've been seeing someone."
"Silly, you don't think I realized?" she giggled, brushing my hair out of my face.
"No, I just, it was Kyle," I responded, broken by hiccup-y cries.
"Spencer?" she clarified, a bit of shock in her voice.
"Y-yes, Kyle Spencer," I affirmed, calming down a bit and sitting up. I sniffled before continuing. "For the past couple of weeks. N-nothing too serious."
"You sound like me," she laughed, a sympathetic expression on her face.
"It's bad, though, it's bad," I continued. "It feels like I'm in a fucking teen drama when I say this, Lily. It was, like, a prank. Sorry, a bet."
Her eyes widened as she slapped a hand over her mouth. "What do...what do you mean?"
"He and Archie made a bet the night of the TKE party," I murmured.
"Wait, when was that?"
"You got really drunk, you may not remember," I explained. "Kyle and Archie were being creeps so I yelled at them on your behalf. That night they made a bet." Her brows furrowed as I spoke. "Kyle tried to get with me, Archie tried to get with-" I trailed off.
"With who, Han?" Lily asked, a bit panicked.
"Fucking, uh, Archie tried to get with you," I scoffed, staring off into middle distance. An indescribable look flickered across her green eyes. "What?"
"That's fucking interesting," she muttered through gritted teeth, "but please, finish."
"Well, Kyle and I, uh, went upstairs at the party, and Archie walked in on us," I croaked. "He basically said Kyle won the bet."
Lily rolled her eyes and sat straighter, hanging her head back to look up at my ceiling. She let out a large sigh and reached her hand over to pat my thigh. "I, uh," she coughed, "that's interesting. Because Archie and I have been fucking on the side."
I shot to attention as if a bolt of lightning rolled up my spine, gasping so loud the neighbors could probably hear. "When?!" I exclaimed. "I mean, since when?"
"God, weeks now," she sighed. "It meant nothing to me, but damn does it now."
I practically launched myself at her and wrapped my arms around her neck, hugging her tightly. "Oh my god, Lily."
"I could kill that motherfucker right about now," she uttered into my shoulder, her southern drawl making a stronger appearance than usual. "Kyle too."
"I thought it was real," I mumbled into her neck. "I think, I think I was falling for him."
She rubbed my back with a comforting hand. "I'm sorry baby, I'm sorry."
"And now I have to see him in class tomorrow," I groaned, flopping back onto my pillow.
"Well, let's start with some food and a shower, and then we can talk," she decided, slamming her knees as she got up. "Come on." She reached her hand out to me, encouraging me to stand and get myself together.
"Thank you, Lily," I whispered through the lump in my throat, grabbing her hand. She was always a good friend.
She couldn't clean the mess he made, but she could move me away from it. Distract me from it for a while. Then, and only then, could color return to my cheeks, and my bed return to a place I only reside in at night.

"One, two, three!" Lily shouted, counting off before slamming her red solo cup on the table and raising it to her lips, taking in its contents swiftly.
I did the same, as well as a few other girls. Tequila slid down my throat, bringing with it a slight burn and warmth that spread through my chest. I shivered and squealed, a bit of energy surging through my body all at once.
The kitchen was packed solid with bodies. It was a small space that seemed to be bulging at the seams with people. We nestled into the crook of the counter right next to the fridge. As soon as we settled, we had to move multiple times for droves of people getting drinks. The spot was a hub, and we were in the way.
We didn't care, though, because we needed a surface to do shots. We landed in that area after realizing the party was so full, that it would be impossible to enjoy it sober. Lily's sorority sister Sarah brought a bottle of cheap tequila, so we went to work.
Lily tapped my shoulder, knocking me out of my own little world, and pointed her finger in the direction of what I could only assume was the bathroom while saying something I couldn't make out over the buzz of the room.
She and Sarah disappeared into the throngs of people. I turned back to the counter and poured another shot, took it, and then mixed yet another shot with soda. I swirled the liquid in my cup with my finger and departed from our spot. I knew Lily was not likely to return. I was sure she didn't care anymore. She was too faded already.
I relocated to what I guessed was the living room. There were couches occupied with individuals drinking and making out, and there was a TV in the corner with music coming from it. I winced each time someone got too close to the expensive electronic device, fearing it may tipple over from the actions of one too-drunk person. A free spot on the wall opened up, so I made a beeline for it.
