I'm going to go off on the assumption that you've already watched up to season 7, Hands of Time, because it was the last season before the movie redesigns. Yeah, the show got a bit of a redesign after the movie, but it's okay because seasons 8-10 are actually amazing. Also, Season 12 and 13 and 14 :)
In season 8, Sons of Garmadon, the ninja are following a strange group called the Sons of Garmadon who are interested in reviving Lord Garmadon. On the side, they're also protecting the Jade Princess of Ninjago: Princess Harumi, a victim of the SoG's attempt at hunting down one of the 3 Oni masks needed to revive Garmadon.
After the events of season 7, Wu has gone missing, but it's okay because they found him... but he's a baby now, so that's fun. Getting hit with that time blade did a serious number on him. As seasons 8 and 9 progress, however, he slowly ages back into the crazy old man that we all know and love.
Anyway, Lloyd likes Harumi, but as it turns out, she's actually the leader of the Sons of Garmadon and wants to revive Garmadon because she believes that he is the savior of Ninjago from the Great Devourer, who's tyrant left her without her parents. She was just using Lloyd to find the 3rd mask because of Lloyd's lineage.
The First Spinjitzu Master was part Oni, and in turn, Garmadon was part Oni, and in turn, Lloyd is part Oni. And only an Oni can obtain this third mask. (Oni are like demons, the embodiment of the element of destruction, and the opposite of dragons, which are the embodiment of creation).
Harumi now has all the masks and successfully manages to resurrect Garmadon who absolutely demolishes Lloyd in an effort to get his powers back. Within an inch of his life. Lloyd almost dies here and everyone in Ninjago is watching their green savior get beaten half to death.
With the help of the remaining ninja and Mystake -- that mysterious tea lady -- Lloyd is healed, but he no longer has his powers. Garmadon's reign begins and the Bounty is destroyed along with Kai, Jay, Cole, Zane, and Wu -- but in actuality, they're fine. Mystake gave them a bag of Traveler's Tea that transported them to the First Realm: The Realm of Oni and Dragons. However, Lloyd, Nya, and Pixal (who I should probably mention is Samurai X now) are under the impression that they're all dead.
I love season 8 :)
Season 9, Hunted, follows The Resistance -- Made up of Lloyd, Nya, Pixal, a few of the Elemental Masters, etc -- trying to fight back the Sons of Garmadon and the remaining Ninja's adventures in the First Realm of trying to get back home.
Lloyd is learning how to fight without the need of his powers and Ninja are captured by Dragon Hunters that want to use them to find Firstborne -- The mother of all Dragons -- so their leader, Iron Baron, can control her.
It's actually a really fun watch if you ever get the chance to.
To make a long explanation short -- Lloyd manages to get his powers back by resisting Garmadon instead of fighting him. All of the chaos of Garmadon's reign results in Harumi getting crushed by a building to save a family from ending up like she did. Augh, redemption. Firstborne helps the Ninja get back home and they defeat the SoG and alls well that ends well, right?
Not exactly. The Oni from the First Realm have escaped and intend to take over and destroy Ninjago.
Season 10, March of the Oni, is only 4 episodes, so there's not much to discuss. Basically, the ninja team up with Garmadon to defeat them, much to Lloyd's hesitation. When Garmadon was resurrected, the SoG only brought back his Oni side -- the evil side, so he has to learn how to care and all that jazz.
(Another very important thing about season 10, Jay wants to essentially propose to Nya. He does, they're yin and yang now)
Anyway, with the help of Garmadon, the Oni are defeated and he slips away, not to be seen from again.
And LEGO Ninjago: Masters of Spinjutzu is over.
But not really. There is a second series, just titled Ninjago. It's kind of a mess, but continues after season 10. It's the start of the 11-minute episode era and people are very conflicted about them.
Season 11, Secrets of Forbidden Spinjitzu is split into 2 parts: the Fire Chapter and the Ice Chapter. I personally don't like season 11, especially The Fire Chapter, but...
The ninja accidentally free an imprisoned serpent, Aspheera, who is after revenge on for her imprisonment. She steals Kai's elemental powers and goes on a tyraid across Ninjago with a scroll of forbidden spinjitzu, which especially corrupts the elemental master wielding it.
Aspheera manages to find Wu, who is responsible for her imprisonment in the first place, and attempts to banish him from Ninjago, but Zane jumps in front of him, holding another scroll of forbidden spinjitzu, and gets banished himself.
The Ice Chapter follows the ninja traveling to the Never Realm to get him back. The Never Realm is this frozen tundra that's under the rule of The Ice Emporer.
Lloyd and this wolf girl he meets (a forming named Akita) attempt to find Zane while the other ninja protect the people of them realm from the Ice Emporer. Kai tries to get his powers back and Nya tries to learn how to control snow -- because it's just frozen water.
Turns out, Zane is the Ice Emporer. Time there is weird and he's apparently been there for 60 years, corrupted by the scroll that he was holding.
blah blah blah, i don't really care about this season, the fix Zane or whatever and go back home.
Season 12, Prime Empire, is a Jay season. He does it again -- bro makes a mistake that costs the entirety of Ninjago to near collapse and he ends up on his own to fix it. He is responsible for all of the Ninja dying AGAIN.
Prime Empire is a video game that was abandoned by it's creator, Milton Dyer. The game had a very sophisticated AI capable of transporting the player into the game to provide an immersive gaming experience. Afraid after an unsuspecting player gets sucked in, Dyer pulls the plug.
25-30(?) years later the game is unearthed and Jay kind of winds up in it, as well as half of Ninjago -- leading the ninja (excluding zane) to have to follow him into the game to get him back and put a stop to the game.
They make their way through the game to the final boss, Kai, Cole, Lloyd, and Nya all dying in the process (in that order). So it's up to Jay to stop the final boss, Unagami (Untitled Adventure Game 1). Turns out, Unagami is upset that Dyer abandoned him and Jay, in his infinite wisdom, uses the power of, "hey, i was abandoned by my parents too!" to talk him out of taking over Ninjago and also convinces Dyer to take him back so they can start over.
Unagami undoes everyone who died in the game and he and Dyer live happily ever after as father and son. Absolutely messy season and one of my favorites :)
Season 13, Master of the Mountain, is a Cole season, finally. The ninja are invited to visit the kingdom of Shintaro, where they accidentally learn that the kingdom is powered by... slavery. Two races, the Geckles and the Munce -- who absolutely hate each other because they believe the other stole their sacred weapon gifted to them by the previous master of Earth, Lilly (Cole's mom) -- are made to work in vengestone mines under the castle.
The ninja are all unintentionally spit up: Lloyd, Jay, and Nya being made out to deal with the Munce, Kai and Zane to handle the Geckles, and Cole, with the help of the princess of Shintaro, Vania, and Master Wu to uncover and defeat whoever is behind all of this: the Skull Sorcerer.
The two races are united upon learning that it was the Skull Sorcerer -- who turns out to be the king of Shintaro -- who pitted them against one another and storm the sorcerer's keep to defeat his minions. But it is Cole who defeats the Skull Sorcerer himself, having learned a new elemental ability called the Spinjitzu Burst.
Absolutely top 3 in my favorite seasons.
Season 14, Seabound, is a Nya season. Her powers are starting to act up, but this is because Wojira, the owner of the elemental powers of Water and Wind -- yes, the FSM did NOT have control over these elements -- has been awoken by this very racist squid named Kalmaar. Bro hates the surface and wants to get rid of it.
Nya, has to become one with the sea to put a stop to Wojira and to save Jay who basically drowns. This is actually the first time Nya says the phrase, "I love you," to Jay (Jay has said it 3 times beforehand). Because she knows merging with the sea is a major sacrifice that cannot be undone.
Nya DECIMATES Wojira, but because she is now one with the sea, she can't go back to the others, much to Jay's dismay. That little man loves his wife so much. She returns to the sea. She is gone. She's technically dead. She has a funeral and everything.
Now. Season 15. Crystallized. No. (I have very strong opinions on Crystallized). Season 15, is actually really hype and a lot of fun, but it also falls flat at the end. It's underwhelming, really.
The first half of the season is dedicated to bringing Nya back. You know, the thing that couldn't be undone? Nya isn't the only one who's brought back from the dead, Harumi's back too. Her redemption is now null and void and she's evil again. Oh. And the Overlord is back too.
Garmadon is back and wants to push Lloyd into embracing his Oni side. While he gets a cool transformation and all, he gets scared by his own reflections and backs out of it. It's the other ninja's Dragon power that defeats the Overlord.
Cool Ninjago is now over.
WRONG AGAIN. There's ANOTHER series, Ninjago: Dragon's Rising. This show is never going to end.
Dragons Rising takes place years after the end of Crystalized. The realms are all merged together and everyone is misplaced. Dragon's Rising actually follows new characters: Arin and Sora and this little dragon Riyu. I don't want to get too much into it because I actually recommend watching Dragon's Rising.
and ramble over
ninjago was literally one of the first fandoms that i was into when i was younger (i was 8 when it first released holy heck)

