“Honey, let go, we have a meeting with your advisors in 30 minutes.”
In answer, Zuko grumbled, tightening his arms around your waist and drawing you closer to his bare chest.
“Zuko,” you exclaimed, giggling, “we have to be there! You’re the fire lord, remember?”
“Exactly. I'm the fire lord, therefore I get to decide whether or not I attend I meeting,” he replied smugly, “and right now I’m deciding that I want to stay in bed with my beautiful wife.”
“Flattery isn't going to work, Zu. Don’t even try. Besides, your advisors have finally agreed to allow me to attend this one. I can't be late. That would hardly provide for a favourable first impression."
You had not been looking at Zuko's face when you said that, but you felt him stiffen at your words. All sense of playfulness eviscerates from the air.
"What," Zuko enunciates.
You shift your gaze back to his face, perplexed at his tone. "What?"
"What do you mean, 'my advisors are finally letting you attend this one'?"
"Oh," you replied sheepishly, "just forget I said that."
Zuko gave you a pointed look and sat up straight, resting on the headboard of the massive bed. You followed suit, suddenly taking an obstinate interest in his warm hands, fiddling with his fingers. He took one of his hands from yours and raised your chin with his index finger, urging you to make eye contact with him.
"You want to inform me," Zuko spoke softly, "or should I ask the advisors myself?"
"It's nothing," you started, "it's only that… every time I ask if I can attend the meetings, your advisors refuse. They tell me that these are not affairs that concern me."
Zuko always thought you didn't join meetings simply because you weren't interested in these affairs. His visage distorted into one of rage, and you felt compelled to calm him down, fearful of what he would do to his advisors.
"But it's truly not a problem! It makes no difference to me, honey. As a result, it should not concern you." You ran your hand along the nape of his neck, tenderly running your fingers along the hairs resting there.
"Why didn't you tell me? I could've handled it," Zuko inquired, his voice concerned.
"What would it look like if I came to you with all of my problems? I need to show your advisors that I'm capable of being the fire lady you deserve; that the fire nation deserves," You muttered solemnly. Your head bowed low as if you were ashamed to admit this.
Zuko's heart ached at your confession. How long had you been feeling like this? It's been a year since Zuko took you as his betrothed, and it angered him to just find out now.
"Sweetheart," Zuko started, taking your hand and placing a kiss on your knuckles, "you don't need to prove anything to anyone. You are already the fire lady that I deserve and that the fire nation needs. Your presence and input in these meetings are valuable to me, and I want you there by my side. I should have made that clear to my advisors from the start."
You looked up, tears forming in your eyes, "Really?"
"Of course," Zuko replied, wiping away a tear with his thumb, "I'll speak to my advisors and make sure that they understand your importance in these meetings."
You leaned in, pressing your lips to his, revelling in the softness of his lips. Zuko deepened the kiss, his arms wrapping around you tightly. You felt relieved that you no longer had to hide your frustration and disappointment about being excluded from important meetings.
"Thank you, Zuko," you whispered, "you always know how to make everything better."
Zuko chuckled, holding you close, "That's what I'm here for, my love."

You had known the Gaang since the Siege on the Northern Water Tribe. Being the closest person to Yue, it was no surprise you got to meet the Gaang. The truth is, you and Sokka didn't get along well when he first arrived. In your opinion, he was always so loud and so God-damn arrogant!
At first, you brushed off the feeling of dread in the pit of your stomach as pure annoyance towards the ponytail-haired boy. You later realized that it was out of jealousy towards his infatuation with Yue. You don't know how it happened. One day you were a normally functioning teenager, and the other, you would wake up and sleep to the thought of Sokka, not that you would tell anyone. Not when Yue was also captivated by the boy.