Leaning against the wall, I pulled out my phone. I saw a few notifications, including a text from Kyle. Where are you? it read. I lifted my head and scanned the room, looking for the one person I wanted to see most.
As if on cue, I locked eyes with the most enchanting pair of brown eyes. A familiar sight, as of late. His lips curled into a soft smile. I mustered one back. I was actually so flustered, which caught me by surprise.
At that moment, I took stock of my appearance, suddenly all too sure I looked bad. Possibly the worst I'd ever looked. It was busy, I was drunk, and I turned red when I was hot and drunk. It simply wasn't fair that I was in the presence of him. He looked stunning. His blonde hair was slightly messier than usual. He wore a black long-sleeved shirt with loose-fitting jeans. His skin had a glow, while mine was covered in sweat.
I stood, transfixed on him, disgusted with myself for feeling inferior, for even a moment, to Kyle Spencer. The internal war waged on.
"Hey," he started.
I couldn't help but giggle. "Hi," I breathed.
He stooped down, putting his mouth right on my ear. "I don't think we've met," he whispered. His breath hit my skin, causing goosebumps to cover my skin in an instant. He stood straight again and smiled at me.
"No, I'm sure we haven't," I replied with a wink, laughing at his advance.
"You look so good," he shouted, loud enough so I could hear it over "m.A.A.d city" by Kendrick Lamar. I blushed.
"So do you," I returned. I lifted my hand to touch him, then stopped, rethinking my decision. He noticed and laughed.
"You know, it's really loud in here..." he smirked, his left hand reaching back to scratch the back of his head. He looked around slyly as if to say, Let's go somewhere more private.
He stuck out his right hand and motioned for me to grab it. I shoved my phone into my jean jacket's pocket and switched the hand my drink was in. Then, I grabbed his palm with a sly smile and began to follow him.
The crowd seemed to part for him. Typical Kyle Spencer shit. He led me through the sea of people further back into the house. Down a small hallway was a set of stairs. There were bodies on the stairs, all engaged in various...activities. Kyle led me upward, dodging couples as we went.  Once we were upstairs we traversed down the hall, stopping at the second door on the left. It was an unoccupied bathroom.
"Now, where were we?" he asked, beaming his 5-star smile once again.
I wasted no time, grabbing his face and kissing him passionately, sickeningly hungry for his touch. He wrapped his arms around my waist, squeezing tightly. We both breathed heavily, huffing into each other's mouths between kisses. I pulled at his shirt, he took a handful of my hair.
Our kisses got deeper, and the space between us disappeared. We became one. I heard the doorknob turn behind us, then, I heard the door swing open. I didn't even have a second to turn my head before I heard him.
"Holy shit, Kyle," Archie laughed. Both of us scrambled apart, turning to see Archie Brener occupying the doorway. "Kyle Spencer, you dog."
"Archie, stop," Kyle warned, in a tone I didn't expect. It was less shocked, less caught-in-the-act than I expected. It was more of a knowing tone. He didn't seem at all embarrassed.
"At a party? Dang, do you actually like her, or something?" the obnoxiously drunk frat guy asked. "I guess I owe you when we get back home." He slurred his words, but I heard him loud and clear.
"Owe?" I asked, voice small, glancing at both of them. The panic in my body paralyzed me.
"Please, not here-" Kyle began, interrupted swiftly by Archie.
"You work quick," he announced. "The way you were on her was so convincing. You won the bet, dude."
The room went silent. All of the air left, sucked up by the vacuous words that had just left his lips. I glanced over at Kyle, whose head was down, gaze firmly locked on his shoes. I couldn't breathe. My lip trembled slightly, tears threatening behind my eyes.
"What bet?" I mustered, voice cracking, my eyes fixed firmly on Kyle, who hadn't moved a muscle in what felt like hours.
"Kyle and I-" Archie started from the doorway.
"No," I interrupted, shooting a look over at him before returning my stare to Kyle, "I want him to tell me."
Archie shifted his weight uncomfortably before taking a step back, further away from the bathroom. I could hear him walk away as I surveyed the boy I thought I knew just seconds prior. The boy whose silence took up so much space, it had no choice but to enter my chest, wrapping around my heart, squeezing it so tightly I thought I would die.
"Hannah," he croaked, eyes still trained on the floor.
"Kyle," I returned.
He turned to face me, his brows knitted, eyes glazed. "He was just being stupid," he murmured.
