June 24, 1968: Fans of the boxer Manuel Ramos cheered his entry into the ring, where he was beaten by Joe Frazier in two rounds in the brand new Madison Square Garden. “At the bell ending the first round, both gladiators were rewarded with an ovation,” reported The Times. “The wild-eyed crowd, announced as 10,785, included about 500 Mexican visitors. Many of the Mexicans wore straw sombreros with ‘Ramos’ and their idol’s nickname, ‘Pulgarcito,’ stitched on the brims.” Photo: Larry C. Morris/The New York Times

Smog over New York, 1966: Around Thanksgiving, smog swept into the city, prompting a flurry of articles, dramatic front page pictures and emergency alerts in several states. Though hospitals reported that no one was immediately injured by the smog, the long-term effects were cited as a concern, and Mayor John V. Lindsay — back in City Hall after a Bermuda vacation — discussed a plan to require buildings to dispose of garbage by means other than incinerators. Would rents increase as a result? “I can’t say for sure. There’s a problem,” the mayor said. Photo: Neal Boenzi/The New York Times

Jan. 31, 1967: Unloading garments in Manhattan’s “congested, busy streets (where one worker barely dodged a group of converging handtrucks last week and said, bitterly, ‘Kind of like a snake pit’).” The Times reported on the challenges confronting the fabric industry, whose smaller producers “supply the nuts and bolts of the garment industry — the buttons, the linings, zippers, trimmings, machines, the trucks and even the sandwiches — and what is more important?” Photo: Arthur Brower/The New York Times
