"if you ship this thing it's because you're too naĂŻve to understand that it's toxic and that you wouldn't like a relationship like this" actually it's because I see one of them as a mentos drop and the other as a bottle of coke zero and I want to watch the mess they'll be together

Generally I’m of the opinion that the wavy knife Jason wields is a flambard dagger, but I was watching this informative video today and stopped in my tracks when I heard-
“A Kris is an object of unconditional love. This love exists between the bearer of the blade and the Kris itself. Through this, a Kris protects the bearer from all threats external and internal- including from oneself.
The blade is borne from an act of love, exists in a state of love with its bearer, and then is passed from bearer to bearer generation to generation in a continuation of that love.”
…and now I can’t get over the IMPLICATIONS.
Also (I’m not SE Asian or Filipino so let me know if I’ve misinterpreted) but man is it not so appropriate for Talia to give something so symbolic? A weapon to protect him, a gift to ward off self-destruction, a recognition and relation to his capacity for love.

Why Did Batman Take in Jason Todd? (Part 1)
First interaction
Tumblr media
So his first impression is that he has 'stones,' he then follows Jason home and gets to talking about Jason's life.
He discovers at this point Jason's difficult living situation and personal tragedies. His father is in and out of prison likely in prison at the moment and his mother was sick for over a year while Jason took care of her until she died (cause of death stated later in the comic to be overdose). This is not the point he adopts Jason.
Tumblr media
He takes him to Ma Gunn's which we all know turns out to be bad news while also researching his background. This is when he finds out about Jason's dad's death and his mother's overdose.
Tumblr media
After he gets hit from behind while crime fighting, right before he goes to visit Jason, he starts thinking about how he needs Robin.
When he finds Jason, who is back to boosting tires, he confronts him about not being at Ma Gunn's at which point Jason reveals it is a school to train children in the art of crime. Batman is disbelieving of this and Jason vanishes the moment Batman takes his eyes off him because he is not interested in going back to Ma Gunn's or entertaining any other options.
Tumblr media
Batman goes to stop the heist and takes out almost all of Ma Gunn's crew but one almost gets him from behind. Luckily, Jason warns him. Watching 'his flank' so to speak, just earlier Batman was commenting he didn't realize how much he needed Robin to do that. And then . . .
Tumblr media
Jason is given Robin. Right before this he asks if he can split before the cops come. He does not ask for Robin.
So the story goes. (Batman fires Robin) Batman meets a homeless kid. Batman puts the kid in school to take care of him. Batman researches kid. Batman gets in a fight and gets clocked from behind. Batman is reminded about how he needs Robin to watch his back. Batman gets told by the kid about the heist. Batman is helped by the kid watching his back. Batman makes the kid Robin.
Nothing here indicates that Batman's primary motivation is saving Jason. He obviously wants to help him but he doesn't suggest Robin till 1) He realizes how much he (Bruce) needed Robin and 2) Jason showed potential. This indicates that Batman may have made Jason Robin for his own benefit as opposed to Jason's.

Why Did Batman Take in Jason Todd? (Part 2)
In Batman 410 we get the first mention (I believe) of Batman's motivation being steering Jason away from a criminal life and saving him from an early death.
Tumblr media
As shown above, he first uses the argument when he needs to defend himself against the argument that he is endangering a child.
He also defends himself to Commissioner Gordon.
Tumblr media
This time he argues that Jason's life means he is not only not a child. But older and tougher than both himself and Jim Gordon.
Then there is this in Batman 411:
Tumblr media
This occurs after Jason loses it at Two Face. Jason is upset at Bruce hiding things from him.
Tumblr media
Bruce argues he is trying to protect Jason but Jason doesn't understand why given that Batman takes him into combat. Jason himself says he doesn't really see Bruce as protecting him at this point.
In Batman 415, we get another reference to Batman needing a partner.
Tumblr media
This is Batman's internal narrative. That he needs a Robin. When he talks he uses arguments such as Jason being destined to be a criminal or older and tougher due to his difficult childhood but it is clear from his thoughts he is at least partially motivated to have Jason fight crime by his own needs.

Why Did Batman Take in Jason Todd? (Part 3)
Batman 416, the introduction of the 'reckless' Jason (I noted while reading Jason's Robin run there were many issues where Batman's recklessness caused problems) and the return of Dick Grayson.
Tumblr media
It seems in post crisis canon Dick actually became Robin at 12/13 the same age as Jason. 19-6=13.
Tumblr media
Once again, Batman is criticized for endangering a child. After saying the position was too dangerous for a 19 year old partner. (Given that Jason trained for 6 months it is likely Dick is supposed to be closer to 20 at this point)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the third time Jason's unstable situation has been mentioned as justification for his present vigilantism. It is notable that every time Bruce has used this defense it has been prompted by someone criticizing his endangerment of a child after Dick.
Tumblr media
He presents the argument that if he left Jason on his own he would be dead by now. He argues that Jason was self-destructive. This is not in line with how Jason was characterized in his new post-crisis origin.
After this Dick calls what Bruce is saying Bull. Demanding the truth.
Tumblr media
Bruce then confesses to being unable to do the job on his own however Dick calls him out for lying again. Until we finally receive this answer.
Tumblr media
This means the canon motivation of Starlin's Batman for having Jason as a sidekick is that he was lonely and missed Dick. Which does align with him immediately making Jason Robin instead of getting Jason to develop an identity of his own.
This comic also retconned Dick into having started being Robin at the same age making adding more evidence to the idea that Jason was a replacement for Dick.

There are currently ~2300 works in AO3 tagged with "Created Using Generative AI"
I'll be upfront with my opinion, which mirrors my opinion in regards to my field: using AI will only hasten your own obsolescence. The point of fanfiction is not to crank out fics, but rather to enjoy the hobby and communities of writing and fandom.

Jason using his guns as blunt weapons is so funny like imagine ur getting shot at by the Red Hood, he runs out of ammo, you think you have a chance and he just throws the fucking pistol at you

I think it would be really funny if every time Dick and Jason joined missions they kind of failed upwards, even if they goofed off, or dredged up extremely personal shit, it helped with their secret identities or got them to think outside the box. There's always a disagreement on methods, someone gets kicked through a door but it's the right door and they stumble on all the evidence and the bad guys. Something that got set on fire was actually a secret message that only appeared upon heating, or they found evidence of the crime while trying to delete embarrassing CCTV footage.

Ugh, was having a great time mocking my recently imprisoned rival when I noticed the camera positioning makes it so that I appear behind the bars, thus framing me as trapped in a metaphorical prison of the narrative, now my whole day is ruined. Fuck.

No amount of Bruce torturing himself is ever going to be enough for Jason because Jason doesn’t want Bruce miserable! He doesn’t want Bruce to break for him! The conventional wisdom that says the dead would wish for their loved ones to find closure and live life holds true for him too!! No demonstration or example of Bruce’s pain is ever going to be enough for Jason, because that isn’t the crux of his issue!
Yes he wants to be loved, yes he wants to know he matters, but he did not come back just to collect a debt of pain.
And the difficult thing is that his problem lies at the intersection between Bruce’s role as his father, a heroic symbol, and Jason’s general. Only talking about it in terms of Bruce vs Batman is… it muddles the subject a bit.