"Why don't I believe that?" I replied, voicelessly, tears holding any sound hostage. "Tell me the truth."
"I- I just," he stammered.
"Tell me the truth," demanded, finally producing some noise.
He rubbed his face with both of his hands and dropped them down heavily to his sides. "It was a bet...a bet between Archie and me," he muttered, "a-about you and, and uh, Lily."
A tight knot formed in my stomach. It lurched as if the roller coaster I was on took me on a steep drop. Tears gathered in the corners of my eyes.
"It was, it was that night at TKE. When you, uh, got defensive about Lily," he continued quietly. "We made a bet to see which one of us could, uh, date one of you, um, first."
"Why?" My voice shook. He shook his head, letting a few tears slip down his cheeks. The show of emotion disgusted me.
I turned on my heel and rushed out of the room storming down the stairs and through the party. It was unavoidable. I crashed into a few unfortunate party-goers as I tried to leave as quickly as I could. The room blurred, lights and colors becoming a twisted amalgamation of each other, like the messiest, most awful watercolor painting in the world.
The cool air of September nighttime was as welcome as a warm embrace in a snowstorm. The fresh air filled my lungs in stark contrast to the stifling air inside the house. I walked as fast as I could for as far as I could, traveling as far from the party as I could. I needed to get away so no one could see me break down.
I got down the street and turned the corner before collapsing in a heap on the sidewalk. I sobbed loudly into the sleeve of my jacket, not even stopping to take a breath.
Given his history, I should have known better. Part of me resisted falling for him, and I kicked myself for not listening to it. The part of my brain that was screaming for me to run, begging me to be rational, pleading for me to stick to my frat-hating guns. I was sick to my stomach with anger and sadness and the most unforgivable feeling of betrayal.
"Hannah!" I heard, alongside running footsteps. It was the last voice I wanted to hear. I looked up and saw Kyle jogging toward me.
I don't know what came over me. I stood immediately and rounded on him as he came upon me. "What? You're here to add insult to injury?" I shouted. "What are you going to say, huh?"
"That I-"
"What, that you really liked me?" I laughed, darkly. "You are a sick person, you know that?"
His expression changed, switching from concern to shame.
"You and your fucking brothers have a fetish for making people like me look dumb. You insist upon trying to paint me as a fool," I cried. "Since I started here, people like you called me a lesbian, or a hard-ass or made me feel bad for not being able to take a joke. Well, guess what? You're not fucking funny. None of you are! You're just fucking mean. You're evil."
"Hannah," he muttered despair in his expression. He stepped toward me.
"No. Get the fuck away from me. Stay the fuck away from me," I warned. "I'm not your friend. I never was. I don't want to see you again."

note: italicized text is a flashback
Our night ended with Kyle dropping me off outside the apartment, punctuated with a small kiss. A goodbye kiss. On each other's lips. At that moment, I didn't care where we stood, or what we were. I just accepted the small act of intimacy and went on my way. I was dizzy, blindsided by the onslaught of emotion.
I had to see him the next day in class, or at least, that's the way Hannah of the recent past would have viewed it. It was more like, I got to see him the next day. I had the privilege and pleasure of seeing him so soon after everything went down. The forced proximity sent me into a frenzy.
I took extra care in choosing my outfit, putting on makeup, and making sure my hair was brushed for once. I looked so presentable, in fact, that I got the third degree from Lily as I was on my way out.
"You look...nice," she remarked from her seat on the sofa, hesitancy in her voice. She sat criss-cross-applesauce with a bowl of cereal in her hand. Her pretty blonde hair was thrown up into the messiest of buns, mascara smudged down her face.
"You're skipping class again," I shot back, trying to rush out the door, mimicking her tone.
"Hey, hey, no need for all of that," she called out. I stopped and spun around to face her. "I just mean, like, why?"
"I happen to think I look nice every day," I snarked. "And does there have to be a reason for it?"
"Well, I dunno, Han," Lily shrugged, putting a spoonful of Cheerios in her mouth. "I mean, you disappeared for hours yesterday, I barely got to talk to you when you came home, but you seemed happy, and now you have a sick-ass outfit on."
I stepped closer to her and rested my weight on one foot, popping my hip and crossing my arms over my chest. "None of that correlates."
"Defensive, defensive, Hannah," she tutted. "I'm just a best friend taking an interest."
"Okay, I'll take an interest, too," I returned. "Where were you last night, Lily Davies?"
