i love having american guests in the hotel i work at, like, the best icebreaker to go for with smalltalk is the good old „so where are you from?“ and people of any other nationalities would say the country they came from. But americans will hit you with something like „north carolina“ or even towns. Imagine i am in the us and asked where i‘m from would say „Rheinland-Pfalz but quite up north it‘s almost Nordrhein-Westfalen :)“