Yue was the princess of the Northern Water Tribe, the only daughter of Chief Arnook. So it made sense she always got everything handed to her on a silver platter. It wasn't like she intended to take the interest of everyone in every room she would be in. You couldn't blame her. Not with her confidingly soft blue eyes and her strikingly snow-like white hair. Yue brought a sense of calmness wherever she would be, a smile plastered on her face. She had the kindest soul, would never hurt anyone. It hurt you to hear that Yue would marry the young, egotistical warrior Hahn. You'd always ask her why she couldn't just call off the engagement. Yue would always reply with something along the lines of, "for the people," which you never understood. You never understood how someone would put the happiness of others before theirs, but you'd always keep quiet.
You never understood it until you had to put Yue's happiness before yours. As much as it hurt, you were happy she finally found love, even if it was with the same guy that clouded your thoughts more often than not. You were the first person she told about the walks together around the city and the kiss on the bridge. She came to you crying that night. She'd describe how much she loved him, but she had to do the right thing for her people. You'd take her in for a hug, patting her on the back and promising her how everything will be alright.
Oh, how wrong you were. Not even a few days later, Zhao's siege of the Northern Water Tribe would take place. Yue would lead you, Katara, and Aang into the Spirit Oasis. Zhao would fatally strike the Moon Spirit. Yue would sacrifice herself to give back the life the Moon had given her. She'd place her hand on the fish, close her eyes, and die in Sokka's lap, leaving you alone, full of dread for what's to come. Yue's spirit appeared before your eyes, swearing that she'd always be with Sokka before giving him a heart-drenching kiss, to you at least, and then she'd vanish completely, not telling you anything, her lifelong friend.
You got asked to join the Gaang, as you'd grown close to Katara and Aang since the beginning. You accepted. What good would you be if you stayed in the Northern Water Tribe, anyway? You were a non-bender. Not like you could help mend the injured. So you hopped on Appa.
You sat at the very end of Appa's saddle, your knees tucked to your chest and your head resting on them. silent tears streaming down your face, mourning the loss of your best friend. Katara had decided it would be best not to bother you. However, Sokka thought it would be better to comfort you. He situated himself next to you. You could feel his presence, though you decided not to bother with a look at him; not when you felt mad.
Mad at yourself, for not protecting Yue. Mad at the fire nation, for obvious reasons. Mad at Yue, for not bidding you a farewell, like she did Sokka. And most importantly, you were mad at Sokka. Mad at him for-
"Hey, I'm sorry you had to go through that."
You simply shrugged, still facing your surrounding.
"I know what you're feeling,-"
"No, you don't." The anger you were feeling had started to build up.
"I loved her, Y/N, and I know what your going through is not easy but-"
"For Agni's sake will you just shut up!" You finally turned your head towards him, not caring about the shocked expression on his face. "You have only known her for three days. Three days." You held up your fingers. "You don't get to tell me you know how I feel when I've known Yue-," your voice had started to crack, already hoarse from the lack of use, "I've known her my entire life, and she didn't even think to spare me a glance when she bid you her goodbyes. She chose you over me, her lifelong bestfriend. So no, you don't know how I feel. And quite frankly, it would be best if you leave me alone. Because if I have to look at your face for another second, I'm gonna lose it."
Sokka's lips were pressed in a tight line, he gave you a single nod and went back to his original place next to Katara. You went back to your original position, your head on your knees once more. You physically feel all your energy drain out, and slowly went into a slumber. Dreaming of the moon, a white-haired girl, and a certain ponytailed non-bender.

unrequited love | modern!sokka x reader

You woke up with a feeling of dread in your stomach. You knew you had to do it. You had to break up with him. It was all becoming too much.
----
"Alright, I'm heading to bed, sweets. Do you need anything?"
"Nope. I'll be there in a few," you called out from the kitchen. You, as usual, had left a thesis paper till the last minute, so you were trying to finish it.
"Okay," Sokka replied, "goodnight." He came over to where you were seated and gave you a quick kiss on the forehead.
After you finished, you closed your laptop and headed to your shared room. Once you reached the foot of the bed, you flopped on the bed next to Sokka. He was already asleep, given how late it was; 2:34 am, your phone read. When you settled in bed next to him, he haphazardly reached out to you, making you giggle.