She put her bowl of cereal down in her lap and covered her face with her hands. "A whore never reveals her secrets," she murmured, muffled by her palms over her mouth.
"Well, I love you," I laughed, changing the subject, "but I must go if I want to make it to class on time."
Lily lifted her face and smiled at me. "Bye, Han," she replied. "I love you most."
The lecture hall was empty when I arrived, just the way I liked it. I took my usual seat and pulled out my materials, sitting in wait for Kyle's arrival. I looked at some things on my phone to pass the time and I tried really hard not to stare at the door each time it squeaked open.
Professor Edwards arrived and began leafing through his papers, preparing to hand back Friday's quizzes. The hall began to fill up pretty decently. I shifted anxiously in my seat.
Finally, I felt the air next to me change in the way it does when someone takes up the space next to you. I inhaled deeply and took in the unmistakable scent of Kyle.
"Hey," he breathed, putting a hand on my arm. I breathed out and looked up, meeting his eyes. He smiled softly at me and laughed. "I'm always late, I know."
"I never noticed," I giggled, sarcastically.
He reached for my hand and laced his fingers between mine, squeezing for a moment before releasing it to grab his things out of his backpack.

Water came as a welcome bounty, spilling onto my skin from the shower head. The warmth spread over me like a welcome hug. I felt my life wrap gently around me as well, the sweet joys of new endeavors and passions. A small hum rose from the depths of my throat.
It had been two weeks since our date, or, well, it had been a little long. It was September 27 when I stood in the shower, reflecting on him and me, whatever we had going on.
For more than fourteen straight days, Kyle and I found reasons to see each other. Every single day. As far as Lily and Archie and every other person in our lives were concerned, we were getting a hell of a lot done on our "math project." We worked on it, sure. So much so that we were practically done, but no one needed to know that.
Most of our time spent together, though, was spent stealing glances, making each other laugh, learning about each others' interests, and curating the perfect joint playlist. We met in the library, at coffee shops, and on park benches between classes. I spent time on Thursday nights at his, like usual, but then, also, Tuesday nights.
Those nights got later, as in, I would stumble home in the early hours of the morning.
"Stay the night, please," Kyle pleaded, tone seeping with worry. We both lounged on his sofa, Kyle sitting upright against the side of the sofa, legs outstretched across its length, and I in between his legs, head resting back against his chest. His arms rested lazily around my form. I could feel his voice rumble through his chest as he spoke.
"Are you coming onto me?" I snarked, turning my head to make eye contact.
"What? I-" he stammered, blush rising to his cheeks.
"You know I'm kidding, Kyle," I assured.
"I just mean like," he stuttered, "like, it's really late. I don't want you walking back this late." As he spoke, he wrapped his arms tighter around me.
I relaxed into him and rested the back of my head against his shoulder. "I know. I gotta get home, though," I contended. "My wife will worry."
"Lily can last one night without you," he laughed. "You can sleep on the couch. I just want you safe."
"I will be safe, Kyle," I muttered. I couldn't tell him the truth behind my rush. The truth being that Lily had no idea about the two of us, and she had been blowing up my phone for the last hour, begging me to come home to talk about her boy problems. Studying shouldn't take this long. was the last text she sent. She was right. And that's because we weren't studying. We were making out.
"Can you at least kiss me again before you leave?" he bargained.
Without a word, I turned my body and laid a long, passionate kiss on him, before standing to gather my things.
I thought about him constantly, and I wanted to be near him always. When we weren't together, we were texting. Lily definitely knew I had something going on, but my pride refused to let her know the details. She didn't press me on it.
This shower had a purpose. The warm water washed over me, preparing me for my first Friday night out since becoming a "thing" with Kyle. Tri-Delta was hosting and I knew Kyle would be there. He knew I would be there. It was agreed upon by both of us that we would play it cool and not make anything obvious.
I got dress in a white tee, a black skirt, and a pair of beat up converse. I did my makeup and my hair and threw on a jean jacket just before walking out the door with Lily.
The party was insane, as most were. It was packed from wall to wall with bodies and smelled of liquor. Lily grabbed my hand and dragged me through the crowd, searching for her sorority sisters.
As we weaved around bodies, I took in who was around us. My gaze landed on Archie and Kyle, standing huddled together against the wall. Archie looked up and locked eyes with me, a strange look on his face. Lily tugged me forward and I continued through toward the Tri-Delta house's kitchen.
