[SC] SSO Roached Mane Edit
Tumblr media
Haha, so, turns out I am dying from IRL even more than I thought I'd be, but that's okay, it'll be over soon and I'll have more free time to finish our next set. I hope.
In the meantime as I struggle over balancing work and fun, Schrodcat threw together a few edits of the SSO Roached Mane in my upcoming first batch of SSO hair conversions and has posted it for download on his patreon (for free, ofc) as a sort of "teaser" to the upcoming set. S has been testing all of the manes as I pump them out so this set of tweaks was born from that!
If you're interested in a sampling of the SSO manes we have upconing, check it out and download here;
Download [SchrodCat's Patreon]
Credits & full TOU are on Schrod's patreon, but just to re-iterate quickly; make sure to credit both of us + SSO (where the mesh originally came from) if you make any derivative CC from this, don't paywall, etc.

That's a great way to honor the memories and experiences you had with the doll! I have the eternal problem of "no work only content" where I want to see how things turn out but don't necessarily have a complete vision on how to get there :,D But hey, good things to mull over. It's not like there's really any hurry with this hobby. Maybe I'll have a stroke of genius one day and it'll all slot into place in one way or an another hah
I think it's interesting how as I age my characters do also. I'm a lot older now then I was when I first made up some of them - Aino was initially supposed to be 17! Now I'm 30 and finding myself wanting some elders for my group. But also, at this point, some of them would need to go before getting any new ones. I simply don't have the space, even if I had the energy. Maybe one day.

I’ve had this IoS K for years and didn’t feel like it was a good fit for Alpin but… seeing as I couldn’t even think of the faceup for the Elfdoll head, this’ll probably stick on for a while.

I knew it from the start but took me a while to really be ok with this hobby being a slow burn. I used to get so anxious about unfinished projects, but now I know that it’s better for my enjoyment to take things slow and do them “right” than just slap something on and call it done.
I also used to be much more online active and take proper photos and everything. Maybe I will again one day. I’m probably working myself up to there some day. But not yet.

This came out so beautifully!
Sewing Victorian Doll Clothes
A long time ago, when I just started doll sewing, I bought a book. It had photographs and minute descriptions of antique doll collections, as well as a number of patterns with detailed sewing instructions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was quite beyond my skill, and the clothes didn't appeal to me (I was in my Sara Kay / Regency phase), so I shelved it away.
But now, I've become an avid follower of costube content. I've learned to appreciate the Victorian silhouette. I bought some beautiful wool fabric recently. And I was looking for a project.
The book's time to shine had come!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I still love hand sewing. Much of my knowledge comes from Bernadette Banner. Like: If you find yourself working with wool, take the time to thread-mark! It really pays off.
But the my main inspiration for this outfit was the_sewlo_artist. I just love her hobbit outfits.
So have a little homage to a creator I admire: Ingwer history bounding in a walking skirt and a cycling sweater.

Resin doesn’t go bad, so there’s no hurry. If you’re worried about yellowing you can always pack them into storage for a while!
I recently had/am still having an “online break” from dolls for a few years and it’s been great. Just having them around and occasionally changing up the poses or clothes is valid. It’s always okay to take a timeout from hobbies if they don’t bring you joy.
I don’t want to sell my dolls. But I lost my interest in the hobby. I feel really bad rn about all thats happening in my life, but I cant say its because of this since some months ago everything was going as smoothly as possible and I already didnt feel like spending my times with the hobby. I worry my dolls may deteriorate if I keep them alone for years, so maybe it is better to sell… but i am afraid i will want it all again

Idk, for me the way I helped budget things was: - getting a faceup locally and from someone with skill but starting out (I don’t even live in the states and was on several occasions able to find a faceup artist in the same country that I am, and on one occasion even in the neighboring town) These were 25e each. The search took time! But it is definitely possible to find less expensive options even if you don’t want to learn to make your own.
- Again, local thrift groups are king. While mine have been mostly gotten outside of them, I often see my local group give stuff like wigs and eyes and clothes and shoes away for much cheaper than in common sales. One time I got a bag of eyes for like 10e. A lot of the time people just want to trade, or shift stuff they no longer use out in a way where you’re paying a nominal fee and postage so the stuff goes to someone that’ll actually use it. It may not be like... top shelf stuff all the time, but many are interested in avoiding having to make a formal sales post if they can.
- personally, in my collection, only one doll has their hands or body blushed, and even that is only to hide some customizing marks a bit better. I like to handle my dolls without having to worry about it, so leave the body unblushed - it’s not like it’ll show under clothes anyway - and the hands due to them being more prone to chipping.
- like you said, stands are totally optional. But basically all of these take time, and being active in the community. It’s perfectly OK to have something “just for now“ even if it isn’t super character accurate! This is a longterm hobby. And I’m not saying it’s cheap! Even the initial cost of a doll is a lot of money! I only got a stand after like... more than 10 years into the hobby :,D And even then it was mostly because I wanted to display one of them standing due to a dress.
This seems like an expensive hobby
New person: I guess this seems like an expensive hobby that’s a little hard to get into?
The usual reply: “Oh no-no-no, Anon, everyone can totally do this hobby on a budget for sure, we welcome everyone and there are dolls for every budget, here’s a bunch of links to companies that offer well-priced dolls!”
New person: Ok, here I go - Base doll + free eyes and company face-up $250.00 - ok, thats not too bad and I can afford that much, let’s do this!
Doll arrives, naked and bald, which they kind of expect, but experiencing that feels different when they actually see it that way, the reality hits and this doll is going to need some stuff right away to even keep it out on the shelf. And well, the face-up is meh, the eyes aren’t really what they had in mind either. He doesn’t look or feel like their OC at all and they are not a very crafty person at all so…(here’s the part that we don’t tell new people who really are on a more strict budget they absolutely have to adhere to)
- a face-up you’d actually want $60-100+, then shipping both ways and a headless body for possibly months
- good quality eyes in in the proper color and size $30+, then shipping, rarely cheaper
- custom wig $50-75, then shipping
- suitable clothes, one set $90, then shipping, assuming something tailored decently
- shoes one pair $35, then shipping, if boots or something custom = more
- a few accessories for the character $80 and counting then shipping x 2-3 items
- mani/pedi/body blush $20-100+,  then shipping both ways, optional but often wanted
- stand $15-50, free shipping, optional but often wanted
So - tell us again how to do this hobby well without over-spending a very tight budget? Without compromising on the entire vision for a doll character OR without needing to learn 4-5 entirely new artistic disciplines quite well - including buying those related tools and supplies - which are also not within the budget. I’m sure we’ve all heard some of the (true) stories of plasma donation and people basically eating ramen for months but they are not really not ideal scenarios to recommend! (And of course recasts are never a relevant topic within this proper hobby universe, and rightly so.)
So the new person then vents a little frustration and expresses some disappointment now because basically the initial $250 is already spent and they are currently either stuck with a doll that they are unhappy with as-is or faced with spending more than they can really afford in order to improve it into something they may actually be happy with.
A common reply: “Well this is NOT a cheap or easy hobby, Anon!”
Yet anyone who dares to utter that last line from the start or makes a list of what they’ve actually spent on a doll is considered an elitist rather than just a realist speaking from their own experience. Doll base price is usually just the entry fee to this crazy hobby ride. Why don’t we just admit that?
