I think a few other people have already had this headcanon but I too subscribe to the idea that Astarion watches Tav while they sleep. He's an elf so he doesn't need as much rest. Of course I like the idea of rather than it being all sweet and romantic, that he's staring down at you with glowing red eyes in the dark. Kinda like your cat who's waiting for you to wake up because they're bored and they're probably about to lick or paw at your face in a moment.

I have to hand it to Astarion's creators because ever since Baldur's Gate 3 came out only 2 months ago, artists are speed running art history from the Renaissance to current times by recreating every famous oil painting but with the stupid vampire as the subject and I'm like "Yeah, that's right" every time. I don't know exactly what Larian Studio put in that guy but it is certainly working.

Astarion getting so excited about meeting Drizzt hits different when you realize that Astarion probably held on the the legend because he, too, wanted to escape the horrors of his tormentors. Drizzt did what Astarion was never able to do- fight back, resist, and leave. Drizzt survived the horrors of growing up literally tortured mentally and physically by people who by all other means were meant to help and support him. Astarion was ripped from his life and forced into this horrible servitude and spent his days in terror, just like Drizzt did. Astarion probably sees a lot of himself in Drizzt and wished at least at some point that he could do the same. Drizzt is a survivor, and so is Astarion. Drizzt became what he is because he survived, and I'm certain Astarion hopes he can, too. Drizzt found community despite his circumstances, and so did Astarion. I'm sure they would have plenty to talk about, plenty of healing they could to just chatting together.

Maybe it is just the Vampire Story Enthusiast in me...but I cannot be the only one walking out of the dungeon after Cazador got stabbed thirty to thirty-five times ANXIOUS because we can't just leave him there?? He's not done yet??? It's a VAMPIRE?? Doesn't Vellioth's skull or his urn or something literally fucking talk??? And we're just gonna leave Szarr there with a measly few dozen stab wounds??

Listen I'm just saying. A couple of companions gently lead Astarion out of the dungeon. He said he was ready to leave, we do not need to make him stay. BUT. A couple need to stay behind to absolutely incinerate Cazador. Holy water and flambé the bitch. Put the ashes in the river. There are many other methods to this but if stabbing alone were enough there would not be so many Draculas to be concerned with. Karlach help me dismember this sicko.

Astarion taking to sleeping more often rather than trancing after the events of the game.

When elves trance, they relive memories. In an Astarion origin playthrough, we see how his memories of Cazador tend to invade his trances. And trance memories are exact. Vivid. You can literally choose to have him try to make out what the scars on his back say by having him relive the carvings through that trance. Right?

So, post-game, he tries to stick to trancing. It’s more convenient. It’s what elves do. It’s what he’s always done.

Every night, it’s visions of Cazador.

One night, he’s so exhausted from reliving those same damn memories that he just passes out on a bed the moment he hits it. He sleeps fully. And sure, he has some nightmares. But they’re nowhere near as vivid, as real, as trancing makes his memories feel. They’re fuzzy. When he wakes, he finds he can barely remember the specifics of them.

And that’s so much better. Not perfect- he’d rather not see Cazador’s face ever again, but fuzzy was better than clear.

So Astarion takes to sleeping rather than trancing whenever he needs rest. And he’s an absolute ugly sleeper. He’ll sprawl all over the bed, wake up with his hair every which way, drool, hell, he even snored one night and wouldn’t believe anyone telling him that. He’s too dignified to snore, you cretin.

He wakes up groggy and oftentimes takes at least an hour to get himself up, drifting in and out of consciousness, but… he also doesn’t constantly feel on edge as much as he used to. He can afford to be groggy so long as he’s safe.

And he is safe.

You can ABSOLUTELY see Astarion in how he carries himself, I adore that! And a WYVERN companion? I’m in love. 💕

I love to think that Astarion is so out of his depth with the concept of pets, and definitely is picky about which animals he’d prefer to have in his home. He jokes that he’s very brave for marrying my Durge (who is a ranger/necromancer that he actually was married to BEFORE everything) when she and her raven companion are inseparable (and he hates birds.)

One of their twin sons in my postgame ideas becomes a ranger, and his companion is a bear cub he rescued as a kid, and Astarion just has to cope with this black bear that now lives in his house, too. 😂

And, yes, so much yes to your take on Astarion raising a son/sons! I think teaching his boys that their autonomy and consent is just as important and just as to be respected as their sisters, too. Just because he’s a boy doesn’t mean things should be acceptable for him that wouldn’t be for his sisters. And at the same time, I think he’s very encouraging of whatever his children choose to pursed, regardless of the predominant gender around it.

I’m very brave because not only do I support Dadstarion, I’m also a Boy Dad Astarion Truther.