Not for long, though, as the smile on your face turned into a frown.
"I love you, Yue."
----
There it was, the same torture every time. At first, you thought nothing of it, she was his first love after all. The more it happened, the more the feeling of pure desolation wrecked your guts. You guys have been together for a year, and almost every night, he would say Yue's name in his sleep.
You never brought it up, sparing Sokka's feelings more than your own, knowing he'd feel guilty for putting you through this. And it seemed like he wasn't aware of it. His unconscious mind got the best of him.
It was no one's fault, really. It wasn't your fault you were so utterly in love with Sokka. Just how it wasn't his fault he didn't love you as much. Still, it was getting to you, and you weren't sure how much you could bottle up anymore.
----
It was dark out, you and Sokka were sprawled on the couch, watching some rerun of Star Wars. You've been stalling all day, but you knew it was inevitable now.
"Sokka," you called out his name, trying to get his notice.
He merely hummed, not taking his eyes off the television.
You chuckled softly, almost forgetting what you were going to do, before continuing, "We should break up."
That got his attention, his eyebrows furrowed, and he paused the TV. His whole attention is on you now. "We should... what?"
"We should break up."
A look of confusion was etched on his face now. He couldn't think of a reason why you would want to break up with him. He thought everything was going great. To him, it was. "Break up? Are you not happy anymore-"
"No! God, no," you quickly interrupted him, "you make me the happiest I've ever been. But I can't do that for you, that's why I think it's for the best if we-"
"What do you mean? You make me happy," Sokka countered, "of course you do! Where is this coming from?"
"Sokka, stop lying to yourself. I know it's not me you've been thinking of. I wanted to believe you thought about me, but it seems no matter what I do, you can't let go of her."
It was all making sense to him now. You sensed it. You could almost see the gears turning in his head. He was piecing it all together now.
"Sweets, you're the only one for me," he tried to reassure you, but the look in his eyes said otherwise.
"Please stop. You say her name in your sleep Sokka!" you ran a hand over your hair and let out a chuckle. "And- God, it's so fucked up I'm talking about this because she's dead! I knew what I was signing up for when we started dating. But fuck me if I knew how much it would hurt!"
"Y/n," Sokka called out, throat choked up, eyes brimmed red.
"No, let me finish, please," you stated firmly, "I'm not Yue, Sokka. You have to stop pretending that I am. I know you loved her. She was your first love, but please stop pretending that I'm her. I'm me. I know that’s not enough, but it’s all I got. If that isn't enough for you, you have to let me go."
"You are enough," Sokka asserted, his voice cracking, "more than enough. I'm... so sorry I made you feel anything less than."
"It's not your fault, hon. You don't get to choose who you love. Maybe in another lifetime, we would've worked. But not right now."
You both basked in the silence for a few minutes, though it felt much longer than that. You were trying your hardest not to cry. You've already cried too much about this.
"So this is it?" Sokka was the first to break the silence, his head in his hands, he rubbed at his eyes in frustration.
"I guess so," you answered, "I'll pack my bags and I'll be out of your hair by the end of the night."
You stood up, heading to the bedroom but Sokka held your arm softly. "I do love you, you know. What you said earlier about not getting to choose who we love. I truly love you if that makes a difference."
You took his face in your hands, intricately studying every detail. You brought him in for a kiss, one which he reciprocated just as fast, arms fastening around your waist, securing you in place. As if he was afraid of letting you go. This kiss was not like the other kisses you've shared, as cliché as that sounds. This kiss said goodbye, you both knew it.
The kiss lasted a few seconds, both of you slowly letting go, trying to prolong the process. Trying to memorize how it feels being in each other's embrace one last time.
Your eyes brimmed red, you slowly opened them, putting on the best smile you could without breaking down into pieces. Your foreheads touched, and you could feel Sokka's uneven breaths fanning your face.
"I know, honey, but you're not in love with me, not like I am with you."