This one has been living rent free in my head for 6 months, you don't underSTAND
Btw I just love the platonic physical affection between the ninjas we've been seeing. Like how they hug each other and shoulder pats and hold hands for comfort etc. It's just so nice seeing very close platonic affection like that in a cartoon.

Ngl if I was a Doc Wyatt and I saw the "#savemyboycole" thing that's going around, I'd wait an entire year just to say on April Fool's Day that Cole X Geo is NOT canon and Cole (if by then he's already dating Geo – and let's be real he probably will be) is gonna break up with Geo in the next season, only to give them a kiss scene like the one Jay and Nya had in "Double Trouble" back in season 1.
Either that or I'd put "Cole breaks up with Geo and gets a girlfriend" as a lie in the two lies, one truth (two truths, one lie?) that the writers do every year.

I think there's a lot you can tell about a Ninjago fan based on what objectively mediocre season they're unhealthily obsessed with.
Like, obsessed in an "i know its bad writing but goddamn does it compel me" kinda way. In a "no one can talk shit about my fave but me" kinda way. In an "I deserve a PhD for how intensely I study this thing under a microscope" kinda way. In an "Im the only one who truly understands this story and its wasted potential, so im the only one capable of hating it correctly" kinda way.
What exactly does your favorite mid season say about you? Good question. But it sure does say Something.

The part of the whole "savemyboycole" thing I find the funniest is that it's framed like the writers are bastardising Cole's character.
Because genuinely, every other Ninja but Cole has at some point faced major mischaracterisation and flanderization. IMO, Cole has remained the most consistent character in the whole show (the changes he gets feel like a natural character progression to me). Like buddy, why aren't we starting a partition to save Zane from his flanderization as "just the robot" /j? Literally, talk to me about any other character being fucked over by the writers at some point and I would agree with you

I'm bored so here is a Ninjago tag game for y'all:
Explain a Ninjago scene VERY BADLY
Me first: four local teenagers bully a child who just wanted candy (I start pretty mild I just want to see chaos ensue)
@penofwildfire @nyaskitten @fernaldoishere @gravyhoney @a-big-chicken-nerd @user-without-a-cool-acronym @iamsonormalaboutninjago @bravetheperson go nuts
Edit: forgot to mention that I will try to guess them
